Am I Obligated To Honor Previous “Verbal Agreements” Made From A Business I Inherited?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:29 AM PDT

I'll try to keep this as black and white as possible...

I unexpectedly inherited a Marina in NY 3 years ago after the sudden and out of the blue death of a family member. Over the past 3 years I've pretty much been trying to decipher the whole business and put together everything in a way that's more manageable for me to run.

The biggest issue I've had has been; it seems everyone "had a deal" with my family member for a discounted slip (boat parking space) and at first I was honoring those deals as to keep good relations with all the customers. I found out that a few people have taken advantage of this and stretched the truth and even completely fabricate deals. Taking advantage of my goodwill and naivety.

With the new season about to begin, after being burned a few times, I have decided to put my foot down and say any deals that were made under previous ownership will only be honored with a written agreement. This has made one customer of mine livid and he's been constantly and inappropriately bothering me about how the deal he made has already been agreed upon. Not by me but from my dead family member.

I don't have any written evidence but a long-time employee, who I trust very much, told me recently that the deal the customer made with my family member was only for one year. He's now received the same deal (more than half off on a slip in exchange from some old equipment that I don't even use) for the 4 years (one when my family member was alive, 3 since I took over). My family member took a ton of notes and seemingly wrote everything on his mind down, either on his phone or in notepads/random pieces of paper. I haven't found ANYTHING about this deal.

Trying to take my anger and emotion of being lied to and taken advantage of; I told him for me to continue honoring the deal I need something in writing between the two of them that gives details and dates of the "deal". Is this legal? Do I have to honor deals that I never verbally agreed to? Are there any ramifications that I'm not thinking of by terminating verbal agreements that I had nothing to do with? What about written ones? Can I tell him he's no longer welcome at the marina (contractually I have that right)? Where should I go from here? He's essentially dooped me for 5-6 thousand dollars. I'm just trying to do the right thing, but I don't want to be taken advantage of or get in any legal trouble.

My significant other wants me to be a part of the mortgage but not the deed/title, is it smart to agree to this? (MN, USA)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:32 AM PDT

As the title states my boyfriend wants me to go through the mortgage process with him and be on the mortgage, which I am not against, but his mother has told him I shouldn't be on the deed since we aren't married.

To my understanding this would mean I would be responsible for mortgage payments, but would not have any claim of equity in the house. Is there a way for me to retain some claim to the equity I am also contributing, or is it simply not a smart idea to agree to a mortgage and not be titled on the deed.

To me it doesn't seem smart or fair on my part, but if there is a way to protect myself and the equity I put into the house I'm certainly not opposed to being on the mortgage.

Any helpful insight or recommendations are appreciated.

Bra required to be worn in jail?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:43 PM PDT

Hi, legaladvice. I have a question about the way my sister is being treated after her arrest. She's in CO, at the Grand County jail. First off, she's very sensitive about the subject because of some postpartum depression and general disdain about being in the situation she's in, so I'm trying to help her out. The jail requires female inmates to wear a bra in all common areas outside her cell, which I completely understand. She has been granted permission to pump her milk 5 times a day as needed in the infirmary, and has only had one CO really give her an issue about it. It seems like that one CO is now present more often the last two weeks (schedule change?) and is making remarks toward my sis about writing her up for breaking dress code, and asking why she isn't wearing her jail-supplied bra to and from the infirmary, and so on. The CO has been getting more and more volatile about it, saying that she looks obscene, and making other inflammatory comments, from what I've heard.

The issue is that the jail issue bra doesn't fit my sister's figure. She was issued a 3X and simply can't get it to fit. Is it fair that she has an extremely large chest and is being singled out for it by this asshole CO? I've been denied visitation with her because she wasn't wearing a bra she can't fit into. What can I do to help her, and more importantly, is this something to talk to a lawyer about?

