Final student loan payment was paid today! Student Loans

Final student loan payment was paid today!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:35 AM PST

My wife had around $50,000 in student loan debt. (Master's degree.)

We've been married four years, and we've attacked them. We paid nearly $20k down last year.

Today, we made a $2100 final payment, which will be applied on Monday (the next business day).

So, so happy! We're finally gonna start saving for a house and start saving for our little one's college fund! ;)

    Finally done....We’re free!!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:42 PM PST

We just made the final payment on my wife's student loans today. What started out as a $90,000+ monster 9 years ago at the infancy of our careers is finally gone. We spent a few years paying the minimum when it was all we could afford, to paying $1,500+ extra per month when we had some extra money, and back to minimums for the last couple years while we bought a house and started a family. What finally put us over the finish line was a large bonus at my job. Looking forward to contributing to our kid's 529 accounts so they won't have to live through this hell in 20 years. Oh, and maybe I'll upgrade my 15 year old beater car. Keep your heads up, there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

MEFA Loans and Off-Campus Housing at UMASS Amherst

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:51 PM PST

Hi All, I'm sort of in a sticky situation. I am currently attending UMASS Amherst. I got a last minute offer to live off-campus next year, but will only be able to do so if I can use the MEFA loans I took out to pay for the house rent. The MEFA website says that they allows their loans to pay for off-campus rent, but only if the student's college allows it (MEFA loans are payed through the college to the recipient). I can't find any information on UMASS's website concerning their MEFA policy, and UMASS administrative services aren't reachable until Monday morning. Can anyone help me out and tell me if they've received MEFA loans to pay for off-campus housing at UMASS, or know of someone who does. I'm in a real time-crunch, and any information is appreciated. Thanks!

Foreign Student Loan Exception and IBR

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:55 PM PST

I have a teaching certificate and plan on teaching at international schools for my career. I plan on taking advantage of the foreign exception for not taxable income so my monthly payment will be zero. I currently have my loans in forbearance where they have been for the past couple years, my forbearance runs out in September. My question is will my monthly payment be zero right away or is calculated based on the previous years tax returns so I will have to pay some till my taxes are zero completely after working at international schools for a year? Thanks.

I'm so desperate to pay off my loans that I've become a sugar baby.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:30 AM PST

I am currently a student. My parents are not in my life so I have to pay for everything. I calculated that I will be 49.5k in debt by June 2020 (6 months after I graduate). I think about my debt multiple times per day... it's like a giant weight on my shoulders. At the beginning of the month, I joined a sugar daddy website and have been seeing a couple of men in the area. I used the first few payments to invest in myself so I can look presentable to these men (my closet previously consisted of Adidas sweatpants LOL) as well as take care of some necessary things (medical bills, etc.). Since taking care of that, I've been paying off my loans. This month alone I eliminated 8.9% of this debt, so now I am projecting to be around approx. 45k in debt by graduation.

Has anybody else done something like this? How has it worked out for you?

    Advice Needed!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:01 PM PST

So my dream school hasn't offered me enough in terms of aid. My cost of attendance is about $64,000 a year which is more than what my parents make. Even if I split the cost 50/50 with my parents I'll be paying $128,000 for school, this isn't even taking into account the interest that would accumulate over time. Fordham (the school) is in a great area for a major in finance (my chosen major) and I am attempting to take that into account as well. My parents are telling me that if I want to attend Fordham, I can. However, I don't wish to burden them financially. Would attempting to make this work be a good decision?

Is anyone else having trouble with the ECSI Heartland website?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:20 PM PST

I'm still in a grace period but I want to pay off my loans in their entirety instead of waiting for the gp to end and paying them off in small amounts. I entered all my info and can't pay them because it won't let continue to the "review and submit" screen. I think it may be because it says that I owe 0 so far bc of the grace period?

I need some help. 7k in unclaimed tuition.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:17 PM PST

I never finished school, I want to go back. I went for 3 years one is study abroad and I took private language courses since then and had some work experience.

I want to get my degree.

I made mistakes not being hands own about my loans, letting others handle it and now I owe my old school 7k Before I can apply to new schools (transcripts) or even go back to that one I have to pay them back, but I'm still on repayment for my loans.

After 2 years I have 2k saved up, I'm getting older and can't help feeling like I'm losing time.

I have no idea what to do. Working to pay off that 7k doesn't seem plausible, it's a very tiny very competitive market to find a job where I am staying and moving will demolish my "savings" in a month.

I was making alot more before but due to some medical expenses and having to move back home it's gone.

My idea was to get a loan to pay off that 7k, then get a private student loan when I can enroll, covering that.

There's a program at my pervious school that I can apply for that costs 3k for 6 months as many classes as you can handle. I was thinking I could do that? I have about 40-50 credits.. And you need 120 to graduate.

    What should I do?

Advice on student loan payment strategy needed

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:07 AM PST

I have ~$75,000 in federal student loans that I consolidated at 5.6%APR. I am currently paying that down monthly. I've recently gotten a side job, in which I'll clear about $700 per month that I want to put all towards my student loans, in addition to my current monthly payment.

I have credit cards with >$20,000 limits that are offering 0%APR on balance transfers for 14 months. There is a 3% balance transfer fee. Would it be smart to use a balance transfer for ~$10,000 to reduce my student loans to $65,000, and throw that $700 to pay off the balance transfer within the 14 month 0%APR period while making my current loan payments on the $65,000, or should I just keep it simple and throw the extra $700 to the current $75,000 total?

