Best career advice my grandfather gave me

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 06:54 PM PDT

He told me to get my degree in Accounting, then do something else.

Of course, I didn't listen for the longest time. I did the stint in Big 4 (Big 6 at the time). I moved into industry and worked in both accounting and FP&A. I did M&A consulting and business process improvement consulting. I learned how to implement complex business systems like SAP, Hyperion and Oracle.

I was always paid well, but I always disliked accounting. I did enjoy getting to learn about how businesses were run, what the markets and products were like and dealing with people. I became a student of the industry I was in at the moment.

Today, I'm just a business person. I work in general management and get involved in operations, engineering, marketing, product development and administration. I can readily translate business decisions into how it affects the bottom line. Accounting is the language of business and a degree in accounting qualifies you for just about anything in business allowing time and learning. I'm still a CPA in good standing, but I rarely use the credential in my day to day work life, and I love it.

I wish I'd followed my grandfather's advice sooner. Maybe this will be helpful to someone young in this subreddit...

    Help motivate a Staff One.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 05:06 PM PDT

We are reaching the tail end of busy season and I can't help but feel demoralized. It seems like all the work we do truly does not matter. We go through this year long process in order to sign off on a one page paper. Not only that in turns out even after doing all this work there's a pretty large percent of the time that the big 4's audit has deficiencies.
Help set my mind right. Why do all these late nights matter? How do you motivate yourself to do this job? What do you see as the benefits of public accounting?

Edit: Seriously. Please tell me why this job is important. I'm sorry I came across that I was bitching about hours. I just want to feel like the work I do isn't pointless.

Trying to move from accounts payable to actual accounting.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 08:54 PM PDT

I have been doing A/P at my current company since graduating last August, but the position is a dead end. The company also has a toxic culture that I no longer wish to be a part of.

I am going to polish up my resume this weekend and start applying for a new position.

Many job listings I've seen so far like "Staff accountant" and "Junior account" still involves some A/P work.

How can I frame my A/P experience in order to land an actual accounting position?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 08:24 PM PDT

Anyone ever been in this situation currently contemplating about leaving before we start this Audit. I know I'll burn bridges but i'm being burn't out. I just got a bad feedback after pouring my heart out 65-80h week nonstop on my previous engagement, and Just felt insulted. I have 2 years of expierience in B4 , I have my CPA license, not sure if i'll even be promoted to senior after this.

Resume critique for public accounting hopeful

Resume critique for public accounting hopeful

    Hello all,

I have decided that I want to try a public accounting internship. I thought industry would be for me, but I'm doing an internship right now, and it was fun at first to prepare JEs and financial statements, but I'm pretty bored with it now and can't imagine doing it for the rest of my life. So I figure I should check out public.

You will notice that some details are real, such as my city, current employer, and school. I didn't want to provide so much information that you can figure out who I am, but I wanted to provide enough for you to get a fair understanding of my experience. For those of you who don't know UNLV, it has a pretty good accounting program. The Big 4 actively recruit here--even KPMG, and they don't even have an office in Vegas. If you don't know Barrick Gold, it's the largest gold mining company in the world and holds position 791 on Forbes' Global 2000 list if that helps you at all (https://www.forbes.com/companies/barrick-gold/?list=global2000#5273cf3a558e).

So on to my actual resume...My skills are pretty lacking. I've looked at several postings for public accounting internships, and they pretty much require MS Office proficiency and the ability to learn and follow directions. But I still feel like I need other stuff on there. Should I learn any software? I'm using Oracle in my current position. If I work at a smaller firm, should I learn QuickBooks (at least the basics)?

As for my school activities, I'm participating in the Medallion Program at UNLV which I'm sure every accounting firm recruiter in Vegas is familiar with. What they might not be familiar with is the Nevada Global Business program. It's a program that takes business students to I think 8 business hubs around the world to visit different businesses and hear them talk about business stuff. I went to Singapore and visited Microsoft, Haws, Caterpillar, MalwareBytes, and a couple others. It's not related to accounting, but it's definitely the most interesting thing I've done through school.

Thank you so much for any advice you can provide. I can't wait to be successful myself partly because I like money, but also because I want to be able to help others reach their goals too.

Found in a Facebook group: “I should do my own taxes (by hand), or turn in my MBA”

Does PWC still require 3 years for senior instead of 2 like other big 4?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 09:33 AM PDT

Promotions are pretty important as they can keep you in public accounting longer than you'd like. I'm trying to decide between EY and PWC. Should I go EY so I can exit sooner in the future or is this information outdated?

Audit bro in need of help from tax bros/bras...Roth 401(k) -> Roth IRA rollover = Form 8606???

    Posted: 21 Mar 2019 09:09 PM PDT

I realize this sub is mainly for memes and despair, but my tax prep software (technically website...Credit Karma) is acting wonky, and I don't know where else I could seek the collective wisdom of hundreds of CPAs and CPsomedays.

Basically, Credit Karma is reporting my Roth 401(k) rollover to my Roth IRA on Form 8606 Nondeductible IRAs - Part II, 2018 Conversions From Traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRAs to Roth IRAs. There is zero mention of 401(k)s on Form 8606 (let alone Part II), so I'm pretty sure this is wrong. What gives? Should a Roth 401(k) -> Roth IRA rollover be reported on Form 8606, or some other form?

Whoever can answer this, I will write you a doctor's note so you don't have to go into the office this Saturday.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.
