Is it worth having WIFI set up in my cafe-bar?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:35 AM PDT

My family own a Cafe-Bar (seats around 125) and we're toying with the idea of getting wifi for customers. We are based in a place that gets literally 0 signal so we want to weigh up the pros and cons.

We think the main pro is that people will have the ability to post reviews online whilst at the establishment and not forget once they get home.

What are some other pros & cons?

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: We're in a very remote location in a small town that mainly targets dog walkers and cyclists. We get a very decent amount of custom for where we are.

Edit 2: Sincerely apologise if I've been 'shooting down' responses. Definitely didn't mean to but I guess I already had my mind half made-up and was looking to be convinced otherwise. I really appreciate everyone who's took the time to offer their 2 cents :)

If I own 2 businesses, is there any advantage for one paying the other for services?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:25 PM PDT

I've owned a web design and marketing company for 6 years. This year I'm starting a local based business that will need and benefit from the services my web company offers. I'm obviously going to do everything myself at "no cost", but is there an advantage for company B to pay company A for these ongoing services rendered?

Both businesses are single member LLCs owned by me. The only scenario that comes to mind is if the web company is taxed as an s-corp then this additional income (which is also being written off by company B) will not be subject to self-employment tax.

Is this legal? Is there something else I'm missing or that would be a disadvantage?

Can you call your business ethical if you use Alibaba?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:07 AM PDT

I'm setting up a jewellery company and I want to as ethical as possible. I am using all recycled packaging and I'm designing all my own products but have used companies from India and China found on alibaba to manufacture them. I pay them what they ask for without negotiation and I make sure I look at the info and photos of the company to check the conditions there. I'd love to market myself as an ethical company but not sure if I can by using alibaba?

How much does website speed really effect business ?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:30 AM PDT

Lets say for a local small business will 3 extra seconds of load time be a deal breaker? I can't imagine it really having that big of an impact, then again if you want information quick you will just see it not loading and go back to google to find another site. So is it worth trying to fix speed issues? and what is considered acceptable?

Article that spawned this thought: https://www.curiousfrontier.com/blog/2/5-reasons-your-site-is-loading-slow-and-how-you-can-fix-it

What do do when you have a warehouse full of stuff but no store/shop to sell?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:42 AM PDT

I have invested in alot of wooden furniture in the past year but for financial reasons had to close shop and now have a warehouse that is filled with ALOT handmade wooden furniture. What would be the best way for me to sell what i have and if possible to sell it fast. The prices are a bit high so I wonder how to go about doing it. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks.

    LLC Address/Bank Account

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:27 PM PDT

    Hi,

I created an LLC using IncFile and have a virtual address/mailbox along with a registered agent. When I go to the bank with my docs to open an account, any ideas as to what address I should be using. I don't have a physical office since I work from home. But I also don't want my bank statements, bank cards etc getting sent to the virtual address/mailbox. Is it alright to use my home address for the company bank account? A quick google search brings up posts on potentially piercing the corporate veil etc if I have my home address tied to my business.

    Thanks

LPT: To stop auto-spam calls to your business setup auto-attendant with your VOIP provider.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:46 AM PDT

We were up to 50 spam calls a day in my office, it got totally out of hand. I have researched ways to stop it until i stumbled upon an auto-attendant. Basically it picks up every call and says "if you are a solicitor hang up now. To reach an operator press 1". Did this 3 days ago.. zero spam since!! Huge win for my small business.

Service Business: How to get leads? Do "Free Reports" actually work?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:05 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Friend has a wedding photography site, the sales cycle is 1 year.

They have a huge form on their front page and huge phone number, making it easier for someone visiting their site to call or use the form.

The trouble is, the conversion rate to leads is very low

We are thinking to convert the lead form into a 'free report' style form, such as "Top 10 Ways to .. "

    1. Free Report - Choose a Photographer without getting ripped off
    2. Free Report - Top 10 Locations for Wedding Photos
    3. Free Report - Top 20 Ways to Save money at your Next Wedding

And then continue to send emails to them over the next 12 months

Does this approach actually work? Or is it only fantasy?

Are Virtual Assistants Worth it? Who do you recommend?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:18 AM PDT

My business has been growing exponentially. I have two contractors that do work for me and one part-time W-2 employee that is a stay-at-home mom and hasn't been able to do work for me for months due to her kid, but I still keep her on payroll for when she has time.

I'm kinda drowning in answering emails and phonecalls and SO.MANY.MEETINGS that I feel like maybe I need to hire a virtual assistant to help with some of this. I don't have the budget for another full-time employee right now, so I'm trying to decide whether this is worth it and who is recommended.

I've read a lot of posts on here about poor experiences, and I think the main focus I want is answering emails and creating tickets.

Do you use a system, has it worked for you, and who do you recommend?

Where to start a bank account for my closely held C corp?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:53 AM PDT

Long story short is that I converted my sole proprietorship to a C corp in 2018 because in my situation (high earning W2 spouse, and some other things) that is the most tax advantaged entity for my business now (post U.S. tax changes).

