Is it harder to get a job in public accounting if you graduate at the end of a fall semester as opposed to at the end of a spring semester?

Who here actually reads the Journal of Accountancy?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 02:01 PM PDT

Student here, and I keep hearing people say you should read the Journal of Accountancy. I'm curious, is it really that popular? Y'all read it? Would it help out in learning all this stuff, studying for the CPA and all that?

What are some examples of "Accounting Jobs" (jobs that prize Accounting designations such as "CPA", "CIA" and etc) that dont require as much if not any actual "accounting".

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:19 PM PDT

I would really love an "accounting job" that demands frequent moving/walking around and lot's of face-to-face communication, rather than sitting at a desk and staring at a computer for most of the day. I hear some Internal Audit Positions are like this?

Accounting graduate student in need of some help...

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 08:28 PM PDT

Hey r/accounting, I need your help. I'm a doctoral student in accounting working on my thesis, and I need some examples of situations in which pre-tax income could increase without a corresponding increase in after-tax income. I've been out of practice for a long time, so I'm having a hard time coming with examples for situations in which EBT would increase but after-tax net income would either stay the same, or would decrease. The only thing I've managed to come up with would be some valuation allowance shenanigans.

Could any of you think of any other examples? Have you seen anything like this in practice? Help me r/accounting, you're my only hope!

    KPMG Background check!!

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 08:26 PM PDT

    Hello all,

So i got an exciting offer from KPMG Canada. Now they will be performing background check. I am just wondering what kind of background check they will perform?

i am clean from credit or criminal record perspective. i only lied on my resume to hide some very short term jobs where i dint like the culture and left. those short stints look bad on resume so i decided to skip it. I talked to my previous employer (We have great relations) and they are willing to cover that period and verify.

Do KPMG background check employement check through government agency or something? or they just call the previous employer?

    “Exit interview” tomorrow, need advice

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:06 PM PDT

So I have my "exit interview" tomorrow for my tax internship at a mid size firm. The internship went really well and I feel like I hit it off with everyone, so I'm definitely expecting a full time offer somewhere down the road. The thing is, I know for a fact that I never want to do tax again. I'm much more interested in TAS or audit (not sure if they would let a campus recruit start in TAS). I already mentioned in my "exit survey" that I would like to pursue a different service line, but didn't go into specifics as I wanted to talk about it during the interview tomorrow. When I get asked about this, what is the best way to persuasively get my point across and have a good shot at switching service lines? I feel like I was definitley a top performer out of my intern class, and everyone really liked me. Also, I have a big 4 offer lined up for this summer, so I plan to disclose this as well. Do you think they would allow me to defer my full-time offer decision til after the summer, AND let me switch service lines?

Accounting for unpaid sales tax and subsequent payment?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 08:09 PM PDT

Background: Due to law changes, an internet based retailer that never collected sales tax must now collect & remit sales tax on all sales in a certain state

12/31/17 - Company estimates sales tax payable for past 5 years is $50m plus interest & penalties

3/15/18 - State announces program where companies can volunteer to collect sales tax on a prospective basis will only have to pay 50% of unpaid sales tax and no interest & penalties

6/15/18 - Company participated in program and pays state $25m to settle obligation

I'm asked for the accounting treatment for each of these events, and I'll be honest that I'm lost. How do you account for a sales tax liability that was never collected off sales...? And how do you offset/reduce that liability once it's created...?

    Help me please I'm dying

How to Increase Earnings in Industry

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 08:59 AM PDT

I went straight into industry after college at an F500 company (no public accounting experience). I've been at this company for almost two years now and I'm only making $46.5K after a measly 3% annual performance raise as a staff accountant. I have enough credits for the CPA and I've been studying for FAR for the last couple of months. In all honesty, I'm hoping to hit six figures by the time I'm 30, but where I'm at seems kind of dead-end. You could get promoted to a level "two," but that only comes with a couple extra thousand each year. Some of my co-workers have been in the same staff accountant position for 5 to 10 years! How can I leverage my F500 experience and CPA (provided I pass within the next year) to increase my salary? Try to climb the ladder in my current position or jump ship?