Edit: I have no issues making my current payment and I am very disciplined when it comes to spending. I recently paid off a 15 month 0%APR balance transfer of $22,000 in which I made payments of $1400-$1900/mo, so I am confident that I'll get the $10,000 paid off within the 14 months.

    Fedloan REPAYE Annual Recertification

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:41 PM PST

    Hi!

I am on REPAYE and started to pay my new monthly amount in June 2018. It took like 3 months to switch and start paying(!).

    • Does that mean I need to recertify with my new income before June 2019?

    • If so, would May 19 be a safe date?

    • Will they contact me to remind me?

    • Do they automatically get my 2018 tax return when I file it, then change the payment automatically right away?

    • If not, can I do this all online?

Not sure if my income went up or down until I get my TR.

    Thanks so much

Can I refinance my loans!? Advice

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:41 PM PST

So I graduated from school in August and just got a great paying job making ~55k before taxes. I owe around $45k in Sallie Mae loans and want to refinance them through Earnest or SoFi. However, my credit score is shit to put it nicely. I made some bad choices with credit cards that I'm living with those consequences now. My FICO credit score in 1/19 was 614. Obviously I would need a co-signer to get these loans refinanced.

My fiancé is willing to co-sign for my loans if I think we could get approved with a decent rate. His credit score was at 750 when he bought his car around 6 months ago (we have not checked it again since, but he has not missed any payments of anything so it should be similar if not better). He makes ~36k before taxes.

So my question is do you think we could get my loans approved to be refinanced or is it not worth our time applying until my credit score goes up?

This is going to sound stupid

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:32 PM PST

    Hey folks,

I'm posting on behalf of someone I know but basically he is a doctor with 600k of student loans.

Insane, I know. He has been working for about 2-3 years now and making 100k/year. His total student loan was actually 500k when he first started working but the interest (even with the 2k+ monthly payments) has ballooned it up to 600k.

He has *not* consolidated his student loans.

His main fear is that if he consolidates his student loans, in the event the student loan market crashes and the gov't is forced to forgive his loan as a result, his loan will not be forgiven because it is consolidated with another institute that is not gov't-affiliated (e.g. bank).

In my mind it's a plausible outcome but at the same time:

    • a) let's say the student loan market crashes and you have a consolidated loan, wouldn't it be ridiculous if the institute that consolidated your loan doesn't forgive you? Since they do not have to pay the forgiven loan anymore?
    • b) actually, how plausible is this? Is it ridiculous to rack up 100k+ every 2-3 years counting on this to happen?

I'm honestly pretty worried about the responses haha, please be gentle but also straight up.

Also we are in the US.

    Need Advice

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:12 PM PST

I currently have completed my first year of "non self employment". I work for a great non-profit and make around $37500 a year before taxes.

I have about $56k in student loan debt. Over the past few years I didnt owe anything as my net income was only around 12k a year from being self employed.

I just got a letter stating that I owe 2k , even though I never got any correspondence showing that it was time to redo my IBR. I know it's my fault but honestly I just forgot to re=do it. I really can only budget around $100-150 a month right now towards those loan costs.(IBR shows that payment would be between $240-600 a month.
I have a car payment that I cannot get out of, as well as a house payment that is a blessing since it's way lower than rent would be anywhere in my city.

Just looking for advice on how you would tackle this debt. Obiously I need a lower payment for the time being but I do want to pay this off and get it out of my life.

    Thank you in advance

    M

Seeking advice. Wife ~5 years into PSFL / IBR, file jointly or separately?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 10:59 AM PST

My wife has about $72K in loans and is ~5 years into PSLF (depending on which loan, some have 67 of qualified payments, some 43... another unclear issue). I have a relatively high income at ~$300K and am not in PSLF and have no student loan debt. We have two kids.

Over the past couple of years, we've filed separately which has resulted in a $0/month payment for her. On balance that seemed to be a wise decision, however, when running the difference in refunds this year, the delta between married filing separately and jointly is staggering, leading me to believe it may make sense to switch up our approach.

Our circumstance is not unlike that covered in this post (https://www.biglawinvestor.com/pslf-married-filing-separately/)), yet still, I cannot for the life of me confidently determine which course of action is most financially efficient for our family.

Have any of you found yourselves in a similar scenario? Any advice out there on how best to approach?

Would you use a portal that paid all your student loans instead of paying multiple providers? Would a loan payment program that allowed anyone to pay your loans(family/friends) anonymously be beneficial for you?

    Interest Capitalization - MyFedLoan

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:16 AM PST

    Hi,

Mom has loans under myfedloan, she's on IBR for PSLF. She's had then for years and makes the monthly payment. Logged in today (I make payments of the PLUS loans) and saw there's been interest capitalization. The details section says this could happen if loans have come out of deferment or forbearance, or if entering repayment. None of these things have happened recently... all she's done recently is sent in the recertification for PSLF

    International Student Loan Financing Options

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:59 AM PST

Hello. I am currently applying to grad schools in Canada and Germany, but the schools don't have sufficient scholarships to cover the full tuition (USD 20-30K). Tried looking into Prodigy Finance, but they do not support Ethiopian nationals (me). Does anyone know of other companies that provide loans to international students that wont be learning in American schools? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