Tldr; sis has experienced some breast growth due to lactation + pregnancy and is experiencing discrimination from corrections officers because she is forced to go braless.

edit: I just spoke with her this afternoon and discovered she's been expressing in the showers 2-3x a day because the 5x daily rotation is inadequate. I'll be speaking with her lawyer tomorrow to get this issue raised ASAP. Thanks to a bunch of you, I'm also speaking to them about allowing a special bra to be ordered for her while she's nursing.

(Wisconsin) Ex-GF is pregnant and I could be the father. She wants to leave the baby for adoption against my wishes. What to do next?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:36 AM PDT

Basically the title says it all.

The reason for our breakup was indeed her cheating on me so there is a chance that I'm not the father (in that case she's free to give up the baby for adoption if she and the actual father wish so, obviously).

How do I ensure that a paternity test is performed after the baby is born to test if I am the father, and if I am, block any attempt to give up the baby for adoption without my consent? At what point do I need a lawyer (to agree custody, etc)? She is 5 months pregnant.

[US, TX] A cop forced his way into my house because he thought my Canadian flag was advertising weed for sale.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:56 PM PDT

This just happened a few hour ago, and I'm still quite shaken up... sorry if I don't include much detail or if nothing makes sense. I'm going to try my best to articulate everything the best I can, and in the order they happened.

At 7 PM I was out on my porch, reading on my iPad, when a single police officer, I believe off duty, pulls into my driveway out of nowhere. He gets out of his car and begins very angrily pointing at my large Canadian flag hanging off my front porch. He immediately begins making accusations that it's the universal symbol for marijuana, and demands I give up my "stash".

Seconds later he immediately escalates the situation by pulling me up by my shirt and placing me "under arrest" — and I say that with quotes because he did not use his radio at all, which I presume is not normal.

After immobilizing me he tells me he is going to find the marijuana I'm growing, and enters my house. At this point I'm in tears and shaking because I have Aspergers, and don't do well with any sort of confrontation. He was in my house for a very long time — over 30 minutes. When he finally gives up and walks out, he aggressively pulls at my hands bringing me back up to my feet which left marks that are still there due to the handcuffs being so tight. He literally said "Give me back my fucking handcuffs" before getting them off, marching over to his car, slamming his door, and literally reversing his car so fast that it screeches back into the street.

I immediately called 911 after he left, and they responded with two cops showing up within minutes of the guy leaving. They couldn't figure out who the hell it was, or if it was even a real police officer. I'm just trembling thinking I'm going to be some target again in the future by a fake cop, or some cop who has gone corrupt off duty. There were no identifying marks on the car that I can remember.

I have a police report. What do I do?

Mom smashed my Laptop. What can I do?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:45 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm using a throwaway because I don't want the people at school finding out and making fun of me. I'm almost 16 if that helps anything?

On the weekend I bought myself a laptop with money (I already use dad's old one but I saved up for years from birthdays and delivering junk mail). I bought it and used cash and I have the receipt.

The other day mom and I got into a fight (lots or yelling) about me wanting to live with my dad, step-mom and half-sister. mom said things like she spent too much money in court to have me live with her so she's not going to let me leave. We yelled alot about it and mom got really angry. She took my laptop and then started smashing it up and then stepped on it, grabbed it and bent it badly.

Yesterday I tried talking to mom about it but she said that she's allowed to do what she wants to with my property as she has "duty of care" or something like that.

I don't know what to do. Is there some way I can force mom to replace my laptop or pay me the money back?

Dog walker lying about walking our dog

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:00 AM PDT

My wife and I work full time and use a dog walking service. We have a contract with terms of service, we schedule the walks weekly, and we get emails when the walk has been completed. The same person walks (or doesn't, as it turns out) our dog every day. Over the past few months my wife and I became suspicious that she wasn't being walked for the full time we pay for, and on some days maybe not at all. I started taking pictures of the leash before leaving, and pictures when I got home. It's a rope leash that hangs from a hook. Sure enough, the leash looks identical. I couldn't take it off and hang it up identically if I tried. So I purchased a security camera and started recording. This walker literally is not walking our dog, and saying she is. And being paid for it. I'm furious. To say we love our dog is an understatement. Outside of the financial (theft?), it's very unhealthy for this breed of dog to be in a kennel for the amount of time she apparently has been each day. I have no idea how long this has been going on for but I suspect it's been quite a while.

