Mechanic hit a deer in my car (OH)

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:57 PM PST

I was needing some warranty work done in my car that I purchased two months ago. Today I got a call that the mechanic from my dealership that was driving it to another shop to get the work done and hit a deer. The damage is the the front passenger side of the car. The manager has turned in a claim to the shops insurance and he is guessing $3-4k in damage.

They are helping in getting the car repaired but should I look at getting more compensation from the dealership? Including another vehicle, financial, or any other Avenue or am I being greedy?

Need help, my parents have asked me to foot my health insurance bill

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:46 PM PST

I'm a 19 year old guy who is starting his first semester of college in January. I live with my parents and will continue to do that for at least the next year or so, along with my 5 other siblings. I would consider myself very healthy and have never had any big surgeries or been in big accidents, and I don't need any prescriptions or any types of drugs. Anyways my parents just surprised me this winter by telling me that starting January i would have to start paying for my own health insurance, which turns out to be $350 a month. I don't know close to anything about health insurance or how much it normally costs for a guy my age, but that much money will put a huge damper on my income for my time in college since ill be going Monday through Thursday leaving only Friday really for a full day of work. I've tried to talk to my mother about it, but she gets pretty touchy about the subject, last time i tried it ended up in a fight even though I tried my absolute best to not escalate it. She tells me that this price was given to her by the government and it was the lowest of the choices she was given. She uses that to shut down anything I say regarding it. I've considered starting up my own plan (if it would be cheaper), if that does end up being a solution, i'll definitely have some follow up questions for that route. If you have any questions, i'll try my best to answer them, thanks for reading.

    Rearended Limbo

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 05:54 PM PST

I was rear ended by a commercial tow truck in November. We were at a stop light and the driver was distracted and his foot slipped off the break. His truck rolled right into my car.

We pulled over to the side exchanged information, got a report and i actually called my insurance while we were there. He provided his info directly to the claims person and admited fault. I've got pictures of the damage, dash cam footage, plate information, police report, they have all of this.

Yet dude seems to have ghosted. My claims adjuster hasn't been very helpful as since day one they have pushed to have me claim on my end instead of using the drivers.

After some pushing, they're now saying they cant get in contact with the driver even though the evidence is insanely obvious. Between the dash cam footage, recorded statement and police report, its clear they were at fault.

It's been a month without success and I'm still being pushed to claim it on my own insuance by my own claims person. The driver has the commercial version of my insurance provider.

They have been able to speak to the policy holder but actual driver is MIA. I feel like I dont have any rights or say here and I'm not sure what else to do.

My trunks barely functional and any time my claims person calls its always "havent heard from him, just file on your own". i bring up my concern about rates going up and if I will be reimbursed for the deductable but I was told i likely wont see that payment returned as they arent sure the driver was covered.....from there it is my understanding that I should be filing under noninsured collision, which is a cheaper deductable but claims wasnt interested in persuing that.

Its a given that i want to change companies but is there anything else I can do?

Got $2,840 bill from insurance - in-network doctor sent blood to out-of-network lab

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 06:41 PM PST

Just got $2,840 bill from insurance - in-network doctor sent blood to out-of-network lab! Which is absolutely crazy.

Now, I did some digging and found that there is Surprise Bill Law in California.

    http://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/110-health/60-resources/upload/AB-72-Fact-Sheet-Consumer_Protection_for_Surprise_Medical_Bills-rev2.pdf

However, when I called my insurance (Cigna) they keep saying that in office visit and facility is different and that the law does not say "office visit". Now, how is that different? Shouldn't "in-network facility" be the same as office visit? I found the doctor under my listed approved in-network physicians.

Can't be discharged from hospital b/c insurance won't approve medication. [TX/Aetna]

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:15 AM PST

I recently had surgery (a spleenectomy). I was set to discharged on Friday but insurance is playing games saying I don't need a medication my surgeon prescribed. Consequently the hospital won't discharge me until they know I'll have access to the medication at home.

If it matters, the drug is octreotide, being used to treat a fissula on my pancrease since part of that had to be removed too. Insurance is saying "it's not indicated" for that use. Even lay people sites about the med seem to cite this as a common use...

Is there anything to be done to convince insurance they're wrong? How can they even make this claim, isn't that basically practicing medicine w/o a license, and to a patient they haven't even examined?!

