    Fuck public accounting

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:26 AM PST

Accountants who started their own firm, or know of someone who has started their own firm, how did you do it?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 10:03 PM PST

I'll be entering public accounting in a year and I want to figure out what some of my future options look like.

Other than staying in public accounting as staff or partner, how did you start your own firm?

How much start up costs did you have to save up and any other suggestions on how I could possibly do this someday?!

    Thank you in advance.

Should I have a hardcopy of my textbook from tax class(intro to fed. income tax) to reference to for my internship?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 09:20 PM PST

Hi, I have a tax internship starting next week with a small public accounting firm. Would it be helpful to have my textbook to reference to? I will be mostly doing W-2's and 1099's. I rented out my book through an online access code, so I won't be able to use it once the semester is over. Would anyone recommend that I purchase a hardcopy of the textbook? I also rent out most of my textbooks for my other accounting courses. I want to take the CPA exam eventually, would it be helpful to have hard copies of most of my accounting textbooks to study for the exam as well as use to reference throughout my career?

    Valuing inventory for collectibles store?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 07:12 PM PST

So I've been helping a friend who runs the trading card store I frequent to set up a formal accounting system for internal and tax purposes. The one thing that has me baffled is how to properly value his inventory because of how trading cards tend to fluctuate so wildly in price, and tracking the cost basis for literally hundreds of different cards of varying values at any given time. It's not feasible for us to track the individual cost of cards bought for each type. The other option would be to average the value of each card together, but this would be wildly inaccurate since cards can range from $3 to $300 at times.

So mu question is, what would be the best practice for valuing inventory of this type? And is there some kind if irs requirement as well, just to make sure we're following tax law?

    Deloitte Offer?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 06:15 PM PST

Hey guys, I finished my interviews for my second round with deloitte on Monday. Overall I'm not too sure what to think, I didn't feel too good after them. In a quick recap, my technical went pretty well even though the interviewer didn't show any telling signs so I can make out what he though. I had my partner interview, and there were some red flags. He asked me about my resume and a few behavioral questions. He also spoke to me about deloitte and the culture, and went into detail about the role. But, the two big red flags were that he first finished asking me his questions about 15 minutes into the interview and said that "He had all the information he needed" and let me ask questions. Once I asked mine, he ended by telling me I answered very eloquently and that HR would he contacting me soon.

Not sure what to think, a shorter interview is never a good sign (I'm not sure if he was busy or he decided early) and the ending of HR would be contacting me soon didn't seem good either because there's no time line for me to follow. The last detail I have is the recruiter calling me before my interviews to confirm and she ended by saying that fingers crossed I'd have an offer by Wednesday(today).

I know I'm overthinking and looking too much into it but I'd love some feedback and your opinions on this info. And also would like to know what is the normal time frame when it's a company like Deloitte and for length after video interviews.

U.S. Tax question about cash contribution to C-Corp

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 05:32 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm an audit heathen here so naturally when a buddy's father asked me about this I was useless.

Basically he has a family member who lives in the UK who wants to wire him a large sum of money for a business (around $100-400K). Between them, it's a gift. The family member just wants to donate, if you will, this money without the expectation of ownership or return. He was asking me the best way to plan for this tax wise. He has a C-Corp in a state with a corporate income tax, but not a personal. I'm assuming he wants to use it for furthering the business.

Let me know what you tax maniacs think.

    Appropriate Starting Salary

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 04:34 PM PST

I'm graduating with a BBA in Accounting in a week. I've had 2 interviews with a small local CPA firm who offers audit services, tax services, and bookkeeping. They would like me to come in 1 more time to discuss salary and benefits. They would like to hire me primarily to assist with auditing. I have no previous accounting internships. All of my adult work experience has been working in fast food management, cooking, and as a sous chef. They will require me to work 56 hours/week January-April. 32-40 hours/week May-August and 40-50 hours/week September-December.

What would be an appropriate desired salary based on this information above?

Junior Accountant Interview in a few days. What are some things to expect during the process?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:34 PM PST

To expand, I've landed an in-person interview to meet with the financial controller after a phone interview which mostly consisted of background and experience questions. The job posting is that of a typical junior accountant position; bank reconciliations, journal entries, general ledgers, payroll, etc..

I haven't been to many interviews and this is my first actual major-related interview post graduation. What can I expect during the interview process? What type of questions are most commonly asked for this position?

    Thanks in advance!
