Caretaker left cat without access to water for days and died as a result

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:04 AM PST

I went out of town for 5 days and a co worker offered to check on my 4 cats while I was away. I came home to find they had no food or water and their litter box hadn't been cleaned in days. My oldest girl was in really bad shape, she couldn't move her back legs at all. I thought she just fell down the stairs and broke her back. Took her to the ICU and the doctor ran a lot of tests. The doctor explained to me that nothing was broken. She was extremely dehydrated, likely due to not having access to water in days. This caused a previously unknown/undiagnosed diabetic episode which set her into shock. She suffered for two days in the ICU before the doctor told me she was only getting worse and a decision had to me made. There was nothing they could do and she was terrified and suffering. I stayed by her side as they euthanized her. That was about 3 days ago. My heart is in pieces. There is no signed document of my friend agreeing to watch my cats. But I have text messages of when I tried to check in on them, then 42 messages in the morning and another 4 hours worth of messages from this friend trying to blame me for not reminding her and not telling her about an undiagnosed condition and even blaming me for trusting her.

I know I'm angry and grieving. But because of what this person did my cat suffered for days until I had to let her go.

Is there anything I can do?

[UPDATE] I have been paying for my entire apartment buildings water heating! And my landlord’s response was: “If you don’t like it- just move out!”

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 05:51 PM PST

Here is the original post in case you are not up to date on the situation.

I have managed to uncover (for the most part) the cause of my exceptionally high hydro bills (averaging $400CAD a month) in my apartment in Ontario, Canada.

Based on all of the advice I received from the original post – here's what went down after the comments got locked:

I managed to get onto my online hydro account – and discovered some very suspicious activity:

    • I noticed that each month was consistently high usage (every month I was consistently consuming around 2600 kWh. No matter the month – no matter if I was or was not using air-conditioning or heating during the month.
    • I also checked the specific weeks where I was on vacation. I was not home at all and everything in the apartment was turned off- I paid around $70 for each week I was away. A total of $140 I paid when I wasn't even home for two weeks!
    • Furiously, I called the hydro company and asked them to look further – she told me the usage she is seeing is very unusual – it appeared as if the unit Is vacant (consistently high consumption without much deviation).
    • She also Informed me that an inspector would be coming any day now...

The inspector came to the apartment a few days ago, and accessed the meter (which was in the basement beneath the restaurant):

    • I was in school at this time so my boyfriend was there when the inspector came.
    • The Inspector noticed that the plumbing in the apartment for the hot water supply feeding each unit (possibly also the restaurant) were combined.
    • The closest tank in circuit (mine) was doing all or most of the work for the entire building! Feeding hot water to all the units.
    • To prove this further, the hydro company closed the cold water intake to our apartment – and we were still receiving hot water! Meaning the next closest tank in the circuit (our neighbor) was feeding our hot water.
    • Also, our hot water tank was feeding the cold water intake of the nearest hydro tank (the apartment next to us).

After emailing the landlord multiple times and waiting days for a response from him – he finally only came because now one of our neighbors was not receiving hot water. We noticed that he was in the basement doing something (probably fiddling around with the plumbing). After he left- we stopped receiving hot water ourselves. I had to shower at the neighbor's house yesterday because of this mess.

Yesterday my boyfriend confronted the landlord when he came to "see what's going on." My boyfriend recorded the entire conversation in case we will eventually need it to support our case.

    • Instead of getting a professional plumber to come and actually fix his mistakes. He is just poking and prodding at the hot water pipes (literally) and pretends as if he has any idea what he is doing.
    • My boyfriend insisted that he get a certified plumber come and FIX this massive disaster - and the landlord just complained about money and says that we should do it. (as if we haven't already done enough).
    • The landlord was just complaining the entire time and even said "If you don't like it- just move out!"

I am almost certain that the landlord was aware of what was going on with the pluming in the building before we moved in

    • Due to the fact that all the tenants before me have dealt with the same high hydro bills and have made complaints before (but they were all old and probably did not know that it was wrong, or what to do – likely my landlords favorite kind of person).
    • Since my boyfriend and I are having a hard time showering and washing the dishes with NO hot water – we turned the hot water back on… meaning at this point we are carrying the entire load for the building again.

My question to all of you:

    1. What do I do now?... Can I trust my landlord to 'solve' this issue on his own – even though his "plumbers" will likely be rehired to do the work if we do?
    2. What happens to all the money that quite literally went down the drain for this - and is still currently going down the drain?
    3. Do I need a lawyer?

Thanks to all of you again – you have helped tremendously!

    EDIT!

    • Thank's to all of you who commented last night! - Unfortunately the comments got locked before I could even reply to any of you!
    • I am working on contacting some lawyers now and calling the tenant board on Monday!

Reddit is awesome! We seriously get shit done on here :)

(NY) I hit my brakes at a red light near the end of the road, and an accident between two cars occured behind me - two drivers behind me say I'm at fault

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:06 AM PST

I legitimately don't think I am because I'm pretty sure I did nothing wrong here. The driver was a pregnant women with her husband and started flailing her arms at my window in the middle of the street. Guy that hit her from behind says he needs my insurance while this lady is still going ballistic.