In the mean time I'm basically being held prisoner in the hospital for no reason other than get the injection in the hospital.

Is there anything to be done to twist their arm?

Help on understanding why my car is a total loss

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:58 PM PST

I am currently leasing a 2018 Subaru Impreza. There is just shy of 22,000 miles on it. My lease holder was well aware that I'm a high-mileage driver - it was a high mileage lease for a reason.

Prior to the accident there was no cosmetic damage to the exterior. There was minor cosmetic damage to the interior. When I took my car to the auto shop I was told that the damage is not that bad and that it is repairable. The main problem was a broken suspension. the insurance adjuster told me that because of the high value of my car it will most likely be a repaired.

The next day I got a call from the same insurance adjuster telling me that my car was deemed a total loss. The cost of repairs is $12,415. I have a $2,500 deductible, so my insurance would only be responsible for $9,915. Now I don't know much about cars but I know my car is worth more than $10, 000. The insurance adjuster was really apologetic about jumping the gun and telling me that my car is most likely going to be fixed and he continued to say that because my car had 22,000 miles on it it wasn't worth fixing. He also mentioned something about my car having a high salvage price.

Quite frankly I'm freaking out here a little bit. I was under the impression that insurance wouldn't fix a car if the cost of repairs is worth more than its actual cash value. I'm pretty sure the actual cash value of my car is more than $12,415. My lease buyout right now is $17,900. So if they offer me $12,415 less my $2,500 deductible, then wouldn't that mean that they would be giving me about $9,915 to pay off a $17,900 lease?

    Am I missing something here?

    Consolidation help

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:00 PM PST

In the past year I have bought a motorcycle, gotten married, and bought a house. My wife and I now have 1 car and 1 motorcycle each, as well as the house that we purchased together.

All 5 policies are with different insurance companies. I know this sounds dumb but it just happened that way. Life comes at you fast...

The policies are paid in full for 6 months or 1 year at a time, and they all have differing end dates. I know we should consolidate them, but I don't even know where to start. How do we choose which provider to move everything to?

I know maybe the answer is just to "shop and compare them all" but that just seems so overwhelming. Could a broker help?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Car Insurance Cancellation?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 03:44 PM PST

Let me preface this with saying I'm dumb. I have a car whose registration ended this September. I moved out of the state in July so my cousin told me she'd buy it from me. My insurance policy ended in October, and I stupidly thought that if my registration were expired, the policy would not renew. It renewed. I contacted my insurance agency through their website after getting the first bill around mid October, asking for it to be cancelled. I didn't get a response and I kinda forgot about the whole thing. Today, I get an email saying I owe like $500 by the insurance agency. I told them I contacted them to cancel it before, and they said I needed to submit a plate return receipt. I go through my RMV today online and cancel it and sent it to them. The registration cancellation receipt says the registration was expired in September. Is there anything I can do to avoid paying the $500?

Travel health insurance CA, USA -> Switzerland

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 01:39 PM PST

My spouse has a Kaiser HMO through me in California. She is traveling back to Switzerland for about a month starting next week. I feel like an ass but it just now hit me that she almost surely won't have any health insurance while she's there (she canceled her domestic health insurance after she came here).

She isn't planning to need any kind of care while she's there. This would really just be "disaster insurance". But I don't really know where to begin when it comes to finding travel insurance plans or how to evaluate them. Can anyone point me in a direction?

Got side swiped with conflicting stories

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 12:05 PM PST

So some background, I was on my home from work near an intersection on the far right lane, the traffic was building up due to a red light, I see an SUV attempt to get in my lane from the far left lane to avoid being stuck behind the traffic. He's approaching my lane and I lay on the horn but he's still moving over and ends up side swiping me and pushing my car to the curb which ruins my rims. His insurance claims that I'm at fault because I sped up to prevent him from moving over, regardless of what happened, isn't it his responsibility to make sure it's clear to move over before doing so. First time ever doing this on my own and not sure what to expect. Called his insurance to file a claim and sent them pictures of my damages. Now I'm waiting to get a call back but don't know how to proceed from there.

TL;DR lane bully tries to force himself into my lane and ends up side swiping me but he claims I sped up even though he pushed me to curb causing damage to my front right rim.

Advice for a rear-end in Texas

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:37 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

My sister was hit by a somewhat coworker of mine in her brand new car.

