Is there a catch to being a notary?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:11 PM PDT

I've been a wantrepreneur for a while now, and I'm looking to change that, by becoming a notary as a form of side income. From what I understand, a notary's responsibilities are:

    • Get certified for 200-400 dollars
    • (If mobile) Go to client locations
    • Notarize documents

If I'm not mistaken, most notaries make their money with travelling fees, or other fees like "rush" fees or "after midnight" fees. I've been doing research for the past week or two and so far I haven't been able to find anything really definitive on how to become a notary, besides getting certified.

If any notaries are reading this, how do you get clients? Can you really just start charging 100 dollars right off the bat? Are there any mistakes I should avoid making? I'm appreciative of any help anyone can provide, and even if you have none, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read this.

I'm looking to restart my attempt to expand my travel photo business. I could use advice.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:24 PM PDT

I run a nature and travel photo business at my college. I'm doing a business management undergrad degree. I sell greeting cards, calendars, and wall prints. I want to start selling photo murals too. I am looking to expand outside of my college. I will target those interested in fine art such as art collectors, people for prints and murals and wall decorations, and those looking for greeting cards. I have part of my business plan in writing along with many details.

I have many details worked out. I'm aware that I must create value to the customers in every step and that my goods are wants, not needs. I will keep business activity separate from personal activity. I still have more details to address.

I will sell prints online on an on demand basis. I have an automated fulfillment lab selected. For murals, I will work directly with clients. At fairs, I will sell ready to hang prints, individual greeting cards, boxed greeting cards, and wall calendars.

I am trying to decide whether to establish my business as a c-corp, s-corp, or LLC. For background, I would like to have friends and others pitch in money then I share the profits with the same people. Let's say hypothetically that I should order $1000 of inventory, one person pitched in $100, and I earn $5000 in revenue. I would pay that person $500. I want to do this while staying out of trouble, minimizing paperwork, and minimizing the required taxes owed. I need a good and preferably convenient to form contracts like this. I want to do this rather than use loans. My concern with loans is the lender may be more concerned with getting its money back instead of watching the business succeed. There are other reasons why I want to avoid loans. Who can I turn to in Houston for legal advice concerning this? What's your advice?

I want to get people interested in luxurious wall prints and murals. I want to target businesses and people looking for high end wall decorations. How should I approach businesses the right way concerning this? I learned many things in the business school about negotiations. Two of them is both sides should be better off and I must think in the other side's terms.

For reporting purposes, I will use accrual based accounting. What cost of goods sold method should I use when paying taxes?

What software do you recommend for inventory management, accounting, and record keeping?

What books newsletters, magazines, etc. should I read concerning starting a small business and the other things I described? I may subscribe to the Harvard Business Review too. What advice do you have in general?

Advice needed: Will you use this product?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 02:12 AM PDT

Hey all, I have a simple idea that I wanted to gather some feedback from small business owners here.

What is the problem I'm trying to solve?

    - As a consumer, I see every brick & mortar business using a variety of signs & prints for various business purposes (e.g. "Tips Welcome" or "Cash Only" for restaurants & cafes or "Please Put Your Weights Back on the Rack" for gyms)

    - These signs work, but are typically very plain (at best), but aesthetically displeasing & messy most of the times. This disrupts the interior design & customer experience of the shop.

    - What if we can help small businesses create functional & aesthetically pleasing signs / prints easily and cheaply?

Who do I think this is useful for?

    - Small business owners / marketing managers in the industries of F&B (e.g. restaurants, cafes, bars) and fitness (e.g. gyms, yoga studios. etc.)

    - The ideal target businesses are not pure utilities, and should be selling aspirational products / experiences (hence, the desire to maintain a consumer experience with decor & prints)

    What is the solution?

    - A platform for business owners to buy & download PDF designs of prints / signs for their business / shop. We will not customise these prints / signs for each shop (i.e. not an agency model), but we will design these signs to fit into different types of design look & feel (e.g. Minimalist Cafe style, or Retro style for cafes). Based on the shop's decor / brand, you as the business owner can choose the right collection
    - Given that it is not customised, these prints will be bundled & sold as a collection (e.g. "Minimalist Cafe style" with signs for "Cash only", "Self-service", "Tips are welcome", "Please leave us a review", etc. for $39.99). The number of signs in a collection, as well as the pricing is merely an illustration.

Do you (or someone you know) think that this might be useful? Or please let me know if you've any feedback. Thanks!

Software for small cafe w some existing POS services

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 03:09 AM PDT

Hi everyone, newbie in the business world here.