Now I need to set up a a corporate bank account under the corporate name and do business through that account (whereas previously it was all pass through accounting). No biggie EXCEPT my favorite bank that I've been using for decades doesn't do corporate accounts. This really surprised me because they generally do everything else quite well.

I'm on the hunt. What are the considerations I should think about? Any recommendations for banks who do corporate banking well? Any nuances of closely held C corp banking I should think about? I'm really starting from scratch here. I do sometimes get large 5-digit paper checks (vs. ACH) but as long as there is a mechanism for virtual/mail submission, I should be okay.

Before you tell me to look around my neighborhood....FWIW, I'm not inclined to do this locally because the corporation does zero business in the state in which I live and the business is registered in DE. I don't want this corporation tied to my current state of residence.

I travel a ton so could set this account up from just about any major U.S. city.

    Thanks in advance.

Why motivation systems that we create in our team often lead to wrong results?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:52 AM PDT

    Example from history:
in the 19th century British government tried to reduce the amount of cobras in the cities and towns in India. To do that, they introduced incentives for those who would deliver them dead cobras.

    What happened then?

Actually, it led to an opposite result: instead of just killing the existing snakes, smart entrepreneurs decided to open snake farms to grow more cobras.

Like that they could bring more dead cobras, receive more incentives 🤑; but in the end the amount of alive cobras also increased.

    Smart? 🤓
Yes, from the side of those entrepreneurs.
No, from the side of the government (they cancelled those incentives later, though).

This is an example of "maladaptive performance" in play. This so-called "cobra effect" occurs when leaders try to motivate their teams using monetary incentives (money, promotion, etc.), while forgetting about direct motivating factors.

We overestimate the effect of indirect motives (economic, emotional, etc.) and underestimate the effect of direct ones (purpose, potential, play).

I made an overview of the great work conducted by Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor - welcome to share your opinion on such approach to motivation.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:54 AM PDT

I was reading about responsive websites, and was wondering if a fixed website is good enough for the short term when just starting a business. From doing some reading it seems like in 2019 you have to have a responsive site. what do you think?

    Sample non-interference letter

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:57 PM PDT

I have a gas station in orange county, CA. I'm in process of getting my alcohol license. Since my business is located within 100 feet of several residences, I'm required to submit a letter of non-interference. Has anyone done this before? If so, can you share a sample so I can get started on mine. Thank you.

Do any of you accounting guru's know a program that I can connect to quickbooks, it auto fills in the data and it sends a customized KPI report to me and my team each month (I pre-choose which categories go where)? Would be super helpful.

    Reply time of wholesale distributors

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:20 PM PDT

I'm fairly new to the business. I don't really like bugging the wholesale companies but after I send my documentation they seem to not reply until I follow up with a call. I hate to do it but what's a reasonable time to wait to call after sending an email? I understand if I send an email on a Friday or Monday it might take a while to get to since it's the start of the week but my business relies on the fact that I'm able to purchase products from them and I want to begin as soon as possible.

    Best List Service?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT

We're wanting to buy a list of local businesses which fit our criteria and then clean the list with LinkedIn.

Seems there hundreds of list companies out there - probably many of them just resellers.

I know Hoovers and Discover used to be the better ones a few years ago but seeking input from the hive mind here.

    Thanks!

I'm trying to start a business..

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:30 PM PDT

I recently started an LLC with a friend. We plan to do a small urban farm indoors with veggies to grow with microgreens and some other specialty crops. We are looking to get a small business loan of less than 10k, I have decent credit and his is in good standing. How likely are we to get this, what do I need to take to a bank to better the chances other then the basic OA, SOI, and AO?

Getting money to people far away

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:54 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

I work in a small business in a new industry. I'm looking into giving people their pay who live far away. We used to have our delivery driver hand them their pay personally, but we have stopped doing that for certain reasons. Thus, we are looking into a new option to give these people their salary. We are currently using PayPal, but it's a 2-3% fee every transfer. What other options would you all recommend into giving these people their pay?

Best way to walk away from a small business partnership

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:39 AM PDT

For the last 9 years we've operated a small but successful restaurant. We recently just opened a 2nd location, but now me and my partner aren't seeing eye to eye on how to run operations. We have been in business mediation talks but it's becoming more clear we are not going to agree moving forward. I'm going to start looking for another job tonight, but am wondering what would be the best way to leave with 100k+ in debt between loans and credit cards.

Silly, but how do I really pay LLC taxes?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:11 PM PDT

I have an appointment setup with an accountant after April 15, so I'll eventually check that important box. However, take the following scenario into account:

    2 Member LLC

    1million in revenue year 1

    Each take a 230k salary

    That's 540k of profits

If I understand it correctly, we'd each pay tax on 270k, correct?

That said, how would I actually pay that if it's above and beyond my personal savings account and salary? Can it be paid from the company checking? Do I take a distribution around tax season to cover it?
