Where did this number come from? Investigating, brains exploding.

    He's pissed.

The emotion of loathing keeps growing,

He snaps! These cubicle walls imploding!

It's Monday afternoon, his mind already on boozing,

    Until he hears "Hey, EatMyAsset!"

    For Christs Sake, freakin' Susan.

"What are you doing? How's the weather? Have you found a solution?"

    Smack her with a backhand,

"There Susan, that's my owners contribution!"

I can't take this enslavement! Forget this engagement!

Jump on the desk and start throwing financial statements!

This MACRS Depreciation is making me constipated,

Every night my nightmares are consisting of misstatements.

With so much caffeine I'm feeling dehydrated,

    Now I always carry lube,

for when this firm bends me over at least I'm lubricated!

Career change from tax to other professions

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:25 PM PST

Hi all - I recently left my job as a Tax Manager at a national firm specializing in individual tax. I have felt burnt out on public accounting and I am trying to figure out what makes sense to either get into a corporate accounting role or to try something new altogether. I didn't go with my gut early in my career regarding my profession, and I think I stayed in my role too long which is limiting my current opportunities. Right now here are what I see as my options:

    1. Look for a job in private. With my background, the opportunities are either family offices or wealth management. These jobs are tough to get though as they don't come up too often. I've been applying to senior accountant roles but have not had much luck with interviews.
    2. I can take a job at another public accounting firm and try to see if I can get some accounting / bookkeeping experience. Would I be able to transition into audit or has that shipped sailed at my age / level (30 years old)? Can also look at going into corporate tax.
    3. Go back to school for an MBA or masters degree, and get into a management or marketing role somewhere. Not keen on investment banking. The MBA makes me uneasy over cost.

I'd appreciate any advice or recommendations, especially from anybody who has been in my shoes! I have a couple months severance so I have time to figure things out.

As an auditor, have you ever gotten somebody fired?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 03:28 PM PST

I've been to many clients before where the person who's in charge of the books don't know what the heck is going on. Instead of telling the boss that the person is incompetent, we would slave away to fix everything up for them without any assistance. Of course, this would mean working extra late nights and weekends. This is BS. Why is our profession made out this way? Why can't we just tell clients to hire people who actually know accounting? Get rid of the people who don't belong in the role.

I have a few questions about job postings and first jobs out of college in general.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:16 PM PST

So the first question is about job postings. I see a lot of job postings for things like Staff Accountant list basic requirements like "good customer service skills", "proficient with Microsoft Office", "Highly motivated with strong analytical, computer and oral/written communication skills", or "Detail-oriented; organized; self-starter" but then have experience requirements of something like 2 - 3 years. Very Vague in my opinion and it confuses me how the requirements can be so little but still ask for so much experience. A friend of mine told me that usually the experience requirements are what the company would want in a perfect world but if they get a pool of people who dont have much experience then thats what they have to deal with. I worry about this because I am going to a private university which isnt really recruited from much because the accounting program is so small like only 40 people in total.

As a student who would be graduating with no accounting experience how would you tailor your resume and cover letter to lessen the fact that you have less experience but at the same time still show that you are willing to learn and are willing to go the extra mile for this job?

My second question is where did most of you who decided to not go to public accounting start? I have heard many people say that accounts receivable or clerk positions are not good since you can get pigeon holed but others say that it is a pretty good way to say that you have accounting experience so that you can move on to a better position after 1 or 2 years.

It's my first semester in graduate school. I know I want this, but there is just so much to Accounting that I feel incapable of passing. It's overwhelming. How did you all study for accounting courses? I'm taking Tax, Government and Non Profit, Ethics, and Accounting Information System. Would love some advice on how to succeed, ways to study, and maybe some words of encouragement because I'm losing it. :/

What do parents do during busy season?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 03:39 PM PST

I'm not in traditional accounting or B4, so I just pick up on what is mentioned in here.

But like, when everyone talks about working until midnight or all the weekends or until 10 everyday....when do you pick up your kids? What if you need to, and your spouse can't?

Our office, we can work from home and flex our time, so I was just curious.

Have you ever audited a client that didn't hire accountants for accounting roles?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:22 AM PST

It just never ceases to amaze me how many (smaller) businesses would hire finance or operations people for accounting roles. When you go in for an audit, they're totally clueless about what you're asking/talking about.
