Buying a single unit from a Chinese OEM

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 06:03 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I'm currently looking to start a drone spraying business servicing crops in my area (not the US) and need to buy a single drone just to start.

I went to alibaba and found lots of OEM companies with good prices, however, my understanding is that these prices are usually for big orders and not single purchases, the listing specifies a minimum order of one but I'm not sure if that's only for samples . How should I go about buying a single unit from them and what can I expect in terms of price? Does it increase a lot?

Thanks in advance for all the answers.

22 year old wanting to build passive income streams - need help with ideas

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 12:26 PM PST

    Hello guys,

as the title says, I'm a 22 year old guy wanting to build passive income streams. Let me share my story in a bit more detail. Also, if you have any other subreddits to recommend, you are encouraged to do so.

I am heavily interested in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and am enrolled in a Computer Science major. My ideal job would be doing AI research. However, I also want to have additional perks in that job, such as being able to work remotely. Working remotely, I found out, was not really possible for AI safety research. So, I thought to myself: "What if I can invest "the hustle" now, build passive income streams and then be financially independent? Then I can use my time however I want, but I will probably use it to research AI.". Also, extra money doesn't hurt either way.

I define passive income stream as something that I invest time into now so that later on in generates revenue, without me having to spend any time on it whatsoever (0 minutes). I also want to emphasize that I would like the passive income stream to be as related to what I'm doing now (which is studying AI and reading books on various topics (mostly life philosophy)) as much as possible. Having that said, here are my ideas (sorted from most relevant to my life right now to least relevant):

    • Starting a blog (in the topics I'm interested in, such as life philosophy, documenting what I'm doing or how to study efficiently) - this might be a good idea, but I'm not so sure I would make it. Today there's a plethora of life philosophy books and blogs (by people who have read much more books than me on that field and had much more experience), similar to efficient study books and blogs (think Scott Young, Cal Newport, Thomas Frank, Tim Ferriss). I don't know if I can get better than the competition. With documenting my journey, I don't know how I can monetize that. I mean sure, I can write about the stuff I'm learning in AI, but who cares for it? Maybe I can do something with documenting my journey, but I'm not sure how I would monetize it.
    • Creating a new app/ a new website/ new something - this is OK, but the question is - what do I create? Also, I'm in AI; people think that if you know Computer Science you can build an Android app and build a website and know everything about robots etc. You don't. I am really trying to specialize in the field of AI, so I am not that proficient in web development or mobile application development.
    • Investing - this sounds like a viable path, but it takes time to save up the money I would invest. This isn't that big of a problem, but maybe I can start something now.
    • Doing affiliate marketing - I don't know much about this one; maybe it would be viable. Especially because I've been complimented by people that I'm charismatic and a good public speaker, so I think, with further learning, I can learn to sell well. However, I wouldn't like to sell shitty products. I really want to make it a win-win for the buyer.
    • Real estate - don't know anything about it. Also, I'm from Europe, so maybe it is different than from the USA.

These are my current ideas. Maybe you have some, and, if you do, please put them in. Again, it would be preferred that the passive income stream is related as closely to my life as possible. I want to really make sure I am chasing happiness, as Gary Vaynerchuk said, but I would be really really happy if I had some baseline money from my passive income sources so that I can travel the world and do whatever I want with my time.

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: An idea that popped to mind as well was to make education courses (i.e. Udemy); so I first start a blog, then after a while create an educational course around some topic (like AI). However, support on those educational courses (like me helping people out) would probably be required, so that doesn't fit into my passive income definition.

What Do You Do If You Have A Strong Marketing Skillset With No Good Products To Promote?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:10 AM PST

So I've been doing online marketing / affiliate marketing for over 11 years now. I've made a lot of money in the past and have a crap ton of experience when it comes to selling stuff online. The problem is I have a strong skillset, but I don't have any good products to promote.

