- Can we stop putting people on a pedestal for living at home and paying off loans? Not everyone wants to live at home, can live at “home” or maybe they’re married and have their own place. Everyone’s situation is different and we all can pay off our loans in any situation. Prioritizing is the key.

IBR Student Loan Recertification - Newly Married Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:12 PM PDT Hi all, My wife and I just got married on 3/15/19 and it's now time for her annual IBR recertification for REPAYE. The recertification application ask if she is married and she answered yes. They are now asking me (husband) for income verification and to co-sign the loan. My wife is working towards PSLF so we wanted to try and pay the lowest payment possible while she was in residency. I was wondering if the payment calculation is based on the latest tax return (tax year 2018)? Since we did not get married til 2019, would that mean the payment would be based soley on my wife's income since we had both filed Single in 2018. Or is the calculation based on the most current information regarding the party's current household which means the payment calculation will be based off both our incomes since we are now married. Short profile for both of us: Wife: Medical Resident $56k/year Total Federal Loan: $507k Currently under REPAYE Filed Single for Tax Year 2018 Working towards PSLF Currently in a 4 year program at a qualifying institution Husband: Salary: $70k/year Filed Single for Tax year 2018 Total Loans: $0.00 Any advice on our situation would be great! Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:58 PM PDT I paid off $171K earlier this month, and did some shopping and had a few dinners outside with my spouse. Now I feel incredibly guilty. The debt payoff milestone had kept me in check for so many years of my life, but now that it's gone I am ready to focus on building 6 months of emergency expenses. Do others have any similar experiences and how did you learn from that and reign yourself in ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:29 PM PDT I am strongly considering refinancing my parent's Parent PLUS (federal) loans into my name with First Republic. I have already spoken to someone from there on the phone and am working on an application for a loan with a 5 year term and 2.2% interest rate. I had a question arise while filling out the application. I emailed my representative already, but am hoping I could get a quicker answer here. Is it possible to refinance $40k and have a little principal left over on one of the loans or do I need to cover an entire loan when refinancing? I am considering refinancing the $24k and $19k loan, but would prefer to only take out a $40k loan with First Republic and leave a few thousand on the $19k loan if possible. Current Parent PLUS Loans: $37,132.65 at 6.16% $24,291.81 at 6.96% $49.52 at 6.96% $21,037.63 at 6.59% $19,581.52 at 6.59% (Total $102,093.13) [link] [comments] |
How do schools look at parent income if the parents don't file taxes? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:46 AM PDT My niece is going to be going to college in the next couple of years. Neither of her parents make much and neither files taxes because they both have sizable student loan debts in default. Both work in jobs where they are paid under the table in cash. Neither, as far as I can tell, even has a bank account. She lives with her aunt, and her aunt claims her on her taxes. Aunt makes somewhere under the federal poverty level, but provides for her. How does that work out? She can put down what her parents make, and represent that she has no support from them. Should she list her aunt instead, since that's the household she's a part of? If she lists her aunt, is she going to be dinged for her parents not filing taxes? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:33 PM PDT Hey, everyone! I'm graduating from grad school in May. I took out federal loans & one private loan for undergrad. I took a year off to work before starting grad school. I used up the grace period on my undergrad loans before starting my graduate program. I haven't made any payments on my undergrad loans since I began graduate school. I took out federal loans for graduate school. When I graduate, will I have a grace period for my undergrad loans as well as my graduate loans? If anyone could provide insight I'd be grateful! Thanks in advance. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:30 PM PDT Hi , I submitted my IDR Recertification well before deadline in studentloans.gov when they sent me the correspondence it's time to do so , at that time Fedloans acknowledged the receipt and then later sent a follow up email that they put my recertification on hold to be processed after my last bill in my current schedule closes. Now in a few days , my last billing schedule will close and they should process it , the deadline is also past as of a few days ago , and now when I call the automatic phone system says I missed my recertification date, this is while they have my request on hold to be processed after my last bill closes. What should I do ? I'm scared as hell. Anybody else experienced that ? Have they messed it up ? Is the phone system faulty? Should I ignore it as I have done everything correctly and have the proof and just need to wait ? But why do they say I missed while they have my recertification on hold ? Thanks [link] [comments] |
