THANK YOU to everyone who chimed in to give advice and chill me the heck out. You made my blood pressure go down significantly over the weekend until I could talk to the insurer.

I got a customer rep on the phone this morning, and she said what several of you advised - that I just needed to get the hospital to submit a retroactive preauthorization. "A step was skipped," in her words. It's not a problem and they can get it taken care of.

I wish they would spell that out in the EOB and not give us damn heart attacks. We were seriously panicking. But thanks, Reddit. You're good people.

[CA] Door Ding in Parking Lot

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 11:35 PM PST

    Hello,

So the past weekend I parked in a parking structure into an area with only 2 parking spots, bordered by walls (so it's pretty tight). There was a sign that said "head in only" so I parked head in to the spot on the right. The spot to my left was empty. I left and then about an hour later I came back and there was a car in the empty spot to my left. He was reversed parked when it was supposed to be head in only. Well it was a pretty big car so I checked my side door in case there was a ding and sure enough it was there.

There was a family near by that was just awkwardly standing in the parking lot kind of checking in on us but wouldn't approach. I finally asked them "is this your car?" And the father said "Yes." I asked "did you by chance hit my car with your door?" and he said "no, I purposely climbed over to passenger to get out of the car." That's what was strange. I never told him if there was a dent or where the dent was. It could have been driver door or driver side passenger door. I asked "do you mind if i open your door to see if it lines up with the dent?"

This is when he started getting very angry. Saying that I'm accusing him of being a liar, how dare you etc... But eventually I finally got him to let me open the door. And of course, lines up perfectly. I started taking a video of the door lining up with the dent and our license plates and the sign that says "head in only". I asked for his license and ID and he refused. So I said that I had to call the cops if you refuse to give me information and he said okay go ahead.

Now this all seems like conjecture at this point but it was during my phone call to the police that was damning evidence. I heard his wife talking to him trying to calm him down and she said "well you DID hit his car....just give him the information". So he gave me his ID and Insurance information and left.

Honestly...if he was honest and apologetic I probably would have just let it go. But he was so rude and angry when I was just trying to calmly explain the situation.

So what I have is this: 1. Video of his door lining up to the dent, sign that says "head in only", and our license plates. 2. His ID and Insurance. 3. Theres a security camera in the parking structure looking DIRECTLY at our parking spot (not sure if this will be help or be possible to obtain)

So what would be the best action at this point? Do I call his insurance and see if this is enough evidence to get a claim? There was a little paint scratched off so I don't want to pay hundreds because of this asshole.

    Thank you!

Question about coverage for a doctor's screw up

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 09:35 PM PST

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post, but I'm in a sticky situation.

In December, I went to my GYN for what should have been a simple IUD replacement - remove the old one, put in a new one. Well, the old one came out... mostly. After an ultrasound, they found that a piece had broken off of the old one and was embedded in my uterus.

So, I had a procedure done to see if they could find and remove it. No luck, but while I was under anesthesia, they went ahead and placed the new IUD.

Today I had my follow up from the procedure. After several minutes of looking through the records, and a manual verification, the doctor found that she had implanted the wrong type of IUD.

Now, it's generally a simple fix, just pull out the wrong one and put in the right one. However, I had employer based insurance coverage in December. Now, I'm on a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare doesn't cover birth control of any kind. Therefore, my doctor is saying that I'll end up having to pay to have the correct IUD put in, unless she can convince Medicare that it's a treatment for defective bleeding (one of the reasons we decided on the specific type of IUD in the first place).

I guess my question is, insurance wise, how should this be handled? I really feel like I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake. I even made it abundantly clear that I needed this all taken care of before the end of 2018 because I would be going back on Medicare for 2019.

Edit: She did say that if she couldn't get Medicare to pay for it, her office would "work with me" on it. I also find it somewhat wrong for them to be trying to bill Medicare for it...

    Disputing a accident with Enterprise?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:52 AM PST

I was involved in a car crash recently. I was driving down the street going about 20-25 mph and as I pass a smaller street I get hit by another car going about 25-30 coming from the smaller street. Now he had a stop sign but claims that he did a stop and saw no one and continued on his way but I think he didn't do a stop and just ran it and hit me. I talked with Enterprise because he was driving in one of their rentals and they asked me alot of questions and we spent about half hour talking. I sent them pictures and the guy said ok we have everything we need and that a estimator would come and see my car to fix it. The next day estimator came and took pictures and told me that they would see how much to fix my car. Now few days pass and Enterprise send me a email saying that I'm being negligent and that I'm responsible for the accident and that I should pay. How do I dispute them?

Insurance claiming hospital was out of network, but verified it was in-network beforehand

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 06:48 PM PST

    Indiana.

Our son was born on 12/27 at the hospital in which my wife's OBGYN does deliveries. This OBGYN was initially found on our insurance's website and is in-network. I assumed the hospital was in-network as well.

Nevertheless, I've learned to never make assumptions with insurance thanks to this sub- so I called the insurance company (Cigna) about a week prior to the birth and explained the situation and asked for them to verify that this hospital was indeed in network for deliveries.

