P.O. Box or UPS mailing address or some other physical address all together?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:15 PM PST

Hey my fabulous entrepreneurs! So I am in a pickle. I am currently working from home for my startup, but I will be moving out in a few months. Should I register my business with a P.O. Box or an UPS address to register my LLC? Or is there some other way I can do this altogether? As y'all can imagine, I am very new at this and would welcome y'all's wise advice and experience minds. Thank you. :D

How do I prove I'm the owner of my company?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:11 PM PST

Long story short, I'm trying to submit a request to a company (for my small business) and they need to verify me as an authorized representative by providing a signed documentary evidence.

But I'm already the owner. So...

    - What kind of letters/documents should I get?

    - Can I authorize myself to represent my own business? (would that look weird?)

How should I set up my business structure?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:23 PM PST

I'm based in NYC and I was advised to set up a C Corp for my use case but I have a dilemma.

I'm starting two seperate businesses with 2 different partners and I also plan to start businesses solely on my own.

I want to protect my own projects in case things go south with my 2 partners. That's why I do not want to have one c corp and have all our businessses as DBA.

Does this mean I have to set up 3 separate C Corps if i want to have that control? What are the pros and cons for this? Thanks.

What do you look for when you're researching a contractor for renovations, new builds, projects, etc?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:39 PM PST

Hey if you guys don't mind: when you and/or your business are faced with finding a contractor, what are you looking for if you look online? There's so many options so what stands out to you on a website or something similar?

What percentage of your gross profits do you spend on payroll (including taxes, healthcare, etc)?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:11 PM PST

I've read online that it varies depending on the industry, but manufacturing and restaurants should strive for less than 30%, whereas service-oriented businesses may run higher than 50%. Curious where people stand as I try to determine a budget for our fledgling consulting firm.

Looking for an inventory control app

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:20 PM PST

Hi folks,I'm trying to find an app that will suit my needs. I need an app that will allow me to scan barcodes of items that I'm about to ship as well as items that are incoming, preferably with myself phone but I'll get a portable barcode scanner if needed. I need the app to then create a csv file with what was scanned so I can use it to update inventory quantities across all the platforms we sell on. Does anyone know of an app or software that can do this? Thanks!

Buying into a business I work for or starting my own in the same area?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:16 AM PST

Hi guys, I got some good advice last time from here so I'm asking a new question in hopes I can get some insight. Since the last time I have moved areas and started working for a new company and have been working there for about a year and a half. This business is a family owned car audio and accessory installation shop in Australia. It's a small 3 person team doing day to day operations. My boss works in the shop doing sales, admin and installations. We have another guy working for us who mainly installs, and there's me who does a bit of everything like the owner. I've also taken the helm to give the shop direction and focus. It's gone from a store that was quiet for a lot of the time to busy almost always and I'm pretty sure we're on track to actually making a profit this year whereas this time last year we were 9k in the red (boss is open on profits and losses, which is nice I guess).

Now before I started here I was fully expecting to launch my own business in the same industry. Since starting here though I have found purpose in bringing this shop around and find it "safer" to be trying different things to see how the business reacts rather than find out when I'm on the bones of my arse trying to get a business going from scratch.

Now the boss is not of this industry and it's definitely not one he'll be wanting to hold on to for long. He bought into it as a way to move his family to Australia and has successfully done so. From what I gather though through casual conversation he would probably sell if the right price came up.

My question is whether or not I should continue to build this business up and, once my finances allow, partner with him to allow him to take a back seat to operation (this is preferable for me as opposed to complete buyout due to finances mostly) OR should I venture out and start my own?

I have a lot of the basics for my small business already set up. A business name and registration, a website and socials. I've actually already had a couple of happy clients from a while back too. What I don't have is a workshop to work out of or a reputation in my area. There are also all the processes and accounts already in place where I work with adequate buying power and good relationships with our suppliers.