I tell them they're not getting my insurance and to go ahead take photos of my license plate all you want and call the cops. I also say something like " you shouldn't be trailing so close behind for this exact reason and I'm not arguing with you people". Anyway another man pulls over and starts defending me and gets into a shouting contest with the guy who hit the lady's car saying he was blasting loud rap music. At this point we've gotten out of the street to a gas station next to us and those two are still fighting and the pregnant lady is flipping me off.

Cop eventually comes and says I can go since my vehicle wasn't involved in the collision and I didn't break traffic laws. I wave bye to everyone and leave but I'm still worried about this potentially impacting me insurance wise.?

Dealership accidentally sold a car full of my stuff (USA, MA)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:18 AM PST

I will try to make this story as concise as possible. Basically, my old car was on its way out and I decided to buy a new one. I went to the dealer, test drove the one I wanted, put a down payment, signed a purchase agreement, started the financing process with my bank, did insurance, and got a valuation for my trade in. I signed over the title for my old car.

The dealer told me they just needed to wait for the money to be wired from my bank (USAA) and I could drive off. This was a Friday, so we agreed I would come back on Monday because USAA said the money would arrive in one business day.

I come back on Monday and they tell me that USAA called them and told them they filled out a form wrong and needed to resubmit it. So, I sign this new form and it is sent off via fax. They tell me they will have the financing either the next day (Tuesday) or Wednesday and I can pick up the car then. I tell them I can come back Wednesday as I am busy all day Tuesday.

However, because I originally planned to have the new car on Monday, I had told my insurance company to drop coverage on the old car and start the coverage for the new car on Monday. So, I asked the dealership if I could just leave my old car there because it was about to be uninsured and also because it was borderline undriveable (needed to be jumped every time I started it, transmission didn't go above second gear...). I explained that I would rather just take the bus home from the dealer and back on Wednesday rather than deal with driving it and then calling my insurance company to get it coverage.

The dealer agreed to let me park it on the lot for a couple days and specifically told me that I would be able to transfer the plates from it on Wednesday and move the $500 of stuff in the trunk over to the new car. If you care, the stuff was some winter gear in case I got stranded on the road, jacket, sleeping bag etc, as well as some typical car stuff: jumper cables, CD's, as well as some personal items like books and a pretty expensive gym bag.

I come back on Wednesday and they are obviously very upset at the dealership. I guess on Tuesday someone who didn't know better included my car in the lot being sent off for auction the next state over. They agreed to pay for new plates for the new car, and made several calls to the auction site trying to find out if they could retrieve my stuff. They said if they were able to figure it out with the auctioneer, they would send an employee down to pick the stuff up. I haven't heard back from them yet about whether they were successful.

Am I out of luck because they legally owned the vehicle? I have proof of the arrangement I had with them in the form of texts with a representative of the dealership apologizing and saying they did agree to hold onto the car until I got my new one. If they can't find my stuff, do I have any recourse? Should I ask them for the value of the stuff? Can I go to small claims?

TL;DR: Had an arrangement to leave my trade in at dealer until new car was ready when we would transfer plates and contents of old car, dealer accidentally sold trade in to auction house in another state, no idea if I will get my $500 of stuff back.

Small fender bender and given a DUI with a 0.0 breathalyzer

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:45 AM PST

In the Arizona, US. Title about sums it up.

I was going onto a street and I accidentally rear ended someone. Minor damages and no injuries or airbags deployed.

Knowing I last drank Thanksgiving I agreed to the brethalyzer and blew a 0.0.

During field sobriety they had comments to each other about my pupils not dialating right. I also had lost balance on probably the first of the steps they make you take completed the rest without issue.

Since I had nothing to hide I also agreed to a blood test. The officer on scene was trained and performed it.

To my surprise I was arrested (and released) under charge of DUI. I already have a meeting with a criminal DUI attorney, but was just wondering what to expect or if there is something I shouldn't say or do from here on.

Edit: Just did a 12 panel drug test for epace of mind. All pass

Employee Claims Disability to Prevent Firing

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:14 AM PST

We have an employee who has been underperforming and acting up. Consistently late, sometimes doesn't show up, When the supervisor approached them about their work, they blew up. They said they felt "unsafe" at work because of the criticism, and that they were being abused.

When a second disciplinary action took place, they owned up to their poor work, doubled down on feeling "unsafe"but then grew increasingly erratic until they finally claimed to be autistic and demanded that we accommodate them.

This employee has worked with us for over a year, and this is the first time they've ever claimed a disability. They have a history of lying, and escalating situations.

Can we still fire them? Or must we go through the motions?

Sheriff's office wants to interview me. Advice about the "interview" needed.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:58 AM PST

Another county's sheriff office called yesterday wanting to interview me over some items that my last job has on their shop yard. The deputy said she just wanted to get my side of the story and wants to do an interview at their law enforcement center an hour away.

Now growing up up my Father was a federal police officer, and he always said if I get arrested not to say anything until a get a lawyer.

My question is, since I'm not being arrested, would it still be wise to retain a lawyer to be present for this interview, or should I attempt to record this interview for review by a lawyer? Do I even need to take any steps to protect myself since it's just an "interview"?

