Dear Interns/New Staff: You're doing fine.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:13 PM PST

If you're working in an office or on a job where you're getting along with your team, your senior likes you, you're getting good feedback and everything seems right with the world: Congrats, you won the lottery.

Being stressed or worried is totally normal.

Not knowing what you're doing but plugging through it all is totally normal.

Being tossed something at 8 AM and looking up at the clock at 8 PM realizing you spent all day and you haven't even finished reviewing the prior year's work let alone understand it...is totally normal.

    Here's some tips:

Is there a better way to do this? A time-saving Excel hack? Develop the idea at home and ask for five minutes of your senior's time to show them. They might blow you off, but don't let that discourage you.

Is someone around you stressed out? Reach out, ask if there's something you can do to help. That act of kindness might make your first six figure job in industry happen.

Do you feel like nobody likes you? They probably think you don't like them. Smile more. Crack a joke. Compliment someone's tie. Etc.

"I want to ace my PR. Do you have five minutes to clue me in on what I can do to get there?" sounds a lot better and is the same question as "I feel like you don't like me, am I doing something wrong? What can I do to get better?"

You should know who the A players are. Stick with them. Sometimes they're the cool kids, sometimes they're not. Be impressed with their cool discoveries. Show them yours.

If you're freaking out, you're doing fine.

When the Big 3 makes fun of KPMG

Public accounting will teach you not to give a shit about what others think of you, including your boss, or make you a paranoid wreck in the process. There is no in-between.

<Partner chews associate out for something completely out of his/her control>

Associate to senior: "Partner is so mad at me! I'm not even the one who messed up!"

Senior: "Eh. Don't take it personally."

Associate: "How the hell not? Who just goes around chewing people out?"

Senior: "Welcome to public accounting, friend. Now where are you with those financial statements I emailed you about?"

New audit staff here. Had a mental breakdown in front of my team yesterday, sobbing and all that. I guess all the stress got to me. They were all so great and comforting but I'm worried about how this looks on me and how to handle myself now. Any advice?

I hate my job (Big 4)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:26 PM PST

I've made manager in the private client services tax group and I think it may be finally time to move on. Been here for 5 years. The only thing is - I'm not sure to where. I really only know how to do individual taxes (plus some gift and trust tax returns) for HNW clients.

What I do know is I hate my job and the extreme hours and the constant administrative bullshit (Mercury). I am the definition of burnt out and in need of a change with better work life balance.

Any thoughts on where to begin looking?

    Intern with worries

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:34 PM PST

This is my first internship. I've been here for a month now and I'm worried my senior doesn't like me. I get my work done in a timely manner and don't bombard him with questions. We just don't talk much about anything other than the stuff we are working on.

I really want an offer and working here has been my dream job since high school.

Could I be over thinking this? And what things could I do to win them over?

Hi everyone, does anyone have any ideas about what this writing assessment typically is and what skills it looks at? This is my first time hearing about it so I don't know what to expect. Would definitely love some of your inputs!

Why do people opt for big 4 when there are plenty of great jobs in the private sector with comparable wages (honest question)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 06:51 PM PST

Basically the title. Just curious why people would work in the Big 4 knowing that they're going to get killed hourly during busy season. I just recently accepted a position that pays better than Big 4 at a great private company that actually pays better than any position I've seen in public accounting. Are there any real benfits besides other private sector jobs that prefer experience in a Big 4 accounting firm?

Are these people serious? They require a full-time designated CPA with 5 years experience among a multitude of other senior requirements and are offering 47-54K salary in the freaking heart of the GTA. Lol.

Internship but almost strictly AP work. Common?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:56 PM PST

I've been at this internship for almost 2 semesters now and have been assigned AP responsibility. Work load is pretty heavy so it's very difficult for me to explore other areas. It's constant pressure for AP work alone that it stresses me out to offer to take other responsibilities or reach out for more tasks. Ideally, I want to be more free to experience other areas. Is this an uncommon for an accounting internship? Should I move on to another internship? I want to gain more knowledge beyond AP. On the positive note, the intern before me started exactly the same way and now he does actual accounting work. I was basically hired on so that he can move on while I take over the AP stuff. I just don't see the same move happening even if they liked me enough bc of the size of the company... Would love to hear feedbacks on this situation. Feel free to ask me any questions.