After some brief checking, they stated that there was "nothing for me to worry about, this hospital is in-network and is part of the Open-Access Plus network and we won't have any problem.

Guess what arrives in the mail last week? You are right! A declaration from Cigna stating that we used an out of network hospital and that the out of pocket will be significantly higher.

My question for you fine folks- what should I do from here? Appeal? Insurance Regulatory Board complaint? Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

My car slid on snow/ice while in park and damaged front bumper. Collision or Comprehensive?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 02:33 PM PST

Today I f'd up. I live in Denver, and while driving to my destination I pulled off to a scenic stop to take a couple pictures. Put the car in park and turned on the E-brake.

I turned around to notice my car 20 yards ahead of where it was originally parked.

It hit the plow on a pick up truck, which caused no damage to the truck. I talked to the guy and he said to just worry about my car. The front passenger side panel tore off and there's a small dent along the front passenger area.

Would this situation be collision since it hit another vehicle? Or comprehensive since I wasn't in the car and it slid due to environmental conditions?

Obviously I f'd up and shouldn't have parked it where I did.

I'm worried cause I literally just started this policy with a new insurance carrier a week ago.

[CA] Auto insurance releasing my car.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 06:37 PM PST

I got into an auto accident and the opponent insurance had accepted the fault.

They recommend releasing my vehicle (more money on releasing other than retaining my vehicle).

So I have agreed upon via email and IAA called just now to pick up my car.

Is this the right process or do I have to sign any paper document beforehand that they would for sure give us the right amount of check that they offered in the first place? (I do have the initial email that they sent us with the amount that they would offer for both retaining and releasing)

    Thanks in advance.

    Catastrophic healthcare plan in GA

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 05:03 PM PST

Hi, I am looking for some advice on my options for healthcare in the state of Georgia. Married 27/m and 24/f. We are really just looking for something to cover major events like cancer, or a motorcycle accident and don't have an issue paying out of pocket for the occasional doctors visit. My wife contacted an advisor with USHAdvisors and he sent us a plan from Freedom Life Insurance Company of America, which at a glance appears to be 'decent' at a cost of ~$260/mo with a deductible/out of pocket max (in network) of $3000, however reviews are VERY negative. I am totally lost reading through the brochure, and I can't tell if they do in fact cover everything after the $3000 deductible or if that only applies to certain things. In this Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/LQqLnky I copied the overview of plan features. I am also open to suggestions for better options. Thank you!

Someone backed into my parked car

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 04:17 PM PST

Hi, quick question. Never had an accident (even though I could hardly call this one) so a bit shaken up I guess. Was parallel parked on the street behind another car, sitting in my car on my phone. Left plenty of space for person in front of me to get out and drive away. Person in front of me backed into my car probably going like 5 mph or less, not fast. They were in a huge SUV like car (I have a small Kia) so it jolted me a bit. I got out and didn't see any physical damage to either car. It was getting dark out though so I will check tomorrow as well. Got the other person's contact and insurance.

My question here is if there's no damage when I look tomorrow, there's no need for a claim right? I don't see the need to have insurance involved but at the same time I have never had this happen to me before. Sorry if it's a dumb question but thank you in advance!

Offered a settlement by an insurance company: am I expected to negotiate?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 12:02 PM PST

A long story short: I was T-Boned by a red light runner in October. My vehicle was taken care of by the at-fault party's insurance carrier.

I went to the hospital via ambulance, had X-Rays and an MRI, and had two specialist consultations before taking advantage of at-home physical therapy. I missed about one week of work, but more importantly because I was injured I wasn't able to work an average of 10 hours of overtime per week for about 7 weeks. I paid for all medical treatment with my own insurance, as well as copays.

I received an offer today. The adjuster told me that I couldn't prove I usually work the overtime that I stated because the pay stubs I sent them were over one year old (I had surgery this time last year so last year was the only year I didn't).

She made the initial offer, which seemed low to me. After she made the settlement offer, she told me "unless there's anything else you can think of to claim".

My question is this: am I supposed to negotiate with her? I just don't think that the amount I was offered is even the amount that my insurance was charged for medical care. I'm just looking to what I should expect here, and what the claims adjuster is expecting. I live in Virginia if that helps.

Possible Ice Dam, probably screwed up making a homeowner's insurance claim, but I'm not sure.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 03:42 PM PST

3 years ago a wire pulled the fascia board away from my house by about an inch so I called a contractor. He told me to remove all the soffit and fascia and replace it. This was done. Then I had new gutters installed because ice would melt in the corner of my house, over my cement back door steps and make ice. That didn't solve the problem anyway, with the ice forming on the steps but I wanted you to know that I've done all maintenance normally needed.