    Thanks!

ETA: McKenzie County ND Sheriff's office is the one who wants to talk.

ETA2: Thanks for the advice guys! She wanted to talk today, but the roads were trash so I told her I didn't feel safe driving. I called a local attorney who I've used before and left a voicemail, of course it's Saturday so I'm sure I won't hear anything from him. If the deputy calls back trying to reschedule the interview, I will deny it until I have an attorney.

    Thanks again!

I think my job is a front for some sort of illegal activity, am I in any legal danger?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:53 AM PST

I might sound entirely crazy but I don't think I am, around 6 months ago I was job hunting and happened to see a 1 line Craigslist that simply said "Sales job, salary+commission NOT DOOR TO DOOR or pyramid shit".

So this mildly intrigued me, I emailed them and setup an interview. It was for a furniture business. They were paying $14.50 an hour flat, and 20% commissions, offered me the job on the spot after a very short interview.

So I started 2 days later in the "showroom" which is 3-4 couches and chairs that are old as hell and a few catalog's of different furniture. The thing is no one ever comes in, never orders anything, there are 1-2 phonecalls a week and half of those are wrong numbers.

The business isn't advertised anywhere, there is no sign or anything. I've made 0 sales in 6 months but then again I look at it like I'm being paid to literally watch Amazon Prime/Netflix all day well above minimum wage.

There's very basic "rules", I cannot go into the back warehouse for "safety reasons, no steel tip shoes etc". Which doesn't bother me, never get asked to lift or carry heavy furniture. However there are always multiple trucks at the loading docks all day long.

I've had maybe 20ish walk ins during this time, mostly people looking for a different business nearby and a few just people that looked through the catalogs but never ordered anything.

There are more security cameras around the building, on every door than my bank has. I know they are watched because a few times my boss who rarely ever comes in makes jokes "seen ya watching your phone all day yesterday!" When he wasn't in or "you took like 20 smokebreaks yesterday!" All in good fun because they know that no one ever comes in or buys anything.

My question is what sort of legal problems can I get in if they are doing something illegal that I have no actual knowledge of? Will my story of "yeah been getting paid for 6 months to do nothing, never went back there or thought anything was wrong or illegal!" Actually be believed?

My car was driven during its service at very high speeds, now my black-box score has been reduced and my insurance may increase

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:15 AM PST

During my cars service, which started at 10:00, and the receipt shows finished at 14:44 (can post all pictures for proof if needed), was returned with only 3 spark plugs needing to be changed. But when looking at my MoreThan SmartWheels app I saw a score of +3.2, compared to my consistent +10.0 that I've had since the policy started. The times on the app show that the people at the service centre took my car around the block in a busy pedestrian area at around school finishing time (friday they finish earlier around my area). The score on my speed statistics was -10.0, meaning they were speeding on every road by the looks of the map timeline, and the journey lasted 13 minutes (13:55 - 2:08)

This score has brought my average score down to 0 from what I remember being above 5, which means I am not entitled to any rewards or discounts in my next year of driving, I also have limited miles on my policy so may have to buy more because of this.

What sort of action should I take from here. I also would like the score taken off so I regain all the rewards I have built up this year, so I will need proof to send to my insurance company.

Ex-Roommate Threatened to Take Me to Small Claims Court

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:02 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here so let me know if I need to modify this post to not break the rules!

Names are changed to protect identities. I currently reside in Ashland, Oregon.

On September 1st of 2018, I let 2 new roommates move in on my pre-existing lease, Emily and Allie. The procedure is to submit an application to our rental company, they will approve you, and place you on the lease. After both new roommates submitted an application and the rental company told me they would be good to go on Monday, I went ahead and let them move in. I only asked of one thing-- for them both to submit a deposit. My previous roommate, Sarah, asked me to reimburse her for the deposit that she paid for in the first place, totaling about $2200. She asked for $1400 back, so I split up the deposit between the three of us, totalling about $466 each. I reimbursed Sarah officially on her birthday in late November.

Overall, the living situation was fine. There were a couple of annoying things, like the roommate Emily, she had a boyfriend I was not a fan of, she didn't clean enough, but other than that, nothing intolerable.

In October, I found out that neither Emily or Allie was on the lease. The person who told me that they were good to move in the following Monday went on Maternity leave that week. This was all brought to light because I got a call from the HOA that Emily and her boyfriend broke some of the rules of the complex. Since they were not on the lease, 1) they were not considered residents and they were in the pool area alone. 2) They were showing public displays of affection in the pool area.

I did everything in my power to get them on the lease, because now my rental company and the HOA knew there were people living here not on the lease which is a violation of the rental agreement.

Allie managed to get on the lease fine, but not Emily. The rental company wanted an additional $500 deposit because of her lack of rental history and low income.

On November 25th, I honestly told Emily if she managed to move out before the 1st, I would give her her deposit back and forgive December rent being paid if she left before the 1st. She said this was impossible, so I said okay. Let's have you pay prorated rent and I will give you whatever is left of the deposit after rent.

This was the agreement, until I found out on November 28th that she and her boyfriend were trying to move out by the first and would be expecting that money as soon as possible. Today, she picked up her mattress, and confronted me in the kitchen.