I am not hellbent on legal action, as I don't believe the owner of the company (it's a small local service) is aware of the situation. But I want to talk to the owner and present the facts. If the discussion turns to legal proceedings, do I have options and if so, what would they be? Happy to provide more info if needed. Thanks to all

    Tenant destroyed property and trees/soil

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:56 AM PDT

We rented out our family hobby farm to what seemed like good tenants about 8 months ago, but nearly had to evict them after they failed to pay rent or electric the last 2 months. Upon leaving, they stole everything they could (about $3k worth of items left behind in a room they were not to use, as storage (part of agreement), damaged and vandalized the property (beyond $10,000) and hurled racist slurs and epithets towards me over text message, which I interpret as motive for potential hate crime of property/land destruction towards my family and I. I will not be able to certify it as organic any longer, after years of caring for the soil. The most damaging is the environmental damage intentionally caused, because it will take significant time and money to remediate. Some of the things they did in the last 2 months of being there:

-Allowed chickens and dogs in the home, peeled back flooring, ashes and dirt caked everywhere. Entered locked storage, threw all boxes of things room in a pile, and let dogs sleep and pee on them.

-Burned appliances and anything with metal they could find, in the garden area, leaving plastics and corrosive metal leaching into the soil of the garden (this is in Oregon so it rains a lot)

-Cut down half of a GIANT oak tree, which is 150+ years old. Literally a giant tree that started as one and split into two, they cut one half of it.

-Had an illegal cannabis grow far exceeding beyond a compliant garden for 1 patient (state law allows 4, I think medical allows 6 per card holder), they had probably 100.

-Left behind hundreds of butane cans, many of which they also attempted to burn in piles along with plastics and other toxics/synthetics.

-Dumped toxic butane, a byproduct of the process in making their cannabis concentrates, I believe into soil- contaminating area soil for food crops. Fruit shrubs and ornamentals no longer grow in suspected areas.

-Cut down older established cherry blossom tree and very large well producing row of natural blackberries- all gone.

-Cultivated magic mushrooms in the home (said on recording this is likely why the home smelled).

I am wondering what my options are and if in addition to a civil lawsuit, perhaps a suit to address the damage to the land and soils as well as potentially emotional distress for the racial slurs and comments they made via text "sold all your stuff and bought 40 acres" and "n" word. This is especially distressing as my great uncle and grandma worked cotton fields in Miss and I'm definitely the minority in this small Oregon town/county.

    They also:

-Failed to seek permission for holes in walls to install cameras.

Failed to notify of broken appliances (or broke them intentionally upon leaving)

Destroyed vehicle parked on site, slashed the tires and stole battery

Somehow rendered hot water heater useless

My friend commissioned an artist $1600 for a short animated gif - he never completed his work after 5+ months and lives in another country outside the US.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:49 AM PDT

Yes, my friend has acknowledged that she made a silly, naive mistake paying the whole cost upfront, but he worked at an animation studio in the US — I called the studio today, gave his full name, and am waiting to hear back if they have any information — but I believe he's just an independent contractor and not a full employee. I believe he lives in Chile or Portugal.

I think we have sufficient evidence and proof that this animator committed fraud (not quite sure what the correct legal term is?), and intentionally misled my friend for months so that she couldn't dispute payment on PayPal after a certain period of time. Also, because he lives in a country outside the US, what is the best route my friend can take to get this resolved or reimbursed?