In saying that though in my eyes the company I work for has a while to go before I can confidently say I am happy with it. I have quite a long to do list that covers pretty much every corner of the shop inside and out. No massive expenses (yet) but plenty of time needs to be spent on it in between jobs. I have been chatting to a few other people as well and most are saying I shouldn't be "fixing" his business as it will cost me more to buy in later and I totally get that. But if I am to buy in I'd prefer to have all these little things out of the way first and like I said before, I like testing different things to see how they work before it affects my personal bottom line.

As a side note I have an awesome working relationship with the owner and his wife that balances the books. The other installer and I were super rocky to begin with coming from different places but similar years of experience but we've worked it out and get along well as well.

I guess I'd just like to open it up to you guys and get your opinion on what my options are.

Should I stay or should I go now?

    Cheers in advance 👍

From Pre-Seed to Series C: Startup Funding Rounds Explained

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:22 PM PST

I have written an article on Startup Funding Rounds. Need your opinion to improve my writing. Also, Please suggest me topics that you guys will love to read. In this post, I have explained only up to Series C Funding. Most commonly, a company will end its external equity funding with Series C. However, some companies can go on to Series D and even Series E rounds of funding as well.

Companies that do continue with Series D funding tend to either do so because they are in search of a final push before an IPO or, alternatively, because they have not yet been able to achieve the goals they set out to accomplish during Series C funding.

Understanding the distinction between these rounds of raising capital will help you decipher startup news and evaluate entrepreneurial prospects. The rounds of funding work in essentially the same basic manner; investors offer cash in return for an equity stake in the business. Between the rounds, investors make slightly different demands on the startup.

Service business owners - is this a viable idea?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:16 PM PST

    Hi r/smallbusiness,

I'm thinking to start a freelance writing business (part time for now).

I plan to offer services like:

    • Case studies
    • Press releases
    • Ebooks/E-guides
    • Blogs/Articles

My target clients would be small service businesses in areas like:

    • catering/food services
    • cleaning
    • junk removal

I firmly believe that all businesses can benefit from such content. And those are the businesses I'm interested in working with for various reasons.

    My questions:

Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?

Clover Points of Sale Breaking After a Year

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:42 PM PST

I manage a small business that operates a few coffee shops. We use Clover as our POS and have had the system for about a year. After our one-year warranty expired on our hardware a few months ago, three of our registers have stopped working over the past month. All three times we've contacted customer support; the first time we were able to get a no-cost replacement, but after that we've been charged upwards of $600 for each replacement. As far as I can tell, nothing has happened to these devices that would've caused them to break (they're stationary in the stores and have not been moved or dropped).

Has anyone has a similar experience with Clover hardware? It seems a little too coincidental three of our machines broke right after our warranty expired. Is there any kind of recourse with Clover to get them to replace the machines?

    Another naming post

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:42 PM PST

I've made my own scented wax for a long time now because it's Texas and when it rains, it's wet dog season.

I recently was asked about selling the bars of the wax and soaps I make at adoption events for donations to the 501c3 non profit dog rescue I'm on the board of.

I was thinking I'd need a catchier name than the rescue name but it took us months to come up with that & I only have a few weeks to get this together.

    Any ideas?

Increasing odds of getting paid and buying from wholesale houses

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:27 PM PST

I have been doing HVAC by myself for a while now but have been lucky enough to not run into very many payment issues. What are some ways I can prevent myself from losing money from a customer that won't pay me for a service call or install?

Secondly, I was wondering how one goes about getting an account with a wholesaler. Will I have to pay fees? Do I have to have my contractors license? (My state only requires contractors that make over $4000/job to have a license)

    Thanks!

Anyone have less costly alternatives to stripe or PayPal for online credit card processing?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:42 PM PST

Online only business I manage is taking off, credit card processing fees accounting for over 10k a year now. Any good alternatives out there? We're evenly split between stripe and PayPal right now. Little bit leery of fraud, but we are a niche business so I don't think it will be a big problem, but you don't know what you don't know.