My memory is a bit fuzzy because there was a lot of yelling, but she walked up to me and pointed out everything that she had cleaned. She also said something along the lines of that she has connections at the rental company, (I think her dad works there), I used her previous deposit to "pay someone else off", and that she has the right to take me to small claims court for this issue.

I'm not sure she has anything against me. But there was a lot of yelling and I can tell she's going to do everything in her power to get that $466 back. Which isn't a big deal, but I won't have the ability to give her that money until I a)get paid by my employer or b)receive the deposit from another roommate.

I never said anything verbally about the time of getting her her deposit back. Should I still be concerned? What should I do to protect myself? I appreciate the help from all of you, thank you in advance.

Employer accidentally emailed entire company my FMLA status and attached medical documents

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:31 PM PST

This incident has taken place in Dallas, TX

My employer accidentally sent out a company wide email that had my FMLA status, along with attachments that included medical records / notes, last 4 of my SS#, DOB, full legal name.

Feeling very stressed over this as I was informed by a few anonymous employees and was provided partial screenshots to validate what happened. My company has made no attempt to contact me regarding this issue (currently on leave due to medical issues).

I was informed that another email went out to redact this email, however it still shows up in everyone's deleted folder when they look in it. Apparently HR is trying to sweep this under the carpet quietly (hence why they never notified me) and the IT security team is clearly inept if all my information is still available for anyone to see in the deleted folder.

I have received a fraud alert from my financial institution already and frankly freaking out. I don't know what my legal rights are or if I should get an attorney. I have not contact my company yet, but continue to get anonymous info from a few contacts within the company that my information is still openly visible.

At the end of the day I would personally not feel comfortable going back to my company if I knew my personal and medical (private) history was leaked out to everyone in the company.

Everyone would feel like they are walking on egg shells, especially management.

I am in a bad situation as is with recovering from my medical leave, but now having my medical information out in the open along with my personal info and now a fraud alert... it feels like a nightmare I can't wake up from!

What are the possible legal ramifications? Do I have any recourse if I decide to not return to work because of this?

    ****updated 12/1/2018****

Truly appreciate all the responses and gaining a little more knowledge. I have a few good local employment attorney's that were recommended to me which I will ask them about this next week. I am not sleeping very good because of all this extra stress and anxiety I feel knowing all this information is still out in the open, even at the work place!

I keep getting annon messages I am presuming are from employees at my work that send me updated screenshots showcasing my information is sitting in the deleted folder and still on the server network. Whoever they are, I truly appreciate them giving me this information. This is what is freaking me out, because what would stop anyone from simply taking the deleted file with attachments, renaming it, or taking new screen shots and sending out my medical and personal information to anyone they want?

I do not work in the health industry so my shared medical information may not apply as a violation, which I find very difficult to understand how in the world it wouldn't be violation regardless of what type of company you work for. I would have honestly thought that medical documentation that was for FMLA people with all my sensitive information on it would be protected regardless.

This is going to be a long weekend for me as I have to wait until Monday to start speaking with attorneys to find out what rights I might have. Best wishes to everyone out there, it's always scary when you encounter something for the first time and not sure what to do, and to have a place like this to get some insight on things.

My Abusive Parents Want Guardianship and Power of Attorney Over Me

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:57 AM PST

Hi so I've had depression and anxiety for 6 years now. Recently it's gotten pretty and I'm failing at college, I'm having a hard time finding a job and pretty much all I do all day is watch tv. I currently see a therapist and psychiatrist which has been helping but it's going to take a long time before I'am better. My family is also extremely verbally abusive. They do not understand mental health and constantly call me a failure for having depression and that they are ashamed of me. My parents just recently informed me that if I don't get better soon and I don't find a job, that they will kick me out. They also just told me that they met with a lawyer and plan on getting Guardianship and Power of Attorney over me and than have me admitted to a mental hospital. I am very scared right now as my parents are abusive and I do not want them to have Guardianship or Power of Attorney. Is there anything I can do to fight this? I am 20 years old and living in Washington State.

My Apartment managers booted my car, left a vague and unclear note, and this ultimately led to damaging my car. Now the owners are only willing to pay a quarter of the damage claiming it's my fault and that I am attempting to take advantage of them. HELP!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:44 AM PST

I'll do my best to keep this short, clear, and accurate.

A little background: I have been attending a college in eastern Idaho for the past 3 years. I graduate in 3 weeks and will be moving back to California for an internship later this month. During these 3 years I have stayed at the same apartment complex whose owners have always been kind and helpful to me. On the day of the incident (Wed Nov. 28) the new managers were to come by to introduce themselves to my roommates and I.

Wednesday night about an hour before the new managers were to come by I decided I was going to drive down the road and pick up some Taco Bell as I was hungry and tired after a long day. I went out to my car which was parked in the parking lot of my apartment and noticed a 3x5 notecard taped to the drivers side window that read, "Please call ( NAME ) at ( NUMBER ) if we are not in the office. Thanks!" I did not recognize the name or understand what the note could be about. I had a guess that it might be one of the new managers but was unsure so I figured I'd ask them when they came by later.