So I'm now in charge of a cafe, that's also a community/drop-in space to offer support (I'm the community worker but also got thrown in to run the small cafe).

We have an existing POS system (physical machine with eftpos) and basically nothing else.

-- Any suggestions for basic software for a very small cafe with 2 employees (including me)? It's to manage manual recording of sales, customers, suppliers and preferably add-ons where I can include the stats for the people I'm supporting.

Hope this makes sense! Any suggestions would be helpful, I'm running everything from my notebooks and am so confused.

Is the foreign fee to register your LLC in any state a yearly thing?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 02:10 AM PDT

Im going to form my LLC in Delaware but I am going to conduct my business in Texas. I see that you have to pay a fee to register as a foreign business first before you begin conducting business in the state of Texas. The fee is steep but I am willing to pay it if its a one time charge. That is what I am unsure of though. Do I have to continually pay this fee yearly, or is that something that I just pay once.

Funding options for a new business - HELOC?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2019 12:25 AM PDT

How would you fund a new business? My wife and I have a considerable amount of equity built up in our home. Would that be a safe option to use?

    Background

I am looking to start a new professional consulting business. I have a few partners lined up and our first few years of operating costs would be low as we can easily perform our work remotely from our home offices. In fact, our own payroll would be the greatest cost. I'd estimate the start up costs to be about that of opening a CPA office with three partners on board. I can also ask the partners to contribute or take out HELOC to help make this happen.

Here are a few working assumptions.

    • There will be less than $10,000 in startup costs
    • Operating costs will be less than $20,000 (we're consultants!)
    • Payroll would be easily our greatest cost, but can be adjusted as needed
    • We'd need to dedicate 40+ hours each week, so working another job isn't a great option

Are there any resources you'd recommend reading to learn more on the topic?

    Hiring SEO specialists

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:40 PM PDT

Hi all. Looking to hire someone within SEO to conduct a review of my website in order to boost our rankings with the search engines. Our posts are regular (a few a day) but become out of date usually within a week or two (articles based on weekly events).

What should I look for when hiring one as everyone seems to do it nowadays? Are there certain things I should obtain from them?

    Expensing secondhand purchases from individuals

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 10:28 PM PDT

Does anyone have experience with reselling secondhand goods that are bought from random individuals? I'm trying to report personal income from reselling a small volume of textbooks. Not enough to justify getting an accountant. I obviously have no receipts to support my cost of goods, although I've kept good records on my end. I have names but very few addresses of the sellers. I generally have facebook message threads that include the price. I'm in Canada, but I imagine this problem happens anywhere. Am I sol if the CRA audits me?

How to sell my partners products through my website

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 10:54 AM PDT

Hello All! I'm a long time lurker and first-time poster so your patience is much appreciated! I'm a college student and have begun my first business. I am currently using Squarespace to sell my sustainable clothing line. I also partner with sustainable like-minded businesses to sell their products. I'm having trouble with this. I know there are some third-party companies that can help me sell their products. What I mean by this is that when someone visits my site and purchase one of my garments they can also purchase a partner's sustainable jewelry. Now I don't have the infrastructure to keep their inventory so is there a way that when they check out through Squarespace and pay for the jewelry that information can be sent to my partner, the inventory can be taken out, shipped to them, and they will receive payment? This may be wishful thinking but I'm not sure where else to turn. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Opening a small retail cheese shop and need POS terminal suggestions

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:03 PM PDT

Searching for the right POS terminal for my shop. I want to track inventory and will need to print barcodes. I don't have much experience with these terminals since I've worked in mostly old school shops.

I talked to someone from my bank and they are pushing Poynt but the reviews on this site cardfellow are shockingly bad. I'm leaning towards Square even though they take a high percentage but would love to know if there is something more suitable for my needs. Any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Good inventory management software?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 02:23 PM PDT

I manage a start-up company and luckily the orders started to scale up. So far, even the excel would be enough, but I wonder if there is some good and simple inventory management software free for low scale small businesses?
So far we have 6 types of products, but all of them share a majority of components. Number of sales are not high, we sell around 4 units per month.

Some accounting and order management features integrated in the software would be useful as well.

    Advise on hiring/working with photographers.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2019 01:03 PM PDT

    Guys hi,

I need to hire a photographer to do series of photos on travel topic (photos that we need are not on photo stock sites)

Found couple of capable guys i am talking to now, one thing that i question - most of them want to keep copy right on photos and license them to you. So any time you want to do something else with them - pay.

Should i just accept it? Or should i try to negotiate and have copyright assigned to us?
