9 years of my own business. Can I go back to a regular job?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 08:22 PM PDT

My business has been doing poor for the last few years at no one's fault but my own. I've lost interest and have been exploring what might come next. A job that I thought I could do well came up and I applied. About to have the second interview but now getting anxious. Not sure if I can actually work for someone else anymore.

Anybody have experience with a drone photography business?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:11 PM PDT

I was thinking about different side businesses I can try while working full time, and I realized something - I have a nice drone. I was wondering if anyone can share their experience with doing professional drone photography and videography.

It seems like there are a lot of markets for this. From real estate agents, to events, to inspections and engineering. I'm guessing that there would be some editing involved, depending on the situation. But that's something I can learn.

From what I can gather, there are a couple of services in my area that do this. But I feel like the market still has a lot of growth to do.

    Thoughts?

What accounting program is best for my business?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT

Hello, I am just starting a small flight school business, and I currently use WaveApps for my accounting. I am trying out Quickbooks, but both of these do not work well for me. My business is a single member LLC out of Texas.

I am asking if any of you know of an efficient and affordable accounting program which would work best for me. My needs and wants in an accounting program are below.

(Also, I have a program I wrote to handle things for my business such as journal entries, customer deposits, payments to advertisers who refer customers to me, depreciation of aircraft, and import, parse, and analyze transactions and training logs from my scheduling system)

What I NEED in an accounting program:

    • Journal Entries
    • API (A way for my program to connect to my accounting service to post journal entries)
      • Quickbooks has an API, but if I make an APP, it has to work and be available to everyone
    • Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and other normal accounting reports
    • Reconciliation
    • Multi-user
    • Import from Banks and Credit Cards (either via a file import or automatically)
    • Export
    • Payroll (I don't need it yet, but eventually)

What I would like my accounting program to also include:

    • 1099 Tax forms (if it doesn't I will add a feature to my program to generate such forms)
    • Calculate and fill out 1040-ES for quarterly taxes
    • Invoices
    • Bank rules (to automatically assign transactions to an account)
      • If not available, I will do so with my program integration
    • Recurring Journal Entries (if not, I'll use my program)

Business reviews gone side ways! need some advice

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 04:06 PM PDT

    Hey,

    tdlr at bottom

I don't post much but hoping to get feedback.

It all started when i did a job for a guy who did youtube videos on my work. It ended up being the worst portrayed videos possible and i can only assume it was for the "views". I don't blame the guy, it was all click bait titles and put himself in the spotlight for being the best customer and myself doing shotty work.

I put in requests to youtube for a complaint to blur and hide my identity, I was not happy with these videos. After he got the complaints i won't quote his text word for word but it forced him hand to publicly post my personal FB and Business page to his fb friends and followers and got 30 x 0 star reviews in the span of a week, along with hurtful comments and a bit of depression.

What i have done so far.

FB- I have removed reviews off my fb, tried putting in support requests to clear the trouble caused as I have quoted FB policy and still no help.

Google- Contacted google a handful of times but to no avail will they help with the spammed reviews. Even some of the reviews are very inappropriate but google will not use common judgement to remove even the inappropriate ones. Its clear as day 20+ reviews in one day of the same stuff. Quote for quote by multiple google employees over the phone "we have reviewed the reviews and they do not qualify for removal.

Since reached out to boat load of customers to provide feedback to counter the negative rating which is helping! :)

I wanted to reach out to you guys in what i could do next, i have screen shots of everything can provide the admins with links to pics, showing myself working on the job after the "bad work" of pictures where i would have finished the job properly etc.

tdlr: Did a job and youtube channel showed it being shit work, got destroyed with bad reviews and now trying to fix the 30+ bad reviews he had his followers do.

What are my options for starting a small business for my band?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 07:18 AM PDT

I've been in a band for several years and historically we've gotten gigs at bars, been paid in drink chips, occasionally a few hundred dollars in cash, nothing major. When we want something like new equipment or studio time to record we put cash from shows in an envelope instead of splitting it and save up. It was just for fun for several years, but it's been gradually getting to be a bigger deal.

