BURNOUT | DEPRESSION of ENTREPRENEURSHIP Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:33 AM PST Hey Guys, So here is the scoop..... I am 24 year old entrepreneur in the digital marketing space and have been doing it full time for roughly 2 years. This whole journey has been a roller coaster ride in every way possible... Long story short, I am writing cause i want to know if anyone on here has been through something similar with what i am about to share.... Basically the past 2 years I have been working non stop, every day with no days off. It is like I was in "tunnel vision" mode with my only focus being to prove everyone that doubted me wrong and to see how far I could take things. And I did just that... What I sacrificed was everything else, and most importantly my mental health. About 2 months ago I hit a wall and just broke down which messed me up for a couple weeks. Soon to realize I was burnt out... Looking back, over the past 6 months I had periods where I would feel down/depressed but it would only last a few days and I'd be able to bounce back and get back to the grind. I now know it was my body telling me to slow things down. I haven't been able to get out of the rut since and feel depressed, lack direction and don't have the "fire" like I use to.... Went to the doctor, and she prescribed anti-depressants to help regulate things but I don't think that is the answer. I want to know if anyone reading this has been through anything like this. Would love to hear about it.. [link] [comments] |
Is there a decent way to grow an IG account organically? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:31 PM PST I have been thinking about this a lot lately and it seems like unless you already have an established brand, or hookups in whatever niche you're promoting, it's kind of tough to organically grow out an Instagram account. I've looked at Instagram growth services like this one which can help get real followers until it takes off organically but I'm kind of at a loss about how to do more to get more followers. Sharing good and original content only gets you so far. Does anyone else have this problem? [link] [comments] |

Gary Vee - Insecure/Bad Message? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:14 AM PST Hey everyone, hope you're having a good day. I stumbled across a YouTuber/Motivational Speaker a few months who is an entrepreneur who owns a marketing company I believe. This guy has blown up I see his videos always recommended to me, I see friends on instagram loving his stuff. He preaches in a very aggressive way this lifestyle of "sleeping on the floor for 10 years" and working 18 hours a day. He says he spend all of his 20's working and never had any fun or any days off. I do like some of his messages and I think it has some benefit to young people, however the problem I see is that he seems very upset at any means of leisure and fun in life. I think this is a very bad and destructive mindset to have. By no means do I mean you should party everyday but hey once a week going out with friends and enjoying life is actually BENEFICIAL to someone. You shouldn't work 18 hours a day, you should work however much you can handle. Judging by the aggressive way that he talks in his videos it actually seems like he regrets not having some fun and he actually mentioned this in one of his videos (don't know the name, but I would like it). I actually saw someone made a youtube video pointed out something similar to me about Gary and working so hard each day actually results in misery in a person's life. And I think that a very large percentage of people who work extreme hours deal with depression/misery in their life and this is like a productive escape for them. Everyone has a purpose in what they do and I personally think Gary is an insecure person who tries to frame himself as a person preaching an incredible message when he mentions multiple he wants millions of people to show up at his funeral? Personally that rubs me the wrong way and sounds selfish. And all in all he preaches a pretty generic and obvious message that people for some reason love. The reason i'm writing this is that as an entrepreneur you need balance. Because at the end of the day we're all human and you don't know when your last day on earth is. Our goal is to be happy so please don't believe that punishing yourself everyday for years and years is something that is glamorous. Work outside of your comfort zone and slowly increase your productivity by being the best version of yourself in all areas of your life. Having a healthy body, mind, good friends, and good partner along with some financial freedom is the best possible thing you can achieve. Please feel free to share your opinions as I think this is an important reminder some people might need. Peace :) [link] [comments] |
Looking to start a local entrepreneurship group Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:36 AM PST Hey there guys, I was thinking a lot about this and I would love to start some local group where people interested in entrepreneurship would join and help each other and also learn a lot of stuff. Do you guys know anything like this? Something where I can take more inspiration from? How would you see a group like this? What activities do you think would be the best? Thanks in advance. Any younger entrepreneur have a hard time making friends? Does it get better over time? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:44 AM PST I'm 18 and working on my own trying to build a better life, freelancing to fund my main business idea. It feels hard to connect to other people who have similar aspirations. I started college very early at 15 and had some catching up to do socially but I'm about to leave university (graduate not drop out thankfully) and feel like everyone else has done better socially as they are leaving but me :D. I have made a really great friend in university which is the highlight of it all (a great highlight, he's amazing In case he is reading this <3). I'm just worried about what I'm going to do when I'm done. Does your experience as an entrepreneur make you more friends or less overtime? I feel like I need some kind of mentor because I'm lost. I'm willing to socialize with people I just don't know where to find them [link] [comments] |

