Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Job market bounces back in March with 196,000 gain in payrolls

Decent report that brings back the idea that the economy is still expanding even if at a smaller pace. I could still potentially see a rate cut before year's end but it's certainly a smaller chance after this month's report.

Thoughts on 3x Daily Leveraged ETFs and Index Funds?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2019 04:29 AM PDT

These seem to be quite popular at the moment. Lots of people are very critical of betting on daily market movements.

Would be keen to get some insight into where these funds could be valuable (if at all), or if anyone is invested.

Capitalize on the new meatless meat market that will form soon

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:52 AM PDT

With burger king creating a meatless whopper and fully succeeding in making it taste like a whopper - I see currently massive market (anything meat) declining; and a new market (meatless meat) growing and quickly taking over.

How to capitalize on this? Is there cattle commodities that one can short? Meatless meat companies leading the charge that one can go long? Other creative ways to invest? Tertiary markets that would also benefit?

Get creative guys and gals - could be a boom like marijuana. Let's have some discussions

EDIT: when I'm saying meatless - I should be more clear. I mean lab grown meat - because it's still meat and sustainable

A tool to detect crossover between investments

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 07:33 PM PDT

Is there a site or online tool that lets you enter two or more mutual funds/ETFs (or preferably an entire portfolio) and check for crossover/concentration risk? Like it could identify things like "across all investments, you're 7% invested in JNJ" and then give the weighting percentages (and dollar amount) for each fund that contains the stock.
It's easy to see the top 10 investments in one particular fund, but I'm interested in seeing the top 10 stocks collectively across all of my mutual funds and ETFs.

    4/5/2019 Nike's recently published 10-Q Recap

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:43 PM PDT

Nike releases its latest quarterly filing on 4/4/2019. Below is a recap on some of the things we noted

    Footnotes Recap

    • Management identified a misstatement related to historical allocation of repurchases of Class B common stocks. Nike has revised shareholder's equity for Q217 and Q317 through a reduction to capital in excess of the stated value of $3 billion and an incremental $0.1 billion, respectively, and an increase to retained earnings for the same amount. Note, these changes have no impact on previously reported income and cash flow.
    • Leases (Topic 842), which replaces existing lease accounting guidance, and ASU No. 2018-11, issued in July 2018, is expected to be adopted on 6/1/2019. We recommend review this change in 10-Q and reassess its impact to your valuation model.
    • Jan 2019, the European Commission opened a formal investigation to examine whether the Netherlands has breached State Aid rules with respect to Nike. An adverse outcome can increase Nike's Netherlands income tax
    • We recommend that you review tax implications on Nike and its potential impacts going forward as the effective tax rate was 14.6% for the nine months ended February 28, 2019, compared to 74.4% for the nine months ended February 28, 2018. The decrease in the Company's effective tax rate was driven by one-time charges in fiscal 2018 related to the enactment of the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (the "Tax Act").

    MD&A Recap

    • Good growth across all key categories, led by sportswear, running and Jordan Brand. Increase in ASP per unit was primarily a result of higher full-price and NIKE direct ASPs (average sale prices).
    • Pressure on margin due to higher product costs, unfavorable changes in net foreign currency exchange rates, higher advertising and marketing expenses, wage, and presentation costs.
    • A noticeable decline in NIKE basketball category and apparel in North America but partially offset by apparel revenues which increased 7%.
    • EM&A is seeing very strong growth in digital commerce sales and new stores, comparable store sales growth 13%. Primary contributors are sportswear, football, and Jordan.
    • Nike is seeing high double-digit growth in Korea and Japan. For the first 9 months, increased by 19% and 17%.
    • Heavy investment into data and analytics capabilities and digital commerce platforms and new enterprise resource planning tool.
    • Trouble area - Converse. We recommend review Converse growth assumptions and readjust model to better account the slowdown.

how much cash/stocks are you right now?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 02:18 PM PDT

putting aside real estate or any non liquid investment, how much are you in stocks verse cash? I've been bouncing between 70-80% cash for 6months now - I missed a good portion of the drop in Dec because of it, but also missed out on a good portion of the come back since.