She simply wants to let it go, and even blames herself for this situation, but i feel like there is something that can be done since we know his name, a place where he works or used to work at, and a few personal social media accounts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Deceased credit card

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:04 AM PDT

Hello , hope I'm posting in the right place ... My sister unfortunately passed away 12 months ago from cancer and being single and only in her early 30s - had me (her only sibling) down on her will as executor and beneficiary ... My question is , we notified the bank within a month of her passing . They continued to charge her interest and late fees for a further 4 months . Unbeknown to me ... until now when the solicitor has provided me with the statements and asked if I'm okay with paying the owed amount out of the estate. My sister owes about 5k but since the account was meant to be closed there's now a further few hundred dollars on there from fees and charges that came out each month AFTER she died. I know it's morally wrong, but are banks really allowed to do this ? She also had a life benefit policy attached to the credit card which they have knocked back due to her medical condition being 'pre existing'. She hadn't been deemed terminally ill 4 years ago and hence why she agreed to taking out this $50 a month policy when she got the credit card. I know it's abit 'he said she said' but is there anyway to fight back at the bank about this ? At the end of the day I'm most pissed about the charges AFTER she died, i know it's only a small amount of money but it just seems wrong that this is legal in Australia ! I'm only young myself and obviously not experienced in this field and any info or similar stories would be a big help... please be kind !!

College professor refusing my accommodations for a test.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:04 PM PDT

I'm looking for input on my school vs disability situation. Location: Las Vegas, NV.

I'm registered with my college's disability center, and I was planning to utilize their accommodations for three proctored exams this semester for a math course. The first of which was completed successfully. (I take my tests alone in a room, because of debilitating anxiety in testing rooms and a major panic disorder that I see a psychiatrist for and have been hospitalized for multiple times.) I digress.

I made an appointment to take my test during the required test window the professor gives. I showed up as expected, prepared. The computer at the Disability center was unfortunately on lockdown with some sort of administrator password no one had access to. An hour of phone calls from the office got no answers. They eventually sent me home and reassured me that they would discuss this with my teacher to extend the test window due to the situation being out of my control.

It's been a week and a half of Hell for me. The director of the Disability center cannot get my teacher to allow me to take this test. She is saying I could have taken it without my accommodations to have met her deadline and she's trying to get me to appeal the class for my tuition back a month from the class' completion!

What are my rights here? Any ideas on who to talk to? How can she go against the law?

CA: Is this workplace harassment/can I be fired over this?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 09:11 AM PDT

I will try to be as brief as possible. Checking my post history will help with details. Long story short, I collected everything needed for a reasonable accommodation of wearing headphones in my office, that I share with a co-worker, due to the fact that I have Misophonia.

The co-worker I share a space with has been consistently creepy and/or hostile to me throughout the time I have worked with him (approximately one year). I have been at this company for 3 years.

I got approval from my boss and our appointed HR person that the headphones were OK. This co-worker promptly went to the boss and said he was uncomfortable with my wearing them. I had to meet with boss and HR person to discuss this. Boss said have a one-on-one conversation with my co-worker to "clear the air".

Here is where I am wondering what just happened: I communicated with the employee this morning, and here is how it went... He expressed that he really cares for me, wants me to care for him, too. Understands that I have a disability (was this disclosed??), and doesn't care. He then stated that if I am to wear the headphones and if he cannot talk to me, he is going to resign. And then he ran off crying.

What am I supposed to do?

[Chicago, IL] After repeated maintenance calls regarding my kitchen sink, it overflowed and ruined my computer. I am withholding rent. Seeking advice.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:36 AM PDT

I have had a problem with my kitchen sink spontaneously filling with dirty water from the drain. In other words, I am not using the sink at all and suddenly dirty water comes up from the drain, filling the sink and sometimes overflowing it.

I have reported to maintenance about 5 times within 5 months. They have come up to vacuum up some water but mentioned it's an old building and not much they could do.

Recently very gross water with dirt and debris came up and flooded my kitchen counter, kitchen floor and nearby carpet. I had a PC sitting on my counter, as I was using the counter as a stand-up desk. It got soaked and is ruined (it's a small PC and the motherboard is very close to the surface it sits on).

