Do you streamline your entire business? What is the acceptable standard?

What aspects do you scale/hire/upgrade that you hypothesize is important at that moment?

Hiring graphic designer on a retainer for the business

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:04 AM PDT

I currently do logo design and branding for companies as a freelancer. One of the biggest issues with this is steady income stream, so I decided to invest my time researching retainers.

With $2000 per month I would be able to start my own company (small business). I'm currently negotiating with one possible client who would pay me around $1000 per month for 25 hours of work. I would do all kind of graphic design for him.

I had some clients in the past who are pretty active on social media, but their images could be much more professional if they pay to someone who knows what he/she is doing.

My first step will be to reach to my past clients and offer my monthly service.

Can I hear from you (business owners)...Have you ever hired a graphic designer on a retainer?

Do you have a constant need for graphics?

How realistic that small business owner will hire someone on a retainer?

Please share your thoughts on this, I would like to see it from your point of view.

    Thank you.

EDIT: I wanted to get insight in your experience with retainers, but I got SO MANY offers requesting to see my portfolio. Getting tierd so I will post it here (it can be found on my profile pretty easily anyway). Please let me know if I should remove it.

    Business startup advice

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 01:26 AM PDT

Hi there, I am a young woman who is looking into starting her own business. I am considering opening a bar for starters and hopefully expanding my horizons in the future as I grow financially. I am based in the U.K. and wanted to know what main tips anyone had for me in regards to starting up such a thing. Even basics and seemingly obvious pointers can be helpful to me, just any advice you have!

Best forms and surveys builder? Searching for an alternative to Typeform and Jotform

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 11:57 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

Searching for a reliable app to build online forms and surveys. I'm running a small agency. We're using forms and surveys to collect the information from our customers and generate new leads. We've tried a few tools over the past half a year. Typeform has been the most intuitive so far, but it's really expensive and doesn't let us brand our pages properly, always that generic "Typeform look". Jotform on the other hand does allow us to add a bit more branding, but its interface is really messy, I had to spend hours trying to figure out how to set up basic things.

Any modern and accessible form builders out there?

Business start date for tax purposes?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 09:02 PM PDT

Maybe I'm being dense here, but any answer helps. We've got a project on Patreon, and currently break even nearly every month, but have not yet formed/legitimized the business (US-based), but that is all in progress (to become an LLC). We're trying to avoid any individual tax burden, so if one of us claims the Patreon money each month until the LLC is formed, and we register the business within this year, are we liable for taxes based on the income drawn from BEFORE we become an LLC, or does this strictly go by tax year? Thanks!

    Unjustifed Bad Reviews on Google

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:55 PM PDT

Hi, I own a small business operating in the Lower Mainland of BC Canada and we haven't had a good week. We haul away junk/donations for residents and business owners, about 5-6 every work day.

We usually only have a job go sour once a month but this month we've had 4 and 2 threatened to leave bad reviews everywhere. Still waiting for one to pop up though.

The complaints are very silly. My employee measured a pile of wood and said this will cost whatever and after loading the customer was upset they didn't take a small pile to the side which wasnt measured or mentioned until afterwards for the same price. Another was mad we hauled away the wrong items for his tenant although he couldn't be bothered to be on-site for the pick up to confirm what was to be removed and his tenant told us too..

Im 20 and have worked to establish this business since i was 16 and with only 5 star reviews so far I don't want our reputation ruined. Lots of people check google first and even with a 4.9 rating they'll choose another since lots have a 5.0 rating.

What can I do to prevent these reviews or to combat them once i get them? Already tried reaching out to explain it better, to apologize, and to even offer a partial refund. Didn't help.

(I know i misspelled unjustified, dont know how to fix it lol)

    Profit

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:51 PM PDT

I'm new to the business I own/manage. Currently I'm offering pretty good discounts to customers in order to build a name/reputation and create return customers. However I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right. I buy a product for $101. Shipping costs me an additional $9. Total cost is now $110. I sell the product for $120. After taxes it costs the customer $130.56. Normally the same product goes for $143+ online. Is the $10 profit margin ok? Or am I doing something wrong.

Where to buy modern looking professional retail fixtures?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:42 PM PDT

I currently own a womenswear brand, and I'm moving into a brick and mortar location. I'm looking for store fixtures that are modern (i.e. the kind you'll see in Kate Spade or & other stories). Everything I find online looks outdated, so I'm not sure where to look. I sell women's clothing, handbags, and jewelry. Also anything with hidden storage underneath would be a bonus as well.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Created a product in concept stages, what next?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:39 PM PDT

    Hello,

Over the past 6 months I have spent my spare time creating a new electrical product.

I sourced the electronic components from China, put them together and also created the enclosure for the device using a consumer grade 3d printer. I do not want the final product to be "printed plastic", I'd like it to be made with higher quality materials (metal border and opaque surrounds to allow light to pass through)

Now that my product has gone through various concept designs and is almost finalised, what is the next step I need to take for mass production? I'm not sure what type of manufacturer I need to approach, I'm based in the UK. I would also like to advertise this product as "Made in Britain" because all of the assembly will be done here.

I would really appreciate some guidance on this from anyone who has experience in this field.

Managing Remote Workers - My New Employee is Padding Hours?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 09:06 AM PDT

I hired a new Virtual Assistant from PH 3 weeks ago. He is very passionate about our business and industry and is pleasant and respectful to work with. Overall, he completes tasks well and has given us some great suggestions he learned from previous similar jobs. However, he is logging WAY too many hours for the amount work assigned. On some days, as much as 4-5 times the number of hours I would expect for those tasks.

The job is supposed to be 35-40 hours a week and he logged over 50 last week. For reference, my other employee logged 20 hours and did 10x the work of my new assistant.

