r/Stocks Technicals Tuesday - Feb 26, 2019 Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:05 AM PST Feel free to talk about technical analysis here; post your arguments here and not in the current post. Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price. TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term. Intro to technical analysis by Stockcharts chartschool and their article on candlesticks If you have questions, please see the following word cloud and click through for the wiki: See our past daily discussions here. Google reportedly poaches Intel, Qualcomm and Nvidia engineers for 'gChips' team Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:21 AM PST Google looks likely to be doing their own CPU (SoC). We have Amazon doing their own server chips. Google already did their own AI/ML chips. The long term for chip makers appear to be at risk if this trend continues. [link] [comments] |
Facebook Stock: Too Good to Be True Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:46 AM PST Facebook has financial statements that Wall Street dreams are made of. Profit margins are at 40 percent, free cash flow outperforms due to low capex, and annual growth exceeds 20 percent year-over-year. In fact, FB posted 35 percent growth this past year with lots of runway to go. Meanwhile many of its FAANG peers struggle with high capex (Netflix) and diminishing growth (Apple). [link] [comments] |
Tesla shares fall after SEC asks judge to hold Elon Musk in contempt for violating deal (CNBC) Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:49 PM PST Shares of Tesla fell 5 percent after the SEC has asked a judge to hold Elon Musk in contempt for violating its deal. The SEC cited an "inaccurate" February 19 tweet about production, Bloomberg first reported. [link] [comments] |
Any stock trading platform with practice accounts (simulations) Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:41 AM PST Been studying stock trading on my own using online courses and books for a while. I feel like trying to actually trade without using real money if possible. Any recommendations ? [link] [comments] |
Levis IPO... is the clothing industry a good investment? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:26 AM PST It's not a necessary commodity, the thing that attracts me to shares in Levis is just that I love the brand. But is it worth investing? The brand is big with the young crowd and slightly older, the range extends from 90s colourful sporty street wear to classic americana vintage. Online business seems to have taken off and they have interesting collaborations. Do companies like this grow that much when they're already established? Listing ipo a good sign or a sign of struggling? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:26 AM PST The only news I can find on it is an analyst giving it a sell rating. Why is it up almost 7% today? [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on Phillip Morris as long-term value investment? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:57 PM PST Reasonable PE, international diversification of income, possible long-term leveraging of existing relationships to cannabis market are positives that look very attractive to me. IQOS push seems iffy to me, I like it as a product but not as a priority you might say. As far as I know, this has gotten no traction on USA approval to sell? Also selling IQOS as some kind of health push "away" from their current tobacco market bothers me, I don't think they should be arguing about the morality of what they're doing, it's proven to be a losing argument long term. My current theory is that tobacco use trending downwards is already priced in very well, while the probability of leveraging their position to become a major player in the cannabis market has been downplayed due to extreme valuations of companies like Canopy. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:48 PM PST I was looking at Canopy Growth (CGC) on Finviz today. Shockingly, it has a 30% short float. Am I missing something here? Could this be explained by concluding that perhaps a smaller-ish group of investors with a lot of leverage are betting against this company and this skews the number? Or are a lot of people just doubting this one's success? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:26 PM PST The $84.5 billion merger between AT&T (T) and Time Warner will move forward after a ruling made by a federal appeals judge on Tuesday. $20B FCF/year PE: 10.88 Dividends of 7% (pretty high right now & i expect them to drop this rate soon) How do you guys think this will effect the stock price? Good time to buy? Will consumers back out from a potential monopoly? Bell telephone company happening all over again? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a mentor in San Diego area. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:01 PM PST I'm a new retail trader, been trading stocks and options for a year and a half. looking for someone who can give me guidance and insight and pass some knowledge downtown to me and work together possibly [link] [comments] |
Ladybaybee recommended stocks 2019-02-26 Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:59 AM PST Link to imgur with predictions HOW I USE THIS: 1) All the stocks identified in the table are qualified as "BUY" opportunities. 2) I focus in the column "Success Rate(3m)" which shows the precision of the agents in the last 3 calendar months. I personally feel most comfortable with Rates 0.8 or higher. 3) Then, I see the number in "Tx(3m)" which represents the number of transactions that the agents predicted for this stock in the last 3 months. I prefer stocks that have had at least two transactions during this period. 4) Finally, I look at Growth(3m), if the agents have had a considerable growth (>5% in 3 months) then I follow that trade. 5) If a row in the table is colored green then it means that stock has been on the rise today so I purchase it immediately in order to ride the wave up. On the other hand, if the row is colored red, then I wait out until very close to market close to purchase the stock and let the price bottom out before climbing up again tomorrow. 