Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:17 AM PDT

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Lyft IPO opens at $87.24 in trading debut after pricing at $72

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:49 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/29/lyft-ipo-stock-starts-trading-on-public-market.html

The offering marks the first debut from a heavyweight class of tech companies going public in 2019.

Lyft revealed skyrocketing revenues in its initial IPO prospectus, but posted 2018 losses north of $900 million.

The stock's early performance will serve as something of a litmus test for public investors and their tolerance for mature, not-yet-profitable tech giants.

    Edit 2:

Update as of 14:33 EST, it's at $81.54.

In Ethiopia Crash, Faulty Sensors on Boeing 737 Max Are Suspected

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:52 PM PDT

A similar series of events involving faulty sensor data and an automated system suspected in bringing down a Boeing plane in Indonesia may have also caused the crash of the same type of jet in Ethiopia in March, according to people who have been briefed on the contents of the black box in Ethiopia.

Data from a vane-like device, called an angle-of-attack sensor, incorrectly activated the automatic, computer-controlled system, called MCAS, which pushed the nose of the plane down, eventually leading to a crash that killed all 157 people aboard.

The black box, also called the flight data recorder, contains information on dozens of systems aboard the plane. The black boxes on both planes, Boeing's latest generation of the 737, survived the crashes, allowing investigators to begin piecing together what caused the disasters. Both investigations are ongoing and no final determinations have been made.

There are two angle-of-attack sensors on the Boeing 737 Max, one attached to the fuselage on the pilot's side and another on the co-pilot's side. Investigators in Indonesia, who have produced a preliminary report and released some of the information from the box, saw that one sensor produced a reading that was at least 20 degrees different from the other as the plane took off and began its ascent.

The system was programmed to use data from only one of the sensors, which on that flight was malfunctioning. With the bad data, MCAS was activated, erroneously pushing the nose of the plane down. The pilots on the Indonesian flight tried repeatedly to override the system, but after about 12 minutes lost their battle and the plane crashed.

None of the people briefed could say whether the black box data indicated how or whether the Ethiopian pilots tried to counteract the system. But the same bouncing, bobbing trajectory of the plane seen in the Indonesian flight as the pilots tried to save the plane is apparent in publicly available flight data for the Ethiopian plane.

Air traffic controllers in Ethiopia also said they saw the oscillating trajectory before the plane crashed. The pilot radioed back that he was having trouble controlling the aircraft, but did not give details on what systems were causing problems.

I am conducting a study into different approaches towards investing - how community members find their picks, how deep do they go in their analysis, do they believe in DCF etc. I hope to analyze it and publish on this sub later, or only among respondents - it will be up to them. There might be other perks. Please DM me if you want to take part. Cheerio.

Government of Pakistan is offering 6.75% return in USD?!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:55 AM PDT

If you visit the website (below) Pakistan is offering a 6.75% return on investment on a minimum investment of $5,000.

On the website: "Pakistan Banao Certificates (PBC) is authorized and regulated by the Government of Pakistan (GoP) and denominated in United States Dollar for the investors having liquidity in their bank accounts overseas. PBCs will be coupon securities carrying coupon of 6.25 percent payable semiannually and 6.75 percent payable semiannually for 3 and 5-Years respectively. Profit payment shall be exempted from deduction of tax at source."

Should I just sell all my investments in VTSAX, VTIAX, online savings accounts and just buy these certificates? What's the catch here?

I'm skeptical because my mom (who is Pakistani) once deposited $2,000 in a Pakistani bank back in 2008 and it disappeared when it merged with Citibank and nobody could find it when we went to visit in 2017.

How to actually buy Lyft at it's ipo price $72

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:13 AM PDT

How do you buy a stock at it's ipo price? Everytime I see a stock's ipo, it seems to open way higher than what the ipo price was set at. So how do you actually buy Lyft at $72/share? If I put a buy order in with a $72 limit would it execute at the open?

    I use ETrade btw.

    FWONA vs FWONK

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:58 PM PDT

FWONA has voting rights, while FWONK does not. That said, it seems as if the latter is more popular and has a higher market cap (millions vs billions). Am I missing anything? Are there other differences? Which is better to invest in?

Credit spread, selling puts vs selling calls

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:11 PM PDT

So if i'm bullish on a stock, lets say i want a credit spread, do i buy a call and sell a call OTM, or do i buy a put and sell a put ITM?

looking at these 2 examples, risk reward is both 20$ risk and 80$ reward potential, but it looks like the put strategie is the way to go, am i seeing this correctly?

Does anyone know where private wealth managers access or generate ideas?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:39 PM PDT

I know PWMs can access their broker's sell side research (UBS PWM can access UBS sell side research), but how else - or even using that - do they generate equity and credit investment ideas for their clients?

    VFIAX vs VFINX

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:51 PM PDT

When I first opened my Vanguard Roth IRA I bought into the VFINX mutual fund. That fund has since closed. It seems nearly identical to VFIAX other than having a higher expense ratio. It also seems to have slightly outperformed VFIAX recently although I have no idea why since the two funds appear to have identical holdings. Would it make sense to move everything I have from VFINX into VFIAX given the lower expense ratio? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Reporting a wash sale when filing taxes

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:02 AM PDT

I am entering line items for 1099b into tax software (taxslayer) manually and i have bought and sold amzn 5 times within one month. 3 lines have a wash sale disallowed value, 2 do not have a value there. This is in addition to proceeds/costbasis/dates etc.

How many reported 1099b line items should I create to reflect these 5 purchase/sales. Is it 5, or can i summarize into a single given they are all short term. They are in chronological order. There is also a sum of all 5 proceeds/cost basis/ wash sale/dates. Could I just use the sum data and create a single line item to reflect 5 transactions- if so would i add subtract or add the total wash sale disallowed from the cost basis?

If i have to do 5 individual lines, would i just write the line and if it has a wash sale value, add that to the next line's cost basis?

at this stage i dont' have the option of switching softwares but will for future years.

thanks so much for your help in advance,

    Is getrichslow.net a scam?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:35 PM PDT

Hello all, I was recommeneded https://getrichslow.net/ ,and upon digging into the free content, I'm rather on the fence with appoaching this style of invest. 7 hours in total, and ~$200 for full course, customers will learn how to apply a 5 year value algorithm using macros on an excel in order to value both under and over appreciated single business stocks. Apparenty, the founder claims he was able to get a 27% return for some stocks over a 14 month period. For a situation of getting rich 'slow', I'm going to stick with the classic diversification. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Maybe I'm just being dense but I cannot figure out where to check my YTD in my fidelity Roth IRA. When I log in and see my holdings under positions I can see the gains and losses for each fund but not my whole portfolio. Any help would be great!
