Need advice on property damage on total loss

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 03:54 PM PST

So my 2015 Audi A4 was totaled (multiple airbag deployments) in a collision, and the other party's insurer accepted 100% liability.

My insurer came up with an amount that was about $4,000 below KBB, etc. I asked for the comps etc, that they used to come to that valuation, and based on that I replied with some questions:

    • One vehicle was listed on the same location they used as being $1,000 more than they used as the basis.
    • One dealer had a similar vehicle with 6,000 miles and $2,000 more than their comp vehicle and I "wondered" why they used the other ("Hmm, what's wrong/different with this one that another vehicle with more mileage costs more?" - obviously I factored in packages etc).
    • The fact that they had avoided multiple comps that were ~50mi away, and instead 6 of their 7 comps were between 100 and 150 miles away.

I supplied that information to the adjuster, who duly told me "I'll pass this on to our total loss team".

And then came back a week later, "They reviewed everything and came up with another amount, which was nearly $1,000 lower, so you should stick with the original settlement offer".

I mean, how can you revise a settlement offer _down_ with multiple examples of how I am being low-balled in the first place?

To add insult to injury, they had rated my tires as "Fair to Good". Three month old Toyo Proxe +4s, nearly $1,400 worth. When pushed on that they bumped the settlement by $70.

Not to mention, despite me being their insured, and everything subject to subrogation, the entire process is adversarial, rather than advocacy - lines like "You know, we are trying to help you out - we've been paying your medical bills so far" (and I've been paying for a policy that includes PIP for multiple years, so forgive the groveling appreciation you expect for fulfilling contractual obligations for which you were compensated).

How can I best handle this?

Health insurance for a hospital in a different state

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:48 AM PST

Hi, I have a strange situation where I need to buy insurance to have a specific procedure done. Due to the nature of the specialty of what I need to have done, only a few doctors preform this procedure.

The hospital is called Saint Peter's Healthcare in New Brunswick, NJ. And the doctor is out of network with all insurance.

I have been told to buy insurance that will grant me "out of network benefits" and to make sure that the hospital is "in network". They said to get a "PPO" plan.

Currently I live in Seattle, WA. And my employer provided insurance is called first choice health. They offer me zero coverage for this operation. No one pays out of pocket for this but I have been told it would range about $200k. A lot of their patients have to set up gofundme accounts (I plan to eventually) to afford it.

I can clarify the rationale behind going only to this specific doctor but that is not what I need help with.

Is there any health insurance options I truly have? Can I set up a business in NJ and attempt to gain ins thru that or do I need move to NJ? Are there any plans out there that offer coverage for anything like this? Can I just marry one of you for your insurance? My parents said they could only help my refinancing their home, but they aren't willing to do that at this time.

Please feel free to ask me any other questions if it might help to straighten this out!

    Thanks!!!

    Health Insurance After Leaving Job

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 04:40 PM PST

I quit my job earlier this year on good terms but I was sent a new health insurance card from the provider they are using.

I no longer receive any paychecks so they won't have anything to deduct from me. Is the coverage still good for a few more months and I've already paid for this coverage from previous pay checks?

Do I need to contact member services? It's Aetna btw.

    Jewelry coverage

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 07:10 PM PST

I lost my wedding set in January of 2017. Stupidly, we never added it to our homeowners insurance. I filed a police report, and posted on FB in hopes of it being returned if found. A couple weeks ago, I went back to the jewelry store where I purchased the set and the owner told me my homeowners may still cover the loss. Is this something worth pursuing? We have State Farm and I'm hoping our personal property policy will cover it, but am not sure.

Help w/ Insurance Exemption - Adults lost Medicaid in August, Total Gross Income Below 138% Poverty Level in Florida

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 10:58 AM PST

    (x-posted to r/tax )

tl;dr Family of 3 in Florida with 2018 income of ~$24k. Adults lost medicaid in August 2018, didn't know you had to file for an exemption BEFORE you lost coverage. Is there anything we can do to avoid paying the penalty? If not, do we have to pay the full penalty if we were only without insurance for 4 months?

We are in Florida and our total gross income in 2018 for a family of 3 was $23,592 (rounded to the nearest dollar) as of my husband's final paycheck of the year.