In the past I've promoted some pretty crappy offers because they paid well, but they lead to a lot of unhappy customers. For example promoting supplements that offer free trials to customers for a couple dollars, but end up roping people into subscriptions.

The money was good. $40-50 per sale. You could make some good money with a well designed website that sold the products. I ended up doing well and spent well over a million dollars in google adwords alone.

To make a long story short I stopped promoting those types of offers because I wanted to build a long term business / asset instead of making other people rich.

I have the skill set to market and sell anything I want, but I could never come up with a good product to promote. I'm not really interested in physical products because of the headaches involved with dealing with customers, shipping, product creation, etc.

My next step was to maybe do something digital like an ebook, I've sold my own ebooks in the past, but mainly teaching people what I know. It can be lucrative, but I don't want to be another guru pushing ebooks and coaching services. So I dropped that approach.

At this point I've come to realize that I think I'm best suited to just selling other products for a commission right now until I can figure out what kind of product I want to create on my own. The problem is...

Selling for a commission sucks these days unless you're willing to promote some shady offers. Here's why...

    1. Competition is a lot higher these days which means ads have gotten a lot more expensive which means lower margins.
    2. With lower margins it means you're going to want to promote something with a higher earning potential. Most products offer a very small margin unless you're promoting something sub-par.
    3. It doesn't make sense to sell something with 10$ commissions if you're paying 50 cents + per click on an advertisement.

So that leads me back to wanting to promote less than ideal products that pay 40$+ for a single sale.

I really don't want to do that, but it's the only thing that makes any sense financially with my skill set and costs involved.

So now I'm reaching out to you guys for ideas.

With the skill set I have, I feel like I'm wasting my potential because I can't find a good product to promote. At this point I feel like I would be happy taking a salary job in a company doing their marketing for them so I don't have to worry about what I want to sell. I can focus my efforts at improving their bottom line and becoming a valuable asset to them. Which is funny because this is /r/Entrepreneur and everyones trying to get out of their jobs and do their own thing and I'm looking to get a stable job.

But I don't have any degrees or anything. I started doing this out of high school. What I lack in degrees I make up for in experience and knowledge, but I wouldn't even know how to approach a company with my 'resume'.

What would you guys do in my situation?

    How much equity to give?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 08:21 AM PST

Sorry for the long message, but I want to give some context...

I've been working on a project for a few months now.

I have already completed the market study, contacted suppliers, MVP, website, eCommerce, packaging, image and branding.

After all that was done I met someone with a great scientific background (which I don't have) and authority in the area where my product will operate.

This person suggested some interesting modifications to make the product better and appeal to a broader audience.

She has also expressed her excitement in collaborating and joining the project and has already started talking in terms of "we", "us" and "our", while I am very cautious not to talk on those same terms yet.

I believe she will be a great asset and will bring value by complementing my lack of scientific research and will give authority to the product because now I can say it has been reviewed, approved and formulated by a scientist with an outstanding background.

She mentioned to be willing to drop her business (private practice) to join my project full time.

However, I envision most of the work that is not scientific (finances, marketing, customer support, supply chain, etc) will be done by myself or other people.

I also have enough resources to fund the first stage, so seed money is not something I need from her at this time and probably ever.

So my question is, if you were in a similar situation, how would you make an offer?. Would you consider this person as a co-founder? How much equity would you give?

    Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    ZC

Want to start a men’s hair product company.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 01:39 PM PST

I'm very interested and well versed in men's hair products. I've been thinking about starting my own line for a while. In this industry, there are usually two paths: formulate and make the products yourself (called home brew), or you can pay a lab to make it for you.

I'm not sure how to go about either. I've tried researching but I don't know how to even begin coming up with a base formula, and I haven't been able to find a lab.

    Website or blog first?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 01:22 PM PST

When first starting out to make a name for yourself or your brand, what would be the most proficient route to take, a website first, or a blog first? Most blogs get little no no traffic. Websites on the other hand have a better chance of being viewed, especially if the site design looks unique and interesting and the product or idea is good enough to invest time or money in.

