How long does it take to hear from someone else’s insurance?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 05:50 PM PDT

My neighbor backed into my car and they filed a claim with their insurance. How long does it typically take to hear back from them? Also how difficult is it going to be to get them to use OEM parts/paint? Bumper is deeply scuffed so I would assume they'll just replace/paint a whole new one but they could probably just repaint this one as the damage is only paint deep as far as I can tell.

    Umbrella Policy for artwork sales?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT

I make artwork at home and ship it out with most of my sales through Etsy. Customers are usually well off and consider $600 nothing for their artwork purchase. It's all stuff that'll hang on the wall and is low liability (never received complaints or issues over 6 years)--sans the potential of it dropping on one's floor (like any picture would).

I attempted to get insurance through Bunker which directed me to Coversmart which is a Berkshire Hathway firm. But they dropped the ball on me (Need to call directly, etc) and somehow whilst speaking with Geico my auto insurer I asked about an umbrella policy--as the saleswomen was pretty good, and I figured for $10 a month (better than nothing) for a million it's not a bad deal as I can cancel it later if needed.

In the end I eventually want a dedicated plan for my business to cover machinery and specifically products in customer's homes but money is obviously a concern but perhaps this policy is useless...

For instance in the event that a wedding gift breaks (ruined event, embarrassment, whatever), a picture falls off the wall (kills one's cat or dents the floor), or a customer has a personal vendetta against me (God only knows)--would an umbrella policy cover me who's making under $30K a year peddling stuff on Etsy?

I've got around 600 pieces of artwork in homes worth an average of a solid million plus and so I feel there's some liability here but I could be paranoid to say the least and thus am here to get $0.02 of advice.

Geico just doubled my rate and I'm looking for alternatives

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 10:40 PM PDT

    Hello,

I just finished my first 6 month contract with Geico and they renewed my car insurance of one car for two drivers for double the amount I was paying. I called them and told me that they changed the formula that they were using that now counts the experience of drivers (my fiancé just recently got her driver's license) but I don't really get how this makes it double the premium I have to pay.

I'm looking for other options but it seems like the other mainstream ones like Progressive are charging around the same. Was I underpaying then? Should I just stick to Geico or are there other options?

Other driver hit my car and wants to pay out of pocket

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 08:53 AM PDT

Another driver was in a rush and pulled out of his parking spot with his foot on the gas hitting my car with me in it while I was waiting at a red light. He was very polite and apologetic but begged me to let him settle the accident out of pocket (because apparently someone hit his car not to long ago and he is in the middle of an insurance claim?) I took his information and said I'd be in contact but didn't make any promises. I've never been in an accident before so here are my questions.

    1. Since the other driver is 100% at fault who's insurance pays? I have crappy insurance with a high deductible so I'd hate to have to pay anything if it's not my fault.

    2. Will my insurance rate go up even though I wasn't at fault?

    3. I've been feeling sore since the accident on the side of the impact and it's been gradually getting worse. Would his insurance cover doctors visits and even lost work hours etc. if need be? Im a classical musician so I depend on my body to perform and work.

    4. If I decide to go with insurance how long does all this stuff typically take to process?

    Thanks in advance.

2004 Volvo probably totaled, need advice on next steps

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 06:18 PM PDT

2004 Volvo S80. Today I was in a crash, with the other driver at fault. I was traveling straight through a green light, and they, apparently not seeing me, turned left into my path of travel. We collided, no injuries. Police gave them a citation for not yielding to oncoming traffic. Their insurance will presumably be covering everything.

There is damage to the driver's side headlight, the front bumper, and the hood is crumpled. Other damage internally has not been assessed. Photo: https://imgur.com/a/DKBqHSZ?

My question is: should we repair the car or take cash potentially for a down payment on a new car? If it is totaled, about how much money will we get?

    Factors:

    • The car is 15 years old with just about 200,000 miles on it
    • I was planning on giving the Volvo to my dad because my girlfriend and I are moving across the country in August, we are moving to a city and will most likely be using only her car (newly purchased)
    • I go to college 25 mins away from my apartment, and I need a car until August
    • I am a student, so my budget is very limited

Please let me know if this is the wrong place to post this or if you have any suggestions for subreddits for which I will receive more relevant advice. (I originally posted this on r/MechanicAdvice and they directed me here)

    Question about homeowner's insurance claim

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 04:07 PM PDT

So my home was affected by hurricane Michael, not too much damage, just lost some shingles, but I'm probably gonna need new roof anyway. Or new shingles anyway.

