Impaired Driver claims someone else driving Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:41 PM PST TL;DR What happens when a driver totals their car while impaired, but claims someone else was driving? Hey Reddit, just curious if someone can settle a discussion amongst some co-workers. I work in emergency services in Ontario. We frequently respond to serious car accidents where the owner of the vehicle is at the scene, but claiming that 'a friend' was driving, and that that 'friend' (whose name they don't know or won't state) left the area prior to our arrival. The owner is often clearly intoxicated, but witnesses either don't exist or cannot be certain they saw who was driving. IME the police typically decline to lay impaired driving charges in these situations, My question is about the insurance ramifications for the owner. Frequently their vehicle is a total write off, along with other parked vehicles, outbuildings, trees, etc. Who covers those costs, and what happens to the owners insurance post-accident? Just curious, as my sense of karmic justice is offended when it seems like these drunken a-holes are getting off consequence free. I'd also like to be able to tell them what the insurance consequences are likely to be, so we can persuade them to fess up to driving and avoid having to send search teams out into a field at night for a likely non-existent driver, who might be lying injured somewhere. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Condo water dmg from unit above Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:29 PM PST The HOA found the unit above 100% liable, but now the owner above me is saying my faucet was leaky as well and contributed to the mold behind my kitchen. Originally, she agreed to repair my kitchen but recently stopped cooperating and is no longer completing the repairs. Is there any point in filing a claim to my insurance? How would it be handled? My own auto insurance giving me the runaround..? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:22 AM PST I'll start with context. I was involved in a not-at-fault accident on 10/18/18 (rear ended at a red light) that pretty much left my car unable to be driven. The other party did not have insurance on their vehicle. My vehicle was towed to a yard and has been held there since. (picture of car https://imgur.com/a/ITSdZmo) I had to wait on the police report before filing my insurance claim per the call centers instructions, which took 12 days (it had to be amended due to my information somehow being wrong) so I was not able to file the claim until 10/30. The adjuster (lets call her adjuster A) contacted me two days later, asked for pictures of the vehicle, and to sign papers at the tow company saying the adjuster would be coming to inspect the car etc. I was unable to contact her for about two weeks after that, as she did not answer calls and had a voicemail box that was not accepting voicemail, nor did she contact us. During this time we called the yard and they confirmed that no one had been in to see the vehicle. We were contacted by what I assume was another adjuster due to "adjuster A" not being available. He was unable to give us any information, so I don't know why he contacted us. After several more days of unsuccessful attempts to get in contact with "adjuster A" I was able to get her supervisor's email and let her know what was going on. She got back to me later that day and assured me my case would be transferred to another adjuster. He contacted us the next day (by accident, he said he was trying to call the yard the car was at) but it's been silence since then. Calls not being returned even after voicemails being left almost daily etc. As of today it has been over a month without a vehicle and I'm growing tired and starting to feel a bit helpless. I come to this sub asking for advice as to what I can do. I need my vehicle asap as it's getting tough trying to get a ride to and from work. (Monday-Friday, 9-5 job) tl;dr In accident 10/18/18 Filed claim 10/30/18 Adjuster contacted us 11/1/18 No meaningful contact for over two weeks Supervisor emailed and claim transferred to another adjuster 11/26/18 Left in the dark by this adjuster as well, no response etc. Car still not repaired or even looked at as of the date of this posting (12/3/2018) [link] [comments] |
How to read an umbrella policy? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:08 PM PST Hello I was wondering if I am reading this insurance policy right. Picture of relevant information Is the correct understanding as follows?: The underlying insurance policy covers personal injury up to $1,000,000. After the $1,000,000 is exhausted the umbrella policy covers up to $4,000,000 or is it: The underlying insurance policy covers personal injury up to $1,000,000. After the $1,000,000 is exhausted the umbrella policy covers up to an additional $4,000,000 for a total of $5,000,000 in coverage. Thanks [link] [comments] |
New to the broker world... need advice. Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:08 AM PST I am a sales producer for a new broker, we just started up a few months ago. Coming over from the standard world of working for Allstate (a well known name with customers calling and coming in all the time, just for the name recognition) to now being the new guy, how do I generate leads? The owner has pretty much left it to each producer to make their own sales however it may be that we get the leads. However I am running out of pipeline, can I get any advice or ways to reach more people? almost every person that i have spoken to or given a quote we save them money for equal or better coverage its just the fact of reaching them.... [Advice needed] Chase Sapphire Reserve rental insurance claim? Car vs Car collision Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:20 PM PST Quick background (I have a couple other threads up for more in-depth but shouldnt be necessary). Got in an accident (hit n run) in my primary car and my insurance company put me in a rental. In the rental I rear ended someone causing minor damage. Due to minor damage and my first claim, we agreed we could look into settling without