Accidentally drove my car through water and it stalled. What do I do now? Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:53 AM PDT It was dark out and we have been dealing with some flash flooding where I am located. I drove into what I thought was a small bit of water over the road and before I knew it, it was inside my car. I had to escape through the sunroof, which was no easy task being 34 weeks pregnant, and wait for a boat to rescue me. It was extremely traumatic and now my car is stuck there until the water recedes. I have full coverage insurance. My question is basically what do I do? I've never dealt with filing a claim and now I'm worried that they won't cover it because it was my fault. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Production Manager for an auxiliary roofing company here..... Posted: 25 Apr 2019 02:01 AM PDT I'm the right hand of an auxiliary roofing company; one of our client companies gave us copies of an insurance scope for a customer's claim. QBE Americas, INC. is the main insurance company from what I can tell, but there's a separate company included in the scope. Both companies share the same office address in Wisconsin. The scope is full of shady material; weirdly worded sentences, missing entries in the claim, typos throughout the entire folder(typed out and printed by the insurance company itself) and a lot more. If anyone has info on this(these) company(s) let me know so we don't scammed. [link] [comments] |
Relationship between MGA, Reinsurer, and captive fronting carrier? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:20 PM PDT Hi All, I'm trying to better understand the relationship between an MGA, its reinsurance partner, and the reinsurer's captive fronting company (and how fees are split). Take, for example (hypothetical), MunichRe and Great Lakes, it's wholly-owned fronting Company. Say that today, I'm an MGA who has developed a new product. The policies that I write are 100% reinsured by MunichRe, who effectively gets its capacity from Great Lakes (it's fronting company). Let's say that for each policy I sell, I get $100 in earned premium. Of this, I retrocede 65% to MunichRe (which is effectively split 55% for MunichRe and 10% for Great Lakes). Then I take my 35% and retrocede some of it to my distribution partners, pay for admin /claims costs, etc, and ideally am left with some form of profit. My first question is does the above relationship make sense? Why would MunichRe own a fronting Company, rather than just be a 'full-stack' carrier that clips the full 65%? My second question has to do with what I, as an MGA, could do to capture more margin from the reinsurer in the future (as I expand my business). Below is my understanding of a few ways - could you guys let me know if they make sense / what I might be missing? One option is to get my own reinsurance license, and go more direct (say from Lloyd's, where I wouldn't have to pay the fronting fee). How would that work? Could I effectively reinsure 100% of my risk out (so I'd be paying ~55% instead of 65%)? Another option would be for me to try to get my carrier license, and hold my most profitable lines on my balance sheet directly while reinsuring my less profitable products - in this situation, ideally I wouldn't have to pay any form of administration cost to my partner, but rather just a reinsurance management cost. Many thanks in advance to all! [link] [comments] |
Update: In negotiations with my auto insurance adjuster. Any thoughts? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 10:24 PM PDT So, I backed into a co-workers car. Their car is damaged. I gave them my insurance info and they game me theirs. They've already filed a claim with their insurance company. My car is damaged, but honestly, I can live with it. It wouldn't be worth paying any deductible on. I can fix it myself and be happy. My main goal is to keep my premiums from rising. I was the moving vehicle, so I'll probably be found at fault. But here's the thing I can't get over. They were parked in an area that is supposed to be left empty so that I can back out. They know damn well they aren't supposed to park there, but they did so out of laziness and disregard. It's not an illegally parked car, but it does go against our company policy (and if you can't tell, I'm pretty pissed at them). Will either insurance company go any easier on raising my premiums if I tell my side of the story? Or will they just raise them more if I share my two cents? Is there any advantage to not reporting? Is there any advantage to filing a claim? I'm just not sure what to do. I feel wronged, but I know the insurance companies probably won't see it that way. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:23 PM PDT Now he wants to, um, smash me. I rear ended someone stopped at a traffic light. We pulled over to the median and he immediately hopped out his car with a shit-eating grin and told me that if I sucked his dick, he would just drive away like nothing happened. I was this close to calling the cops on his creeper ass. Is this even legal (what he did?) I felt extremely uncomfortable giving him my actual contact phone number so I gave him a fake one. Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:19 PM PDT I'm still covered under my fathers insurance. My SO works full time but his job doesn't offer insurance so he's applied for Medicaid. So neither one of us have an insurance plan we can add our child to. I'm having a REALLY tough time figuring out how to purchase a child only insurance plan, and when would I do this- after she's born? I might apply for Medicaid or CHIP but frankly, I'm worried about the kind of care my baby would receive. I can't even find a pediatrician that will accept Medicaid! My SO's grandmother has been really nice and offered to help with the insurance costs but I can't even figure it out and I'm so upset at the whole system. TLDR- our baby cannot be added to my insurance plan, how do I purchase a child only plan, is there a reliable website I use? When can I do it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:16 PM PDT I got rear-ended the other week (at 1 MPH), which chipped a bit of paint (penny size) and slightly misaligned one edge of my bumper. The case was cut-and-dry; I had dashcam footage of the driver behind me hitting me and then backing up. Case settled in my favor; the other party accepted full liability. Anyway, I have Geico and the person who caused the accident has Geico too. How do I maximize the chances of Geico simply cutting me a check for the damages? I don't necessarily need to fix a penny-sized bit of paint damage or a slightly bent bumper bracket on a 8-year-old car. My self-worth and self-esteem are not harmed by driving around in a slightly less than perfect car. Do I just straight up ask for it, and they'll give it to me? I read a bit about how insurance companies don't like just handing out money for people to pocket and how it can have repercussions down the line, like denied claims. Bonus: are Geico-authorized repair shops any good, or should I just look for my own shop? [link] [comments] |
