Had an interview with the IRS, this is how it went.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:27 AM PDT

I had an interview in the south central part of the country. It was one of the worst interview experiences I've ever had. Not because it was difficult, but because it basically was not an interview. I walked into the IRS building, went through security, and sat and waited. I was brought to a room with three people sitting in it. Not a single one of them introduced themselves, not a single one gave me the tiniest bit of background, and they LITERALLY started reading from a script word for word. They asked me questions from a script word for word. It was like I was interviewing with three robots. They wrote down my answers and asked me a total of 6 questions. Then, that was it. I was not really afforded an opportunity to ask questions and when I tried to they acted very strangely about it, as if it was out of the ordinary to ask questions in an interview. It was a pretty disappointing experience overall.

Is this normal practice at the close of an internship?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 08:42 PM PDT

The other day I got an email from HR for an exit meeting of my internship with a regional firm. However, in the email they mentioned that I'd have to hand over my personal cell phone to IT so they can monitor / scan it for firm related information. I have never called, texted, emailed or anything relate to work on my phone. Are they allowed to do this?

Is this normal for employers to do at the end of an internship? It kind of makes me uncomfortable that IT people would be on my phone where I have a lot of personal information.

To masters or not to masters

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:45 PM PDT

Long story short I have been working 2+ years in tax at B4, but I started working before I got my 150 (i need 12 more credits). Now, I am at a crossroads: I can easily get these credits over the summer by taking BS classes online from my UG school, but I was also accepted into a MAcc (non-tax) at a big 10 school that will allow me to take classes part time. Should I just knock out the credits over the summer or do the masters, probably over 2 years?

I've already taken the exam (need 150 for license in my home state (FL), but not to sit. After getting the 150 I will transfer my license from FL to the state where I work.

Has anyone ever been placed in an "Acting Senior" role but successfully pushed back and got something out of it besides increased responsibilities?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:07 PM PDT

Essentially wondering if anyone was successful in asking for an early promotion or a higher salary or something like that, rather than just taking on the increased responsibility. Being acting senior just seems like being shit on 2x as much as just being an associate.

I need advice for my career.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:43 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am currently a bookkeeper 2+ years at small church in my town, and accounting clerk (A/R only, and data stuff) for large company. I want to move myself into Staff Accountant position for some better companies. I have associates in Computer Information Systems. I can't afford more student loans, and I don't have much money to afford myself to get degree in bachelors in accounting. I been learning quick books and self teaching myself about accounting.

What is your advice? I not shooting to be controller, cpa, or big4. I am just l just trying to be a accountant/bookkeeper with hopes to make enough for my family to live a nice middle class life.

    [CAN] Question Regarding Career Path

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 08:28 PM PDT

    Hey there,

So I am currently in the last semester of my degree and I've recently been speaking to one of my professors with many years of experience and he's told me that he thinks that I would be very good in the role of a trustee in bankruptcy. I though this was a bit odd, but something that I had never considered. I will be starting with KPMG and he said that in combination with a CPA that a trustee designation is very useful.

What does this career path generally look like and what is the outlook like? The obvious argument was that it is fairly safe as in bad times they still do fairly well. He; however, said that creativity was an asset and that is why he thought I would do well.

    Thanks!

TL;DR: prof told me I should look into being a trustee in bankruptcy after completing my CPA. What does this path look like and how viable is it?

Have a kind of abnormal education plan, I'm not sure what to do job-wise

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:28 PM PDT

So, I'm a fourth-year student. Last May, my plan was to graduate with a BS in Econ and minor in CS. However, I wasn't too sure what I would do career-wise, took financial accounting last semester, and now I decided to pick up Accounting. I'll graduate next May, with a BS in Econ & Accounting, minor in CS, and 150 credits (however I'll have to take Auditing during the summer). My GPA is 3.3. The only job experience I have is basic bookkeeping duties when I was freshman, as well as a research assistant for my economics professor.

My question is, should I apply for internships for next summer? Or just have a regular part-time job, then apply for entry-level jobs after I graduate? I'm honestly pretty clueless about the usual process. I live in a small city, with few accounting firms. However, I'll be living within short commuting distance of NYC after I graduate.

Any advice is appreciated! I've been pretty lost about this.

    ‘Acting Senior’

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:04 AM PDT

What's the deal with this role? Was pulled aside yesterday by a manager and told that I'm exceeding the other first year associates by a considerable amount and that I will 'have the opportunity' to step into a larger role with the firm and 'be a uniquely valuable team member' as we expect to lose a couple seniors after this busy season. Is this a good thing or is the firm essentially going to try and take me for a sucker and bend me over? Should the time come do I have a play to ask for better compensation?

I'm at a regional firm fwiw, about 100 employees, about 10 first years.

Need opinions on which course would be beneficial

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:23 PM PDT

I have 147 units and having trouble deciding on which course to take to reach 150. I can take a random easy 3 unit but...why shouldn't I learn something more applicable to the field?

I have narrowed down to 3 options

    1. Business bookkeeping
    2. Excel for accounting
    3. Quickbooks

I don't have prior work experience but I plan to work for small or mid size firm in the future.

Any idea which courses would be most beneficial for me or which skill is most sought by prospective employers?

What are the key things recruiters are looking for in phone interviews?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 12:14 PM PDT

I am having a hard time getting through phone interviews. I tend to perform much better in person due to seeing the interviews behavior or via skype interview. My phone interviews tend to only last 15-30 minutes at the most.
