LPT: Seniors planning on going into the CPA immediately, apply (and get rejected) now!

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:16 PM PST

Some of the best advice I got in regard to the CPA program was given by a college professor my final semester. He told me to apply for the CPA exam now and get rejected. Here's how it works. The CPA application process takes time; sometimes five to eight weeks in Texas at the time. And in May there will be a lot of applications flying around. In January/February/March, not so much. Especially in my case I was concerned because I was using 3 different schools for credits to qualify so if any of the credits had been rejected, I would have had to apply for more classes. Rejection responses and follow ups don't go to the back of the line and only require review for the specific reasons you were rejected.

So in February, I got my packet filled out, did my fingerprints at my leisure, got copies of all my transcripts, my back ground check, my photo and sent the packet off to my state licensing board. About 5 weeks later in April I got a rejection letter than referenced a code I could refer to when supplying the missing data. I confirmed that the only thing I was missing was 2 credits I was currently taking (if not I would have delayed graduation or tried to take a May mini-mester). There were no extra fees other than the cost of one more letter down there with my final transcript.

Then when I graduated I got my school to send new copy of my final transcript to the state board referencing that rejection. I graduated May 15th and started a CPA review course on May 16th. It took a week for my school to finalize grades and issue final transcripts. Less than 2 weeks later on June 2nd I was notified that I was approved to sit the exams. On the 9th I got my approval to start scheduling exams. On the 11th I got my NTS coupon. By that time summer slots were already starting to be fully booked (and I live in an area with 3 exam centers). I finished my first review class June 27th and took my first exam July 2nd.

If I had waited until I graduated to apply it could have easily been July before I got approved and I might have ended up having to take it in an entirely different window.

How many of you work for firms or companies that are shit shows?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:19 PM PST

I'm still early in my career and have only worked for a few smaller firms, but it feels like we're always fucking up and are unorganized.

It just never ends. It feels like as soon as we think we fix something we get a notice from another client or the irs about something that needs to be changed.

I guess I don't know what's considered normal. It just feels like we constantly have to go back and make adjustments or find shit that was done inconsistently due to turnover.

I don't know i just need to vent. It feels like this shit never ends. There's always something that blows up in your face. Then you spend forever trying to figure out what the last guy was trying to do.

    Contracting question

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:28 PM PST

Long story short, I will be laid off from my Sr Staff Accountant role at a large F500 in the next few months with severance. I was offered a "lead" role in IC but I told them I'm ready to move on, which is definitely true. I have no desire to stay in a permanent role with them.

Now I'm wondering if I can instead turn this into a short term contractor relationship after my last day of employment. I'd say up to 4 months after my last day. They are in a position of need right now, as it's a shit show. Key staff have been let go over the past few months and they are having a tough time getting up to speed with newer and lower quality staff. I'm one of the few remaining "legacy" staff from the old old business, 2 mergers ago, and that ups my value quite a bit in their eyes.

Has anyone here had a similar situation and could you provide advice? I'm currently a Sr Staff Accountant with CPA and my salary translates to about $32/hour. I figure if I take that plus the company's cost savings of not having to pay benefits and payroll taxes plus some percentage for a "raise" that I could end up at a fair hourly rate.

    Thanks!

I was wondering if anyone knew why the USA has not moved to using IFRS.

And if you think they will ever move from GAAP to IFRS?

Good resources to learn automation and Alteryx for accounting?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 07:32 PM PST

I just landed an internship this summer as a Financial Accounting and Reporting intern at a Fortune 150 company. I'm beyond excited, and they asked me in my interview if I had any interest in using VBA and Alteryx for side projects while I am there. I have a few months until I start, and if I can pry some free time away from the clutches of intermediate II, I would love to get a head start on those applications. I have used VBA and a little bit of UiPath in my coursework and I have had to troubleshoot VBA macros in my job occasionally, but I'm no wizard at it. Just wondering if you all have any resources that you've used to get better at automating spreadsheets/repetitive tasks, and also any advice on what parts of Alteryx are most useful for accountants?

Also Financial Accounting and Reporting is a mouthful, does anyone just call it FA&R like FP&A, or just FAR like the CPA exam?

    Senior Raises

    Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:38 PM PST

What % are the raises as an audit senior (S1-S2 or S2-S3) at a top 10 firm? Same % as an when an associate just a little higher base? For comparative purposes lets assume A1-A2 was 5%.
