I’m 20 and want to be in charge of my life

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:09 PM PDT

I know I have what it takes to run a business.. Obviously nothing huge, but a small business. I wouldn't mind things like physical labor. I just don't know what it is I should do. If you guys have any ideas I'd appreciate it a lot. It doesn't necessarily have to be physical labor either. I just need some ideas to get my thought process going.

Coffee house owners: how long did it take you to get it started?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:27 AM PDT

I'm in my early 20s and hate having to answer to someone at work. I would love to be my own boss and I've always dreamt of having my own little coffee shop. I have a lot of ideas but no experience in the field.

How hard is it to get one off the ground and operating? How much would I need to invest? Did you learn about how to run a bar all by yourself or did you go to business school for that?

Sorry if this was already asked here, I'm new. Any basic information will be appreciated!

    Anybody get into property management?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:37 PM PDT

I currently am in management for a manufacturing company. I actually enjoy the craziness involved in management. Between solving problems, helping people be successful, and having those inevitable difficult conversations.. everything about it. I like it.

With that said, I've been looking into property management as a part time side hustle/small business. Doing it as a side business has peaked my interest, however I know there might be a lot more to it than I'm seeing. Before I start taking classes, anyone have any info on this if they are doing it or have done it? I m thinking a few vacation rentals around my area, maybe a few full time rentals.

What business should I start as an automation person?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:43 PM PDT

I like making prototypes and automate tedious tasks.

I made equipment for bath products production and packaging, each is their own business.

Looking to start another business. Some requirements

    - product business.

    - product has to have no expiry date.

    - simple product. Automating a simple product is already hard.

    - not too messy.

    - prefer niche and unsexy.

    - people cares it's made in Canada. If people don't care, they will just buy from China at a cheaper price.

I been looking through etsy and pinterest but didn't find anything worth automating.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated!

I’m about to fire my first and only employee.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:54 AM PDT

And I think I'm ok with it. One of my biggest fears was that I wouldn't have the heart to fire anyone.

I'm so disappointed though. He's someone I worked with a few years ago. I had very high hopes because I know what he's capable of when he puts some effort in. Things went well at first. I knew his strengths and weaknesses - he's detail oriented, but a bit of a fuck up who would be pretty late about once every other month. I decided I could deal with that (not that I brushed it aside or failed to reprimand him when it happened, but privately I knew I could work with that) and brought him in and trained him up.

He has since been over a half hour late several times within the last month. I had a serious talk with him about respect for me as a boss (just because we worked together doesn't mean I'm your buddy now and I'll let things go, the company comes first) and for the job. I asked him if he wanted to stay with us, and whether he was interested in treating this job seriously. He apologized profusely and said he was proud to be a part of the company, as he had recently helped make a product that is now owned by a famous musician. We moved on.

I knew he smoked weed, but what he does in his off time is none of my concern. At the time of hiring, I told him that there will be no tolerance for coming in high, and he agreed.

A couple weeks ago, halfway through his shift, he pulls out a THC vape pen and says "you mind if I hit this?" I told him of course I do. He then excused himself to go to the bathroom and did it in there anyway. At that point I was stuck. I was furious, but I had just put weeks of training into him. Between that and being late, I wanted to fire him right there, but instead I sent him home. He's still worth what we're paying him, even as a fuck up, but the lack of respect is something I can't deal with, and when we hire another person, I can't have him setting a bad example for what's tolerated.

Yesterday, he was 2 hours late before he finally got back to me and said his girlfriend was having car troubles and they were waiting on a tow truck. This is in the middle of Chicago, where an uber would cost him a few bucks and as many minutes to get to work.

We could still really use his help while I train up a new employee (who no matter what happens, he will never meet for obvious reasons), but I can't imagine just moving forward from here and having him continue to work for us. I'm stuck between chewing him out and giving him a final warning, which will buy me a week or two, or ending it right now.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. Any specific advice or general words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Question about tax liability if I'm receiving ownership shares in a to-be-formed c-corp that will receive $500k funding at $1mm valuation. If I own 10%, am I suddenly on the hook for tax on $100k??

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:03 PM PDT

Planning to form a c-corp with two other people. One of them is going to invest $500k of his own money for a 50% share of the company. The other will get 40%, and I'll get 10%, based on our contributions so far and our skills. These will all be "Class A" shares, with the $500k investment piece being preferred.

I'm not an independently wealthy person, so I'm worried that I'll suddenly be on the hook for this sudden $100k "value" in this business I'm receiving. Is there anything like this I need to watch out for?

Question about purchasing an existing/established small business?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 12:09 AM PDT

Hypothetically, If you are looking to invest in an established small business such as a café/hairdresser's then when said business is purchased and you become the official owner, do you need to work there?

If you already have a career and you want to buy this as an investment, then can you hire a general manager to oversee daily operations (while you carry on with you current career) or do you need to be on the premises regularly/daily?

