Possible Solution to Student Loan Payments: Pay Them Off With Pre-Tax Dollars

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 02:31 PM PDT

Found this article and wanted to share it here because I thought it was pretty interesting and this seemed like the appropriate place.

The basic premise is to allow for borrowers to pay off student loans using pre-tax dollars. Interesting argument about how it would help the economy and could help people them off faster.

Does unpaid student loan interest (on older loans) count against the total amount possible to borrow? I'd like to attend college again.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 11:52 PM PDT

I have $47,000 in student loans (unpaid principal). I also have $11,000 in unpaid interest. The total is $58,000. Does the unpaid interest count towards my aggregate loan limit set by the Federal Government for Federal Loans?

I would like to go back to school. But don't know if I can. Thank you for any help.

Wife's defaulted student loan was paid off in 2017 through offset tax returns. In 2018 we received notice from the Department of Education that she still owes the full debt... What can we do?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 06:14 AM PDT

More context: from 2012 through 2017 my wife's tax returns have been offset to pay off this defaulted student loan. Each year we would receive a letter from the Department of Treasury explaining what account the tax return offset program went to pay.

We've moved a few times during those years and have lost all but the most recent letter from the Department of Treasury.

Now the Department of Education is showing that the full student loan debt is still owed but we can't find our proof that the offset program should have paid it off.

Our IRS tax return transcripts show the tax returns going to a non tax debt, but they don't say specifically what non tax debt they were paying.

We tried calling the Department of Education, who directed us to the debt collection agency that is trying to collect the debt. We called the debt collector who directed us to the Department of Treasury. We called the Department of Treasury and they directed us back to the Department of Education.

At this point it's starting to look like we can either pay the debt a second time, which I really don't want to do, or perhaps find an attorney... But this isn't a huge debt, only like 6,000, so I'm concerned an attorney will end up costing as much as the debt. Maybe not, I don't know a lot about attorneys.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything we can do? We've been fighting with different agencies for months and we're at our wits end.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Dependency override questions

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 10:30 PM PDT

Hey all, I have a situation that warrants a dependency override to get student aid. I previously went to school as a homeless student while I was unemployed and couch hopping, but I had to take time off to work and get myself set up for success. Because of my age (21), they want me to be a "dependent" student. This will not work for me, since my mom has been deceased since I was a freshman in high school, and I've been on my own since junior year courtesy of my father's abusive tendencies. The school I'm looking at is willing to give me a fresh start, but said I need a dependency override since I'm not homeless anymore. They told me I need to write a letter plus get three more from people not living with me.

•What should the letters say? •Who are good people to ask to write the letters? •Has anyone successfully obtained an override? a. Do they have to be renewed until I age out of "dependency" b. Is there anything I should be wary of before petitioning for an override?

    Should I refinance?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 08:48 PM PDT

I never even thought about refinancing until today, graduated in 2016.

I have a loan through GreatLakes, 4 technically.

$18,600 left, started at $27,000 and made some overpayments. My monthly is $320 a month. These are the 4 loans and interest rates, guesstimations.

    $30 - 6.8% $6000 - 3.8% $6000 - 4.2% $6000 - 4.8%

All my overpayments went towards the loan with the high interest rate. Anyway, should I continue to pay my $320 a month with these rates? Anyone guess when I'm "supposed" to be paid off by at this cadence?

I started looking at things like SoFi and can get lower monthly payments but higher interest rates (5.0%) but it's all under one loan, not 4. So idk how that works.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Edit: my credit is 760

    student loan help

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 07:48 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm currently a sophomore in college and thankfully only have 12,000 in debt so far. In the past my dad was willing to pay whatever my federal loan didn't cover. This is becoming too much of a financial burden for him so I'm willing to take the entire college cost on a loan. I don't know what the best way is to go about this. Should i take my federal loan and discover loan the rest? My dad has great credit and he is willing to cosign for me. I go to a state school and live at home, it's roughly 11k a year. Fafsa is only going to cover 7,500, which is why i don't know what to do. I do work part time, and paying the remaining amount out of pocket is an option, but then i would be really strapped for cash. I would have to consider getting a second job and then my academics might suffer.

I'm also thinking of taking summer classes at my local community college because im behind in my degree. My summer classes would not be able to be covered with financial aid and my dad is not willing to pay. It's roughly going to be 2k for the classes. I was just thinking of asking for more money on my discover loan, but then i realized that the money goes straight to the school.

My parents are telling me just to "figure it out when the time comes" but this is my life we're talking about. I'm a very organized and scheduled person, so not knowing is making it more complicated.

    Not sure what to do

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 10:15 AM PDT

So I am currently attending a university for bachelors degree in public relations. I am 27 now and I got a late start to my education. Because I was out of high school for so long I was not eligible for HOPE. I am currently $35K in student loans. My first few semesters I was a total idiot and pretty much took out the max amount. However recently I started being more careful and only taking out enough to pay for my tuition while receiving nothing back in return. I still have 3 more semesters and tuition is 3200 a semester and I have no other way to pay for it. I get PELL grant but they only give me like $300 a semester which is awesome, but not nearly enough.. So thats going to be like another $9K added to my $35K and all of the interest.. I am so stressed. I almost wish I never went back to school... can someone give me some insight and tell me I am going to be ok (lol) I feel like not finishing school at this point, but thats stupid. I am so close. But seeing that number rise makes me want to throw up

Change to income driven payment plan?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 11:05 AM PDT

Hi all. First I want to say thank you for all the info I've been getting. It's helped immensely.

