Made My Final Payment! Student Loans

    Made My Final Payment!

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 03:19 PM PST

My final payment cleared today. I'm now free of $23,000 in student debt.

I graduated in June of 2017 with my Master's with $23,000 in debt for my graduate degree. Got my first job that August making ~$70k. I paid roughly $1000 per month while living on my own in a high COL area. With some help from a large tax refund, and a bonus, I paid $23,000 back in just under 16 months.

Just thought I'd share my excitement with you all and give you some motivation to keep paying down your loans.

This article explains most of why I'm not freaking out about the current PSLF denial rate

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 02:49 PM PST

One thing it does leave out is that with the exception of one, very infrequently used plan (ICR) the rest of the income driven plans didn't come into existence until 2008 and 2011. Now - I will say that IMO, communication to consumers on this program was poor until the last couple of years so I am by no means saying that there aren't some issues and that some borrowers weren't given the wrong info at some point - I'm just saying I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some are interpreting the data. https://www.forbes.com/sites/prestoncooper2/2018/09/25/everyone-calm-down-about-rejected-student-loan-forgiveness-applications/#43b8db667f6f

EDIT-the number that does freak me out however is the number of borrowers with approved ECF's and no qualifying payments. As of August it was almost half. So - PSA - if you have an approved ECF make sure you are on an income driven repayment plan and not in deferment or forbearance or a non-eligible plan. Note that standard consolidation is NOT an eligible plan

    School Closing

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 09:29 PM PST

Will I be able to get my loans forgiven if my school closed down a few days after I graduated? The school has other campuses but the one I was going to closed another with other campus in different locations.

I am in the US and these are loans from the federal government.

Should I take out only the amount I need, or a little more and be able to start paying it back?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:13 AM PST

Hi, I owe 16k this upcoming semester. I currently have 10k in assets. Should I only take out 6k, or take out 10k so I have extra left over to pay start paying it back immediately? Also, which companies should i lean towards using?

I haven't been paying on my loans, and now I'm getting 5 or 6 calls a day from a company called "Reliant Capital Solutions"... I haven't answered the phone yet. What should I to to go from here?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:41 PM PST

edit: Title should say "try to do" not to to go.

I've looked up Reliant Capital Solutions, and there seem to be a really scummy company.

What should I ask them? What information am I required to give them (ie I would rather give them the last 4 of my social than my full social).

Hell, should I have a lawyer next to me when I call them?

edit: I'm reading the FAQ for help to.

Basically what I'm asking is how do I repay my loans with out getting fucked, and the company I listed sounds super shady.

Question about Fafsa regarding my age

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:57 PM PST

So I turn 24 September 25th of 2019(born in 1995). The website says the 2019-20 form will ask if I'm born before 96, and if I am then I am "independent". When does the 19-20 FAFSA run from tho? Is it just start to end? Or would I still need to use the 18-19 form? I intend to attend NJIT this spring (start Jan 22nd). I've heard that I'm considered independent the reward year of when I turn 24.

Ever held such animosity toward a company you paid them off out of spite?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 03:20 PM PST

I just came to this sub because I had to share my elation over just now paying off my loans with a lump sum to Heartland ESCI. They are such a scummy, scummy company that I cannot denounce them loudly enough. The final insult was having to include a $1.95 "fee" with my payment for the privilege of electronically transferring them money directly from my checking account. Ugggggh, I despise them so heartily.

What did they do provoke my ire? I had two loans with ECSI, one I paid off today and a second which was a $10,000 loan from my school that was to be deferred while I was working full time as a nurse and an increasing percentage of that amount forgiven each year over the course of five years (at which time the total would have been forgiven). EVERY year was a struggle to collect the correct signatures, stamps, letters, etc that they required to prove that I was working full time. In MULTIPLE years, despite having submitted all the required paperwork on time, they would lose the paperwork or suddenly request further evidence of proof (seriously, a statement of full-time employment, by my manager, after having already submitted that managers signature and stamps from HR to that effect). They then lost that letter in my final year of repayment. It finally took me sending an entire packet of copies of my paperwork (copy and save EVERYTHING) to be signed for on delivery before they finally forgave most of the amount. Why only most of the amount? Each year, a with each new iteration of a snafu by which they fumbled my account, the loan kicked into repayment, so I ended up paying them hundreds of dollars, (I estimate about $2000, but it's too painful to add up) that I never should have had to pay on the loan, as I remained a full-time nurse throughout that period. The rest of the details are just too much hassle to regurgitate.