How "hands-on" do you need to be/how does it work?

Can't decide on small business name

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:14 PM PDT

    Hi all, i'm starting a casino party business. Similar to a DJ, i will be hired by customers or event planners to turn any fundraiser or party into a casino night or poker tournament. I've been in this industry for quite some time and want to start my own company, doing my own sales and running my own events. I cannot decide on a business name -- which i'm basically at the whim of whatever domain names are available. Here's what i thought of so far;

    Double Down Entertainment LLC

    Five Diamonds Events LLC

    Action Casino LLC

    Stack City LLC

    That's Poker LLC

    Lucky 7's Events LLC

If anyone would like to give me any feedback on these names it would be greatly appreciated. I would like their to be some sort of 'high-end appeal' when you hear my business name, as many competitors in my location are on the lower end of quality. any suggestions also appreciated!! thank you!

Best inventory software for 2nd hand products?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:17 PM PDT

Anyone else here running a vintage/second hand business? How do you keep track of everything?

I sell vintage clothing and I was wondering if anyone has advice on the best inventory software to use, preferably free or not on a monthly fee. I currently use a combination of Wave for accounting and spreadsheets for inventory. Wave has limited inventory capabilities. Many of the multi-purpose accounting/small biz software programs are more geared towards people selling the same goods or services (e.g. muffins, haircut...), however, in my case, my goods are all individual pieces, so it's a lot of work to enter each piece and its cost (I'm moving 100-300 pieces per month). I want to streamline my process!

    Thanks!

    Questions For Business Brokers

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:27 PM PDT

Been trying to look this up but can't find an "official" stance.

If you are in the industry as a business broker and another professional say a web designer, approaches you and offers a referral fee to generate leads for him. Is that illegal, against the guidelines, or break fiduciary responsibility? All the business broker would have to do is sell or refer X business Y services from another professional.

Can you register a trademark without giving your home address?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:38 PM PDT

I am a female sole trader (this becomes relevant later) and I want to register my business name as a trademark. I have performed all of the relevant checks and it is available. However, once you register it, the address can be checked. I deliver talks to 1000s of people and I have had creepy men give me unsolicited attention, send me messages and generally harass me (not due to what I talk about but due to their lack of boundaries) My concern is that if I register my trademark to my home address some of these weirdos will be a short Google search away from turning up at my home.

Is there a way around this?

    I'm in the UK.

New to this and hoping to learn more before making a decision

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:21 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm a first time poster here and I am hoping that you will be able to point me in the right direction. My wife and I have always wanted to open a small business in our community. I currently work in education, it is a stable job that is going well enough, but probably not be what I want to do in the long term. My wife is currently home with our kids, we have a 5, 3 and 1 year old. She is a speech pathologist by training, but does not want to pursue a career in the field if at all possible.

An awful lot rides on us being able to bring home enough money to get by as well as we currently are, which is why we don't want to just dive into this, which brings me to my question.

Neither of us come from a business background and we'd like to have the benefit of having an education before we get serious. I've seen that there are some decent looking online options that are also free. University of the People is a free online accredited college that offers associates, BA's and MBAs all online, all free. Are there other better ways to do this? Would an associates suffice? Are there a handful of specific classes that would make more sense more than a full degree?

In addition to my question about education, I'd be interested in hearing from any young parents who were able to make this work.

    Thanks!

Is it too early to get investors? | Looking for investors

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:02 AM PDT

I had an idea about a company which is coming to real life. I am the CEO and the only one in the company. The MVP will be out within a week or two but even for publishing the MVP we need a little bit of funding.

The strengths we have now:- 1. It has the potential to earn millions 2. Targets almost 15% of the world population. 3. User research has shown 100% upvotes 4. It's a gesture of goodwill towards the disabled.

Weaknesses:- 1. The final product is not totally ready. It's only about 45% done.

PS I'm only 18 and this is my first business

Estate Sale Company Owners - Can you answer a couple questions?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:46 AM PDT

I have been selling items on Amazon as of the past year and it has turned into a full time job for me. Everything I make is reinvested into the company, but due to my experience in "flipping", I want to start another related venture to increase money coming in.

I have always gone to estate sales and had an interest in them. I have really tried to study what items they are selling for what prices, how many employees, what they charge, how much a typical sale expects to profit, and how long prep time is.

I have a few questions for anyone who is in the business.

Basically, are you to the point or do you want to get to the point where you aren't the one doing the prep and sales? How did you find a partner or do you have a partner? Do you eventually just want to get to the point where you're there on sale days for QC and thats it? Have you gotten to the point where the business is running itself and you are just scheduling consultations and scheduling the sales? What steps did you take to get there?

I have tried to look online for answers to these questions and have not really found any. Thank you! Any insight would be highly appreciated.