6) After I purchase the stocks, I ALWAYS set a stop loss order at -2.5% from my buying price valid for the day. I think this is good hygiene, no matter how confident I am of my system, I still want to make sure that my losses are capped. I update this stop loss order every day. BACKGROUND I am not a financier or economist. I am electrical engineer with equal passion in artificial intelligence and financial markets. For the past 2 years I have been working on a system that would make short term predictions of stocks. The system is rather complex, I use multiple layers which include: Convolutional Neural Networks, LSTMs and Genetic Algorithms. All bulked together produce an output like in this image. The way to interpret the image is a follows: Symbol and Date columns are self explanatory, Quorum refers to autonomous agents that decide whether to BUY/NOT BUY or SELL/HOLD a stock. Each symbol has 9 agents, and the Quorum column, counts the number of agents that recommend Buy, Selling or Holding the stock. The "Not Owned" column means: if you don't own this stock then you should … The "Owned" column means: if you own this stock you should HOLD or SELL. The column "Growth(1 Year)" refers to what what has been the growth of this system of Agents in the past calendar year. The column "Tx(1Yr)" shows the number of full transactions that these agents recommended in the last calendar year. "Factor" is just the division of Growth divided by Transactions to get the average growth per transaction. Finally "Success Rate" shows how successful these agents have been in their recommendations in the past calendar year, success 1 means 100% successful, 0.5 means 50% successful, and so on. Many people have been curious about the actual process that the system follows, so here it is: for every symbol (600 stocks are analyzed daily), we get the full stock data (open, close, high, low, volume) for the past 4 months. Each stock is associated with another set of "lookalike" stocks as well as major ETF's. This initial dataset is run through a convolutional layer that extracts an undisclosed number of features. These features are then passed onto a recurrent neural network (LSTM) where sequences and patterns are extracted. The LSTM then spits out probabilities for the likelihood that this stock will have a positive, negative and neutral tendency in the next N days. These probabilities are then fed to a genetic evolution system (GES). This system essentially checks the predictions for the past N days and compares them with reality, following that the systems knows which predictions are performing the best. Once the system knows which stocks are being simulated the best, then the system automatically finds which of these best performing stocks have the biggest potential for the next few days. The system does not output explanations, unfortunately us humans are not capable of understanding (or visualizing) a problem of this dimensionality, for example the LSTM part alone works with over 10 million dimensions, not features but dimensions. If you had to sell one of these which would you sell? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:26 PM PST If you had to sell $5,000 worth of socks in the next two weeks and you had SO & FGRIX which would you sell, when would you sell it and why? Also tax wise - would just pay capital gains tax on it come tax season if owned more than one year correct? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
finding skc.nz on the market with ameritrade? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:36 AM PST https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/SKC.NZ?p=SKC.NZ This stock has been around for 20 years steady at 3-4 usd and paying div that should be going up soon, Yet I can not find them when trying to buy them using ameritrade. Are they trading under a different name or ticker? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:01 AM PST This stock hit all my screener requirements and I'd love to add it to my portfolio. Only problem, it's a Russian telecom company :( I have other options that still are in my screener range that would be fine additions but this one is the best of the bunch. Am I being overly idealistic in having this concern? It would be nice to have Russian money coming into my account though as they pay a generous dividend :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:53 AM PST I am super new to this but should i buy stocks in shrimp? Just noticed the value went up like 30% I may just be looking wrong or something or maybe it's a bad idea and will go down soon thanks! [link] [comments] |
North american investors, do you own any foreign stocks? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:00 PM PST North american investors! Do you own any foreign stocks and which? Not counting stocks listed on US markets like AstraZeneca, Alibaba and Ericsson. Would be interesting to know as an european investor :) [link] [comments] |
Who do you think is the best CEO right now? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:19 AM PST I will start with my opinion ,which I am sure is very controversial- Mark Zuckerberg is the best CEO ,saying again in my opinion. He has of course a lot of shortcomings, but he is being able to grow FB into a cash- generating machine and the company has been growing massively over the last decade. I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but that is just my opinion. Interested to hear what are your opinions on the best CEOs out there. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:50 AM PST I purchased TD on Jan. 16, 2019 at $70.60 (CAN) a share. Now it's $76.80, and looking at the chart for TD it looks like it's about to go down again soon in a cyclical pattern. I'd be happy with this sell, as I would lock in a gain of almost 10% in just over a month. On the other hand, I always hear that "time in the market is better than timing the market" and how 90% of investors fail to time the market. So is it smarter to lock in my gain or keep holding on? NLSN Earnings - Has anybody been holding or thinking about opening a position with Nielsen lately? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:58 AM PST I was expecting a large swing in TTD because of their earnings and the strangle I bought right before earnings were released paid off significantly. TTD's Q3 earnings report mentions their success with Nielesen's Digital Ad Ratings platform and how it's helping with TTD's high customer retention (over 95% IIRC) and I'm digging through their most recent earnings reports now, but my guess is that the DARs are continuing to deliver. That being said, I'm trying to gauge how much TTD's performance is a result of them using Nielsen's DARs and how that translates to the overall performance of Nielsen's Ad analytics tools in general (i.e. what is the customer sentiment on Nielsen's products?) Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on Machine Learning for Stocks Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:20 PM PST I come on peace. Just like the title says, curious of what this subs thoughts are on using Predictive Model techniques for picking stocks. Obviously there are many holes in a backward looking methodology but for example I recently created a decision tree to analyze small cap stocks and predict if they had a % growth of >6 in the last year. Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:41 PM PST I am wanting to transfer my funds (which is in USD) from my current brokerage to Interactive Brokers. My current brokerage offer free ACAT transfer. Am I able to transfer my USD funds? or do I only get to transfer a stock over to IB? [link] [comments] |
