After a few years of public accounting?

I got my 4th exam score. (A story)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:07 PM PST

It was weird waiting for my 4th exam score, just waiting for the result, studying technically done, but maybe not. I started this endeavour to get my CPA back in 2016. I had the education credits and had been working as a consultant at a CPA firm with the understanding that I get my degree and then my CPA. I started using Gleim at first, and signed up for FAR and REG. I ended up taking a lot longer than I should have to study for REG. Got bogged down a lot. Kept getting overwhelmed at the massive amount of material I was supposed to go through and have on lock. I would sit on topics too long if I felt like I didnt understand it properly. Got behind on the schedule, kept pushing my target date. Finally took the exam. Failed, 70. Busy season was around the corner and rushed through FAR. Had to take it before the NTS expired. I got through maybe half the material before sitting for the exam. Failed. 72. 2016 was a wash, nothing to show for it. Very discouraging.

2017 could have been a similar story, retook REG using Wiley. I took too long to study and passed end of 2017 . 75. Scrambled to take audit. But could not get ready before busy season kicked in. Studied half the material before tax season and half after tax season, moving fast, couldnt let a NTS expire for nothing. Barely passed again mid 2018. 75.

Having 2 down, I felt I could take another run at FAR, didnt want it to be the last exam standing between me and my license. Studied my ass of the rest of 2018 and took it late in the year, felt really bad walking out of the exam, but received a credit with a score of 79.

On BEC I was so ready to be done. It was so hard to study, I was so sick of it. But being so close to being done I was not going to sit back and give this up. REG was set to expire June of 2019. And I had to sit for this by the end of January which fit nicely with getting it done before busy tax season kicked in for real. So I took it Jan 22nd. And when I walked out, I felt good. But as I waitied for Feb 26th release window I talked myself into believing I had failed. I was emotionally ready for disappointment. There was no way I would be done with this. I considered that you can only take one section once a quarter at the most, so i was going to have to take BEC at some point before June, but after April so I wouldnt lose REG credit. Would I study during tax season? All these things ran through my head.

I got an 85. I am finally done and it is such a relief. I can't believe it happened. My wife and kid are out of town so it was just me sitting on the couch, utterly stunned, staring at the screen after hitting refresh dozens of times. I broke down crying. I dont cry, I cant remember the last time I cried or why I did. But I did, I broke down. Big, hot tears of relief. I envisioned my self doing a tigerwoods air punch or a shout of excitement, a woop. But I didnt. I just sat there and cried for a bit.

This week has been great. Whole firm congratulated me on my pass. Taking me out to lunch tomorrow. I have been flying high. Got my application submitted to the state, so just waiting now.

This was just a cathartic post for me, thanks for reading.

What would you do if you were me? (depressed and suicidal)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:06 PM PST

Hi guys so i'm really depressed at the moment and suicidal

I have been unemployed for 5 months now and can't get a job.

    Here is my background

    1. Graduated in 2016 (didn't apply for grad programs or anything because i was immature/stupid etc)
    2. Worked 12 months at a local small CPA firm (horrible experience, hot office, no one there my age terrible, same thing everyday)
    3. Decided to quit
    4. Few months later worked at a better CPA firm
    5. Started getting bullied by senior
    6. After 6 months was fired due to "poor attitude" even though not once was i ever sat down with and told i was doing X or Y wrong

Now i can't get a job. I feel so depressed. My self esteem is shot and I have no confidence. I've applied for 60+ jobs and have had many interviews even getting to second round of interviews but no offer. All the feedback i have had has been positive.

I want to get into management accounting or FP&A what would you do if you were me?

I've been applying for entry level industry roles (AP/AR etc)

    1) Somehow try and get back into tax accounting but this time try and stick at it for a few years and look for management
accounting/analysis type opportunities within the firm

    2) Keep applying for entry level industry roles (AP/AR, accounts/admin etc) even though i keep getting rejected because i haven no experience in these areas

    3) Apply for graduate audit roles - work in audit for a while then move on?

What should i do'? should i end it

Fox hit with $179m (including $128m in punitive damages) judgment over shady bookkeeping on "Bones"

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:13 PM PST

I'm an intern and these 1065's and 1120S's are hella confusing can someone help explain this logic to me?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:12 PM PST

I'm assuming every firm does things relatively the same way, who the hell knows I'm new to this. Anyways when doing one of these flow-through returns, what in the hell do all of these "UNADJ 12/31/2018, AJE, ADJ 12/31/2018" things do exactly? I know the UNADJ 12/31/2018 column has the client's numbers from their financials. I know AJE's are to adjust their books, and the last column is the adjusted number. And then from that adjusted number we sometimes have an FJE to convert it into a tax number.

    2 questions:

    1. Why do we have to adjust the client's books? Is it just for when their books are wrong? (How do we know if they're wrong, where are the check figures?) I was told by a senior manager in a very quick 30 second explanation before they ran off, that I need to do AJE's to record asset acquisitions and disposals. What is the logic here? Because these clients I'm working on have accountants doing their books so the logic of all this is just not clicking with me yet at all. And I have a big S Corp I have to do tomorrow.

2.I'm so fucking tired from these 12 hour days I forgot my second question

    Seriously Wiley?

    Seriously Wiley?

Not a huge issue, but it's 2019. I thought we'd graduated from terms like "live-in-companion" when referring to same-sex relationships. /facepalm

Does anyone else's college use Handshake for applying to internships and interviews. Website is a total POS. Anyways I applied for EY emerging leader program yesterday and also an interview. Nobody ever showed up today and when I went to the school Careers office they were like "we have no clue". I pay way to much for college for this kinda shit.

Tips to stay organized and be efficient

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:40 PM PST

    Hello all,

So this is my first tax season with multiple clients, and more responsibility, and was wondering what it is that everyone does to try and stay organized.

I know becoming overwhelmed may be an inevitability during tax season, but maybe there are some programs or good practices that can make things a bit easier.

How many years of audit experience is considered "sufficient" and why?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:02 PM PST

Any accountants here that have transitioned to financial planning/advising?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:31 PM PST

I was wondering... I'm planning on getting my CPA and doing tax in public for a few years, and I want to know if it's possible to transition to financial planning with this background.
