Feel free to talk about technical analysis here; post your arguments here and not in the current post.

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

I'm an astrophysicist and I perform my own (simple) stock analyses based on kinematic principles: comments welcome! (March 25, 2019)

    Posted: 25 Mar 2019 06:20 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I've been out for a few days performing a lot of work on backtesting my strategy. I have some new things to share with you, so follow along, or see the past threads with the most discussion here for a recap: https://www.reddit.com/r/stocks/comments/b23jpd/im_an_astrophysicist_and_i_perform_my_own_simple/ https://www.reddit.com/r/stocks/comments/b1grpq/im_an_astrophysicist_read_datascientist_and_i/If you're into blindly following predictions, skip to the very end for the list !

Quick Explanation: this approach is based on kinematic principles, which is the branch of physics and mathematics describing the motions of objects without necessarily understanding the underlying forces at play. My script runs a loop from 65 to 10 days, and for each period computes the SMA and its first three derivatives, which I then combine via a weighted average with the weights set by the inverse of each SMA period. The first derivative is analogous to the stock's "velocity" (in %/day), the 2nd derivative is its "acceleration" (%/day^2), and the third derivative is the "jerk", or change in acceleration (%/day^3). Using these three parameters, I extrapolate the price of each stock on my watchlist 10 days into the future in order to inform my own trading strategy.

Since the last major updates I have been working on backtesting and refining my strategy according to the results. Essentially what I settled on is running every stock on my list for 15 years in the past, predicting the price 10 days out, and comparing against the actual data. I then prioritize by the true positive rate over the false negative rate, times the average size of gains over the average size of loss. The top 25 stocks on my list following this strategy can be seen in the following table:

Adjusted only for alpha*g/l... (TP= true positive rate, and so on... alpha = TP/FN, avg G/l = mean gain / mean loss, glf = number of gain days / number of loss days)

Note that I defined alpha here in an unconventional manner. A traditional alpha (relative to market performance) would be alpha/glf. Essentially this boils down to if you follow this strategy, your gains to losses will be alpha*G/l. If you left your money in the market all the time your gain to loss ratio would be glf*G/l.

So with that in mind, here are the same stocks ordered by glf*G/l:

    Adjusted only for g/l*glf...

The major take away from this: alpha is typically higher than the number of gain to loss days, meaning that we have beat the market on average by following this strategy (a traditional alpha here would be 1.56/1.31=1.19, or 19% better than leaving our money in all the time in the same stocks). I think this is decent, but obviously can be improved. I'd be glad to hear what your ideas and criticism!

Is it safe to buy NIO stock at $5 considering Tesla's top stakeholder Baillie Gifford got in at around $6 in October 2018? I'm thinking of buying some shares on the off chance it might be a significant EV player in the future. What are your thoughts on NIO?

Apple's move into banking raises the bar for fintech, traditional credit cards

    Posted: 26 Mar 2019 10:01 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/26/apples-move-into-banking-raises-the-bar-for-fintech-credit-cards.html

Apple is working with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard to launch a credit card. In typical Apple style, it's changing the way the old guard might think about something as common as swiping a credit card.

Some say the tech giant could pose a threat to fintech companies and regional banks.

"Money is just a form of data, and Apple has been great at managing access to data. They'll take the same approach to money over time," says Ryan Gilbert, general partner at Prospect Ventures.

Was most of it luck? Did you read something that made you want to invest in said stock? When did you sell or are you still holding? When do you plan to sell? What stock were you lucky to stay away from that others didn't see as a bad stock at the time?

Most of my money is in total market index funds but I put aside a small percent to invest in specific stocks.

Retailers want to go cashless. But opponents say that's discriminatory

    Posted: 26 Mar 2019 11:57 AM PDT

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/26/business/cashless-stores-amazon-go-sweetgreen-dos-toros/index.html

New York (CNN Business)Retailers and restaurants say eliminating cash at their stores makes them more efficient. But opponents argue that cashless stores exclude millions of Americans without bank accounts.

Americans use cash in 30% of all transactions, according to a 2017 survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. People dish out cash for most purchases under $10. And cash is also still the most common form of payment for people making less than $25,000 a year.

Now, cities and states are starting to take action against cash-free stores.

What does everyone think of Apple’s new announcements. With the news subscription and Apple card. Also with this new card do you think Visa or MasterCard should be worried?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2019 03:50 PM PDT

From apples website: Receive Daily Cash

Customers will receive a percentage of every Apple Card purchase amount back as Daily Cash. Unlike other cash back rewards, Daily Cash is added to customers' Apple Cash card each day and can be used right away for purchases using Apple Pay, to put toward their Apple Card balance or send to friends and family in Messages. Every time customers use Apple Card with Apple Pay, they will receive 2 percent Daily Cash. Customers will also get 3 percent Daily Cash on all purchases made directly with Apple, including at Apple Stores, on the App Store and for Apple services.

    Edit: VISA stock only**

AMDA Fda approval. My DD what's your input and am I missing something?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2019 10:06 AM PDT

AMDA was issued a CRL in August of 2016.

The CRL did not cite any concerns with the clinical safety and efficacy data for RI-002 submitted by ADMA in the BLA, nor has the FDA requested any additional clinical studies be conducted prior to FDA approval of RI-002 for PIDD.

However, the CRL was issued because:

The FDA identified in the CRL certain outstanding inspection issues and deficiencies at ADMA's third-party contract manufacturers, including its contract drug substance and product manufacturer, its contract fill and finisher and compliance issues with a third-party contract testing laboratory, and requested documentation of corrections for a number of those issues.

In September of 2018 the FDA respected the manufacturer and with an improved status and gave a VAI status. Which in my understanding, means their were some issues, but not in the realm of consequence or action needed from the FDA.

Now ADMA RI-002 is set on April 2nd for FDA approval and I want to buy in. I am not very experienced in the stock market and want to know if receiving a VAI can issue another CRL for RI-002!

    Any input would be appreciated!

    Ladybaybee picks for 2019-03-26

    Posted: 26 Mar 2019 08:57 AM PDT

Link to imgur with daily picks

    Background of my project

    UPDATE:

If you've been following my picks you will realize that the number of suggestions has decreased significantly, only 3 showing up today. This is because I have adjusted the decision engine that powers the system on the backend. I was doing an auditing of a random set of top picks for the past month and I noticed that on average these picks have grown about 0.3% every 3 days. This number is rather disappointing. When I investigated further I noticed that I have very good picks with 15%,6% growth in one week but I also have another set of very soft balls. This is the reason why I am adjusting the engine. Ideally, I would like to only see stocks that will have at least a 0.5% growth per day on average.

Settlement Risk in OTC stocks - can someone explain?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2019 08:25 AM PDT

Just sold some shares of a company that I had purchased some time ago over the OTC pink sheets. It is also listed on the ASX. After I bought them, the shares settled in my account as the ASX shares and I was advised by the broker that I had to call in to sell them.

Just called in and put in a sale for them. The broker informed me that until the trade is settled there is "settlement risk" that the actual shares I sold aren't the ones that were being purchased on the OTC? He couldn't really give me a proper explanation. I am trying to look it up but can't find anything. Is this just a super rare risk that really doesn't happen? Anyone have any experience?