Apartment management says, "That's what renter's insurance is for," but submitting it to insurance is a $500 deductible, which is almost the price of the PC.

I told them that it is their pattern of negligence (i.e., not having a plumber actually fix the problem) that allowed this to happen. I am withholding rent until we come to an agreement. They have given me a 5-day notice and said they will have their lawyer proceed with eviction. It is my last month anyway (they have no security deposit), but I don't want a judgement against me.

What should I do? Should I submit the rent minus 500 and say that cashing the check constitutes payment in full? Or is this a lost cause?

    Lawyer didn't show...

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:59 AM PDT

I posted a while back about my idiot husband who got a reckless driving charge and plead 'not guilty' at his first hearing. His second hearing was set for yesterday. We lawyered up and our lawyer said that my husband would not have to attend the hearing (He's currently going to school) Well the lawyer forgot to write the court case down on his calendar and no one showed up on behalf of my husband.

A warrant was issued for his arrest and the police came last night to our home and arrested him. I called the lawyer and he eventually picked up the phone. He apologized profusely and said he would be at the court house first thing in the morning to appear before the judge for my husband.

At their 8:30am hearing, he was able to talk my husband out of jail time as well as his bond. I'm going to go pick up my husband around noon today from the county jail.

Is there anything we can do against our current lawyer? False representation? Not sure what to do but I'm not one to let things slide by. All humans make mistakes.. This mistake just lead to my husband being put in jail for the night and also this being put on his record...

Construction next door damaged our cherry tree. Boise, Idaho

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:31 AM PDT

I posted this a few day ago, and it didn't seem to get seen, so I'm just trying again so see if anyone has any input. Thanks in advance!

We are renting a house in Boise next door to a large lot that is being developed with a few houses. Our driveway is close to the property line next to the lot being developed. We have a big, mature, cherry tree next to the driveway even closer to the property line. Apparently the developer tried to force our landlady to cut down the cherry tree about a year ago (as well as tear down the garage but that's another story) but she didn't and instead had the property lines verified and then had her arborist cut the branches that were hanging over the property line and trim the tree in a way that would encourage the tree to just grow on our side of the property.

Last summer they did the leveling of the lot in preparation for building and we noticed that about 5-6 feet over from our property line into their property, they had deeply hacked a very large root from the cherry tree. My landlord took pictures and she has those.

This spring the damage is showing up. While last year she had a major harvest of cherries (shortly before we moved in), this year about 40%-60% of the branches on the tree are dead with no big green buds like the rest of the branches.

Furthermore, they haven't even started on the house that will be close to our property line. All the houses will be packed into the lot, with no yards, rather just "common space" between them, and there won't be much space between our property line and the house. The house going up close to our property will have a basement like the others, so I'm assuming that the tree will end up being killed in the end as they will likely destroy the roots.

I'm guessing there's nothing that can be done as we obviously can't stop the development of the house. But just to make sure: is there anything at all that can be done? Even just for the damage done so far? I'm just really sad to be losing the tree.

I don't know how old the tree is. Our landlady bought the house about 15 years ago and it was a mature and abundantly producing tree then up until this spring. She's one of the best landlords we have ever had, so I just wanted to see if I could help her out and get some information. Thanks!

*I should add that the developer has been a nightmare and a bully to the neighborhood, so just having a conversation with him about it will not lead to any good results.

[MI] I got someone kicked out of college and now he and his mom are harassing me and threatening to sue me. What can I do?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 11:32 AM PDT

So about a month ago I got into a fight with someone we'll call longboard douche (LD for short). I was walking on my way to class on a high foot traffic sidewalk when he knocked me over. The sidewalk was packed at the time and he was apparently yelling at people to move when he rode through. I had earbuds in and didn't hear him and he slammed into me knocking us both over.