insurance. After thinking about it, I did start a claim/inform my insurance about the accident (figured it was a rental they provided, they prob would find out plus I wanted to be covered should estimates be high or the other car claims additional injuries). So I have just received word from the other driver whom was able to get an estimate: 2100 in damages. My deductible is 1k. Here are my outcomes that I see and I hope I can find some people that may have been in similar situations and can assist in sharing those experiences. Option 1: Let me insurance handle everything; pay my deductible and move on (rates will probably go through the roof as I have 2 other older claims in 2015) Option 2: Pay out of pocket for the other driver and Chase covers the rental. The few experiences I have seen some say it takes quite a long time to get the check from Chase but a) you get the points for the charge b) 0 claim amount so rates shouldnt be affected Option 3: Pay out of pocket for the other driver and Chase denies the claim. Basically cant have this happen due to the amount it would cost me. Option 4: Have my insurance cover the other driver and Chase covers my rental. This would mean a smaller claim so impact to rates is minimal Option 5: Have my insurance cover the other driver and Chase denies my rental. Similar to option 3 as I would be paying my deductible and the cost of the rental. I dont know if I would be able to "re-open" portions of a claim if the insurance company closes then which is I guess the biggest factor. Meaning if I try to go the Chase route and they end up denying me I will be screwed with the bill. I also cant let the other driver wait too long neither to see what happens. Any suggestions/advice/experiences please share! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:46 PM PST Earlier this evening, I was parking in a garage. As I was pulling into the spot from the right side and halfway in, another car driving pretty quickly tried to pull directly into it. I veered to the side of the spot to avoid being hit and drug the side of the car against a post. I did not realize this at first because the sound of honking drowned out the noise of the scraping. When I got out of my car, I saw the long scratches in the paint and a dent in the door. By the time I saw this, the other driver had driven off. I'm not even sure they realized what happened. Anyway, I'm 19 and on my parent's Geico auto insurance policy. I haven't been involved in any accidents or filed any claims before, but I'm afraid that filing a claim might wreck my rate due to my age. Tl;dr: -Hit post with car in parking garage to avoid being hit by other driver -Damage: Deep and extensive scratches in paint on side of car + dents
-Interested in filing claim, but unsure if it's worth it [link] [comments] |
Received Auto insurance decline letter from Allstate Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:56 PM PST But I didn't appy for auto insurance. However, I previously had auto coverage with them two years ago. They said it was a "glitch" which occasionally happens. They said it wouldn't impact my credit report and wouldn't show if I applied elsewhere for auto insurance in the future. Anyone ever hear of this? Should I be concerned? [link] [comments] |
Can employer health coverage exclude spouse’s injuries at work? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:51 PM PST Husband has a new job that provides family health coverage. The whole family will be under this single coverage. Reading through the benefits has me somewhat concerned regarding two particular exclusions. These quotes are directly from the benefits package.
I understand these clauses for the employees of the company. But does this mean that, as his spouse, if I am injured at work (totally different field) and have no other insurance, that my treatment won't be covered? I have nothing pre-existing at the moment, but my work is relatively hazardous. There's also a reckless activity clause. So i guess white water rafting is out of the picture too. Thanks in advance. Liability claim with rental car: what's the process Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:56 PM PST I rented a car from Hertz with the supplemental liability insurance coverage. While backing up in a parking lot, I hit a car's back door. I've exchanged information with the owner of the car and filed a claim to Hertz. (I have a personal car insurance with Geico, which has a pretty high deductible I believe.) However, Hertz told me it takes a week to process the claim and more than a month to finalize the decision. Their customer support number put me on hold for 3 hours. On the other side, the owner of the damaged car is angry because he can't get his car repaired. It's actually my first time getting into an accident. How should I proceed? And how can the other person get his car repaired earlier? [link] [comments] |
Did I got screw over by my home owner insurance? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:46 PM PST A while ago my skylight has leak due to the storm and because of that the water got inside my wall and it bubble up and damaged my interior bathroom pretty good. So I filed a claim with my home insurance which is National General. I have never had to file home owner insurance before and I know basically nothing about it or the whole process. They sent over a field adjuster who was an independent contractor that works for them. The guy told me I had to call this company Titan Restoration to do damage mitigation on the wall because it is still moist and to prevent it from doing further damage. He said it will be billed to the insurance directly. And he also said that he need a quote from them so he can make an estimate. I thought it was weird because he was the one that supposed to make the estimate but I just followed along because I didn't know otherwise. He made it seem like it was required before he can process the claim. So I called the company and they came over and put a humidifier and fans on my bathroom and had it ran for 3 days. They know the field adjuster's name when I mentioned him because I guess he works with them a lot. After 3 days it was