My band has achieved a level of mild regional success lately, we pull in at least $1000 for a show and we average around two shows per month. We are playing places that are a lot more legitimate who want to cut us a check. Now we are in a weird situation where we have to have one member of the band's name on the check, they deposit it in their account and then we divide up the money. Nobody wants $24K coming in and going out of their bank account for obvious tax reasons.

Now that this band thing has blown up into an actual money making enterprise we want to somehow turn it into a legitimate business; we want the venues to be able to cut the check to the band, deposit it in a band bank account, pay cuts to the members in a way that we can claim on our taxes, and somehow use band funds to pay for and 'write off' band expenses like new equipment.

none of us have any idea where to even begin with this.

Has anyone used crowdfunding to start their business? What are your thoughts?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 01:50 PM PDT

I've slowly been working towards starting a small batch bath and body line. I have an LLC, FEIN, state tax ID, prototypes and a business account that I used my own funds to pay for. I have drafted a lean business plan and have a majority of my start up costs outlined (Insurance, web store, booth costs and production materials).

That said, the contract I am working on is about to be cut which we leave me without a full time job. I feel this is that 'now or never' time.

I have been thinking about launching through crowdfunding, but I was hoping to get some honest feedback. It looks like it could be a popularity contest of who you know in order to get funds. If you went this route how successful was the campaign, how long did it take to hit your goal and is it something you would recommend?

TL;DR: If you used crowdfunding to kick start your business, would you recommend it?

How to factor Operational Costs into Quotes?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 03:26 AM PDT

I co-own a cleaning company and i'm trying to improve the accuracy of my quotes. Lets imagine that i have 1000€ per month of expenses in operational costs. Divide per 21 (average days of work this year where i live) and that per 8 (working hours per day). The outcome is 5.95€ per hour. Is this a good way to calculate it? Should i add it to the hourly price? What do you think? Thanks!

Better to sublease or transfer or sell?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 02:11 AM PDT

Trying to decide whether I want to sell my business. I can't make ends meet rn but still have two years left on my lease. Should I renew the lease and try to sell since that would keep it below market or should I just sublease the last year or last 6 months and let them buy at a reduced price and negotiate their own terms, which would probably be comparable to what I'm paying.

    UK VAT reclaiming

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 09:31 PM PDT

I have a business in the media industry, and we are aiming to do our first invoices towards the end of this new financial year. I've been spending for 3 or 4 years in setup (such is the media business). Can I reclaim VAT even if I'm not invoicing anything with VAT on at this stage? I'm aiming to do a 4 year trawl to review all purchased and do a vat reclaim, if I register for VAT right now. Any thoughts?

    Work from home employees

    Vendor Registration BS

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 11:25 AM PDT

Any other small businesses that sell to governments or large companies been finding the various invoicing and registration hoops they make you go through are becoming more common and onerous?

We always get paid but they make it as hard as possible it seems with some even making us pay for 3rd party invoicing or compliance systems.

Anyone have some strategies to combat it? I've thought about putting a surcharge on quotes or just quoting above retail price.

    Need help with inventory system/organization

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:57 PM PDT

Hi all! I work for a local artisan coffee shop that's pretty successful. It's only a handful of employees and the owner himself, and we've come across an issue. Maybe not an issue, but an area with room for improvement.

We provide waffles, baked goods, and a few flavored lattes, all of which are made in-house from scratch by some of the employees themselves. This means we have a lot of things we need to keep in the back like ingredients, but that's where the room for improvement comes in. At this point in time, we have no secure, manageable inventory system. We rely on the employees to enter things they need into Wunderlist when they're low, but that system falls through when employees forget to do that! There are a lot of things to keep track of, and even I'll forget to add eggs occasionally, or strawberries. And that usually results in a momentary tragedy when we need those things ASAP.

The question is whether or not any of you have had experience in a similar situation, and what were some things you learned, cheap or effective alternatives, pointers, etc. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Hopefully this questions not to industry specific, has anyone used ATI (Automotive Training Instuit) ?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:29 PM PDT

    Hello all-

I'm the owner of a fairly well (15 years) established automotive repair business. Our sales are 1.6M, we're holding on to about $.18 out of every $1.00 we make. High Industry standard is abot $.35...