Gauging Initial Interest in a Service & Market Research

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:10 AM PST

I have a clear service based business in my mind. I've done some research to know that no other companies currently operate in this space. In my mind, the first step is market research to find out if there are people who would be interested in using my service.

The part I'm having trouble with is I don't know what questions need to be asked to properly gauge interest, or the process for engaging a market research company.

I'm assuming prices vary, but is keeping it under $500 even reasonable? Are there any popular mediums for gathering market research?

Software license, 3d product design - requirements?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:26 AM PST

Hi all, I've got what I think is a pretty simple question but search engines are failing me.

Let's say I have an idea for a product, and wish to design the prototype components in 3D to print them up. I currently only have educational/personal use software, notably Autodesk Fusion.

The last thing I want to do be ready to take it out there is run into the legal whoopsie of "Hey, you need to use a commercial license if you want to make money. Since you used our free license we own what you've designed". Clearly understandable economically - but I'm not clear where the line is and want to be on the right side of it.

    Thanks for any insight

Explicit examples showing the line on "non-obviousness"

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 10:13 AM PST

I have been doing a lot of research about patents, and I'm still confused about what exactly non-obviousness is. All inventions must be non-obvious, defined as, "viewed as an unexpected or surprising development by someone skilled in the technology of the particular field".

However, this flies directly in the face of a lot of patents I have found. For example, there's a patent on a toy with lights spinning at the end of a wire. I don't think a toy designer would be "surprised" but such an invention or any of its elements, and yet the patent exists.

So, besides taking a patent attorney to lunch, is there any book, video, etc that goes through a bunch of examples of what is/ is not "non-obvious"? I can find lots of vague legal tutorials/ articles, and very primitive examples (making a coat hanger 5% smaller is not non-obvious, etc) but nothing that shows what it actually means when the rubber meets the road.

Is there a point to non-descript product names?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:56 AM PST

For instance, Black Rifle Coffee has a very targeted market of gun owners and the military and they give their coffees fun names like "Silencer Smooth" and what not.

Does this help with branding and therefore help build a community or is this just kind of pointless?

Does research into a potential business have any value?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:06 AM PST

I have a good idea for a service-oriented business that is doing very well nationally, but there is hardly anything like it in my area. I am moving soon, so I know I would not be able to start a business like this in this area, although I think it would be a great place to have one. Since I do think it would still be a great idea, however, I would love to do some research into starting one.

My question is since I am moving and won't be able to get anything off the ground, if I were to do extensive research and found out it was a viable option, at what point would I be able to "sell" that information to someone who actually could start that business?

I know it might sound a little confusing but I hope that makes sense. Please let me know what you think, thanks!

I know of a Redditor in a niche subreddit who could write a very successful book within that niche. How can I invest in the book or otherwise profit from it?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 02:12 PM PST

It's a niche subreddit, but this redditor is treated like royalty. He could publish a 100 page ebook and sell thousands of copies. I have no background in publishing, but I would like to encourage him to write such a book. In what ways would it be possible to profit from such an endeavor?

Off the top of my head, I could ghostwrite it for him and share the profits or maybe front some of the publishing costs as an investment.

Turning Social Media Into Literature. a collaboration network to launch a cloud publishing website

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 06:12 AM PST

My need is a social network of writers and programmers to help me deploy a fantastic writing dashboard on the cloud for both weblogging and self publishing. I already know through social media practice that if I engineer the social aspect of my website along with collaborators, I can create a highly competitive writing platform like /r/writingprompts that's useful past self publishing. I hope my description is adequate because the rest of this post will simply offer a way of achieving the goal.

I want to use my popularity on reddit ( my recognisable handle ) to populate a Discord server for discussing, brainstorming, and planning the next Xanga. Xanga 2.0 failed because the technology was not available to them for a secure weblogging service. With the new cloud platform, it's now very possible.

    https://discord.gg/JkfMApV

Visit my server and we'll talk about this personally.