Adjusters and Agents: What is the best way to document your belongings for insurance purposes? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:13 AM PDT I have homeowners insurance, and I have always been worried that, in the event of a total loss, I would not get reimbursed enough to replace all of my belongings. Obviously, I have many things that can never be replaced, photos and mementos, but I also have a large collection of power tools, hand tools and other valuable items I have collected over the years. What is the best way to document these items for insurance purposes? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:04 PM PDT I ran over a couple larger raccoons doing about 55 yesterday, caused quite a bit of damage to the front end. I have a history of some back pain and running these over jarred me quite a bit, can I pursue getting looked at by a Dr or chiropractor, perhaps getting x-rays or an MRI. I know the damage to the car is covered under comp, how is the medical claim a classified? I am extremely sore today and concerned I may have reinjured my back.. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:14 PM PDT In order for me to see a doctor in California (A liver specialist) I have been told by the Dr's office that I must change groups in my insurance to see him and that it would be no cost and that I could return back to my previous group once done or go to my primary doctor and find a new Dr. I'm stuck at what to do because I really want this Dr yet I never changed my insurance group before so I don't know what to do. Can anyone help me decide or give me their own personal experience. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 08:51 PM PDT So my question is this. I have a 2013 car that I am almost about to finish paying off. I barely drive this thing. Maybe once a week when I need to do a big grocery shop or visit some family. In the last year I have put less than 1000km on it and the year before that put under 1500km(only because I drove for a summer getaway) and I can't foresee this changing in the next couple of years. I pay $135 a month for full coverage including liability. Is there any way I can get my annual premium lower? I have no accidents, no tickets. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I just don't see why I should be paying the same as someone who is driving twice a day in chaotic traffic when I drive once a week out of choice just to stretch out her legs. Thanks in advance for your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:44 PM PDT My husband turns 26 in September and I turn 26 in October. Currently we are each on our respective parents' health plans but of course will get kicked off. Can we enroll together in a family plan during his special enrollment period (60 days before his birthday), or do we have to wait another month until my SEP? When would coverage actually start? For life reasons, the earlier we can get it the better. We'll be enrolling through Covered CA if that changes anything. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 08:12 PM PDT Hello everyone, I want to get renters insurance to protect my items in my parents home and for liability purposes (dog in the house.) I just have a couple questions: I am under the impression that I can get renters insurance even if I am not technically renting but I live in my parents house. The plan will also cover my family members if I am not mistaken? With that being said, I also want to have liability insurance for my German Shepherd. I know most insurance companies exclude German Shepherds, but the one I am looking does not exclude them. The main question I have is how does this work? Does this mean if my dog bites someone outside of the home it wont cover me (I am assuming that this is only for accidents within the home?) While I am not worried about my dog, I like to protect everything I own. I found out today that my parents house insurance does not cover German Shepherds so I am not looking at renters insurance. If anyone can clarify this I would appreciate it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Renter's Insurance questions, somewhat specific to State Farm Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:08 PM PDT I feel like I can't get a solid answer out of the person at my agent's office. I actually really like SF's auto insurance and claim's department, but I have hated the agents. I feel like they try to sign me up for way more than I need, so I'm forced to say no after they waste 30+ minutes of my time not telling me why they are shooting so high for coverage for somebody who has next to nothing. Here's my deal: renter's insurance is likely going to bring down my auto insurance premium so I will get a discount overall. However, what is the bare MINIMUM coverage amount I can have? There's no way I have $35,000 worth of belongings even at full replacement cost for everything. I have a list of every belonging I have. I'll go over it tomorrow and do cost of things, but it's WAY less than $35k. This guy wanted to sign me up for way more coverage than that, saying it was the same cost. This is laughable and makes me not think of this agent's office seriously. Plus I wasn't actually ASKED anything about my life situation, just a bunch of assumptions made over and over. I said that I rent a ROOM. IN SOMEBODY ELSE'S HOUSE. Not an apartment. I don't have any pets. He kept going on and on about an apartment and pets, and situations where I would have somebody over (to discuss liability). I've NEVER rented a room where I was even allowed to have guests. I don't have pets. I don't have a dog that even exists to bite people, even though he kept talking about that. What do I actually need then? All I care about is getting the bare minimum at this point JUST to bring my overall cost of everything down. But I don't want to be paying even a cent MORE than I need for renter's, I don't care how cheap it is. I'm tired of companies nickel and diming me and then justifying it by telling me it's "not that much." When they all do it, it adds up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:03 