    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:51 PM PDT

Hi all! Just wanted to hear some personal accounts of people leaving their first accounting job.

    Points of interest:

    • What kind of job were you leaving
    • How long did you stay before leaving
    • Reason behind leaving
    • Where you were leaving to
    • How the conversation went
    • Overall experience and advice

    Thanks everyone!

Would a cat survive busy season?

I want to get a cat. I also plan on working in the big four. Would my cat be OK or would it be best not to get a cat?

    Subtle art of looking busy

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 11:20 AM PDT

Hey all. I started about 4 months ago. And I love my job but it is kinda slow and I dont know what to do. How do you look busy when actually not doing jack shit. I love it during the busy season and weeks but when it slows down how can I look busy while not being too noticeable.

Gridlines on or off in excel

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 10:18 AM PDT

This question has been flying around my office this morning, do you like gridlines on or off in your excel spreadsheets? Apparently I'm the weirdo for having no gridlines on any of my excel docs. IMO if you're trying to present data, gridlines are an absolute killer for visual clarity. If I need borders to highlight specific cells or a region then sure add it to just the data you need it for, but gridlines on the entire sheet are an absolute no go. I think all of my co workers are serial killers for leaving them on and they think the same of me for leaving them off.

    Let's discuss

Best basic calculator with clicky/responsive buttons?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:36 PM PDT

Hello! I'm in need of a basic calculator for my accounting classes but I can't seem to find one with decent buttons. All of the calculators I have seen have really mushy buttons which slow me down a lot during exams. I have used an HP 12C financial calculator and I LOVE the feel of those buttons but I just need something basic. Preferably not too large and under $30 but open to any suggestions.

    Thanks!

What's the craziest thing you've seen someone do with a company credit card?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 12:53 PM PDT

Just saw this story about an accountant in Toronto who bought $6 million worth of iPhones and iPads with a corporate credit card and it got me wondering: What's the weirdest/craziest thing you've seen someone use a company-issued credit card for?

I would like some tips on studying for the cpa exam.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:49 PM PDT

So far, I've been told to get a book. Obv,this works, but I would like to know any other ways to study this if it can be completed quicker. If I were to use books, which book should I purchase? Any tips regarding this is greatly appreciated. Ultimately, I would love to finish it all this summer.

Do non-accounting people know who the B4 are?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:32 PM PDT

I realize no one on this thread is a non-accounting person, but I'm just curious what your experiences have been with this. For example, I have an interview with EY/office visit coming up which to me is a HUGE deal but I say that name to my friends and family and it's like I could have said freaking burger king and there would have been no difference in their response. Like cool a job interview is great... and I'm over hear freaking out like BUT THE PRESTIGE and no one understands. Even more so for the top 10 firms.

I guess I just want recognition?? lol any one have thoughts or personal anecdotes relating to this?

Are CPAs liable to third parties?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:36 PM PDT

It's a short answer on my test tomorrow. I keep reading conflicting things. My textbook says under the restatement rule that a CPA is liable to the third party for negligence, but online I keep reading CPAs are only liable for fraud , and not negligence.