My husband lost his job with insurance in late 2016 and we qualified for Medicaid. He finally got a (lower paying) job with no benefits in August 2017 and we qualified for 1 year of "transitional" Medicaid. In August 2018, the year was up and my husband and I no longer were eligible for Medicaid. Thankfully, our income was low enough for our child to keep his coverage.

For our medical care, we found a lovely sliding scale clinic only a mile from our house. They had us meet with a case worker to see if we qualified for anything, but she said our income to either too low or too high for everything except the clinic's sliding scale. We qualified for free prescriptions, primary, mental, and dental care with low cost referrals to specialists associated with the clinic.

The case worker never mentioned the tax implications of us not having insurance coverage and my husband and I didn't think to ask or research ourselves. Honestly, we're both on prescriptions that are dangerous to stop suddenly, so that was our more pressing concern at that time. After that was settled, we completely accept that our ignorance is entirely our fault.

I started doing our taxes today and discovered we had to file for an exemption BEFORE we lost coverage because you can only get an exemption for FUTURE months. It looks like we may be SOL.

Is there anything I can do to avoid paying the penalty?

If not, are we responsible for the full penalty despite only being without insurance for 4 months?

My husband always thought I was crazy for starting taxes so early, but this is exactly why I do it as soon as I have a the last paystub of the year. If we're stuck eating this penalty, I accept that it's my fault. It sucks, but ignorance of the law is no excuse. I really don't understand why a computer or human can't just look at our return and see "family of 3", "Florida", and "$24k" and see that we qualify for an exemption. :(

Two Insurance Policies on Car (w/ Black Box Nearly at Mileage Limit)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:22 AM PST

I've currently got my first car and very stupidly under estimated my millage at 3000. I'm now at the 2,500 mark (3 months into the policy) and need to buy top-up miles which cost around £300 per 1000 miles and for the year.

I've calculated that I need an additional 6000 miles until my policy ends October 2019 (black box in the car calculates my miles via GPS ect) Doing this would cost nearly £2000, the policy was only £800 for the year!

My finances can't shell out another 2K for insurance for the millage but doing quotes online getting another policy with 6000 miles would cost 1k for the year.

    My questions are

    - Is this legal?

    - How would my current insurance stop/pause counting my miles as it's covered on another policy surely?

    - Am I complete idiot for underestimating my miles

Roadside assistance programs through insurance vs external companies?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:17 AM PST

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I recently got into a wreck uninsured, so this time I wanna make sure I have my ass covered.

Is it worth it to do roadside assistance programs (like AAA) through a separate program instead of through the insurance? I've heard insurance companies report it if you use the roadside assistance, which raises your insurance rates in general. Whereas AAA isn't going to affect insurance rates.

It's cheaper for it to be bundled with insurance--ends up being about 14$ a year through the insurance company, compared to AAA's 50$/year. Is it worth it?

Side note, but what kind of increments do insurance companies raise your rates when you file claims?

Sorry for a lot of questions. I want to be covered, but I also don't have a lot of money.

    Federal Employee Supplemental Disability Insurance

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 04:03 PM PST

Federal employee looking for disability insurance w/ pre-existing condition (indeterminate colitis -- ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease). Ideally this would be to cover difference between SSADI/OPM disability (if approved) and my current salary for life with inflation. The reality is over the next 1-2 years it's possible medications may not get my into remission (currently going 15x/day) and I would need to get colectomy. It's possible I may need to be out of work for a year or so to eliminate stress as a cause of my frequency and urgency and to potentially recover from multiple surgeries.

What are my options besides Fed Advantage and AFSPA?

    Bodily Injury Claim

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 03:22 PM PST

[OR] To start off I was in an accident about a year ago. I was T-boned going 35 crossing an intersection. I had some pain in my neck and lower back. Went to a chiropractor for 3 months and got that sorted out. I'm at the point with the other parties insurance to pay for the claim. I had a talk with my chiropractor this this was on negotiation terms and it should go back and forth a couple times and that I don't need to get an attorney. What should I expect to get as a settlement from this?