So I have $31k sitting at myfedloan and I'm pretty sure I have hit the 120 payments. I applied for PSLF and the temporary expanded plan a month ago. Called them today for an update and to try to find out if they will pull our tax information. I make $47k a year and my husband is over $120k. We're sitting at a crossroad on if we should file jointly or separately. Jointly we would have to pay the government as much and separate we wound. Does this matter for the Loan forgiveness?

Since the beginning of the loan we pay around $250 a month and under IDR with both our incomes the payment would be quite a bit more. With only my income it is $353 for IDR and $236 REPAYE.
For those of you who have dealt with PSLF any suggestions on how to proceed? The payments are tiring to deal with but mainly because I want this debt gone. I had cancer a couple years ago and I want to leave my husband with as little debt as possible if it comes back and things don't go well.

FedLoan incorrectly reporting “missed payment” on four of my loans

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 01:43 PM PDT

I'm currently enrolled in grad school and my loans have been in deferment since October of 2017. It's impossible to miss a payment when I don't have any due - I've actually made extra payments while enrolled.

But still, there is the "missed payment" warning on four of my loans from my credit report. They're even listed as in deferment on the report!

What's the best course of action here? I'm sure this happens all the time due to FedLoan being scum.

    Did I get scammed?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 04:40 PM PDT

Just got a call from a woman during work to call her back about my student loans. Gave them a call after, and man answered, claiming that I do qualify for student loan forgiveness( I'm in 6 figure loans). He was able to reset my FSA ID. Since I was driving and talking, he asked for my debit card number, FSA pin, and other personal information. Me being the stupid idiot I am, give him all that information. He was so charming, that I signed documents while parked on a street on my phone. The company is Capital Student Loan Center. However, I am a bit confused if it is a scam because after a few call backs, a few agents answered and stated their agent number. So reddit, did i get scammed? If so, what do I do now? HELP

More info: He actually did email a public loan forgiveness program form

He asked to scan my first paycheck to him ( I just started a new job)

He wanted my boss to sign a form that states I work for my current employer

    Re-certifying IBR + spouse's income/student loans

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 11:34 AM PDT

Hello. Trying to get a grip on my husband's student loan situation (for reference, we got married last spring).

He owes about $45,000 - several different loans, two different servicers. He has done IBR for the past few years - at the time he signed up, he wasn't making much money, so he owed $0. Now he has to re-certify. It's a bit of annoying paperwork, but we will be able to get it done by the deadline of 3/31 (but we are cutting it close, I admit). We are following the process on studentloans.gov.

    I make ~$48,000 a year, he makes ~$42,000 a year.

I have about $15,000 left in student loans. I pay ~$200 a month, and have done so for the past 2-3 years or so.

Obviously with both of our current incomes, husband and I will be expected to pay quite a bit on his student loans once we finish the re-certification process. I'm aware that IBR takes into account both salaries. Will they also take into account my current student loan debt + the $200 a month I currently pay? It is to a different servicer than either of his and through the regular 10 year process (I never had an account on studentloans.gov until I made one today so that I sign his certification as his spouse).

What kind of situation are we looking at here in terms of payments, etc.?

ETA: Also, can we refinance/consolidate loans in IBR, or will that undo all of the IBR benefits?

Financial Aid Over Paid Scholarship Last Semester Said not to Worry About it Now wants $4k!?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 10:42 AM PDT

I was lucky to receive a scholarship that paid for 3 classes. Apparently it was only supposed to count for 2, so a woman emails me and lets me know they are leaving it as is and I'll receive 2 classes paid for two more semesters. Well I check my billing and I'm on the hook for nearly $4k, even though I also took out loans. I received a big return but I decided to hold it and take out nothing for the summer.

Apparently since I'm 11 credits I don't get the full amount? But they applied it retroactively? I had to call several times to see what was going on with the scholarship because it wasn't coming through. Why didn't someone say take one more credit!?!?! I can't pay $4k right now to make sure I can take my summer classes!?!?!?

Is this legal? What do I do? Who's responsibility is it if they make a mistake? Can they change my billing after a semester is over!?!?!?

Paying off my fiance's Navient loans - settlement question.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 10:31 AM PDT

My fiance has $30K in student loans through Navient. They are in something I forget what the term is (where she does not have to pay due to her low income, but interest is still accumulating). I would like to pay these off and just get this debt wiped out now. Does Navient accept settlement offers?

I resent my mom for making go to college

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 02:22 AM PDT

i went to an early college (go to high school 5 years, get high school diploma and an Associates degree at the end) and graduate a year early. After telling my mom i didnt want to go to college she constantly hounded me about it. I felt beyond pressured and overall just wanted a mental break. I totaled the family car, and her response to try to make me feel better was touring a college campus. I didnt like the school but felt like it was the least i could do. When she asked me about it later my response was "yeah i guess its a good school," and next thing i know shes at the countertop filling out the admissions paperwork (since i had applied there months before and had been accepted). Long story short: I became severely depressed. And dropped out. Fast forward 5 years, im getting my wages garnished bc i haven't been able to afford to pay the loans back. Is there anything i can do?
