How much of your average day is spent "working"?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 07:18 PM PDT

I'm looking at industry jobs in particular and I'm trying to get a feel of what is considered average. I don't want to jump from public and be stuck with shitty hours still.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 12:39 AM PDT

I do individual tax in financial services group of big 4 in nyc and i am done, i have to get out. DONE. Likely a family office or wealth management firm next fuck the public accounting pyramid scheme grind. i should be able to leave to a position and working way less .... the time is right to jump the fuck out of big4

I just flubbed a thank you email .... please slap me .... with a chair..... to the head ..... and preferably hard enough for me to forget the last 4 months of my life - thanks

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 09:59 PM PDT

Sorry .... I just wanted to whine, vent and mope now. Nothing interesting here, more whining to follow (consider yourself warned).

So I managed to get an in person interview with one of the big 4 (my grades aren't exactly the best nor do I goto a "top" school so this was a big deal for me) and I thought it went relatively well.... or at least... I hope the interviewer thinks so too. So after the interview I return to work for quarter end (currently interning in Industry), go home dead tired and then proceed to make 2 typos in a thank you email. I can't remember the last time I wanted to kill myself so badly..... well it's been a few days since then and I've calmed down to merely slapping myself periodically..... oh well. Lessons learned I guess.... I just hope the interview went well enough for the manager to overlook the missing prepositions in my thank you email.

Thanks for putting up with my rambling. I'll just go back to sulking in a corner now.

What is the Journal Entry for recording an investment?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 08:35 PM PDT

I am assuming it is recorded in the equity section and should look something like this:

Debit: Cash 100 Credit: Common stock 100

Is my coworker dumb as a brick or is he really incompetent?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 04:20 PM PDT

Work for a mid-size publicly traded company for about 8 months that has a small office. There's about 10 of us on the team.

We hired a guy for a Financial Analyst role less than 6 months ago who is new to the country. I was immediately skeptical they made a desperation hire because we were very short staffed at the time -- we were down a couple of mid-level bodies and I was effectively doing the work of a few people with help from corporate. Anyway, the guy's background is he immigrated from the Middle East, BComm from his home country, CFA from 2016, and did 10 years at a well known multi-national in various Managerial roles.

I've tried cutting him some slack where he is new, but he has been doing/not understanding things that I feel a CFA should know. Examples of things he has done:

    • He came to me asking about an entry being done in the Prepaids account looking for some details. I asked him if he checked the prepaid reconciliation and he said no. If he did, he would have found the answer in 5 minutes.

    • He asks a lot of times if an entry has been posted or not -- he hasn't bothered to check any of the GL batch lists in Sage.

    • Just today, he came to my desk asking me if I was actioning a couple of reclass requests -- when it clearly states in the email that somebody else is looking into it. On top of that, he will repeatedly ask for information when I have already sent that to him earlier.

    • Today, he asked me to reclass a certain amount that came from another department. If he read the email from another department, it would note that it was a reversal from an accrual in the prior month. It seemed like to me he didn't know what an accrual was...

I know we are very busy and it is easy to make mistakes when there is so much on our plates, but I feel very frustrated when I am trying to get my work done and I can't because I am constantly interrupted by this guy -- especially over stupid shit that if he took 5 minutes to read the email or look things up, it would have been dealt with.

I am gonna admit: We are technically the same level as each other but I found out he gets paid way more than I do, so my judgement could be clouded by that. My new manager has been talking of changing my title and I plan to ask for a raise when that happens...doing my best to bide my time until it happens...

What do you think? Am I being too hard on the guy because I'm pissed he gets paid way more than me? Or do I have a legit beef? If I do, what should I do? I have been thinking on bringing this up on my boss, but worried that opens me up to issues...

Why do so many people join the Big 4 when they know it's utterly miserable?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 03:47 PM PDT

You always hear that joining the Big 4 is basically selling your soul, so why make that commitment? Do the pros really outweigh the cons?

    Bad career move?

Would switching from Financial Analyst II to a Senior Accountant after a year be seen as a step backwards?

I don't feel challenged at all in my current position. The title of financial analyst versus what the actual job duties entail do not match. I saw an opening for a senior accountant in a different department and thought I might apply.
