Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:50 PM PST Over the past several days we've seen a number of story type posts, link posts, combination education/advertisement posts and offers of free giveaways. There are a lot of subs that welcome that content and can provide a good audience for it. We are not dedicated to that. We are about questions people have about their small businesses. Please respect our dedication to this topic. Most of the time these posts are made to many subs at the same time and they are heavily upvoted - easily enough to overwhelm the simple questions we are dedicated to. I believe that allowing these posts would fill the first page of /r/smallbusiness and in doing so make it just like every other sub. If you like story/link/educational posts and find them useful that's fine. There is nothing wrong with them and they can provide value. Please look at some of the subs in our sidebar that welcome them. You can subscribe to those subs as well as us and get your own personal mix of material that includes them. [link] [comments] |
Good tips or tricks for not letting your side small business affect your main job? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:49 PM PST Anyone have any good tips, tricks, routines that help differentiate their side small business from their 9 to 5pm. Background- own a small social sports business and it's what I'm passionate about. Work full time as an engineer and finding small business encroaching on my job more and more and I prioritise it more. Starting to affect results at work. Anyone got any pointers, tips, rules they follow? [link] [comments] |
Father in law owns a checking business, what banks work with his kind of business? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:58 PM PST It's your typical checking business, people give him checks, he gives them their money while taking a cut, then has his bank deposit the checks. Are there any banks around the US that work with business like this? He only works with a local one and is looking to expand [link] [comments] |
Thinking of selling hand made knives in TX Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:41 PM PST Hi everybody. Hopefully I'm asking in the right place. As the title says, I'm considering selling my hand made knives later this year but I have a few questions about the business aspect. 1 Would a sole proprietorship be safe for me, liabilities wise? 2 I'm confused by the hobby vs business distinction. I don't really want to be full time, as I am a student in college, and I haven't kept any of my receipts or a documented inventory of tools, materials, etc. If I need to start keeping books, what's the best way to keep it legal? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:30 PM PST I'm definitely at the point where i think a phone tree would be useful in my business, and i don't really care about the monthly fee. I just want to make sure it would be worth it for the time spent to build it out and make sure it works right. I'd also have to port my number and figure that out. So i really don't want to go through the hassle if people have had bad experiences. Would love to hear if anyone has experience with other companies or systems for a phone tree. Thanks! What is your policy about hourly employees and breaks, lunchtime ect? I'm in Missouri. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:30 PM PST My state doesn't require much for breaks for employees but I want to institute something reasonable. I was thinking for a full time employee working eight hours a day, two paid 15 minute breaks and an unpaid lunch, which they can choose the length of. Our schedule is flexible, so I don't worry about what time the arrive or leave. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:48 PM PST How do we go about reporting taxes? We are a small business (inc, s corp) with... No salaried employees. No benefits. Two ignorant CEOs (who don't know what to do) We are equal shareholders. We each made around 3500 dollars in 2018. How do we report? and Do I (as CEO responsible (acting as the entity)) need to send myself and my partner (who is my brother) a tax document? 1099/ etc? Or do we just report the income as individuals and separately? [link] [comments] |
I’m sure this has been asked before, but how did you guys learn business tax? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:45 PM PST Maybe I'm on the wrong subreddit, if you guys know a subreddit better for for this question let me know 🤙 do you guys do your own taxes or is it simpler just to hire someone? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:33 PM PST I have been burned by an employer that didn't value the people they have working for them. Corporate downsized, contracted out work, and got rid of the over paid. Unfortunately, I was one. I've gotten another job that doesn't hold very much value to me although the people I work with are great! All the twists in my life have finally encouraged me to really get serious about opening a business. But I have one problem... my creativity has hit an all time low. I have some ideas but I want to get into a creative zone and get some great inspiration! What helped get your creativity going? What resources are great for total rookie? [link] [comments] |
New Adult Business Struggling With Adult Category Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:13 PM PST I'm new to Reddit, bear with me if I seem naive to the culture. My new business is focused on a single, unique product for men. Some consider it an accessory (like jewelry) others for enhancement of sexual performance. Both are right, actually. My store is totally safe for work but my product is "adult" which puts me in league with unsavory businesses. Mainstream marketing is out of reach, even though Viagra and Cialis have been welcomed there. My brand is upscale, gentlemanly, and targets discerning men (or the women who love them) but I'm having a hard time finding inroads to my target demographic. I welcome advice. The store in question is King-Rings.com. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Food manufacturing business information Posted: 04 Feb 2019 08:07 PM PST Looking into starting up a business manufacturing and selling condiments, primarily hot sauce. Having a tough time getting solid information on what food safety regulations apply to a small food manufacturing business in my state. Any general points in the right direction would be appreciated! The launch of a new sustainable jewellery brand. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:15 PM PST Hi guys, I am currently a fashion business student in London, and I am working on my final year business plan, that is centred around the launch of a new sustainable jewellery brand. As a woman myself, I wanted to wear a piece of jewellery which is sustainable, simple and easy to carry. Therefore I am launching this jewellery brand. Because of this, I would really appreciate if you guys could take 2 minutes out of your time to answer a few questions relating to this topic: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=DQSIkWdsW0yxEjajBLZtrQAAAAAAAAAAAAZ__vdZxpVUQk9NT0o5NlkwV1lWVjRBQkhPUTFWMVlPRS4u. It would mean so much to me if I could have your honest input, not only to get a good grade but to potentially even launch this business in the future :). Thank you, Ilisha Bhandari [link] [comments] |
Advice/Tips for having a stockist? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 05:37 PM PST I have been selling homemade candles for about a year online and doing local pop ups & markets. A few people have suggested reaching out to some local businesses to see if they'd be interested in becoming a stockist for my candles. Mostly I'm just not sure how to approach pricing and how to negotiate to make sure it's fair. Any tips are greatly appreciated!! [link] [comments] |