PM PDT So I just got in my first accident. We were leaving the post office, and after I had backed out, I was righting the steering wheel to drive forward, when this Jeep started backing out right into me. I honked multiple times but accident still happened. The back passenger door as well as the frame are pretty messed up. The driver was apologetic and admitted fault. We exchanged info, took pictures. He was in a jeep and the back of his car looked fine. It was really the trailer hitch thing that I think caused the most damage, he was probably going like 10 miles an hour or so backing up.So off of my parent's recommendation, I actually contacted the 3rd partie's insurance first. They took my statement, and also got the contact info of the witness (which I now know was a mistake on my part), and now i'm waiting to hear back. I'm wondering if I should just go through my own insurance, as the liabitiliy is completely on the 3rd party. The car is driveable still, although I am really unsure what damage has happened underneath. I want to get it repaired ASAP. Also, in terms of repairs, is there any benefit from going through ones recommended by the insurance companies compared to a separate one? shots of damage link: [link] [comments] |
DUI - Car Impounded Until At least June. When Should We Contact Car Insurance? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:28 PM PDT Location: NYC Hello Reddit, My father recently got into a DUI accident and had his car impounded by police. There is a $750 settlement fee to pick up the car but we are unsure of what kind of damages are on the car (the police officer told me it was non-drivable). He is financing and currently has paid off 3/4 of it (around 5k left). One of the conditions of the settlement was also to finish a rehab program before he is allowed to even pick up the car. The earliest he can pick up the car is early June. My question is should we contact insurance before or after we pick up the car (assuming we pick up the car)? We are not financially well off and we know his rates will skyrocket the moment he reports. We are juggling the idea of just forfeiting the car and paying off the remaining balance to be done with the entire situation or if we should try to see if we can sell off the car after picking it up and having insurance fix it. Any advice would be extremely helpful - and for what it's worth, he has not drank since the accident. Don't drink and drive. :/ Edit: formatting [link] [comments] |
Can Co-owner of car insurance be listed as policy holder on insurance? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:47 PM PDT Can Co-owner of car insurance be listed as policy holder on insurance? Advice on choosing a health insurance plan Posted: 24 Apr 2019 12:59 PM PDT Hello, I'm 24 years old, living in North Carolina, and needing to find a health insurance plan for myself (ideally within the next week as I will be leaving my parent's plan). I am healthy and seldom ever need to go to the doctor. I am currently in between jobs. I recently resigned from a full-time position and am currently working part time at $13/hour at 18 hrs/week while trying to secure another part-time job or potentially just a new full-time job. It's looking more likely that I'll get another part-time job so I will not be getting the benefit of health insurance from my employer I believe. What would be my best option in this case? Would I qualify for Medicaid and if so, what would happen with that once my income goes up from getting another job? A friend of mine had mentioned short-term insurance, which seems very affordable but after looking into it, it seems pretty risky. Just looking for advice on what to do right now. As far as applying for health insurance it's a little tricky for me right now as I don't have too accurate of a number for what my income will be going forward. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:44 PM PDT This is in NC Wondering if anything can be done. Family member was pulled out of a parking spot and about to pull away when a lady hit her, ripping off the bumper and damaging taillights etc. A passenger was injured and took an ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries, which now my family members insurance will be paying. They said they're going off the police report (which was falsified in my opinion) even though there were 2 witnesses. There's also apparently video evidence that is in the process of being acquired. If that is submitted to insurance will they change their mind on this? We're trying to avoid massive rate hikes etc. The family member was 100% not at fault. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Employer forgot to cancel health insurance after I switched and I didn't know, claims all in limbo Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:06 PM PDT My employer's health coverage has gotten steadily worse so I decided to decline and try my spouse's (lucky me) for 2019. Unfortunately, someone messed up and I still had coverage unknowingly through March. The old insurance won't cancel back to December 31 because they were sent one claim, which they paid. My company did tell me I don't have to pay for the coverage (..um, yeah, I better not). However, now about 9 claims (at least $2500 in billed costs, a couple hundred out of my pocket) are all in limbo. Everyone (my company's HR) is telling me "It'll be fine! Just call all the providers and have them refile it all all through Old Insurance and it'll all sort out!" but in two days it has taken me 6 hours via phone/email/web just to figure out this much. Does anyone have recommended steps or things to say about how much time (and money) their mistake is going to cost me? I'm planning to tell my HR that I'm using working hours for this, as that's one of the only times I can call and the mistake was not on my end but with their provider. I also am concerned this will cost me more out of pocket than if I just had my new insurance, but it's their fault. Aside from cost, a big reason I left the old insurance was how troublesome it was to work through claims with them. I love the new insurance (they have even called me back to update me on a claims status... I almost cried) but now I can't use them as my primary. TLDR I didn't know my company forgot to cancel my insurance until March, had a lot of appointments and prescriptions I billed to new insurance. Claims are now supposed to be sent to terrible old insurance as primary. Now I'm told I have to work it out myself, with 6+ hours already down the drain and my money in limbo. What should I do?
