Its just hit me that I'm finally free Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:12 PM PST I quit my big 4 auditing 2 weeks ago and started a new role yesterday. One of my new coworkers mentioned they stayed "pretty late" yesterday Their definition of "pretty late" was 6:30pm. Freedom awaits you all. [link] [comments]

6+ years to pass the CPA exam! Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:56 AM PST It's official. I passed the CPA. It took me 6 and half years, and thousands of dollars. My first attempt was in 2012! I don't even work in Public Accounting anymore, but I will be a CPA. I'm both ashamed at how long it took and proud of the determination to see it through. I started at a CPA firm in July of 2012 – my first exam bomb occurred a few weeks later in August of that year. I did my best during 2013, but really struggled to balance studying with busy seasons and work travel. I grew increasingly frustrated with the exams and public accounting, making only a few half assed attempts in 2014 and 2015. In 2015, I left the CPA firm and moved into industry. I made one honest effort attempt, earning a 71 in late 2016. Having failed that, I decided it was do-or-die time. I put down the cash to purchase Becker - and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing for a year. With only 6 months of Becker left in December 2017, I finally focused – and spent 2018 studying and passing. I'm not even in Public accounting anymore, and not sure what value it will provide, but I couldn't give up. I had to prove I could do it. I'm so relieved to be done. Those exams hung over my head for years. Even when I wasn't actively studying, I felt guilt. I didn't' fully commit to other aspects of my life because the exams took so much time from me. But it's now done. I realize that some may think I don't deserve the title. I've definitely seen folks on here and elsewhere that think that you don't deserve the letters if you needed that many attempts. Perhaps, but I hope some people can appreciate the steadfast determination and absolutism that it took to end up where I am today. Perhaps. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:40 AM PST Ah yes, it's been two years since I muttered these words and openly welcomed all of you sad bois to trample on my mildly positive outlook on working in public accounting. Well folks, I'm still in public, still digging it, and I'm still not the only one who isn't living a miserable existence doing so. Figured I'm overdue for another onslaught of comments explaining why I'm objectively wrong and should be miserable in the white-collared slavery prison that is public accounting - so give me your best. Let's try and step up our game this time. Comments saying "just wait bro, u be sad soon", or "sounds like a first year" (2senior4me), or anything referencing my intake of kool-aid is old news - two years old to be exact, so step your game up. For those not already bitter and experiencing endless self-loathing over the career you've chosen, let me reiterate my message from two years prior: I love this subreddit, but it's flooded with negativity. Public accounting, while sometimes subject to luck, can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for some. You are more in control of the type of experience you have than people inside and outside of the industry will lead on. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:13 PM PST I goofed up my internship last summer and was released without a full time offer. I kept the internship on my resume, but clearly I hadn't recieved a full time offer, and I feel like that fact was a scarlet letter for me as I went through recruiting again during the fall season looking for full time positions, barely getting any consideration. I still want to find something in public, if I can. I'm just feeling really discouraged and wondering if anyone on here was/is in a similar position. Any advice is greatly appreciated [link] [comments]
Have you ever started hating your profession, not just your current job? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:47 PM PST I live in a "different" country so things work different here. I started as an accounting clerk at 18 until 20, saw it as a menial job and a stepping stone (studying my accounting degree at night). At 20 I got into Big 4 and there were already people my age promoted as Highest-tier Staff. Got this obsession of making it to manager. I studied a lot, gained a fuckton of experience, had great reviews. Got promoted to Highest tier Staff at 21. At 22 I got told I wasn't going to get promoted to Senior no matter how good I was, my specific local firm policy was to wait at least 3 years between each promotion. Another Big 4 hired me as a Senior. At 23 I realized I hated Big 4 and that I didn't want to make it to Manager, that it was just a machine and everyone was replaceable, even Partners. I realized my office's main Partner was the bitch of a bigger regional Partner, and that Partner was the bitch of another Partner, and so on. I realized the stress and hours got bigger as you got promoted. Now at 24 I got this "Internal Audit Senior" job and it's just menial stuff. I can't complain about the pay, but my mind isn't getting stimulated anymore. I feel like I don't even want more money or to accumulate wealth. I feel like I'm starting to hate my career. What I really like is music and art, I do that as a hobby, got enough time for it, it's the only thing keeping me somewhat sane. Otherwise I hate my co-workers and my job. My shrink says I'm legit crazy too, not making that shit up, told me I should be instantly hospitalized but there's no 5150 where I live, so I don't comply with that. All the networking bullshit, having to kiss the ass of your boss, pretending to like your co-workers, IFRS getting more retarded year after year, I feel like this shit can turn a fragile mind crazy, other ex-Big 4 people have told me the same thing. Am I just a prick/asshole or have you ever felt the same? Like, I will soon turn 25 and I feel like I haven't enjoyed my youth, I've worked full time since I've been 18 and I have never stopped. I've accomplished shit and it doesn't make me feel any happier. I genuinely miss my first year as a Big 4 Staff, everything was sunshine and rainbows in my head. I feel like Big 4 accelerated my decent into a soulless prick. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:12 PM PST I sent an email to the wrong partner and another partner emailed me back to point it out, so I can never show my face at the office again. I think my two options are finding a new job or committing seppuku, and I figured I should try the first before the second. Kind regards. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:56 AM PST Today is the day! I am leaving public accounting after 7 years to fulfill my dream job of becoming a fireman! Currently work for a really successful and really small real estate, individual tax firm with an even smaller forensic accounting practice! About 20 people. I work in the forensic practice directly for one of the partners. Primarily deal with marital litigation. I am a CPA and a CVA and have my masters in accounting ( i needed the credits i was a criminal justice major in college) Live in a large city in the northeast, took the test almost 3 years ago and found out last night i am to show up in 2 weeks at the academy to start. I am so excited and nervous to leave right as tax season is starting to pick up. Going to talk to my boss when he gets back from a meeting. He has no idea this is happening. wish me luck! Edit: Just got out! went really well! i think because im leaving accounting in general it helped him be ok with it! Edit 2 : was already asked if i could help out on weekends...no Edit 3: Now was just asked if i could hire my replacement and if i knew anyone who is looking [link] [comments]
For those who quit public after 1 year Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:14 PM PST What sort of position did you go into? A quick job search in my area (metro Detroit) and i didn't see a whole of positions - most were either very entry level (bachelors in accounting with $45k starting) or manager level (5+ yrs. experience). Just curious to hear where others went. I'm currently B4 Audit and have passed all the CPAs [link] [comments]

[CAN] CPA Canada - ONP Research email Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:09 PM PST Has anybody else received an email from Sylvetre & Co regarding market research? They're offering $150 to take their survey. The email is well written, by a company that does exist (and does what they say they do if you were to google them). Given the information in the email, there are a lot of points you can research to check their validity, but I'm forever skeptic of these. Anybody get this and can vouch one way or another? I can copy the email if anybody wants, I don't know if there's any harm in that. [link] [comments]

CPA Exam Study Duration (While in School) Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:42 PM PST I am going to be studying for the CPA while in my final year of college. I don't expect to be super focused on classes, but I know i will hate myself if I just spend all my time on the CPA, so I will putting at least a decent amount of time as a student as well. For those of you who were in college (either graduate or undergrad programs), how much time did you study for each test? If you took the CPA while working (full or part time), I'd also appreciate any insight on how long you spent studying. Thanks in advance, and I hope busy season hasn't killed you yet!