S-corp questions to understand child support Posted: 04 Feb 2019 04:58 PM PST Hi all, I hope you can help. Throwaway just in case. My ex (let's call him Sam) has an S-corp and we are up for modification of child support. I do plan to meet with a tax attorney to help navigate this, but for my own understanding I was hoping someone could ELI5 on some of this before that consult. Here is example info for illustration. Sam and Sam's spouse (Jordan) have an S-Corp with Sam having 49% and Jordan 51% ownership. Sam receives a 1099 (150k) as a construction contractor, made out to the S-Corp name. Sam also receives a W2 through the S-Corp for 25k. Their business taxes claim $150k in assets, and Sam receives a $30k distribution on the K1 (Jordan getting a little more than that on that K1). They also paid more than 35k into pensions/retirement. Knowing there are a whole lot of other details involved I tried to leave out for brevity, is there anything I can glean from the examples provided? I just have no idea what gross income imputed could be. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 04:13 PM PST I am starting an online clothing store. I got basically everything figured out besides two things: 1) Taking good, white background pictures of my clothes that are all going to be the same "size" (depth of shoot, distance of item etc) 2) Shipping, returning, how much it costs and what not. Does anyone have any experience with Shopify, especially in Europe? Does it let you choose which carrier or how does it even work? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Thinking of doing peoples laundry for them Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:32 PM PST I'm in a dorm-like living situation at the moment (technically apartments but they're just for college students) and theres a laundry room on every floor. I was thinking of taking peoples clothes and washing and folding them for a price. Any advice for me? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:27 PM PST Hello! I am the office manager at a small music school. It is just me, the owner and one other teacher. Every once and awhile we give away a free lesson or wave the first lesson fee and more times than not it keeps people coming back. But sometimes I wonder if we do it too much and are loosing more than we should over it. How do you balance giving away things to keep people coming back and actually making money? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:09 PM PST I have a 43k instagram account about "interesting facts" with a nice engagement (approximately 10.000 likes per post, growing an average of 600 followers per day), and when i hit 100k, (in the next 3months) i would like to open an online store selling coffee mugs, calendars and t-shirts with my logo. I wanted to know where can i find enterprises who can print my logo on those things for a low price. I have no idea of how to open an online store, so if you guys can give me any advice i would be grateful! [link] [comments] |
Business Loan one partner with Excellent Credit one with bad credit advice. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 02:52 PM PST to make a long story short I'm wondering how this works. My business partner who owns a restaurant group of about seven restaurants and they do very well want to open a restaurant with me being 50-50 we are going to take out a loan for a large amount of money 800-900k but my credit is trash and I have no collateral but their credit is amazing and they have a lot of collateral they want my name to be on the loan as well. my credit sucks for one reason maxed out credit due to car problems/medical bills/ vet bills etc. I have always been behind the curve since I was 18 because i had a kid that young, but before this last year I was finally not living paycheck to paycheck until all these emergencies happened drained my savings and i had to max some cards. So my question is how will this affect the loan and our ability to get one? Will they see my credit score? I want to be transparent and have been thinking about telling them beforehand. I know how to run a restaurant, and I know (before anyone says anything) opening a restaurant is a bad investment, but they are established and my resume in this field is vast, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2019 02:30 PM PST I hope this is appropriate. I will promptly delete this if there's a FAQ answer to this. I'm just starting to work on my own housekeeping/cleaning service. I work alone for now, so my availability and services are limited by that. I'm mostly looking to cater to homes, vacation rentals, and offices. I've begun by listening myself on care.com, but I'm skeptical about how effective that will be. It seems you have to spend a lot of money to appear even remotely hirable on that site. And even then you have to rely on reviews, which I don't have any yet. Are business cards worth it? A FB page? Other social media? I don't know what would be the best method of advertising for my service. [link] [comments] |
Business owners, is my CPA giving me bad advice about filing as an S Corp? Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:47 AM PST Looking for second opinions if my CPA is giving me advice that is actually in my best interest...
More context: After my first full year in business with $40k in revenue (marketing consulting, making plans to ramp up that income significantly this year), I found this CPA to do my sole prop taxes. I've done my own taxes for the last decade, paid quarterly taxes, keep meticulous records, and am the type who reads IRS documentation. I'm highly a highly skeptical person and seen too much marketing that preys on the fears/inexperience of small business owners. Her advice makes more sense for the future, if I was looking to hire (definitely not this year) and my income spikes dramatically... So trying to make the choice about this s corp filing.

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 02:01 PM PST What do you do to solve that problem? Is it such a big pain point to where you have to have dedicated HR/resume reviewers to do the job of sifting/picking out the resumes that would be the most ideal candidates for your job posting? I used to work at a startup where we would get hundreds of resumes a day. Unfortunately, we didn't have the man-power to get through all of them so it would sometimes take up to 2-3 weeks to get back to a candidate (I know, not the best thing to do). And I was wondering if others here have similar pain points. What have you done to deal with the issue? [link] [comments] |
Looking for insights into growing website reach. Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:08 PM PST Hello everyone, I started a hardwood floor refinishing company in March of 2018. I service 50 miles around where I live at a standard price and have this information on my website and google listing. The problem I'm having is when I search for my type of business in certain cities near me, even cities that border my town, my listing is no where to be seen. Can anyone offer advice on growing my reach into the areas surrounding the town that I live in? I currently get most of my work from Home Advisor and that is just not a sustainable source of jobs. I currently have 15 5 star reviews and listed every town I work in on my google listing. Thanks in advance for any advice. [link] [comments] |