still moist because during that time there was another storm and because the main problem was the skylight leaking it didn't do anything. I told him to take their stuffs away. They still didn't give me and estimate so I had to call them to have an estimator from their company over to inspect it and give the field adjuster an estimate. So after that he send his report to the property adjuster from the insurance company. They ended up quoting it as about 1800 dollars in repair and my deductible is 500 dollars so they send me a check for 1300. That is how much I can spend to get my wall and skylight repair. They said they wouldn't pay for the skylight repair because it was normal wear and tear even tho it was the main problem. When I got the claim information in the mail I noticed that they paid Titan Restoration 900 dollars for the damage mitigation. So my question is did that 900 came out of what they were supposed to pay me? It seems so ridiculous because that Titan Restoration company didn't really do anything and my wall was still moist because the skylight was still leaking. What if I didn't get the damage mitigation or what if I didn't do it through them. I feel like that field adjuster screwed me over. I didn't know anything and was just trusting what he said and followed his direction. [link] [comments] |
Insurance to get license back after dwi Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:28 PM PST In NC. I got my license taken away 4 years ago for a dwi and the suspension has ended. I tried to get my license from the dmv but was told i needed a certain insurance policy before they can reinstate my license. I didn't quite understand what policy the dmv attendant was referring to, so I'm here on this subreddit looking for help and answers. Some kind of 30 day hold policy? [link] [comments] |
Health insurance options for Seasonal job Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:26 PM PST So this one feels kind of complex, but here's my situation. I am currently employed in TX, and have insurance through my employer. I have an offer for a Summer job in MA (June - August) that I'm inclined to take, but it doesn't offer health insurance at all. I think my plan is to quit my job in February, travel internationally March-May, and begin work again in June. This is my first time searching for my own health insurance, not having an employer-sponsored plan, so I'm pretty well out of my depth here. What are my options for maintaining health insurance, both internationally and then for the summer? Would traveler's insurance cover a stay to work in MA, if I'm officially a resident of Texas? How can I go about getting coverage if it's not during open enrollment? Can I just get a 3 month policy? I feel overwhelmed, there are so many unknown unknowns here! Thanks in advance for the help! Switching insurance to co-signer? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:19 PM PST Hello, recently i was hit turning left ona green arrow. Due to a bad driving history the police assumed i was at fault, charged me and my insurance company found me at 80%fault. (Ive learned to invest in a dashcam.) Due to this my insurance went from high to impossible to pay. My new used car is cosigned by my girlfriend to get a better rate. Im quitting work this month to finish my bachelors degree and will rarely be driving the car, but id like to keep it since its my dream car and we got a great deal on it. What difficulties would i have if i decided to put my co-signer as the insurance holder. What are the legalities on listing me as a driver vs not listing me. In this scenario were assuming ill only be taking around 10-20 within 10mile trips a month so the liability of an accident or ticket is really low, but i dont wanna be caught without insurance. Further more would it be legal for me to drive her car while uninsured? [link] [comments] |
Recently totaled car, question about letting insurance company take the car before an offer is made Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:15 PM PST Hi, so basically my car was totaled and I've filed a claim on it. The car is currently behind held at an autoshop and the insurance company is responsible for paying the daily fee. The insurance company said I'd get a call about the amount of money they're willing to give me for the car in 24-48 hours. They also asked me to allow them to tow the car somewhere where they won't have to pay a daily fee on it. (To quote the lady: "Grab your license plates, leave any spare keys in the car, and give the shop permission to let [insert insurance company name here] tow the car") I talked to some people about this and they said it's highly irregular for the insurance company to ask to tow my car somewhere before agreeing on a price. They're concerned that this gives the insurance company all the leverage (because they won't have to worry about the daily fee stacking up.) My concern is that if they don't have any malicious intent, this could sour the coming negotiation steps. I'd appreciate some advice on the situation. Should I call back the insurance company saying I won't let them take the car until a price is agreed on? Why or why not? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I'm studying for my health/life insurance test and I need some advice... Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:12 AM PST The study material states: "Increasing term is often used by insurance companies to fund certain riders that provide a refund of premiums or a gradual increase in total coverage, such as cost of living or return of premium riders." Can anyone explain what this means? I'm trying to take notes that I'll be able to understand. I'm mainly confused on the riders, does a rider pay the premium if the policy-owner can't? If they do, what do they get in return? And in the text it says that riders provide a refund of premiums, what does that mean? I will appreciate any answers I can get. I'm just trying to simplify it so I can take notes and understand them. Thanks! Edit: This is in Oklahoma if that matters at all [link] [comments] |