After I scrape all of the snow off the top of my car (it had been snowing the past few days) I get in my car and start to back out of my spot. I had only gone back a few feet when I heard loud noises of metal scraping on metal and what sounded like a loud crack. I stop the car, get out, and notice that there was a boot on the front left tire of my car! It was now wedged between the tire and the bumper/fender of the car. Luckily there was no significant damage to the fender but it did crack the bumper which is now loose on that side of the car. It also popped the tire and within a minute the tire was completely flat.

I called the number on the card but nobody answered. I then called the owners of the apartment and one of them came out to check it out. He apologized that this happened and informed me that they (the owners) would help me out. He could not get the boot off himself as it was bent up so he took the whole tire off, boot included, and informed me that in the morning he would take the tire to a shop, get the boot off, and have the tire repaired. He said that once the tire was back on we would go together to a local auto repair shop to get an estimate of the damage. He also informed me that the reason the managers placed a boot on the car was because they did not see a parking pass hanging on the rearview mirror in the car. That would be accurate as I keep the parking pass on the dashboard of the car, still within view of the windshield, so that it's not blocking my line of sight as I drive.

Now, here is a little bit of information that will be important later. There was already some minor damage to the fender of the car above the front left tire. There were some dents and rust from when a chain broke on the tire years ago. I never accused or claimed the owners of causing this damaged but I did not inform him that night that the dents and rust was already there. This was because I was so mad about the whole situation that I really didn't say much of anything to him at all that night.

The next day he brings back the repaired tire, we put in on and drive to the auto shop where the mechanic examines the car and within 5 minutes he gives us an estimate of roughly $1,600. I looked over the estimate and noticed that he had included repairs towards the fender. I then informed him, and the apartment owner, that the damage to the fender was previously there and that it should not be included in the estimate. I informed them that the only significant damage caused to the car by the boot was to the bumper. The mechanic then redid the estimate and now the cost for replacement of the bumper came out to $778.52. The apartment owner tells me that he will need to go home and talk to his wife about this and that they will be in touch with me soon to work this all out.

Fast forward to Friday afternoon and I am in the manager's office with the apartment owners. They inform me that they are only willing to pay for a quarter of the bill (so roughly $200) and here are their reasonings why:

    1) At the start of the semester I signed a contract which specifically stated that I was to hang the parking pass on the rearview mirror of the car. The contract also stated that any vehicle without a parking pass would be booted at the vehicle owner's expense.

    2) Since only a small portion of the bumper is damaged, they should not have to pay the full price for a completely new bumper and..

    3) Since I was "dishonest" about previous damage to the car (the dents and rust), they claim that there is no evidence that the damage to the bumper was actually caused by the boot and now believe that I am attempting to take advantage of them for money.

We obviously did not come to an agreement and I told them that I would like a few days to think more on the matter and that some time in the next week we could meet again to talk about it.

Guys, I don't want to take advantage of anybody but I also firmly believe that this is not my fault and would like the damage done to my car to be repaired by those who are liable for it. Any advice???

HOA saying we turned the garage to a living space

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:40 AM PST

Hey all, First of all we live in Henderson, Nevada. My parents have a couch, a love seat and a chair in their garage that they use when it is too cold or too hot to sit in the backyard so they go to the garage to drink coffee or smoke usually in the morning and sometimes in the evening. They have been doing this for the last 7 years they have been living there with no issues. Today they got a notice from their HOA that reads:

"NOTICE of alleged violation of Governing Documents November 20, 2018 Need to refrain from using your garage as a living space

The purpose of this letter is to notify you that conditions appear to exist on/at the above referenced property, which are in violation of the Governing Documents of the Association, specifically:

Governing Document: /Article 11 Section 11.2 No garage or carport shall be used for a living area or used for other purposes other than those uses normally attendant to a garage or carport. All lavatories and toilets shall be built indoors and connected with the sewer system."

To clarify there are no toilets or washrooms in the garage at all. I am intending to call them on Monday to see what exactly they want. But in the meanwhile, does that governing document forbid them from sitting in the garage at all for couple hours a day? It just seems so bizarre that an HOA can dictate so much as how to utilize their home. Any advice is appreciated on how to approach this with the HOA as my parents really like how their garage is and also don't have room for the couches inside the house so they might have to get rid of them.

    Thank you

HOA Threatening Fines if I'm not home every day from 8AM to 4PM

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:09 PM PST

I am a resident in a condo building in SoCali. The HOA hired a plumbing company to re-pipe the whole building which involves some invasive work in individual units. The HOA has a property management company that manages building maintenance and projects.

So far the plumbing project has been a disaster. The plumbers are not competent enough to coordinate with the residents to gain entry. They flooded one apartment, etc. The intermittent (random without warning) water shut offs all day have been more than inconvenient. I personally have a 18month year old who spends all day at home with my wife and myself (I work from home).

The plumbers mandated a specific day to come into our unit. They missed that day (Tuesday), no one told us why and we had made preparations to be out of the apartment from 8-4pm , which is no easy feat with a 1.5 year old and no place else to go. I asked the plumbers on several occasions to give us warning at least the day before so we can prepare our place with plastic and have a plan for our toddler. They are vile, rude, and dgaf so they just ignore us completely. So come today (Friday) they knock on the door while everyone is asleep and no one hears it. I wake up to an email saying we denied them entry and each day of delay will result in $2k fine. I emailed the Prop Mgmt rep and said I had no idea anyone knocked and of course we need some warning when they need to be in our unit.