I'm hoarding my cash in anticipation of some large bargains to be head in the future, but timing is impossible as we all know.

    Brokers for expats?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 06:30 PM PDT

Hi, Im a UK citizen living in Singapore, as im not paying tax in the UK im not classed as a UK resident therefore brokers wont allow me to deposit money into trading accounts, ISA's, SIPP's, etc.

I was wondering if you guys can recommend a broker that accepts international customers?

I was taking a look at Internaxx(Luxemburg), i believe they would accept me but i heard their fee's were quite high... But im guessing anywhere that accepts international investors are going to have high fee's.

I really don't know how long im going to work in Singapore for, If i went down the route of opening a trading account in Singapore then id probably have to close it down and transfer everything when i leave...

I also have an account with Etoro but im not sure i feel comfortable investing 10,s of thousands of pounds with them....

I want to invest on UK and USA markets for long term retirement planning. Im 31 now and have over £100,000 that im not sure the best way to invest given my situation.

    Thanks for any advice.

Warren Buffett: Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:49 PM PDT

    https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/012116/warren-buffett-be-fearful-when-others-are-greedy.asp

Warren Buffett once said that as an investor, it is wise to be "Fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." This statement is somewhat of a contrarian view on stock markets and relates directly to the price of an asset: when others are greedy, prices typically boil over, and one should be cautious lest they overpay for an asset that subsequently leads to anemic returns. When others are fearful, it may present a good value buying opportunity.

Stock Portfolio tracking tools comparison? Sheets/Excel/custom viz?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:13 PM PDT

what stock / portfolio tracking tools you prefer?

I"m just starting investing--- well versed in excel/Google Sheets/power bi/sql server/R scripts/tableau.... so I can use analytics comfortably.... (I work in IT)... but i'm not sure what people ACTUALLY use on a daily basis to track portfolios. back when I was in college 10 years ago... we just used excel ... I know it used to connect to yahoo finance but that went out the door... now I know I can connect to google finance.. but then do people just prefer using google sheets?

what's the tool that's going to have the most widespread support?

4/5/2019 Two Harbors Investment (REIT) 10-K Recap

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 05:54 AM PDT

Two Harbors Investment, a real estate investment trust, filed its latest 10-KA filings for 2018 on 4/4/2019. Below is a quick recap on things we felt essential to review.

    MD&A Recap

    • TWO Harbor's management team highlighted their expectations in more graduate home price increases, albeit at a slower rate, better than expected market conditions, and Fed ceases raising rates.
    • Key highlights include completion of the acquisition of CYS, which help increased its market cap and improved its liquidity.
    • Shift in strategic allocation, moving capital from Agency RMBS into MRS and non-Agency securities. Agency Residential mortgage-backed security is considered less risky. This move tells us that TWO is seeing better investment opportunities and perhaps inefficiency in mortgage-related securities offered via non-agency.
    • Note the increases in float income was directly related to increases in the size of MSR and higher earning rates.
    • Due to the acquisition of CYS, the management agreement was amended to (i) reduce management fee (ii) $17.5 million to CYS for a one-time downward adjustment of Pine River's management fees

    Risk Factors Recap

    • CYS may not qualify as a REIT for U.S. federal income tax purposes and could cause adverse tax consequences.
    • Dodd-Frank Act has rolled back critical provisions in 2018, easing mortgage regulations on the small and medium size.
    • Added verbiage on FED and its further reduction in reinvestment or outright sales of its securities portfolio and its actions' effects such as causing agency RMBS price to decline further and increase market volatility.
    • Added verbiage on the nature of MRS and its illiquid nature in economic downturn and dependence on the external valuation of the MSR collateral.

What are the Asian equivalents of IWDA and SWDA?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2019 11:32 AM PDT

    Hello

I invested quite some money in SWDA, because it invests its money across a variety of sectors and has been doing very well the past 5 years, ie a steady constant growth. The geographical diversification could be a bit better imo, but afaik that's considered a safe investment (assuming 100% safe investments is a thing...).