Rant over. I feel like I should smudge my house to fully exorcise the memory of this horrible company. Seriously, I want my business to be done with them so badly that I am not even seeking to recoup the money lost in payments on the loan that should have been in deferment, but was set repeatedly into repayment due to the incompetency of this company.

Nope, I lied. NOW my rant is over. Thanks for being there r/StudentLoans through this adventure. ...Only 70K left...

How to check what past issues with credit were?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:17 PM PST

My fiance and I have been shopping around on several websites trying to refinance her private loans. However, she is getting denied on every soft credit offer for reasons of past delinquency and the recency of such delinquency. Although I do not control her finances, she has been very adamant on paying her loans on time every month for two years and has no other "hard credit" payments besides her car which she also pays on time.

The delinquency is puzzling her, and we are curious to find out what the delinquency factor against her is. Is there some sort of resource or governmental website that can show what this delinquency was for?

I need more money to pay for school, and I already have the max school loans and grants so I’m looking to get a private loan but my parents both don’t work, what can I do?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 09:43 AM PST

I live in another state and go to school here and live with roommates. My parents moved a year ago to a different state and made a nice profit from The house they sold and my dad and brother opened a business, but it's not exactly booming. They're working maybe 1 or 2 jobs a week earning very little and my brother just pays my dad cash. So no pay stubs. So my dad is basically out of work and so is my Mom, what can I do to get a private loan? Since I know they ask for pay stubs. Or am I out of options?

IDR Payment is at $0, how does the Federal Loan Interest Subsidy Work?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 08:29 AM PST

So I've been researching and found out the government will pay for the interest on my subsidized loans as my payments are at $0. Does anyone know how this works? Do I get a lump sum at the end of the 3 years, or do they pay it yearly or monthly? Also, if this is the case, does it make sense for me to pay just for the loan itself and leave the interest? Is that even possible? All of my loans are fed loans through Great Lakes. Sorry if this is a confusing question, just a confusing situation. Thanks for your help.

Pay on student loan while in school or wait until I refinance?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:00 PM PST

Is it a good idea to pay interest only payments while in school if I plan on refinancing once I graduate from school? Why or why not?

Where do I start looking to get Aid/Loans for prerequisite courses?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 03:43 PM PST

I have about 9 or 10 classes I have to take for pre-req to get into a 2 year program for Dental Hygiene. Since I wouldn't be accepted under any program while taking these classes, I won't qualify for financial aid as far as I understand. Where do I start looking to get loans or aid to take these classes? Or am I stuck paying out of pocket?

    Question about student loans?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:54 AM PST

After switching universities this year i am subject to a 30 day hold period for my loans i had withdrew. I am to pay before or on the 22nd of this coming month for the Spring semester. Here is my question, i am unable to currently pay out of pocket for my semester courses and my FAFSA only covers almost enough of it. Im maybe 1k? out of pocket if i were to pay. Will i be able to let the school use both my FAFSA and my on hold for 30 day loans i had withdrew? or will i need to receive my loans from the School before i am able to pay anything with them?

PAYE recertification has me at $0 per month but income didn’t change.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 03:38 AM PST

I recently submitted my recertification application. I attached my most recent tax return and my income hasn't changed since I originally applied for PAYE. I paid approx 300 per month this past year. Now somehow they are telling me I owe 0 per month. I don't want to screw up my forgiveness track by failing to make correct monthly payments, and it can't be possible that I owe 0 per month. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. This is through Fedloans.

Should I put off marriage while in PAYE?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:30 PM PST

I'm finishing my doctorate in May and including the current interest, I'm $181k in debt (all of it federal). I am still working on job interviews but my debt to income ratio will definitely be higher than 2:1 (I do not expect to be making $90k, maybe $80k max and hopefully $60k at the lowest), and the job might be in a high CoL area. My partner wants to get married in the next year or two. He has 0 debt and makes around $75k right now, but he will make more next year. Since I'm on PAYE I have absolutely no intention of being aggressive with it; I'd rather pay the minimum and simultaneously tuck away money each month to prepare for the upcoming forgiveness tax.

I know that getting married won't make him responsible for my loans, but how will it affect my minimum payment? We are both very frugal people so we could make it work, but I'd rather keep the minimum as low as possible for the entire repayment period. I know you can file together or separately -- I'm not really sure what the pros and cons are. It wouldn't be the end of the world to me to just have some sort of party to celebrate joining our lives, without any kind of legal follow-up, except that we are planning on having kids in the relatively distant future. Any help would be appreciated!
