Posted: 24 Apr 2019 10:29 AM PDT Most companies don't turn a profit in their first year of biz AFAIK, so I didn't anticipate being paid the first year. But now that the co has been around, I'm starting to wonder about the operations/financials. What questions do I ask the owner? [link] [comments] |
1099 Sales Rep used company generated lead for personal gain - How do I address? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 11:47 PM PDT Good Evening, Friends - I have been scouring the internet for hours trying to find a place to start on how I approach a recent event in my company. I'll do my best to provide enough detail - I'm hoping to find a place to start before I discuss with a lawyer or if that is even worth it. Background: I started a gutter company in 2017. Here we are, 2 years in with 3 sales reps & 10 installers. I've been fiercely protective of our brand since day 1 & have our team drinking the Kool Aid about doing jobs the right way. We may be fortunate enough to break the $1MM revenue mark this year & I attribute that to my knowledgeable crew & the reputation they built doing top notch work. Last year I hired our first sales rep. I worked with my lawyer to draft a good "direct seller agreement" to make sure we had our asses covered appropriately, so a contractual agreement has been in place since day 1. Monday AM I get a phone call from a customer who had initially found us through one of our paid marketing avenues looking for gutter work & possibly some additional items related to rainwater management. My rep went to her home, talked her out of gutters & suggested a rain diverter & flashing for her roof instead. Both suggestions involved modification to her roof, which we absolutely avoid due to both the liability assumed (voiding roof warranties, roof leaks, etc) & that it's outside of our collective expertise. To make this worse, HE returns to do the installation (definitely not in his skill set, especially for us) & the customer Google's how to do the correct installation only to discover that he did it wrong. He did say that "this is not a [My Company] project" to the customer & made up a non-existent company name for his work. But because he came to her initially under our company name, the blowback for his botched installation fell back on us. Fortunately, we've resolved the situation appropriately in conjunction with our roofing partner & fixed before it turned into a bigger issue. We've since severed ties with the rep, but between the money we paid for the marketing & the likelihood this has occurred before - I'm wondering what additional steps I can take to either recoup $$ lost from marketing, protect our reputation from any additional jobs he did we've yet to discover, & to make sure it doesn't happen again. After reviewing his contract, I feel this is a breach of confidentiality; however, I don't have a situation like this explicitly stated in the contract. I couldn't begin to put a monetary number on this because I don't know how far the rabbit hole goes. What do I do? TL;DR: Sales rep used a lead generated from company paid advertising for personal gain, potentially threatening our reputation. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 07:18 PM PDT (my opinion) I have multiple talents in a variety of fields and I have owned and closed a graphic copy shop business in the 90's. I have had various jobs in various fields, and one thing always sticks. If building, doing, making, designing, or any other craft based system is what I am best at, it seems to really make enough money, I will need to make about $1 mil/year in sales to net $250k. At that level, I would spend more time in management and less time doing the stuff I love. My point is that for the majority of small businesses, it's more about being an effective manager, and less about the love of whatever you do. For example: a guy who loves craft beer spends more time managing a business than enjoying craft beer and the love of that field. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:52 PM PDT We recently began partnering with some instagram influencers in our field and have had some early success. Was just wondering if anyone has experience with this and can offer some advice? One of my questions would be if you created a contract and what kind of terms and conditions were included. The sad reality of women and kids when it comes to being successful in business. Posted: 25 Apr 2019 04:37 AM PDT Women and kids will always get in the way to extreme success, it's part of the reason why a lot of women will never transcend the wage-gap. Most hard-working business men work 7 days a week, where as women have to have off to pick up their kids, spend time with them, and shit like that. Plus, if you're stupid, get married and divorce after starting a successful business think Jeff Bezos, she will take half your fortune in the end. [link] [comments] |

Small Business Credit Card Processing Posted: 24 Apr 2019 11:34 PM PDT However tempting it may sound, the truth behind it depicts another story. 75% of small business merchants find it difficult to introduce a new payment method in their process as their consumers aren't ready to accept the change. What Is a Good Interest Rate for Small Business Financing? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:25 PM PDT If you're a small business owner looking for ways to grow your business, you've likely investigated the possibility of acquiring some outside financing in the form of a business loan. Also known as debt financing, this form of funding can be preferable to venture capital, because you maintain control of your business rather than selling off decision-making power in exchange for capital. That being said, the world of small business financing is complex, with many possibilities—some good, some not so good. And the last thing you'll want to do is pay more for funding than necessary. If you're new to the concept of small business financing, you may not know what qualifies as a good interest rate or a bad one. With that in mind, let's review what makes for a good interest rate for the various financing options out there and what to look for when comparing products. [link] [comments] |

