    New to Management advice

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:00 AM PST

I recently was promoted from team lead to manager. I have working at my company for a few years now. On my team there is a person who will be working as a team lead. He is always been very ambiguous and part of me has felt he was internally upset I landed this role. That bring said most of the team goes to him now for advice given the fact i was on a different section of the department. I do notice sometimes hes a bit pushy with his idea. This is all fairly new and I'm still in transition but I want to embrace his enthusiasms but at the same time draw boundaries which he knows hes crossed before w our original manager

    1) any advice on how to rein in the horse here.

    2) how would you define team lead vs manager

    3) any thought would be appreciated. Possibly good reads. Management is new to me so any insights is welcomed.

Hes definitely motivated person and smart but I know hes.ambigious in his own right. I just dont want any toe stepping. So my first goal is to try to define what I expect from him. Hes more knowledgable on my teams daily ins and outs since hes been there for awhile.

Business Start Up - Clean Out/Clean Up Crew - Willing to Trade Expertise

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:33 PM PST

To begin, I managed the day to day operations at a small transportation company, specifically semi trucks, for about 7-8 years and still manage the company's financials from home. I basically pay the bills, make sure the day to day manager has money to make the business function properly for the week, and balance the checking account. It's something my dad started while I was in school and I took over in 2008 when I graduated. It has had its up and downs but I can't complain, I put about two hours a week into it and it pays almost all our bills.

Late 2015, I noticed I was playing on my phone far more than I was actually working. My dad raised my brother and I doing construction and home remodeling. I asked him to teach me because I was no longer needed at the trucking company on a regular basis. Fast forward about 3 years and here we are building pole barns, remodeling/flipping homes, and doing almost everything you could do under a residential roof five days a week. He's 62 years old and has really dropped out of the work lineup for us as of late. He is suppose to cap some windows tomorrow but we'll see if it really happens. He deserves a nice retirement. I like him being able to come and go and not worry about the jobs. I owe him a lot.

Another business venture I have been reading about is working with banks and homeowners and cleaning out repossessed homes. This led me to researching crime set cleanup (murder, suicide, drugs, etc). I'm not even sure what the proper name of the profession is called. However, I'm interested.

Why I am posting here is because I want to expand myself. I want to start a clean out/clean up business but I know little of how to get started. Of course I am going to need a vendors' license, insurance, bond, etc. but I am not too sure how I could get my foot in the door quickly. Someone showing me would really expedite the process. I did do some legwork with my research and I spoke to my bank today about how they went about their repossessed homes and getting them ready for resale. They referred me to a third party that handles all their properties and they hire small companies for their property needs throughout the country. I do understand that the clean out and crime clean up may be two separate entities but I am willing to learn the ins and outs of both.

What I am asking of you is information. Do you or anyone you know have a business or work at a business like described and know how I should go about my start up? If there is anyone out there, far enough to where we are not competing against each other, I would love to trade the skills I've learned through working in the two fields that I have the last 12 years. I know the ins and outs of the transportation company albeit some rust that may come with being away from the office the last few days. I can wire an entire house up in a few days, install windows, build barns, roof, install any flooring, minor plumbing, and would be able to help or exchange any information I have for yours.

Again, maybe a long shot to find someone like me out there that would be willing to trade some info to gain some info but I like to learn and I would be thrilled to help someone educate themselves in a new business venture as I would be even more thrilled to learn something new.

Thank you for reading my post!!

Subsidies, Business Models, and Cost of Work; Is a health food business market accurate?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:58 AM PST

My questions at the bottom, bolded if you don't want to read the set-up. This is mostly me being curious. I don't have a burning desire to start a health/food related business. I'm just looking for the two sides of the argument here.

I work with a lot of CleanTech start-ups at an Accelerator and in-turn I talk with a lot of people who aren't in industries I'm interested in, but still I find their business model interesting. Because this often puts me in the realm of sustainability, I hear "food is medicine" more than I would guess the usual suit does. Farming has, for the history of agriculture, not been particularly lucrative. Commercial farms have been increasing their revenue through market share and technologically advanced disruption: sub-surface drip irrigation, drone-targeted pesticide spraying, etc.

If we're starting to consider food as medicine, in theory it means that a daily salad ahead of problems does more to reduce governmental healthcare costs than a pharmaceutical companies product. But there's no way you can make a health-food-as-medicine box company pencil given the required supply chains and seasonal offering changes required.

My question: Is the pricing of health-food, assuming it has long-term medical benefits being priced correctly by the market? Can it ever be given the way people work - i.e. thinking about tomorrow, not 10 years from now?

Just curious. I don't really have any agenda here.

Looking for a few active professionals to test our product.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:54 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

We have been developing a sock that's equal parts dress and performance. It's designed to be versatile, to look and perform great in any situation, be it the office or the gym.

We have a few of our final prototypes and are looking for a few (3) people to test them out.

Do you bike to work, or head straight to the gym after your workday? Send me a quick note and I'll try and send you a pair.

    Thanks so much. -Jonas