So I asked my new assistant about the increase in hours, and why the tasks were taking so long. He had some excuses (the websites for his research were in a foreign language and difficult to navigate, the internet was slow). I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and I understand the frustration of slow internet, but it shouldn't have taken that long.

I checked the timestamps in Google Drive and our CRM system for Sunday, and he added an extra 1.5 hours at the end of when the last data was entered or changed. I didn't call him out on the timestamps, but asked what else he completed at the end of that day. He said he reviewed some of our customer service emails not assigned to him, to see if he could learn anything there and watched some online tutorials (which I didn't ask him to do).

So I have asked him to work with me to prioritize work and to review what he is doing. I asked him to let me know if he is approaching the 40 hours per week before working over that. I am checking in with him more and trying to manage him more closely.

I'm just still a bit uncomfortable with the situation and feel my trust has been tested. Any tips for managing remote workers and preventing wasted time?

Have to chose a guy to hire full time. Who would you rather employ? The slower quiet guy who does 20 reports consistently every day (100 per week) or the guy who is faster and kinda arrogant however he does 160 reports a week but is very inconsistent (60 one day, 20 then 40etc.)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:45 PM PDT

Essentially is consistency better than speed? (Both parties are equally accurate on their reports)

    Growing my counseling practice

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:00 PM PDT

Hello all I have been running a successful solo counseling practice as an LLC in Washington state, and am having to turn away clients as I am booked. I want to grow but don't really know how to. I know that the easy answer is hire another therapist but that would me a bunch of new expenses and hiring a receptionist.

I know that independent contractors are a thing but I can not ethically say that they are totally independent and they would be working in the field of my business so it crosses that line.

I have thought about starting a partnership with the new hire but that's a risky venture with a random person. Just wondering if there are other options I may be missing in terms of a structure. Appreciate any thoughts Thanks

    Advertising/Influencer Platform? Potential idea

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:58 AM PDT

Hi there Reddit, I have been thinking about this for a while now, as I know some people who would be considered locally famous and have a decent social media following and are looking to capitalize on the current state of the entire "influencer" market situation that is happening, but obviously they are not famous enough for people to come knocking at their doors with money.

I Have been thinking for a while that potentially a good solution for people like this would be to create some sort of market place or common place for both sides of the operation.

    A) the companies could go and see potential marketers by clicking their Instagram profile or whatnot, and reading other info about them.

    B) the people on social media with the following could go and see companies that could are looking for people to market their products.

I'm basically wondering if this is even a viable idea. I genuinely think that it would be very useful; however, it could very well be useless.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Printable PDFs to make running your business easier

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 12:11 PM PDT

I'm designing a printables pack for business owners and wondered if anyone here has used them before?

If so, which printables do you use most often and find the most helpful?

If not, what do you think would help you the most?

Some examples: a well designed to do list, pomodoro tracker, monthly goals worksheet, time log, client info, product inventory, keyword list, monthly income breakdown, etc.

All insights super appreciated, thank you!

    Advice for a customer request

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:56 AM PDT

Any advice would help. We have a customer claiming they want to purchase one of every item we sell. Which are color/glitter products. The current number of items is 91. This will be our largest order since launching. However, the customer is asking for a 50% discount which she claims to be receiving from other similar businesses. I'm looking for advice for this because 50% seems a bit much for a non-wholesale order although it is a large order. Any help would be fantastic. Thank you!

    Business name

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 09:27 AM PDT

Not sure if it's just me but it is so hard to come up with a business name. Especially one that I end up liking months down the road. Havnt been able to come up with a name lately and just wondering if people have any ideas on how to brainstorm names? Is it normal to not like the name of your business? Places to go to receive help in this?

What kind of licensing do I need for Wedding Planning?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 03:23 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I've been seriously considering starting a small business as a wedding planner since start up costs are low and I've gained a lot of experience working with vendors in my current 9-5. I live in Houston, TX. I'm basically curious as to what licensing I'll need to obtain before I start conducting business. I don't know if I should obtain any insurance, either. I guess I just don't really know where to start, at all.

Can someone here offer me some guidance on what my first steps should be?

    Thank you

    Need help: Inventory recording

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Hello. I have a small team and we constantly share devices amongst ourselves. The problem we have is when a person needs a specific device, they are unsure of who has it currently which leads them to asking almost everyone in the team if they have it to track it down. We tried keeping an online list of the devices with people updating the list when they borrow a device, but this doesn't seem to be working because things move quickly and people forget to update the list.

Is there any sort of inventory recording process so that if a person borrows a device, that device is recorded under their name automatically, and we can see the history of the device? I was thinking maybe some sort of scanning process?

[Long] A life changing question of strategy.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 01:13 PM PDT

Hola! I run a chemical trading business. Let us say, A and B are used to manufacture C. Both A and B are made in my country but not C. So I import and sell substantial amount of this. C currently does not have a big market but is slowly replacing A in its primary application. As much as 50 percent of all A produced, is used in that application. Eventually, all A might be replaced by C unless another alternative comes in. So I see a big demand of C in future. But C is not very difficult to make and these companies are giants. C is just not in their radar yet.

Now, I am working on C, I know the market and the margins. I am itching to set up a C plant in my country. I am already selling it and I could start small, according to current demand. But I fear that the day A manufacturers find about C, they will set up a plant. I probably can not compete because they will have economics of scale. Plus I'll have to buy A from them. So they'll have cheaper raw materials and all the powers that come with scale and big money.

Should I drop the idea because future is uncertain? What are my options in such a situation? Do large countries nevertheless dominate every market? How do small producers compete in a commodity product?

TlDr: if a big supplier of your raw material starts making the final product, what will you do? Will you shut shop or fight? And if fight, how?