Used Restaurant Equipment Store marketing??? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:14 AM PDT Looking for insight on how to drum up more business for a local restaurant equipment store. We sell/rent new and used restaurant equipment. We have a storefront and mostly deal with local restaurants, caterers, food trucks, etc. People from the surrounding areas with drives upwards of a few hours to purchase from us. We basically only deal with people that can come to the store. No ebay, but we do use Craigslist. Owner generally doesn't like selling over the internet, won't take cards over the phone, etc. Which is a shame because our website has some magical SEO. I ask new customers how they found us, and a majority say "Google", with the second best being word of mouth. I'm not sure how to get more people into the store. We've had a storefront for 8 years. We post new equipment we get in on the website. I think our general reputation is fine, though you can't please everyone. Our social game is pretty weak. As of right now, we're pretty much only reminding existing customers we exist, which is fine, but not really growing business. So... any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Question about an expiring lease Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:41 PM PDT I have a lease expiring at the end of this month in a space I have been in for 7 years. The issue is that I forgot that my lease was expiring....I understand this is completely my fault. The building is owned by the local municipality. I received no notification or request to renew or re-negotiate. I just remembered about an hour ago and as it is after business hours, I plan to call first thing in the morning, however I am just curious, if they decided to lease to someone else, am I shit out of luck? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:42 PM PDT We have been contacted by this company claiming that they are calling from Quickbooks. I asked the guy on the phone if he works for Quickbooks he said: "Hmm Hmmm". After a few back-and-forth turns out they are very good liars and they almost got me. The guy on the phone even had me go to help section of QuickBooks and search for them under 3rd party support partners. He was very confident on his lies but when it turned out his listing is not there it was 100% clear that they are a spammer. [link] [comments] |

High price product, long lead times, how do I stock enough inventory for demand?? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:03 PM PDT Hello, I just invented an industry-disrupting product that I strongly believe will sell VERY well. There are no products like it, and the people in this niche are very passionate, and very willing to spend large amounts of cash. My product costs about $100 per piece to manufacture, and I know that when I begin to market it, I will not be able to keep up with demand. The reason I won't be able to keep up with demand is: it takes 3-5 weeks for 500 pieces to get manufactured. How do I structure my sales such that I don't run out of stock? I conservativey (and I mean VERY conservatively) expect to get about 2000 orders a month. That is a COGS of 200K...I don't have that kind of money, which means I don't have enough capital to even buy a month's worth of inventory...how do I make this work? TLDR: I've invented an industry-disrupting product, I have a working prototype, the COGS of even one month of inventory is incredibly high, how do I get this business off the ground? Do I do a pre-order series? Do I just tell people I fulfill orders in batches and tell them that lead time is about 6 weeks? How have other people handled this problem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:44 PM PDT I will soon be starting my first business which will be a marketing agency for real estate companies. My services will include advertising and social media consulting. While those are my main services I will offer. I want to add more, i know starting small then scaling up is the way to go. However, i want to add one to two additional services. I'm just posting this to get ideas while I'm brainstorming ways to be innovative for my clients which are in real estate. Contractors moving everything during a repair, should we be scared or not? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:00 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'll try to make this as short as possible. The space I rent for my business recently flooded due to a new water heater being installed incorrectly (landlord hired non-qualified person). The floors in our unit and the 2 next to us were both ruined and getting new floors installed. My question pertains to our equipment and inventory in the room. They said they would be moving our things to one side of the room and reflooring and then swapping sides. No problem, except we have a lot of pricey equipment and inventory that could be easily broken. Not ever having experienced this yet at our business, I'm not really sure if we are just worrying too much or if there is something we should/could do to help protect ourselves a little (other than already having insurance - the downtime is not good either obviously). Our employees and ourselves have already been (mostly) out of work for about 3ish weeks. We don't have another place to store our things at the moment so I realize we may not have a choice but any advice would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Best way to promote new business? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:41 PM PDT Hello! What are the best websites/resources to promote a new small business that's aimed to teach American Sign Language? Legal Forms/Policies Needed For Daily Fantasy Sports Website Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:14 PM PDT Hello Reddit! I am looking to create my own daily fantasy sports website like Draftkings and Fanduel but different in one way with what it has involved. It's gambling and I know all states carry different laws and policies for gambling related to sports. But I was wondering if anyone here would know where I can find all of the information that is needed and basically proper channels to go through. If not, I still appreciate your time on stopping by and reading my thread plus any tips. Love and Respect, Shaun (ESDrafters) [link] [comments] |
Submitted my application for formation of my LLC. Anything else I can do in the mean time? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:21 PM PDT As title says, I submitted my application a week ago and now I'm trying to figure what can be done without its approval in regards to other permits and licenses that my business will need. As far as I can tell, things like a business license for the city I will be setting up shop in, requires me to have my LLC approved first. Is there any other paperwork I can do for my business that doesn't require it to be approved first or do I need to wait. Of course I'm doing other things like looking for insurance, setting up social media accounts, etc. But as far as other applications that will take time to be approved as well, is there anything I can do? Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |
My ideal audience isn’t online — what are best IRL local marketing strategies? Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:07 PM PDT While I have a website, FB page, and IG profile, my clients aren't often online — there's very little overlap between my followers and my actual client pool. What are better ways to spend time and/or money when you don't want to promote online and want to moderately increase awareness of your services? I'm not the world's most extroverted person, so networking doesn't come naturally to me... Bonus follow-up question: What are good ways to take advantage of online followers when they're not local? I've thought of making a small online product gallery, or creating some sort of educational downloads (like content marketing behind a paywall). Any experiences/tips? [link] [comments] |
Budget friendly credit card processing/point of sale for laptop. Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:23 PM PDT Hi all I'm starting a business and will be doing pop-up shops. I have lots of inventory and expect/hope to do 50-75 sales in a day, one day per month. I do not have a tablet I can use and don't want to use my phone. I will have access to WIFI (is using WIFI for this a terrible idea?) What is the best system for running credit/debit? Must be inexpensive. Do I get a cheap stripe reader on Amazon and use an online payment processing service like PayPal, or something else? Do I get a standalone credit card processor and use it alongside my POS without integrating them? Do I get an all-in-one POS system? Is it worth the money? Has anyone else out there sort of MacGyvered a POS and card processing system? [link] [comments] |