My sister had never been in a car accident before and this coworker convinced her it had to go through my sister's insurance... My sister noticed she walked into a bar so after a phone call to her insurance, they told her she had to get the other driver's information.

The girl was acting extremely shady, was only giving her 12 out of 13 numbers from the policy, kept saying she had somewhere to be. My sister decided she would call and file the claim right then and there and the agent requested to talk to the girl and she kept walking away with the phone.

Now the girl is texting my sister and telling her it's best they settle it without insurance because her aunt works with her insurance company and is telling my sister her premiums will go up even if it wasn't her fault.

Can she pretend to be my sister and cancel the claim?

Also, as I was writing this post, my sister is on the phone with the insurance and they cannot find the claim even after having provided the claim number.

    These Dental Plans?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:30 PM PST

So im getting health care through healthcare.gov and i saw that they had add on dental plans that were 10 and 15 dollars a month.

I sent a local high rated dentist office the $10 plan and they said its super exclusive and low reimbursment and doesnt have much support in the area/isnt PPO, and said they offer this in-office package: https://mysmileadvantage.com/location/oakville-dental-care/

However, there is a PPO through the healthcare.gov add ons that's $14 a month. Here's that plan: http://files.dentalcareplus.com/exchange/2019MissouriDT.pdf

Now, i need a deep cleaning/scaling or what not at the very minimum, plus ive never had my wisdom teeth out, etc. Im overdue. Just to put what i might be doing into perspective.

Should i go with their in office smile advantage plan or shoot for the $15~ a month cheaper dentalcareplus plan?

[Advice Needed] CA: Insurance company quoted after seeing driving record, now they don't want to honor it

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:08 PM PST

First time poster here, so please let me know if you need more detail.

So my girlfriend was in the market for a new car and we were shopping for insurance quotes at the same time to make sure we were within budget. We contacted one company that seemed to be the cheapest to have them give us one final quote.

They pulled up her driving record and indicated she had a ticket and an accident in the last 3 years. I know, I know.

The agent brought up her record and we know this because the agent brought up an insurance claim that my girlfriend didn't even know existed from an "accident." Her parents filed a claim when she hit the side of their house. Oh well. The agent proceeds to give us the quote which was higher, but still within budget.

Fast forward two weeks and we call Geico to start the policy after finding the right car. It was the lower model car as the original quote and now they want to charge 2.5x the monthly premium. The customer service agent claimed the quote is not valid because the accident information was obtained after they quoted us. The problem is that it was NOT. They are the ones who brought it to her attention and they proceeded to quote us and even sent an email with a reference number. They will not honor it even with the reference number.

What can we do about this? Can they do that? I know they are on a recorded line and they could pull the call any time.

Do I contact the insurance commissioner? If so, would this resolve my issue or would they simply slap the company with a fine and we're still SOL?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Issues post claim

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 07:48 PM PST

I'm having some major issues after getting my car back due to it being rear-ended.

    1. The car does not drive the same, the steering wheel shakes at various speeds. I brought the car back to the shop and they said to try new tires & re-balance them so I did. It fixed some of the shaking but the wheel still shakes around 65-75 MPH. The shop said they have no idea and can't do anything else.
    2. Panels/tail lights/bumper spacing is uneven and no longer symmetrical. I had the shop work on this when I brought it back and they fixed some spacing issues, but others arose.
    3. There are bumps on the floor of the trunk due to it being reinforced with steel plates rather than actually fixed. This makes my trunk less functional by making the floor uneven and it takes up space. The part should have been replaced rather than a band-aid fix.
    4. I am being charged for a rental. The initial repair took over 30 days so I called my insurance company to see if I'd have to pay for coverage over 30 days. They assured me I would not, now they are saying I may not be reimbursed for this.
    5. The cars value has decreased significantly. I took the car to see it's value at a dealership and they said it's worth $5,500. $6,800 worth of repairs were done, this should mean I would get at least $1,300 in 'diminished value' as the insurance companies seem to think it was worth at least that.

It's quite obvious that the initial estimate was kept low to avoid totaling the car in hopes that there would be little supplemental damage, however when things got expensive corners were cut to keep costs low.

