Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:50 AM PST Hey all I've been investing for about 2 years now and I'm ready to get more serious. I tend to buy or sell on trends, industry, and news. In general, I don't sell often. If my stock goes down, I usually wait for it to go back up. I'm doing well enough, but I think it's time for me to learn how to read (and interpret!) a company balance sheet. I'm not great with math but I think this is going to be necessary for me to invest seriously. What resources would you recommend for my education? I'm not great with economic jargon either (I'm an English teacher and an artist lol!) Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:45 PM PST I'm sorta new to investing and had a question about dividends. So let's say the ex-div date is feb 27th and the payment date is march 11th. If i have the stock on the 26 of february and then decide to sell before the payment, would i still get the dividend??? this might be a stupid question but i couldn't find an answer [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:26 PM PST Today in the Stock Market I traded $AAPL $JD $JPM $TWTR $X. It was a frustrating day as I shorted to soon off the open in anticipation of the early drop, but was stopped out then the anticipated drop followed. Hopefully you enjoy. [link] [comments] |

Ladybaybee recommended stocks 2019-02-27 Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:45 AM PST HOW I USE THIS: 1) All the stocks identified in the table are qualified as "BUY" opportunities. 2) I focus in the column "Success Rate(3m)" which shows the precision of the agents in the last 3 calendar months. I personally feel most comfortable with Rates 0.8 or higher. 3) Then, I see the number in "Tx(3m)" which represents the number of transactions that the agents predicted for this stock in the last 3 months. I prefer stocks that have had at least two transactions during this period. 4) Finally, I look at Growth(3m), if the agents have had a considerable growth (>5% in 3 months) then I follow that trade. 5) If a row in the table is colored green then it means that stock has been on the rise today so I purchase it immediately in order to ride the wave up. On the other hand, if the row is colored red, then I wait out until very close to market close to purchase the stock and let the price bottom out before climbing up again tomorrow. 6) After I purchase the stocks, I ALWAYS set a stop loss order at -2.5% from my buying price valid for the day. I think this is good hygiene, no matter how confident I am of my system, I still want to make sure that my losses are capped. I update this stop loss order every day. BACKGROUND I am not a financier or economist. I am electrical engineer with equal passion in artificial intelligence and financial markets. For the past 2 years I have been working on a system that would make short term predictions of stocks. The system is rather complex, I use multiple layers which include: Convolutional Neural Networks, LSTMs and Genetic Algorithms. All bulked together produce an output like in this image. The way to interpret the image is a follows: Symbol and Date columns are self explanatory, Quorum refers to autonomous agents that decide whether to BUY/NOT BUY or SELL/HOLD a stock. Each symbol has 9 agents, and the Quorum column, counts the number of agents that recommend Buy, Selling or Holding the stock. The "Not Owned" column means: if you don't own this stock then you should … The "Owned" column means: if you own this stock you should HOLD or SELL. The column "Growth(1 Year)" refers to what what has been the growth of this system of Agents in the past calendar year. The column "Tx(1Yr)" shows the number of full transactions that these agents recommended in the last calendar year. "Factor" is just the division of Growth divided by Transactions to get the average growth per transaction. Finally "Success Rate" shows how successful these agents have been in their recommendations in the past calendar year, success 1 means 100% successful, 0.5 means 50% successful, and so on. Many people have been curious about the actual process that the system follows, so here it is: for every symbol (600 stocks are analyzed daily), we get the full stock data (open, close, high, low, volume) for the past 4 months. Each stock is associated with another set of "lookalike" stocks as well as major ETF's. This initial dataset is run through a convolutional layer that extracts an undisclosed number of features. These features are then passed onto a recurrent neural network (LSTM) where sequences and patterns are extracted. The LSTM then spits out probabilities for the likelihood that this stock will have a positive, negative and neutral tendency in the next N days. These probabilities are then fed to a genetic evolution system (GES). This system essentially checks the predictions for the past N days and compares them with reality, following that the systems knows which predictions are performing the best. Once the system knows which stocks are being simulated the best, then the system automatically finds which of these best performing stocks have the biggest potential for the next few days. The system does not output explanations, unfortunately us humans are not capable of understanding (or visualizing) a problem of this dimensionality, for example the LSTM part alone works with over 10 million dimensions, not features but dimensions. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:59 PM PST I started investing about 7 months. I've done pretty well for myself so far but one thing I haven't done yet is take a loss on a stock. I'm not concerned about anything I'm holding right now. I'm trying to prepare myself for when a big correction happens or potentially a recession. I feel as though I've gotten the hang of selling for profits, or holding onto cash until a better buying opportunity comes. I have yet to panic sell even though I was holding aphria from $20 to 4, but that was more because I didn't believe the short report and not because I was afraid of taking a loss. Does anyone have tips on when they sell at a loss? What makes you pull the trigger? I feel as though because I haven't done it yet, I won't know how to do it when the time comes and all of my money will be tied into my investments for the duration of the correction. Which is okay but I would obviously rather sell at a loss and buy back in at bargain prices. I know there's no rule of thumb. I'm just asking what YOU do. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Stock Market Breadth Continues to Improve Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:08 AM PST Key Points