    Cheaper Car Insurance

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 03:19 PM PST

Hello all, I was wondering if you guys could help me find a way to lower my insurance and maybe also my families as a whole! Me and my 5 other family members are all under one policy (GEICO) as a whole and this is the monthly insurance breakdown-

Me -220$- 19 year old boy with one accident resulting in a totaled Honda Civic 2010 that happened around February of this year due to a driver cutting right in front of me and braking on the highway and I hit him but the person just drove off leaving me to call and talk to my insurance raising my rate but besides that clean record. My parents recently bought me a Honda Civic 2016 used coupe

Twin Brother-300$ - clean record- drives a 2012 Hyundai Genesis coupe track edition

25yr sister-300$ -one totaled Lexus ct 200h which she had just bought and was financing until she wrecked it a few months later back in 2014 and after a few months she bought and is now driving the same car just different color besides that clean record

    22yr sister-200$ -clean record-drives an Infiniti g35 207

Parents aren't sure how much theres is but total I think it's 1,100 a month and their cars are a 2007 Toyota Sienna and a 2008 Mazda 5

I took the defensive driving course to lower our policy as a whole but they said it couldn't be applied because i took it when my dad was suppose to and my dad isn't over 50. I know I'm still a teen driver also adding the accident made it worse for my driving record individually but would it still be this high for me individually? And my dad said that my sisters accident made it much worse for everyone else so when one person gets into an accident do they raise the rate for everyone in the policy? She is getting kicked off on her birthday in July. I tried asking and applying for all the discounts like good student and stuff but they said it's all already been applied and my dad is the policy holder so he has to ask for them. I just care a lot about my family and I'm trying to save us all money but I don't know much about Insurance so any advice or anything I can do would be helpful and greatly appreciated!!!

Received a bill from dentist after routine cleaning that I assumed was covered

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 02:33 PM PST

    Hello,

I recently went to my dentist for the second time, all within the same calendar year. My insurance covers 1 exam and 2 cleanings per year. When I went in June, they did an exam and a cleaning. Everything was completely normal and I scheduled another visit for December. My insurance covered the first visit 100% and I assumed the second would be covered as well. I just received a bill from my dentist stating that insurance covered $97 for "Prophylaxis-Adult," but that I owe $62 for "Periodic Oral Evaluation."

Unfortunately I cannot get in touch with either my dentist or the insurance company since the offices are already closed for the New Year. I did not ask the dentist to do anything special, so I do not see why I should have a balance to pay. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Questions about car insurance (between different drivers and policies)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 02:24 PM PST

I've always heard different answers to some of the questions below, and would like to get some clarification. Thank you in advance, and Happy New Year to all!

Let's say we have the following:

    • Person A with Car X on a policy

    • Person B with Car Y on a policy

    • Person C with no car and no car insurance of any kind

    • Person D with no car and a non-owner policy

If Person B gets into an accident driving Car X, who pays for damages? Whose premiums would go up?

What happens if Person C drives Car X, and gets into an accident? Who pays, and would the premiums for Person A go up?

What happens if Person D drives Car X, and gets into an accident? Would Person A be liable for anything, and would the premiums for Person A go up?

For any of the questions above, would it matter whether the individuals were of the same household / share the same address?

    Thank you!

    Home water damage. [Michigan]

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:23 AM PST

The water connection for my washing machine came loose or broke. It slowly flooded the whole area around the laundry room and kitchen. Some floorboards started to feel squishy and the tiles started to lift. I pryed up the tile and found that all of the subfloor was soaked and probably shot.

I have contacted my insurance agent to start a claim and was told I would be contacted today by a claims guy. What other concerns should I have or language should I watch out for. This is going to be a major claim and I'm wanting to make sure it is covered.

    Please help.

Covered injury today, new plan tomorrow, what do?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:20 AM PST

Hi all, being a little vague here, but I had a dental issue today that will probably require an endodontist. I have dental coverage now, but my insurance carrier changes tomorrow. Given that this will probably be multiple visits, and the first one will probably be in the new year, which carrier do I claim this with?