I struggle with most of the issues a tech turned business owner does, cash flow, long term planning, goals.

Recently I've gone to a class from ATI that offers education for my lack of knowledge with the planning/cash flow struggles I have.. But it's expensive, four years at $1500 per month. For that you get unlimited training, a business coach and some industry specific business tools.

I suppose the question is if anyone's familiar with ATI of has had direct experience with them.

    Thank you!

I'm currently playing with a free trial of Monday.com but it feels like it's geared towards people who're at least somewhat experienced in managing the process.

I'm a total novice, and I'm hoping to find some software which will help me get shit done!

Some business and marketing tools i have found helpful.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 05:42 AM PDT

    Litmus, Indico, Albert for marketing

For testing and tracking emails, Litmus is the best chosen option for marketers. You can test up to 40 clients with mere click. The ESP tracking report has tracking feature which goes along each email sent. The tracking pixel extracts subscribers' data such as how and when they opened an email.

The tool also tells time calculation i.e. number of minutes /hours reader spent reading an email. Also, if the email was forwarded organically. Comes with a free trial of 7 days.

Indico is a machine learning tool for images and text analyzation. They name it 'intelligent process automation for unstructured content'. Manual document based workflows are often hectic and companies are moving towards automated workflows. Indico improves the efficiency of the company, hence the ROI.

Broomtrain is a data analyzer which uses predictive intelligence (part of machine learning) and omni channel automation for marketing.

Albert is for automated and autonomous targeting, media buying, data optimization, channels distribution and user analytics. Set automation for all your marketing campaigns.

X.ai, Conversica, for Sales and Business

Tamr, and Texico are also used in business but let us explore some of more tools such as X.ai and Conversica.

Conversica is designed in a way that it connects gross sales leads. More like a virtual sales assistant. So how come it helps in sales? Conversica keeps the focus of sales reps on closing leads and selling. Rather than chasing the sales leads and prospects. Leads are connected for more than once and whatever the time set by sales team. Responses are automated and 2-way email conversation is possible.

X.ai is another useful tool for business. It is a smart assistant app for scheduling meetings and streamlining the meeting requests. As the user receives an email for meeting, X.ai works like a user and sets the time. You will receive an email of meeting, and you can just update the status as 'busy' or available'.

Idea for protein drink service that accommodates all types of protein drinkers (dieting moms to gym rats) while minimizing/eliminating the costs associated with traditional food service. Come lend me your thoughts please...

    Posted: 17 Apr 2019 04:58 PM PDT

I'm a bit of a foodie and I've recently figured out some great recipes for hand-made protein drinks that are unique flavors, almost no sugar, and are suitable and appealing to whatever demographic you fall in that enjoys protein drinks. Meal replacement for your dieting aunt, all the way thru body building gym bros. The major costs associated with most food/beverage joints are related to overhead and afew other things (payroll, utilities, rent,etc.).

I thought about creating a service for my city that was on the basis of delivery. I currently have access to a health dept certified restaurant that would act as my base of operations and have done my research to follow health standards and law. Simply put, I would take orders in advance from my menu (which is very affordable and unique) so that i could deliver to you your protein drinks for the week, on a weekly basis. I could do it all myself (no employees, utilities, rent) and would be targeting the giant apartment complexes in the area, which house my target demo in 18-35 year olds, and also the affluent neighborhoods, which house my "health moms/dads".

The idea is to target these places bc lots of people live close together, therefore minimizing delivery time between clients and being able to service a large population, while almost eliminating the expenses of a traditional shop/restaurant. I just make batches, bottle them, and deliver them once a week. I realize that this is all about the marketing, and i have a good plan in place to appeal to both moms and Arnolds and most in between.

So what am i missing? Is there any glaring holes in this idea? This idea is particular for my city and may not be great everywhere, but i think theres something to it. I have several ideas that are specific that don't fit with my city but may for yours. Let me know what you think of mine, and maybe I can help you figure out one for you. Thanks