The rep maliciously complied and said they will be there Monday and they need access from 8-4 every day for the rest of the project (which has no set end date). This is why I'm writing. This isn't reasonable and can imagine it may be illegal. They won't need to get into our place every day. From what I understand maybe Monday, once for the city inspection, and one for the dry wall repair. Of course we want all that done and are "happy" to oblige but we can't live for a month with a "go" bag waiting for a knock on the door at 8am for them to do loud, dirty, invasive work while we'd normally be eating breakfast.

Do I have any recourse with this blanket "advanced notice" I received?\

Edit: I am actually a tenant and have a landlady. My landlady is older and doesn't have email or a car, so asked me to be the point person as I'm capable and present. Landlady understands the absurdity of the request and we are on the same team.

UPDATE: Condo board member slipped a note under my door with the same threatening language which included a bit about getting a locksmith to open the door if we don't let them in (which has never been the case nor insinuated by us). I marched down to the condo president's unit and asked nicely as I could "WTF is this...". Reiterated everything I shared here (having a kid, the dumb threatening language, the absurdity of the demands). He said. "Its fine", I can ignore the note. Which made me angrier that I got it in the first place then...I gave him my cell phone number and said, anytime you need to come in you can call me in advance. He sheepishly agreed.

I appreciate everyone's help. It was a great sanity check if nothing else.

[NYC] Husband's ex-wife is crazy. She assaulted someone in public because she thought she was me. Police say I can't get an order of protection.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:46 AM PST

This is a long story, so sorry and thanks if you stick through it.

My husband (together 5 years and married 3 years, we'll call him Jack) was married to his ex-wife who we'll call Katie for 5 years. The marriage dissolved for a myriad of irrelevant reasons (she emotionally cheated, dead bedroom, she was part of a crazy cult religion) and the divorce was very messy. She dragged it out as long as possible (2 years), demanded crazy things, and was upset when all she got was minimal assets and alimony (short marriage, no kids).

Me and Jack got together before they divorced, but long after they separated. However, when we got together she went around telling everyone (friends, family, even co-workers) that Jack had previously and was currently cheating on her because they were not legally divorced. We found out that apparently she was livid that he had "moved on so quickly", believing he should've been distraught after their divorce. Thankfully the majority of people ignored her, but this was just the start of the harassment.

Me and Jack have endured constant harassment from her that we can never prove is directly her. For FIVE YEARS there has been at least once a week an anonymous e-mail, facebook or other social media message sent to me that just says things like "slut"/"whore"/"home wrecker", etc. There's been "anonymous" rumors spread around their very small business network (they both work in the same specialized field) that he abused Katie, that his new wife (me) is a mail order bride (... from Vancouver, Canada?), and that we committed immigration fraud to get me here (100% not true, and the most concerning considering the current climate).

Since we could never get a solid piece of evidence it was Katie (despite knowing it was her), we turned our heads and just carried on being grateful that no one believes her crazy. We discreetly avoided events we knew she'd be at, which wasn't too hard because she is an active blogger.

Until October 1st. All three of us ended up at a local performance for a mutual friend of theirs (to friend's credit, he didn't even know she knew he had a show and didn't invite her, someone else did who was with her). We saw her when everyone was already seated, food was already at the tables and we didn't want to just bail. She seemed to keep it together during the performance, but she didn't ONCE look at the stage. She just glared at me the entire time, like she could bore a hole through my head with her eyes if she tried hard enough. Directly after friend finished, we paid and left. She caught us outside the venue with her own friend clearly trying to calm her down and tried to SPIT on my face. Thankfully she missed, but she screamed some profane stuff at my husband and then booked it back inside.

We went to the police about this incident, but they said with no harm done and no proof they couldn't do anything.

This brings me to this week. Everything we know we learned for a close, mutual friend who they both share and we trust this information completely. Apparently while out Christmas shopping Katie saw someone who must've looked almost like my twin. She apparently followed her into a female bathroom at a Starbucks and smashed her purse into her face. I don't know what was in it, but she broke the poor girl's nose. Witnesses say that she followed her out of the bathroom, saying something like; "That's what you get for being a fucking whore! How does it feel being his slut now??"

Katie then realized the girl wasn't me, freaked out and ran for it but there was a cop just outside who grabbed her and took her in. Her parents have bailed her out, but apparently there will be charges pressed and a court date. However she has no previous criminal history what-so-ever, and a very well-off family so we are very skeptical of anything serious sticking to her.

When we found this out we went right to the police and told them that she obviously thought this girl was me, and that we believe this is a solid indication that she would do me bodily harm if given the chance and we want a copy of the police report to get an order of protection. The officer got very annoyed and said they couldn't give that to us, and that because she never said my name or anything substantial an order of protection wouldn't be granted.

We are getting a lawyer Monday to figure out our options, but is this true? Do we need to have direct evidence of her saying my name / threatening me directly to get a protective order? Honestly at this point I'm just upset, at my wit's end and wouldn't mind any perspective I can get until I see a lawyer.