Do surcharges apply if the other party doesn't claim? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:58 PM PST So I hit a car as I was reversing, I didn't do any damage to mine or theirs and there was no paint damage either; the speedometer registered 0mph as I was just rolling. I left a note with all my information on the windshield. I filed with my insurance to notify them, not to get money. I also filed a report with the local police. Since nobodies filled a claim on their end, will I still be surcharged? I know nothing linear and they could potentially file later but, if they didn't ;would I get charged additional? Changing insurance after open enrollment? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 04:32 PM PST Hello! I recently went through open enrollment through work. I added my girlfriend as a domestic partner. Which was covered and I cleared it with HR and our provider. Although I didn't realize my HDHP was going to be 5000 family deductable and not 2 x 2500 for her and I. I lose insurance at the end of December from my parents. Is this a qualifying event to swap to our PPO plan effective Jan 1? [link] [comments] |
Why Would My Car Insurance Refuse to Cover Labor on a Repair Covered by Collision? Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:21 AM PST Hi There, It was recently determined that damage to my car was a not-at-fault collision. I have Collision Cover and Rental coverage through Geico, so I've been sitting pretty in a rental and am expecting to pay my deductible of $1,000 for what was estimated at around $3,000 of damages, but ended up being around $1,700. It seemed pretty cut and dried until the shop gives me a call saying Geico is refusing to pay for several hours of labor on my car with full coverage. The only labor is on the bill is for repairs to the area I filed the claim for. The car is pretty much brand new. The tech at Nissan seemed confused as well and said she had words with the adjuster because she's never seen anything like this in her time working the job for years. I am just at a loss as to how this makes any sense, but before I call the Adjuster, I'd really like some feedback. If what the Nissan tech said is correct, Geico thinks I need to shell out $1,500, meaning Geico is covering $200 of damages basically. This is laughable. I pay them that much monthly for my 2 cars to be covered. I will ask the Adjuster, but I get the impression he's saying they shouldn't need so much time to repair it. That's not my concern. I pay Geico to foot the bill for me... this is very frustrating. From Geico's website: "How much Coverage do I need? Your Collision coverage pays for repair or replacement of your vehicle, up to its actual cash value. If you have an older car, where the cash value is low, you may decide not to purchase Collision coverage. With Collision, you choose a deductible - the amount that you will pay out of your own pocket-before your insurance pays your claim. For example: you have a fender-bender caused by backing into a pole, and the damage is $500. If you have a $100 deductible, Collision coverage will cover $400 - the repair cost minus your $100 deductible. To keep your premiums low, select a deductible for the highest amount you would feel comfortable paying out of pocket." For reference on the above, my car is currently worth around $12-15k in good condition, so covering $1700 should be nothing, especially when I'm paying $1,000 of it back to them! What information can I collect in order to assist y'all in answering this question for me? As always, your help is MUCH appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:06 AM PST I keep getting emails from Healthcare.gov that I need to pick a health insurance plan, but I don't want to pay for two months of coverage in Louisiana if I'm going to be moving to Texas in January. Moving states will qualify me for a "life event" and thus makes me eligible to select a plan outside of the regular enrollment period. Can't I just wait until my move to select a plan? Primary vs secondary insurance Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:09 AM PST I am in my first full time job post-undergrad and this is my first time dealing with primary and secondary insurance. Im 23 yrs old and my dad I stills claims me on his insurance. I understand that my workplace insurance is my primary and my dads would be my secondary. (In terms of coverage, parents insurance > my insurance) Long story short, I need surgery and am scheduled for it in a few weeks. I have not met my deductable for my insurance this year, but my parents have. So my question is, is there any way to have the surgery covered by my dad's insurance instead of mine? Or would it be better to postpone until after the new year? The need for the surgery isnt life or death, but would like this to get this dealt with sooner than later. I don't fully understand what the interaction between the primary and secondary insurance is, so I apologize if this is seems naive. [link] [comments] |
Home (renting) burglarized over weekend Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:19 AM PST My family and I were away from home visiting my family this weekend. During that time our home was burglurized. I've already done the whole thing with the police and have started a claim with State Farm. As this has never happened to me before I'm curious as to what happens next. I have a pretty solid idea of what was all taken (Blu-ray player, HDTV, game consoles, some jewelry, Nintendo collectibles, welder, etc.) and I believe my plan includes 20k in coverage. What actually happens with this type of situation? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 05:43 AM PST Is it worth it to get CPCU? For those that got the certification, did you get paid more? A promotion? Any recognition? I have the first three courses down, but have failed and retaken 540 4 times. I'm considering picking it back up. I started the process a few years ago when I worked in P&C underwriting, but I'm now in Voluntary Benefits underwriting. (Accident, Disability, Term Life). I'd eventually like to get into product management. My goal is to make more money and that's really the only reason I'm considering picking it back up. [link] [comments] |