What are my options? I called the insurance company and they said they'd be willing to pay for another shop to diagnose the steering issue, but the issues with the bumper/trunk are between me and the first body shop even though I had no say in how things where repaired. I've been dealing with this crap for over two months and all I want is my car back in the condition it was before the accident, but it seems like the insurance company/body shops have zero interest in actually doing their job. I am thinking my next step may have to be filing a complaint with my state's insurance office.

Please help! First time auto-insurance buyer -- need short term in Austin, TX

First-time auto-insurance buyer! I've done a lot of research but am still pretty clueless...

I need to purchase short-term (probably 6mo) auto insurance in Austin, TX as soon as possible. My mom is lending me her car while I temporarily live in Austin. Her auto insurance plan (in Detroit MI) is outrageously high so it doesn't make sense to add myself as another driver on her plan.

Any advice / articles / websites welcomed.

    Specific answers I'm searching for:

I got in a car accident over three weeks ago. My insurance company is nowhere to be found. (xpost r/legaladvice)

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 07:22 PM PST

    Hi all,

Three weeks ago, I wrecked my car. It had just started snowing and I hit some black ice and spun out. I ended up underneath a semi-truck, but my life was spared after I got hit the other way and ended up in a ditch. There was substantial damage to one side of the vehicle. The same day, I filed a claim with my insurance company, Root Insurance. This was 11/12/2018, I am in Illinois, USA.

The following day, I was contacted via email by my "Claims Liability Examiner" and I gave them a call. It was found that I was at fault. No worries, I had been paying for full coverage and comprehensive with a $500 deductible, which I have. I also have gap insurance because my car is bought on a loan.

Later that week, I was asked to release the vehicle from the tow lot, which I did immediately. My agent responded several days later saying that they were "out of the office" and would be getting on it.

Then, things started to get a little spotty. A week after I filed my claim, 11/19/2018, I got an email saying that I had an open claim with Root Insurance and that they wanted to let me know who was assisting me. I already had all of this information. After this, I have heard absolutely nothing (12/4/2018). I have called and left voicemails and sent an email to my claims agent three days ago with no reply. I have also emailed their customer support with no response.

Over the last three weeks, I have had to pay my monthly car payment and insurance for almost two separate months (payments due on the 19th of each month). What should I do here? Continue to wait? I've been told that insurance companies never take this long to follow up. Thank you so much ahead of time.

Is there any type of liability insurance to protect against damages as a result of having a pet in a rented residence?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 03:01 PM PST

I have a dog currently, but my landlord and his wife are extremely hesitant to allow me to have a cat because of potential damages such as odor from her peeing on carpets, scratching walls/furniture etc. I have no reason to expect the cat would cause any damage, she is young, healthy, litter trained and well tempered. Is there a type of insurance that will cover damage to their property from my pets?

I don't mean to undermine their decision if they decide against the cat, I'd just like to be able to offer them peace of mind that in the event something does happen, they're covered.

So around 2 months ago, my husband got into a small merge accident (we live in FL) . There was construction ahead in the right lane he was in, he looks through his mirror and sees a car at least 30ft behind and proceeds to merge slowly. The other driver keeps driving straight and doesn't slow down and proceeds to scratch the paint on the front left corner of my husband's car. The driver doesn't stop and of course scratched his whole right side as well. When the driver gets off the car he's shocked and insisted "he didn't see my husband" and then later that "he tried to break but couldn't" and then that "he lost control of the car and sped on its own." No one was injured. No witnesses. The police were called to file a report and when the driver repeated all these reasons, the officer sited him at fault for careless driving and issued him a ticket. The driver becomes furious because he felt he didn't deserve a ticket etc. Blame yes, but not a ticket. My husband felt bad for the man since he's in his early 80s and wished him the best.

3 days after the incident my husband files a claim with our insurance (usaa) and he submits all the evidence and the police report after we received it. Our insurance placed 100% at fault on the other driver based on the police report and the driver's statements. We took the car to get an estimate and its 1200. Our deductible is 1000 so we figured we can just pay out of pocket later(its just paint and we can wait) or try the other driver's insurance (state farm). We let usaa know we will be filing a claim with state farm since it was obvious to us he will be found at fault as well. We agree to let usaa send the information and evidence to state farm to proceed. My husband never got through to someone at state farm for a month and by the time someone answered it was to tells us their driver had finally made a statement and his story doesn't match ours so they will be putting the blame on my husband and not pay. Despite his own testimony and the police report. State farm suggests we just file it through usaa so the adjusters can resolve it.