I got extremely mad at him and ended up arguing with him. The university I go to has a rule saying that students are not supposed to ride things like longboards on campus so I ended up taking his board and calling campus police. He began to threaten to get physical with me when I refused to give it back and other students had to get involved and hold him back.

When the campus police showed up they took both of our statements and had me hand over the longboard to them. He got aggressive with them in the end and was given multiple citations from them. I was not injured and nothing of mine was damaged so at first I had no plans to do anything but the police asked me if I wanted to submit a complaint against him to the university which I happily agreed to.

I thought that was the end of it but a few weeks ago LD's mom added me on facebook and began to chew me out. Apparently LD got kicked out for this. He was already on academic probation and my (i will admit, quite spiteful and scathing) complaint was the tipping point and the university kicked him out and banned him from university property. She began to harass me over facebook, twitter, and every social media she could find, Eventually LD joined in too and sent me multiple texts harassing me and is saying I should "watch myself incase he gets mad enough". He also got my home phone number and called my dad to tell me he's been sleeping with me and that i'm a whore.

Along with this harassment, the both of them have been threatening to sue me for his spent tuition over the two years he went to university plus "emotion damage" and libel for my complaint. I didn't think they were serious but today I revived a letter from a lawyer saying that i'm being sued! The letter says that the family of LD are suing me for over half a million dollars and I should be prepared.

What can I do? I'm actually pretty scared right now and don't know what to do. My dad is furious right now. He says he's going to go to the police with this letter and the texts but if i'm being sued is that a bad option? Like, if we get the police involved will this make me look bad in court. Should I get a lawyer? Thanks.

Car Insurance - Progressive - trying to deny claim from hail damage saying their system shows different times of storm passing through. (FL)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 10:32 AM PDT

So, my parents live in an area where hail occurred heavily one morning about 2 weeks ago. During the storm my mom went to log into her progressive to see if hail damage was covered in their policy. Upon doing so she found their covered had been canceled for a $37.00 late payment. They had no knowledge of this and immediately called to pay it and ask why they never got a call or letter. At 9:24am they received an email stating thank you for your payment and there was no lapse in your coverage. All of this as an attachment on the Progressive letter head. At 9:54am another huge burst of hail and rain came through. My mom took a video to send to my dad who had left earlier in the morning for work. Now the claims specialists is asking for so much information. Personal call logs for that whole day, screen shots of every message sent, asking to talk to my younger sister who is in high school and still a minor to take her testimony alone, and asking how do we know the damage didn't happen in the FIRST storm and not in the second. We (Progressive) show that the storm rolled into your area at 7:30am not later in the day...just really giving them a hard time about trying to claim any damage. My sisters car and dad's truck are very damaged, and while I understand they missed a payment by 3 days of $37.00 they got a letter stating no lapse in coverage so why would time of storm matter?

Do they have a leg to stand on? They really are good people and are feeling bad like they have done something wrong for asking for their insurance company to help with this. So, I'm just trying to assure them that they just need to continue to tell the truth and push back on the company as it's their job to try and deny claims, not approve them.

TL;DR : missed payment by 3 days of $37.00, got letter staying no lapse in coverage, now company is saying hail damage happened the morning of reinstatement but BEFORE reinstatement. But the letters say no lapse in coverage - so why's it matter?

Dallas, Texas. Job Retention offer changed after I turned down the other offer

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 06:41 AM PDT

I'm not sure if I should spend the money on a consultation so I am asking here first. I work for the University of Texas system in Dallas doing medical research. On March 28th, I was offered a new position in Baltimore with a 18% pay increase from my current salary, but they wanted an answer within 48 hours. I told this to my direct supervisor and he asked me to give him until Monday the 1st to make a counter offer. On Monday he emailed me and CC'ed our division chair saying that him and the DC agreed to match the salary offer I was given in order to retain me, and they will work with the department to get the salary changed over the next week. Come today, after turning down the other offer my department administrator had a sit down meeting with me and my DC and told me they were not willing to match the offer and that my Supervisor and DC were not allowed to extend me an offer. Am I shit out of luck or can I do anything about it?