Reversed into someone in a parking lot, she took my insurance, didnt give me hers.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:37 AM PST

I was about to leave a parking lot but there was a traffic jam, so I decided to leave from the other side of the lot. My car has eye sight and a sensor, didnt see her until I backed up. I'm still sure it was probably my fault. Minimal damage on my end. Her right head light is smashed and some damage to her bumper and hood. She was pretty livid and kept saying "you better have insurance", so she took pictures of it and walked off to her car. Gave police my statement("didnt see anyone, reversed, hit someone) and went back to the car. She was talking to him for a long time but I didnt hear anything. Still pretty sure this was my fault so my questions are:

    Do I need their insurance

Should I try to request the report to check the factuality of his narrative? I'm a bit concerned because the lady was livid and discussing it with the cop for like 15 minutes.

Is it more streamlined than that? Will our insurances just squabble for a bit and come to an agreement without me doing anything?

    Thanks

Other person claims their vehicle was stolen (NYC)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 12:32 PM PST

Someone hit my car and having talked to their insurance, they told me the person is claiming the car was stolen (it was a hit and run, the person left their car at the scene at 4am - our car was parked, I believe they were intoxicated). This person did 8k-10k worth of damages. Their insurance is still investigating but what are my options in terms of hiring a lawyer to sue? Can I just call some up that deal with car accidents and get a free consultation if they think this is worth persuing? Thanks for any help

How is this going to turn out?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:37 AM PST

I was rear-ended about two weeks ago. All I noticed at the scene was a bent bumper and rear cross member. About a week ago the driver rear wheel fell off while I was driving. Low speed so really no additional damage.

The claims adjuster seems hesitant that the accident could cause the weel to come off.

I imagine that if they do not feel that the accident could cause the wheel to come off, they will blame it on overtightened lug nuts. Then I will have to go to the company that did my alignment about four months ago and put a claim in there.

I then assume that their insurance will say that if it wasn't for the impact of the accident the wheel studs would not have failed.

So I'll have one insurance company claiming improper installation and another claiming collision damage.

    Who will be right?

Am I going to be stuck with the bill for the wheel coming off?

    Question about auto insurance

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:51 AM PST

Hey everyone! Thanks for taking the time.

So I have an interesting situation. I have a little sister (18) who lives in a little apartment by herself. I am the leaseholder of that apartment and I help her quite a bit financially. Including auto insurance, I have it to where we are both covered with her car (Volvo) and that keeps the payment reasonable. The General Insurance

Now, my girlfriend and I just bought a 2017 Focus. Should I just have all 3 of us on one plan? or can my GF just get a plan by herself? Therefore I would be covered by the General and she would be covered by Geico.

The reason I ask is that our mother just died and I'm the one carrying the financial burden. So if I can save money anywhere I need to know.

Is there any responsibility for my new window?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:10 AM PST

Left our car in a parking garage while spending the day in Chicago. Came back that night to an obvious attempted break-in. Luckily they couldn't break the window so they weren't able to get into anything, but we will need to replace the window. My deductible wont cover the cost for replacement, but Im wondering would the parking garage need to be contacted about it? We filed a police report along with about a dozen other people that actually had their cars broken into at the time. There are hardly any security cameras there from what I could tell. For whatever reason I took a picture of the car before we left it, so you know this happened while it was there. Any thoughts?

had a fender bender - coupe of questions

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:08 AM PST

had a fender bender last night, other driver at fault for rear-ending us... Just cosmetic and rear bumper thankfully, no injuries / / ambulance or towing involved. have police report and claim started with both carriers and all documentation has been submitted...

I'm filing through my insurance and will get reimbursed for my deductible from other carrier (USAA) instead of the added headache of back and forth contact with other carrier myself... Questions for anyone familiar with these situations:

1.) How likely is it that USAA will provide me with my deposit at the front end of this whole issue (like within the next few days or a week)? I really don't want to have to shell out my OWN 500 for this.

2.) For rental car costs, can that be submitted to USAA afterwards when my vehicle is fixed and they cut a check for that as well -- or would that probably try to just settle up AFTER everything and give us ONE single payment for all the damages / costs we've incurred (rental, deductible and repair costs (reimb. to our carrier))?

3.) No one was hurt thankfully, but how likely is it that USAA is able to compensate us for the headache and drama of all of this? We were just minding our business and did nothing to contribute to this. Has anyone had any luck expressing similar sentiments and getting some form of compensation for the inconvenience or is it only tied to what costs are incurred?