[UPDATE] Police won't take my claims of theft against my parents seriously, and I can't afford a lawyer or move out.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:01 PM PST

    From Alberta.

A few months back, I made this post regarding how my parents threw me out of the house after stealing $6000 from a joint bank account of mine they had no jurisdiction over.

Thankfully, I took a lot of advice come to comments, and found out:

    1. My great grandfather does in fact exist
    2. There were no loans being taken out by my parents from my account
    3. My credit score (from Credit Karma at least) appears to be nonexistent as it was before
    4. My Uncle (whom I share the joint account with) did not play a role in the matter

I've since taken the matter to the police, and have both called them on their non-emergency line as well as visited their headquarters, and they have taken no action whatsoever despite a submitted three-page report detailing all the events in detail. At one point an operator hung up on me telling me my case wasn't worthy of police involvement.

I double-checked the date of the bank account being opened (since my memory can be bad with dates) and found that it was created around the time we moved, which was the date of my 18th birthday, so thankfully they can't claim that I wasn't an adult at the time they took the money.

I wanted to take the suing route, but unfortunately, it seems as if they don't have the money to pay me back, meaning I'd likely be spending money pursuing the case and getting nothing back.

I should probably explain a few things about the original post as well. The reason I left the school after being booted out is that I was already stressed out about the diplomas, and now was in a situation where I had everything in my life just vanish. When I was in the shelter, I had no way to properly commute to the school and back, and even if I did, I felt that if I was to go to the school, I'd break in front of everyone and be unable to focus with everything else on my mind like getting out of that shelter and employment. Most importantly, however, I was worried that my parents would be at the school looking for me. Looking back at it, it was definitely flawed logic, and I have been attending an upgrading institution (at no charge from the public school district) to finish off the courses I essentially dropped.

I've since moved back in with my parents, as awkward as it is again, but I just can't stand them. I've been trying to get a job for weeks now, but the economy is such a pain in the ass at the moment. When I do manage to get a stable income, I hope to move out ASAP and cut as much contact with both of them as physically possible. I must have applied to over 100 different listings by now, and gotten only two responses, both of them being declined.

Thank you for all of your support. I honestly have no clue where to go from here regarding this situation. Of course, they're still trying to get me to pay the $250 a month despite the $6000 they took covering that rent for a long time, and expect me to "contribute to the family" on top of that. I hope you guys have suggestions, but if not, I thank you for at least being there to show me that even if nobody I know were to care, I still have complete strangers with kind hearts behind my back.

[Arkansas] Husband of 2 months took out $30,000 in high interest loans under my name without my knowledge. Where to go from here?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:59 AM PST

Found out through a declined loan letter & followed that thread.

I've moved our shared funds to a solo account, frozen all my credit cards & credit reports. What's my next step to protect myself?

Will probably be for responding, as I don't want him to see this.

My mom is deaf and faced discrimination at an interview with Target

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:20 PM PST

My mother is deaf, and had an interview with Target to be a Backroom Team Member. Target did the following:

    1. Target initially said they would provide an interpreter for the interview, but then there was no interpreter at the time of the interview
    2. The Target manager said it would not be possible to provide an interpreter for the interview or for any potential job training
    3. Target said that it would not be possible to work with my mom because of the communication barrier
    4. During this discussion, my mom was writing things down back and forth. The Target manager then stopped writing and just started speaking (which my mom didn't understand), and then asked her to leave instead of conducting any interview

Can this community please help me with any potential advice? Thank you.

    Please help me

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:26 AM PST

I am 15 years old and recently my family has been treating me very poorly just because of my sex. I am a female. As i keep getting older they keep trying to take away my rights as a person. You might be thinking "oh, this is just another white girl who thinks the world revolves around her!" No! I am not narcissistic..(not to a certain degree, i am not). Anyways recently my family and i went on a holiday to Malaysia. While i was there i received a lot of negative feedback on the way i dress, act and present myself as a 'young woman'. I wasn't really affected by it since i knew there was a difference of culture. But while i was there i was harassed by my own family (great uncle, aunty and mother) just because they thought i was presenting myself very poorly. They hit me with wooden sticks. Tied me up. Locked me inside a storage room. And even threatened to kill me several times. I have mostly healed physically, but I'm not really sure about my mental health. I keep having flash backs to the moment i was getting harassed. There were so many bystanders at the scene and no body thought to contact the police. I felt very depressed for the longest time, although i not its not sever. Anyways i did not keep record of my bruises because my phone was broken by my aunty at the time. I did not know who to contact! My family is very homophobic and sexist towards me till this day. I have thought of running away countless times but i know they will just file me as a missing person. Please help me. I don't know what to do. Oh and my mother told me not to even try calling the police because she would just murder me if i tried. Please help me. I don't know what to do.

New Jersey. We are caretakers in a historic home and also pay competitive rent to live there. Our landlord just told us we have to move before my due date in early April because minors are not allowed to live in their residence.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:10 AM PST

Basically the title says it all.

I told our landlord in mid-October that I was pregnant. So for the past six weeks she and the board that runs the houses have known our situation. It was never our intention to live in our house for more than a year after our son is born but I definitely wanted to live there for that year.