Insurance already cut me 3 checks totalling about ~$8,700. Two of them are made out to me AND my mortgage lender, third is just to me for $500.

My question is, should I go ahead and try to cash them as is or should I let a legit roofer do an estimate and negotiate with the insurance for a higher amount should the roofer feel it's necessary? I guess what I'm getting at is, by cashing the checks now, does that forfeit any possibility of getting more should more damage show up? They expire come June so I don't wanna wait too long (I've been deployed till now so I wasn't around to get it fixed immediately, but I'm pretty sure there's no additional damage).

    Speeding Ticket, Ohio

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 01:58 PM PDT

Got a speeding ticket for 61 in a 35. The speed limit was 55 and dropped to 35 without me realizing. Police officer said that I could go to court to get 2 point violation dropped so I would just have to pay the fine and said that he would be willing to work with the prosecutor. I have enough money to pay for the fine and probably a larger fine if thats what the judge decides, but don't have enough to hire an attorney. My main concern is my insurance premium increasing due to this ticket, what is my best course of action? I have a prior accident on my record from last year also.

Is it my anxiety or am I right to be stressed?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 08:53 AM PDT

So I've been an agent at an independent mom and pop insurance agency for a year and a half. So I'm learning still and building a book. About 4 months ago a brokerage rep waltzes in and hands us a referral list of nonfleet trucking leads and my boss says "hey! This should be your specialty!"

So now it is. That's cool. Tough racket as you all know and an ever-changing industry but that's not my problem.... I'm not even unconfident that I cant learn all that needs to be learned about trucking. It's that I've found a small amount of success too quickly. I'm a high anxiety guy. And the people that I work for "saw something in me and took a chance on me". So while I'm still learning all I need to learn in regards to trucking I'm selling as well, and somehow being successful.

There is so much money on the line in trucking. With clientele who have absolutely no love for you. I am paranoid and gripped in fear that I'm going to make a mistake that will result in an E&O claim and hurt my lil agency. Am I taking on more than I can chew or is this my anxiety talking?

    Edit: spelling error

My insurance doesn't come active until the first. If I go the ER before then, will they deny my coverage?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 06:59 AM PDT

long story short, I lost my job after an illness I thought I could overcome on my own, but when I realized I cannot, I didn't have insurance to get treated. I put in for it a month ago, and it comes active on the 1st. Just four more days.

I've been living off of savings in the meantime, almost burned through, and so my life is quite literally riding on this new insurance plan going through. Despite worsening and admittedly physically damaging symptoms, I have avoided going to the ER. My fear is that they will say "oh we see that you were getting insurance and then planning on using it immediately. That's not allowed, sorry", then deny the coverage. Insurance companies doing things like that killed my dad so I think I'm right to be concerned, but my friends think I'm being reckless and stupid.

If it makes a difference, it is the subsidized Health Insurance through the Marketplace, not through an employer.

So if I go to the ER, would my insurance company see it and likely deny me?

What's the benefit of adding a 2nd driver (drive 4 times a month) to an auto policy?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2019 08:55 PM PDT

My mom insisted on adding me just in case I use her car but I only need to use it 4 time out of the month. I don't know how much she's paying for having me as the 2nd driver. So my question is what are the benefit of paying more money, does her insurance extend the same coverage to me and what if she don't add me as a drive but i still drive her car anyway?

    Diminished Value for Car

    Posted: 27 Apr 2019 05:45 AM PDT

I have a 2016 RAV4 with 19500 mile and live in CAlifornia.I'm currently looking to sell and because of an accident I was in last year, all the quotes for my car have come in 1k or more below KBB. Last year I was rear ended because a work truck two cars behind me wasn't paying attention and hit the car behind me which in turn hit me causing 10k worth of damage to the rear door. Car was fine enough to drive home with that day and the paint job looks great. There is a police report and he is at fault.

When looking up information to trade, without my VIN or accident my car is around 19500, but with my VIN and that accident I've received appraisals for 16899 and 17000. Is devaluation of my car possible and do I need said car in my possession to try for it? I'm looking to sell my RAV4 and get a smaller car in the near future. KBB Fair is 18,614-20,111 while my car is almost new looking inside as I'm the only person who drives it and I only use it to and from work for a couple days a week since I mostly work from home. I just wanted to ask this community for their opinion on seeking diminished value for the car, or if I just have to suck it up and eat that cost. TYIA