    College Consulting Business help

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:44 PM PST

Hello everyone, I am in the final stages off launching my college consulting business. The business will be focusing on one specific college and my target customers will be freshmen - juniors in high school. The school that I will be helping students with is really competive and has a lot of students apply each year. Over 50k students apply every year and it continues to grow. My plan is to charge 100 dollars for a video chat consulting session. I have run through my session takes about 45 min to an hour without questions so should be 1hour to 1.25 hours. I have helped people get into this school before and they appreciated the help so I though why not make a website and try getting some customers. I just had some questions on how I should find potential customers? If you search for on google for "college name" admission help or guarenteed admission almost nothing pops up. So my SEO should be relatively high but how else should I advertise? Also all my information can be found on the internet but would take at least 8 plus hours to find and comprehend it all. Does this businees plan seem to have a good chance to suceed and any tips from people would be greatly appreciated. Im going to start it no mattee what. Wont cost me a lot just domain name and website service each month. Thank you all.

Please excuse my grammar. I am on mobile.

Thinking about taking over my moms small town pizza shop, but I don’t know where to start..

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:07 PM PST

A little background, Im 25 years young, no college experience, was born in the pizza place (not really, but pretty much) worked there my whole life, can do all the day to day jobs very well. I'm considered a manager already and I find myself wanting to take over for mom. She's owned it for 25+ years and is the best pizza place in our town, voted by the people. I know I need to have a talk with her to see what she is thinking, but don't really have a clue where to start! Thanks for your time, I'm a first time poster and sorry for spelling I'm on my phone.

    Fake reviews on Google

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:54 AM PST

Hi everyone, I was looking at some small business in my area and looked at their reviews when I came across one particular called saroye store. They are very clearly faking reviews. They have over 50 review for a corner shop/convince store, which is way too high. Not to mention most reviews are 5 star from people who only reviewed them and have Indian names in a very white and black part of the UK (very few Indians live here). I was wondering what I should do as it seems unfair and was wondering if anyone here could help. This is a link to the reviews as proof https://www.google.com/maps/place/Saroye+Stores,+101+Pixmore+Ave,+Letchworth+Garden+City+SG6+1QX/@51.9768466,-0.2151489,16z/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1sConvenience+Store!3m1!1s0x4876325fd64de5a3:0x874f300a2b0e6627?hl=en-GB

How often do you use memes as a marketing tool?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:24 PM PST

I've been reading some articles about using memes as marketing and I think it makes sense that memes are a good way to market, if not possibly the best on Social Media platforms. They create engagement and are cheap.

However, I find it hard to keep up with what's relevant and hard to find a meme that fits in with my product. I was wondering if people use memes as a go-to for marketing and if so, how do you keep up with what's trending and finding ones that work with your product?

    Branding & Logo Design Business

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm a graphic designer and I've done a lot of freelancing work in the past 5-6 years as a side project. After I had enough experience with my work, clients and tasks in general I've decided it's time to start my own business out of this.
I've started by reaching out to my old clients, which I can say was a good decision as I've got 3-4 projects in the first two weeks.
The problem is now I feel that I'm stuck as my main source of new clients is social media, 90% Instagram by the organic growth. I really feel like I'm using 30% max of my potential and I hate this, only because I really struggle getting new clients.
Do you think creating my own professional website would help me? Would it be a better option compared to just the social media?

What other techniques or methods do you think would help me? I really want to start learning, playing and testing something, like moving a step forward but I'm not too sure how and what should I start with.

    Credit card processing service advice

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:26 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm trying to start a small business where we offer exterior cleaning services for commercial properties. Planning on accepting payment in the beginning as check and credit card (would be a phoned in card number that I would process through some kind of terminal, I imagine)

Trying to find the best provider but boy oh boy are all these options making my head spin. I'm currently looking at Fattmerchant for the no-percentage markup on transactions.

Or do I just not worry about it for the moment and use something easy like square or stripe and wait to make sure things actually work out?

    Any thoughts or advice?

    • What are good website platforms? Wordpress, Wix, Squarespace?