    My question are the following:

If state farm finds us at fault, and usaa find the other driver at fault, the other driver could file against our insurance as well instead of his to not raise his rates correct?

And if it came to that, he would have no choice but to file with his own insurance(State farm) to get his car fixed but could he also just sue us directly (to save time and arbitration process) to pay for his paint job?

And if we do get sued, do we have to defend ourselves with our own attorney? I'm assuming usaa's attorneys wont represent us if we never paid the deductible correct?

**no one is being sued at the moment lol, I'm just a overly paranoid wife who also doesn't drive and would like to understand how car insurance legalities works :)**

Trying to get a 3 month old on insurance for december

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:20 PM PST

Hello all. My son was born Sept. 19th 2018 in California. I have BCBS of Texas through my employer. Shortly after he was born we found out he is going to need hearing aids. Today I was informed that he doesn't have insurance for 2018. I filled out the benefits enrollment paperwork and tried to email it to them on Oct. 20th. It's my fault for not making sure the email went through, and very unfortunate. My son has been to 3 specialist appointments this year that aren't covered and I now have to pay for out of pocket. He is, however, covered for 2019 by my insurance.

Is there anything I can do to get him on my insurance for the rest of 2018?

    Thank you in advance!

Need to pay deductible again on a sub-claim?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 02:24 PM PST

Long story short— My home suffered water damage from a leaky bathtub drain pipe. I called company A to do emergency mitigation which involved cutting a hold in my ceiling to dry out the ceiling and walls. Since the pipe was dripping over a long time (100 yr old house) it's wasn't covered but the estimated cost of the damage mitigation and reconstruction well exceeded the deductible. I filed a claim and then signed a contract with company A to hire sub-contractors to get the repairs. About a week later the bathroom plumbing was fixed and we sat waiting for the reconstruction to begin.

Couple weeks went by and finally the insurance company and company A agreed on a reconstruction amount. Due to lack of communication and general laziness, company A finally got a subcontractor lined up and work was scheduled for a few weeks later. That brings us to yesterday. About 8 weeks have gone by since the first emergency call went through to Company A.

Yesterday, I arrive home to find out (no call was made to me) that the subcontractor penetrated my water supply line upstairs which then leaked water to the freshly hung ceiling drywall in the kitchen. Furthermore, the water poured down the vent stack into the basement. Company A was onsite ready start the water damage mitigation process once more... another week of fans and dehumidifiers running day and night. Due to my frustration and complete displeasure with company A, I told them to get out of my house and then immediately called my insurance agent. They lined up Company B to come out and start the drying process. Company B were rockstars, 100% sympathetic to my plight and going above and beyond to make me feel like I made the right decision. Not sure if I did.

During a call today with my claims adjuster, he stated that since this is technically another loss claim, it will be filed separately and I am subject to another deductible. The original claim was never closed, work was never completed, money was never sent to me for the reconstruction price that was agreed upon. Why on earth would this be a separate claim? From what I can tell, my insurance should be going after Company A for the cost of the second mitigation and yet to be determined amount of new damage, all bundled under the original claim.

Someone, please help me understand how to handle this professionally. I'm at wits end and feel like I'm being screwed by all parties involved.

    Accident after renewal letter.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:48 AM PST

    Hello,

So my partners insurance is due for renewal, changing insurers because of better offer. However, someone decided it was a good idea to reverse into her yesterday, she's obviously worried about the renewal price and other insurance quotes. Now my question is, it will be a no fault claim and she has 5 years no claims. She's had the letter for this year's no claims, will the new insurance company not accept that until the claim has been settled?

    Thanks.

About a month ago, I was in an accident (with my Mazda 6) where I was rear-ended by a pickup truck and was slammed into another pickup truck. I was not at fault for the accident and I was given two checks from the driver's insurance (AllState), one for property damage (approximately $6500) and another for bodily injury ($200). It has been in the shop for a few weeks and will be finished tomorrow afternoon. Should I give my insurance check directly to the repair shop, or should I deposit it myself?
Also, after the accident I had a sore back for about 36 hours. Everything seemed fine until a few days ago when I started getting a mild pain in the middle of my back a few days ago. Is this something I should bring up with AllState, or is it too long after the accident (1.5 months)?
