If you need motivation to pass your CPA...

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 06:31 PM PST

I was issued my CPA license on Wednesday. I took steps to update my resume, and secured 3 interviews within 48 hours. Today I accepted an offer that increases my base salary by 20k. It was 100% worth the short term misery.

Managers and partners, what is your worst quality when it comes to managing staff?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 05:35 PM PST

I'd like to get perspective outside of my firm to better navigate the conversation I will be having with one of my managers who has been known to cause a lot of stress for me and other staff for her 'just get it done' and 'don't ask questions' attitude. Thanks!

Tax Accountants in Industry: What's your job like?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 12:38 PM PST

How does it compare to public accounting life? Are you happy? What do you do exactly?

I'm currently a staff in PA and am reconsidering if tax is for me. I'm worried that I'm not particularly cut out for tax and am wondering if it's just the PA life I'm not cut out for or if the work is genuinely just difficult for me. Any advice would be appreciated!

Any advice for a big4 intern starting in a few days?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:53 PM PST

So I've already heard some general advice but was wondering some specifics. I'm starting Monday at one of the Big4 in the south. I'm on a first year audit for a water utility (energy?) client. I'm also on a large F500 oil and gas company. And a retail client as well.

Beside the general tips of being on time, staying organized, and taking notes... does anyone have any tips? I've heard that oil and gas will rack up a huge amount of hours for me, but the first time audit will hardly be any overtime at all if any. Any experiences in retails I should know about? How many hours should i expect to work for each of the clients on a first year audit, large oil and gas, and medium retail?

Super excited and optimistic for now with a little bit of anxiety. Just trying to prepare my mind for whats coming next! Thanks!

Further education with more name recognition for someone who has a degree from a small school? (Canada)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:25 PM PST

If you have a CPA, is it worth pursuing further education at a more recognized school to have the name brand for your long-term career? I got my bachelors degree at a college.

If so, what are some options in Canada? Is it just MBA? I don't think many schools offer Macc since we don't need 150 hours for the CPA.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 12:56 PM PST

I need some help friends! If my goal is to break into a top MBA program, which route is easier for me to achieve this goal? KPMG FDD or PWC CMAAS?

Also, how is KPMG FDD's reputation compares to the other 3?

    All refers to NYC location.

    Thanks a lot! Peace.

Need Help With Unit Count for CPA

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:39 PM PST

I am a senior in college graduating this year with a bachelors in accounting. I want to get my CPA license and I live in California. I will be graduating with 120 units completed. I need a 150 units to get my CPA. My question is how can I get the extra 30 units. I know I can get another bachelors or go for my masters, but can I go back to community college and get another associates degree or take some random classes until the unit count is fulfilled?

    Transitioning out of Military/into Accounting

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 10:43 AM PST

Hey ladies/gents just trying to pick your brains before the busy season starts and the headless horsemen roll across America. I transition out of the military in the next few months and plan on beginning my degree this coming fall.

I plan on doing 2 years at a JC/CC in Colorado and respectively transferring out and onto a well established accounting program from a University elsewhere.

I've heard a bit of a mixture in terms of competitiveness for acceptance rates, location, curriculum and its difficulty, etc. but I'm hoping to just get personal opinions of your guys/friends/families/ favorite universities and programs.

Also your opinions on cramming the 150 credit hours needs to take the CPA exam into 4 years, or spreading them out to possibly 5?

College is covered for me under the Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill so price for the University/Rent beyond other means of cost of living etc is covered, and I've saved up a fair amount in preparation for the move, etc. I also have some passive income after my discharge which will help.

I'm sorry if this comes off as dumb or rambling? I'm just trying to get a bit of guidance that isn't an ill organized webpage on google.

Feel free to scream at me to turn tail and run from accounting as well. All opinions and input are noted and appreciated.

Are there any famous politicians/heads of state that have an accounting background?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:47 PM PST

    Random shower thoughts...

And if your not from the US, are there any politicians or mayors etc that have an accounting background in your country?

Btw, it's really rare to hear of any famous person/celebrity (as in any average person off the street would know about) in general who has an accounting background. Any idea why?

For those that studied and passed with Wiley

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 05:47 PM PST

How were your study habits? Did you find the book and lectures useful? I've heard of people just knocking out hundreds of MCQ's and "studying" that way. I'm prepping for BEC right now and the book and lectures IMO are for the birds.

    CPAs: Pros and Cons?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:29 PM PST

I graduated with a BS in Econ a couple years ago and am considering going back for my masters in Accounting this Fall.

My question is: Would you say it's a good career and worth the schooling? A lot of the memes i see on this sub seem to be from people who arent crazy about it and id like to know the rundown before I invest anymore time and money.

    Thanks!

Is a Tax Practice niche covering NFP & Medical workers and companies too broad?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2019 04:48 PM PST

I've been informed that to be effective in the beginning, you should niche in an industry, then become an industry generalist later on if you want to. I'm thinking about niching in tax prep for individuals and companies that are essentially in the social and health services industry.

    • In addition to the title question, could you also offer additional feedback and criticism relevant to these areas of tax for personal and company returns.
