Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 04:18 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

I'm sharing my Google Sheets Stock Tracker

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 09:18 PM PST

A few weeks ago, I shared my Excel Stock Tracker with Excel's new "stock features" on it. Unfortunately, there were a lot of people who couldn't use it due to MSFT's different Excel platforms (Student and older versions couldn't use it).

Today I'm sharing my Google Sheets Stock Tracker. I must say I like this one better.

The original ideas came from a Canadian Cannabis Stock Tracker that I got somewhere on Reddit. Sorry, I can't find the original post that had it in it.

Tesla sidesteps Wallstreet and lines up about $2 billion in loans for Shanghai Gigafactory, analyst report says

    • JL Warren said the first stage of financing will likely have a 3.9 percent interest rate, below the People's Bank of China benchmark rate of 4.35 percent. That should help Tesla get its assembly line running to produce its initial 250,000 lower-end Model 3 electric sedans.

    Invest in AI

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 01:02 AM PST

Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM, distribute their artificial neural networks almost free of charge. $1 for 1000 recognition.

Whether it is the recognition of an animal, object, human face or text.

This opens up tremendous opportunities for the application of AI. Now there is no need to spend time and money on academic studies of AI, you can take a ready-made solution, insert it into convenient usability and offer it to users.

Very soon, we will not be able to find a single mobile app in which there is no AI.

How do VISA and MasterCard not make money...

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:18 PM PST

Looking at PayPal, SQ, Apple Pay and all these new-ish prepaid cards and banks like Monzo, Revolut, N26 etc they ALL involve VISA or MasterCard.

With the exception of paying cash what are some situations, preferably common ones, where visa or MasterCard don't take their slice?

There was an interesting discussion on Industry Focus podcast about how some companies couldn't really be usurped even with a new rival being well financed.

I'm sure Blockchain will be cited as something to cause the downfall of these two, but other than that what can a company do to eat into their share?

I'm UK based so apologies if there's an obvious thing in the US that I'm missing

Best Tech ETF at the moment?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:44 PM PST

I'm thinking about putting around 10% of my portfolio in a tech ETF. I'm fairly young and very risk tolerant and looking to up the potential long term gains of my investments. I'm a strong believer in the tech industry (as I'm sure most are these days) and think this is where I want to tilt my portfolio (currently just invested in general domestic/international funds of large/med/small caps with an edge towards small caps).

Some options I've weighed are VGT and ARKW. However, I'm not totally sold on either. VGT seems to be a historically strong fund (I know past doesn't indicate future) with some solid holdings, but I'm not sold on all of them and it is also missing a few well known tech giants. ARKW seems to have a much better looking portfolio in terms of what I'm looking for but the ER is a bit high. I've also looked into some AI/automation funds like BOTZ but I don't think they're gonna do much in the short term. I'd like to hear anyones thoughts on these funds, as well as any other funds I should look at.

    Americans using SureTrader

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 12:09 AM PST

Recently I have been looking into day trading without having 25,000 in my account. My research lead me to SureTrader, a brokerage that is based in the Bahamas. Many people who endorse this brokerage are Americans getting around the PDT law. I was just wondering how Americans are able to use this brokerage, when it specifically says that they arent allowed to.

This is what it says in the frequently asked questions section of their website.

"MintBroker International, Ltd., is located and licensed as a broker-dealer in the Bahamas, and it owns suretrader.com (collectively "Sure Trader") and therefore is regulated by the laws of the Bahamas.

Only the following persons, companies or entities can open a Sure Trader account to trade U.S. Securities and Foreign Securities:

    • Persons outside the U.S.
    • Trusts outside the U.S.
    • Companies outside the U.S. such as a U.K. company."

Some Uber, Lyft Drivers to Get Stock in IPOs

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:36 AM PST

Uber's plan would give some drivers either a cash bonus or the option to use that money to buy shares at the IPO price, the report says.

Lyft, meanwhile, would give drivers with 10,000 rides logged in $1,000 they can keep or use to participate in the company's IPO. Lyft drivers with at least 20,000 rides would be eligible for $10,000 in cash or a stock equivalent.

Anyone own vending machines or arcade games?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:20 PM PST

I'm really curious to hear from the owners of these machines. For a standard vending machine how much do you pay and what are the profits for your machines after you restock? I'm thinking of buying a few in the near future and am curious if it's a good idea.

And I guess apply what I said uptop to arcade games.

Facebook and Google will be punished with giant fines in the UK if they fail to rid their platforms of toxic content

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:13 AM PST

    https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-and-google-fined-for-harmful-content-margot-james-2019-2

Exclusive: The British government plans to punish firms like Facebook and Google with fines potentially worth billions of dollars if they don't rid their platforms of content considered harmful.

In an interview with Business Insider, the UK's digital minister, Margot James, suggested a new tech regulator could administer fines of up to 4% of companies' global revenue.

The British government wants tech firms to eradicate illegal hate speech, more subtle forms of abuse like child grooming, and problematic content around suicide and self-harm.

The plans will be set out in a policy paper next month, and it follows UK ministers meeting last week with Silicon Valley tech executives, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Damian Collins, a lawmaker who has called on the government to introduce a fines regime, welcomed the news and said tech firms "listen with their wallets."

IPO question. New to buying individual stocks.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 06:56 PM PST

I am uncertain how IPOs generally work out. Can anyone tell me what to expect when Lyft goes public? Can the average Joe buy stock in it right away, or only certain people for a while? Not to mention that I'm only on Robinhood, so that would be my outlet to purchase anything. Thanks for any answers!

Looking for a specific investing course by an esteemed professor that I’ve seen here

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:19 PM PST

It had no videos. It was by a currently teaching professor.

It was a very plain site that was only text and a white background

It had about 20 chapters all about finance fundamentals and investing. The whole thing is great concise and very good stuff.

Anyone know which course I'm referencing?

Portfolio Investing - How to generate a portfolio

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 09:51 PM PST

I wanted to create a portfolio similar to Ray Dalio's

but to maintain it how do you generate reports so that you can 'rebalance it' like do I have do all the math each time across diferent platforms... TD Ameritrade, ETRADE, Robinhood app, and other places I have it all? Or is there one place I can track my whole portfolio and how it moves and compare it to the portfolio below:

    • 30.00% US Total Stock Market (VTI)
    • 40.00% Long Term Treasuries (TLT)
    • 15.00% Intermediate-Term Treasuries (VGIT)
    • 7.50% Commodities (DBC / GSG)
    • 7.50% Gold (IAU)

Also what are your thoughts on this above portfolio/ I Made it extra 'safe ' for now because I'm worried about a globar recession. If a recession occurs I'll rebalance it and add a higher Stock/equity and some emerging markets and international stocks.
