Home Burglary.... question about insurance documents.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:59 AM PDT

My home was broken into and pretty much all my valuable belongings were taken. I called the police, insurance etc. My insurance company sent me some documents to sign and send back.

The cover letters mentions the "sworn statement in proof of loss" which I have no problem filling out but thrown in the mix is a "Authorization" form that I do take issue with and it is not mentioned in the cover letter.

This document is a request to authorize numerous institutions and entities to allow "all state" access to a lot of finical documents that I don't see as being needed except for them to try and out them selves from replacing my items based on externals factors.

it request things in regards to : salary and employment records, mortgage records, income tax returns and supporting docs, bank statements or records, finances or installment purchases, credit standing or rating, insurance claim history any and all insurance records, utility records/billings, cellular records/billings. Police records..

To me this is allowing a lot of access to finical documents and makes me question is this standard practice? should I hire a lawyer? do I have to sign this document? I get some things are needed to prevent insurance fraud, but this seems excessive in nature.

Car rental for not at-fault accident

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:34 PM PDT

Got rear ended so I'm going to have to have my car in the shop for a few days for repairs. It's pretty much in the bag as I have dashcam footage that shows that I wasn't at fault. I'm just wondering, am I going to be stuck with a tiny eco-car while I wait, or will I be able to get something that's a little bigger and luxurious. And if so, how?

For reference, my car is fairly old, as it's a 2005 Acura TL. But those are considered luxury, aren't they?

23 years old, I have horrible teeth. My work does not offer direct benefits but does offer $1000 ONLY for a health insurance plan (no direct cash, HSA, FSA, etc). I would like to get braces.

My work does not offer benefits. They do offer $1000 per month to offset a health insurance plan. I think this mean I have to get a plan with comprehensive coverage like health + dental + vision as long as health is there.

I want to get braces really badly. What are my options?

    Underwriting Graduate Program

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:27 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am graduating in may (Bachelor in Finance) and I am in the process of looking for a job. I have an opportunity with a big insurance company who has a graduate program where they train you during a year before giving you a job. They would train me to be an underwriter but I dont know in what field yet as that will be determined during the 1 year training. I do know that it is strictly commercial insurance. I have no experience in insurance but this seems like a good opportunity. However, I don't know any underwriters so it is difficult for me to understand exactly what I am getting into. As a graduate student, it seems like a great opportunity but I am worried about the long term. Can underwriters use what they learned in other jobs ? I feel like if I take this job, I will be an underwriter for the rest of my life and my skills will be useful only in underwriting jobs. Is that true ? I have no idea if I would even like the job so committing myself to a life long career path with little to no room for maneuver seems absolutely crazy to me. Essentially I would like to know if getting in this program is good even if I am not sure I want to make a career out of this. If three years down the line I decide to go in another direction, am I going to start over or will I be able to use my knowledge in another job ? Sorry if this isn't clear I am kinda freaking out about all this and english isnt my first language. Thanks !

18 year old, got a speeding ticket (NJ)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:24 AM PDT

I received a speeding ticket for going 35 mph in a 25 mph zone. In NJ, that is a 2-point violation and $95 fine.

Once the points are added to my record, if I take a defensive driving course immediately after (in NJ, you can take a 6-hour online course and have 2 points removed from your record), will my insurance company (Progressive) ever know about the ticket? I understand that insurance companies don't typically constantly check your DMV record, and instead wait until it is time to renew your policy.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Affordable health insurance/medicaid for an independent college student?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 12:38 PM PDT

Long story short, my mother disowned me and took me off of her insurance plan. It's the only way I can pay for my antidepressants. I'm also in need of dental work and an eye exam on top of having chronic chest pains that I don't know the cause of and I have no idea how I'm going to pay for it.

My university offers insurance coverage but $1200 per semester is just too steep for me. That's more than tuition and books per semester.

Does anyone know some plans I can enroll in where the monthly price isn't too bad? Can I apply for medicaid? I was never taught any of this and I've been thrust into the real world all of a sudden. I live in NC if that helps.

Geico NYC - which car security features help with cost?

Drove away from gas pump with nozzle in car, do I have the right idea?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:38 AM PDT

You can see my post history and read my TIFU post about this for the backstory. The TL;DR is I drove away from a pump with the nozzle still in and broke the hose at the safety disconnect. But for my question here I just want to understand the insurance side of this.

I'm not sure what the cost of repair will be yet. My state has a law that insurance companies can't place a surcharge on insurance premiums for property damage claims of less than $1000. So this means that for any claims less than $1000, the case for going through insurance is cut & dry, I think?

My concern is what will happen if the cost is greater than $1000 to repair, which seems possible (albeit on the high end) from my research. Before this I've had a totally clean driving record for 9 years of driving history. I was insured through Geico but switched to Progressive last year to save money. If the cost is over $1000 and I have insurance pay for it is there a likelihood that they'll jack my rates up or perhaps even drop me since I've only been on for 7 months now? It would be painful to separate from $1000+ cash but I could do it if it made long-term financial sense.

    Thanks for any advice.

UK - Haven't driven for 8 years, car insurance question

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:09 AM PDT

Hey /r/insurance! I've had my full driving license for 8 years now, but i haven't been driving for about 7 years (small city, not needed a car etc). But now I want to buy a car within the next few months. When i was driving, it was in my parents' car, and i was briefly put onto their insurance. No accidents / no claims.

How would i go about shopping for car insurance now? The insurance comparison site only asked how long i'd had my license for, and if i ever made any claims. But this is probably assuming i've been driving for those years + had no claims.

    Any advice? Thanks!