Insurance Company pulling me from a medication they still cover to try their preferred med

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 08:30 AM PDT

    State: Pennsylvania

    Hey all!

My neurologist just called me to tell me that my insurance company has denied me from using a drug I have taken for 6 months because they want me to now try their preferred drug. I'm not sure if I can name the drugs here so I won't, but I take these once a month for migraine prevention. I have chronic migraines and suffer from 17+ a month, on this current drug I am down to 2 a month. Now my insurance wants me to stop this one (which I don't know if there are any side effects from stopping after a prolonged period) and go to their preferred one. If that one doesn't work for me then I have to try they're second preferred one, and if that one doesn't work I can go back to what I am currently doing that is working. My problem is I don't know if I can go back to living over half of my month in extreme pain and lose the quality of life I currently have.

Are they legally allowed to pull me off of a current drug I'm taking, that they still cover, just to make me go along with their new rules? Also, I can not find anything online with my policy stating that I have to try this, then that, then finally the one I'm taking. It still just lists the three name brands and no "therapy" as they call it to try before the last one.

My doctor has appealed to them three times and has been denied each time. Everytime I call the insurance they tell me it's because my doctor "hasn't filled out the paperwork right" and that's it.

Is this allowed to happen? Is there anything I can do? I wouldn't mind paying out of pocket but out of pocket costs can be close to $500-$1000 just for a month supply.

Can I sue back for a false rape accusation?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 09:17 AM PDT

I was falsely accused of rape and sexual harassment by a coworker who I was in a relationship with after we broke up she accused me I lost my job working for BLM and had to fight the charges for months before it finally was cleared up BLM did hire me back after the truth came out but no one treats me the same at work anymore is there any recourse I can take? I am in Oregon btw. EDIT I have alibis from coworkers and friends about my whereabouts on the dates of the supposed sexual assault which is why the charges were dropped.

[Missouri] Landlord refuses to secure exterior door to common parking lot, homeless people living in basement of low-rise residential building.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 08:43 AM PDT

I live in a 24-unit low-rise apartment building, and for the past 18 months, fellow tenants and I have repeatedly complained about an exterior door that is never secured, despite repeated claims by the landlord that he has paid someone to fix it.

The door leads to a parking lot shared by 10+ neighboring buildings, and accessible to the public through gaps in perimeter fencing.

We have seen evidence of people squatting in the building before, but this morning, my neighbor stumbled across a homeless person living in our boiler room.

Missouri statute allows tenants to deduct up to half a month's rent to fix code violations if 14 days have passed since reasonable notice has been given but I cannot figure out if the exterior door issue is a code violation (we're in the City of St. Louis, MO).

I'm also unsure if the statute allows multiple tenants to pool resources to deduct rent for a code violation that would cost more than half of one unit's monthly rent (about $400).

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Husband had an affair. After a year of trying to reconcile he is rushing a divorce.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 05:00 AM PDT

In March of last year while we were living in Massachusetts, I discovered my husband was having an affair. He ended things and we began seeing a therapist. Things we strained but slowly improving between us.

We ended up moving to Idaho where I learned there had been other attempts to connect with people (craigslist, dating sites, etc). He seemed genuinely remorseful so we agreed to see a therapist once again. After a few months things seem to be going well.

Suddenly he sits me down on a Satuday and says he is done. I'm shocked and go to my best friends house to process. The following Monday he is already filing paperwork. He told me he would just like to be done with everything and keeps asking me to sign stuff. I did move my things out of our apartment because I could not be there without crying, but i only took what was mine.

I'm stupid, I mean I gave him multiple chances so clearly, but not stupid enough to just sign things. I'm meeting with a lawyer later this week but I have no idea where to start and what to ask her. Should I just make sure the paperwork is ok and I'm not getting screwed over, or should I fight back?

I'm so hurt and lost I'm struggling to think and I could really use some direction.