Visit https://www.brtechnicals.com/stock-market-breadth-continues-to-improve-2/ to read the blog with charts! Stock Market BreadthThe stock market as a whole is usually measured by one of the major averages such as the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, or Nasdaq Composite Index. Most people and investors use these to gauge market performance. When the S&P 500 has a positive day, they say "The market was up today." Analyzing market breadth goes deeper than the major averages, and looks at the individual parts that make up the index. With this analysis we can gauge how healthy the indices are, and determine if their health is strengthening or weakening. Right now, they are strengthening. Currently, the S&P 500 has 92% of stocks above their 50-day moving averages and 62% above their 200-day moving averages. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has 90% of stocks above their 50-day moving averages and 80% above their 200-day moving averages. Finally, the Nasdaq Composite has 92% of stocks above their 50-day moving averages and 61% above their 200-day moving averages. If this were in the middle of a bull market trend, these numbers might be worrying, but since we are coming off a 20% decline, these are great numbers to see. In a bull trend, the 50-day moving averages are generally above the 200-day moving averages. If we see 90% of stocks are this high, it wold be a sign of over exuberance, and the risk of a drop increases. However, the 200-day moving averages are generally higher right now, and a 60% mark is not a sign of exuberance. These numbers tell us that stocks, and the major averages, still have room to grow. Another one of my favorite breadth indicators is the Advance Decline Percent (ADP) Line. This line tracks the percentage of stocks that move in the same direction as the index on any given day. The percentage is given a positive number on an up day, or a negative number on a down day. In its raw form, the indicator is a very volatile line, and sometimes hard to read. This is why I use the cumulative function generate an easy to read line. Right now, the line is reaching new highs, and giving us a strong bullish signal for stocks. Notable BreakoutsQQQ Breaks Resistance and 200-Day Moving AverageQQQ has closed above its 200-day moving average, and broken a key level at $169. The Nasdaq-100 index has been a leader of the market for the past few years. Seeing continuing bullish price action is a great sign for the market as a whole. XLY Breaks Past Resistance LineLike QQQ, the consumer discretionary ETF has broken its January 2018 high, and is poised to continue higher. XLF Breaks Past ResistanceThe financial sector ETF has broken its resistance level, and is currently testing the 200-day moving average. The ETF is likely to continue higher as long as it stays above the blue resistance line, which is now considered a support line. XLE Breaks Past $64The energy sector is a tough field to play in with high volatility, and OPEC influencing prices so much. However, a strong energy sector is helping to push the major averages higher. XLRE Makes New All-Time HighsThis new sector is making new all-time highs. In doing so, it tells us that index performance is occurring across multiple economic sectors. ConclusionBreadth helps us understand the strength of the underlying trend. It is a great sign to see all of these breakouts across multiple sectors of the economy and markets. It tells us investors are willing to take on the risk of stocks, because they believe the economy is strong, and markets will continue to climb higher into the future. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:58 AM PST Anyone who has played The Tradedesk needs to take a good hard look at Telaria. Plays on the content side of the connected tv advertising world versus Tradedesk who plays on the advertiser side but both benefiting from the move to digital, and more specifically the move to 'connected tv'. TLRA trades at only 2.5x sales (vs 12x for TTD), they have more exposure to CTV (33% last qtr growing to over 50% this year, TTD is around 20-25% I think), the stock has not done much yet (aside from yesterday's 30% move), no one owns it yet, it has minimal Wall Street coverage, the new CEO did a great job on the call yesterday (that's all I really know about him) and CTV is the hottest space in digital advertising..... oh and TLRA is tight with HULU - who is considered the 'thought leader' in CTV. What sectors seem to best counterbalance the overall market? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:49 PM PST So, I've been doing some research as it's the time of year where I reallocate my portfolio and anyways, it seems to me like the Real Estate sector and the Utilities sector seem to be the two that counteract the movements of the overall market for the most part. Do you guys agree with this? Do you know of any other sectors that tend to counterbalance the overall market? I keep most of my holdings in VTI, but I like to have some things to counterbalance when the market is going down a little bit. [link] [comments] |