Fast forward to yesterday. It snowed a lot, my wife pointed out that around the kitchen window the paint was peeling and the plaster was soft and wet. I panicked and called my insurance 24 hour line and they opened a claim. We have brick house and there is a line of water frozen on the outside of the wall directly above the window on the outside. After reading everything I've read today (I spent all day looking up ice dams and insurance) it seems that I may have been better off not calling them and just dealing with it myself. Insurance frustrates me in the fact that I've never made a claim in 10 years, but now I feel like they're going to deny this and jack my rates up anyway because it's water and they're afraid my house will mold. Tomorrow the adjuster comes at 8:30 in the morning. Is there anything I should know? I have a 1000 dollar deductible also.

    Pre-authorization on mental health?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 03:36 PM PST

My husband has a Blue Cross PPO plan. He's been suffering quietly from mental health issues and wants to talk to a psychiatrist (?) to get on medication. His health insurance plan says mental health requires pre-authorization. How does he go about obtaining this and from whom? The situation is at a boiling point. Can I call for him?

Auto insurance calls for permission to release info to other party’s lawyer. Is that normal? What’s going to happen next?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 03:19 PM PST

Hi all. I'll do my best with explaining the situation.

Main question: Is it common for your auto insurance company to call you and ask for permission to release your information to the lawyer of the other party involved in accident?

We lent our car to someone and he got into a minor accident. It was his fault but has no insurance. The driveway of the house he was driving out of was icy and he couldn't brake and end up hitting a passing car at the rear. We're in Ohio.

The other party involved ended up taking an ambulance to the hospital. I was not there, but was told the other party was walking around just fine. I suspect he's taking advantage of the situation. But it doesn't change anything.

Our insurance has been excellent and responsive and everything. Our car was deemed unfixable, the other party had minor damage. Today we received a call saying that the other party has hired a lawyer and that the lawyer is requesting our information - well my husbands info specifically since he was the policyholder to this car.

We denied permission because it seemed very odd to my husband as it does to me. Is this normal procedure? What should we expect in the coming days? I have never been involved in an accident so I am clueless.

    TIA.

rental car got hit while parked

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 01:29 PM PST

we rented a car, put it on the Chase Sapphire Reserved card which includes primary coverage, we declined any insurance from the rental agency.

wife discovered the bumper got shattered while it was parked in a lot. She called GEICO (our insurance provider) and reported it.

Rental agency is going to go through insurance on the CC used to rent the car.. but this claim won't go away on GEICO's end.

What are the chances our rate goes up now? This is assuming any payouts are fulfilled not from GEICO but from the insurance on the cc.

US Expat living overseas, what type of insurance for renting cars in the US and other countries

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 04:40 AM PST

    Background info:

Husband and I are US expats now residents of the UAE. We no longer own a car or have car insurance in the US. We do still have valid US driver's licenses. We plan on visiting the US periodically to see family and friends. So my questions are

    1. What type of car insurance should we get when we rent a car in the US? Our credit card offers damage insurance but only as secondary coverage; it assumes you have US car insurance. Or are we stuck getting the insurance at the rental counter?
    2. Is there an insurance we should be getting in order to have continuous coverage even though we're overseas? So that we don't have any issues getting insurance when we eventually move back to the US?
    3. Any other advice for insurance for renting a car in any other country?

Overall we just want to be educated so we can make smart plans when we travel. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Home Insurance Non Renewal Due to At Fault Auto Accident Two Years Ago

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 04:15 PM PST

    Hello world,

I have just been told by my dad and shown the letter from our home insurance company that we are unable to renew our policy due to an at fault auto accident that i was involved in almost two years ago. Can someone please explain to me how me being in an accident affects our home insurance policy. We have AAA for car insurance and Umbrella Home insurance which I think is through AAA. The auto accident I was involved in was almost 2 years ago in April. Please anyone that knows something or can point me to an article would be great. Google was not much of help or I Just not using the right look up words. Thank you in advance. :D

Auto insurance in Canada for US citizen

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 12:21 PM PST

I just moved from Florida to Ontario. I'm working in Ontario on a 1 year work permit, after which I I tend to return to the States. In Florida I had (and currently still have) Geico for auto insurance. From what I understand Geico coverage will still apply for shorts tourist trips to Canada, but if you intend to live there then they will not cover you.

I'm trying to determine what my options are. Insurance in Ontario seems to be quite expensive, and even more so for foreigners. Would it be possible to get insurance from a US provider which would still cover me living in Canada for the year? Or am I stuck with paying exorbitant amounts with a Canadian company?

    Fine Art Insurance ELI5, please.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 11:08 AM PST

I am currently looking for fine art insurance. I live in the USA. From what I understand fine art insurance is a different species. What are some of your experiences or some of the things you wish you knew that could help first timers (artists) like me? Should I have to use a specialized art insurance agency, or could I use a different term that could help me get the same results using a regular insurance agency? Are there tax deductions I could take advantage of (shipping cases, locking devices, home office/studio, appraisal costs, etc). I see that some companies do ask for appraisals and some don't require it for exhibition/ showcasing. The appraisal process isn't a one size fits all either. There are other options as well. Any advice or considerations will help greatly. Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Have a good day Redditors.

    Dropping auto policy

    Posted: 28 Jan 2019 09:11 AM PST

    Allstate vs Farmer's?