She says it's in our lease but I am away from my house right now and don't have access to it. Either way, I don't think because it's a historic home that they don't have to be held to the same standards as other NJ landlords. However they have allowed our heat to lapse, letting us live in 47 degrees for over 48 hours before sending someone to fix our crap thermostat, and there have been other things that have happened that are questionable at best when it comes to our rights as renters.

Still, it has the potential to be a funky situation because the house is historic and we are caretakers and employees. We do pay 1,400 a month to live there, so you'd think we'd have some rights.

Is this legal? What do I do? Also what kind of person tells a pregnant woman four months before her due date that she has to move out AND THEN tries to plan a face to face meeting?

Is she insane? She definitely DOES NOT WANT to meet with me face to face right now. Or maybe ever again as long as she lives.

Roommates are trying to illegally evict me [NC]

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:27 AM PST

I basically have the roommates from hell. They moved in in August, all 3 of us on the lease. I was in charge of paying rent and utilities and since day 1 they've paid me whenever they felt like it. I let it slide because I could either get the rent/bills late or fight with them over it and not get rent/bills at all.

Fast forward to this week, I move out to a new apartment and they sign me off the lease. I wanted to split my time between both apartments, with the original apartment being closer to one job and the new apartment being closer to my other job. Since I wasn't on the lease anymore, I paid half of December rent to one of the remaining roommates (who could login to the rent payment portal when I couldn't anymore). The other remaining roommate didn't get the other half of my rent because she owed me roughly the same amount of rent she never paid me for November.

This has caused an insane backlash. Both roommates think I owe the full amount of December's rent + cover the cost of the rent that I'm owed. The one that owed me money also picked up electric in their name and is now claiming I'm not allowed to use the electric and keeps turning off the breaker to my room. The leasing manager today asked me if I was moving out on the 15th like the roommates told her (when they requested the locks be changed) but I said no, I was staying til the end of the month but clearly I'm not going to since it's reached this level of crazy.

I don't know if I can get all my stuff out before the 15th and I know locking me out and cutting my access to utilities is illegal but I don't even know what to do about that. Do I call the cops? I requested they escort me out last night because I don't really feel safe anymore but do I just keep doing that?

(Update) Surprise divorce, husband cleared bank account #2

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:43 PM PST

    Update from https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/9ymz6a/update_surprise_divorce_husband_cleared_bank/?utm_source=reddit-android

    https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/9xicm3/husband_surprised_me_with_a_divorce_cleaned_out/?utm_source=reddit-android

I did all the lawyer stuff they needed providing things like bank statements to prove the money situation and everything and we did the filing with the court.

Turns out he did quit his job and before he left tried to make things worse by removing his card from the bills that he could and had the cellphone bill go-to a paper bill instead of paperless and tried a few others but when they wouldn't let him it now makes sense why he cancelled his credit card and mine. The bill still comes but since those were in his name I guess I don't need to worry about that just yet.

Now the bad news sadly, since they don't know where he is nothing really changes at all and now I have to wait and see what happens. There is another date over a month away to start the divorce but apparently that's going to become an issue too since he needs to be found or we wait longer again from what I was told.

One final fun thing I'm pretty certain he did but they won't tell me is I had two CPS people showup and inform me of allegations that I cannot take care of my child/provide diapers or food etc. Once I explained it all to them, and showed them what I had from my lawyer they seemed to just let it be. I guess partners trying to use them as a way to harass the other isn't anything new to them, except they will still be checking in apparently to make sure.

Husband choked at work and declined medical care. Boss made him anyways promising to pay the bill and is now refusing.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:34 AM PST

My husband (let's call him Paul) is a local 3rd shift 911 dispatcher in Iowa. They work 12 hour shifts and are not given any legitimate breaks. They eat at their desk when they can.

In the middle of eating a 911 call came in and in an effort to hurry and swallow the food in his mouth to take the call Paul started to choke. His partner dispatched medical immediately, but Paul was able to force the stuck food bits out on his own before they got there. Since he dispatchs out of the police station there were a lot of cops and office workers who rushed in to help aka witnesses.

Once medical arrived he felt fine, besides being a little shook up. Medical said Paul should probably go get checked out and offered to take him to the hospital by ambulance. He declined the ambulance via signature and verbally declined going to the hospital. His boss insisted he take an ambulance to the hospital and he again declined. An officer/friend offered to take Paul instead and his boss said "No, it needs to be done right" and that the expenses would be covered. Paul's boss ended up saying he HAD to go to the hospital and had to get there by ambulance.

So Paul took the ambulance to the hospital and was released and back to work within the hour. He finished out his work day.

Fast forward to now Paul's work is now refusing to pay for the $550 ambulance ride and the $120 hospital bill (both priced after insurance) stating the medical emergency was not their problem or fault. The ambulance bill is about to go into collections and his boss is taking the case up the the commission for approval or denial, but has made it clear they don't think it is going to get approved.

Paul loves his job and doesn't want this to come between him and his employer but, also doesn't want to front the bill. He only agreed to go because he was told it would be paid for.

Sorryish this got so long winded. Do we have any ground to stand on?