Physical product idea looking for some feedback Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:53 AM PST A couple of days ago I was at a restaurant and I wanted to ask the server for some water but he was very busy to see me or pass by to signal him so I get this idea: A type of "traffic light" on the table. Let me explain sounds stupid but it would be a 36 inch tall (size used for example) that would clamp to the table this way it's not in your way and at the tip would have 2 lights which will be controlled with a couple of switches. Green light = everything is ok no need for assistance Yellow light = need assistance or something is wrong This would be controlled by 2 switches at the bottom of the pole. This way the server doesn't avoid you and come see you when something is wrong. Maybe I didn't do the best explanation but I hope you guys get the idea. [link] [comments] |
Facebook won’t let me people rate my business 5 stars only recommend? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:34 PM PST My Facebook page only lets people recommend the page and not give it 5 stars. What's the reason behind this? I can't find anywhere to enable ratings. Recommendations are good and all but it's a little emoting not having a star rating [link] [comments] |
Starting a small, one or two many run low-voltage company? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:37 AM PST Hi, I am 21 years old, I live in the NYC area. I have been working in IT for over a year now, and I have been looking for a way out. I currently work supporting Windows clients/servers, firewalls, routers/switches, software, etc. I have wanted to start an online business, but it's too competitive and I think this would be a better approach for someone like me. While low-voltage stuff isn't something my current company does, I do feel that knowing the basics(running wires, punching Patch panels, setting up SOHO environments[printers, UPS's, scanners, etc], and etc.) will help me. I know I am young, and I look even younger. My brother is an electrician, highly experienced and has taught me a lot. He is extremely knowledgable. I figure we have all the tools required, and starting off low is beneficial for many reasons. I am curious, what are the legal requirements. I have not found anything online that says we need a license like someone who wanted to contract electrical jobs for instance. If it's as simple as getting some IRS stuff in order, that's no issue. The Hiring Funnel: Metrics and Benchmarks Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:21 PM PST Hi all, I published a new video on how to measure your hiring. I believe hiring is the single most important thing we do as founders so I think it's critical to measure. I cover metrics to track, benchmarks to target, and ways to optimize each step, illustrated by M&M's. :) Transcript is below. I'm happy to answer questions. -- Lord Kelvin, the first to measure the temperature of absolute zero, said "if you can't measure it, you can't improve it". I believe hiring well is the single most important thing you can do as a founder, so I'm going to cover how to improve your hiring with metrics. And I'm enlisting these 500 M&M's to help. The set of metrics I'll cover in this video is for the hiring funnel, which usually has six steps:
Tracking the metrics for these steps may sound daunting but it's easy if you use an Applicant Tracking System, an ATS. According to OnGig, which surveyed over 3,000 employers, the four most popular ATSes for startups are Jobvite, Greenhouse, SmartRecruiters, and Lever. You have many options here. Let's run through some hiring funnel metrics and benchmarks to focus on. The first is the number of impressions on potential candidates. This can be outbound or inbound and includes every channel you use, like email, social media, job sites, your career page, ads, and recruiters. A 2018 Jobvite report found that a typical job post in IT needs about 500 impressions to make one hire, so if you're significantly below that, you probably need to market your openings more. I recommend channels specific for your hire. For example, Stack Overflow is good for reaching engineers while TheLions specializes in sales jobs. Paid ads, content marketing, PR, and SEO can also help you reach more candidates. The second metric is the number of candidates who apply. Lever tracked the recruiting funnels of 600 startups and found that on average, 86 applications were needed to make one hire. If you want more applicants, you can try a few things.
The third metric is the number of candidates you screen. Screening can mean a phone interview, a homework assignment, or any number of steps before a candidate is invited to interview on-site. Lever reports an average of 15 screens per hire, which means only about 20% of applicants are screened. If you're screening much more than this, you probably need stricter screening criteria. If you're screening much less, you may need to loosen your requirements or target channels that are more specific. The fourth metric is the number of candidates you interview on-site. On-sites are where you dig into the candidates' skills and gauge culture fit. Candidates are interviewed by about 4-6 people and should meet everyone on the team they'd work with. Lever reports an average of 5 on-site candidates per hire, only a third of those screened. Because on-sites take so much time from your team, you should be quite selective. If more than half of screened candidates are getting an on-site, you probably need to screen more tightly. Finally, there is the number of offers you make to secure a hire. Lever reports an average of 1.5 offers per hire, which means a third of the time, candidates turned down an offer. If more than two people you offer turn you down, something is probably off with your offer. Because candidates may turn you down, sign your choice before you let go the other candidates. Also file the rejected candidates for later because if they made it this far with you, they might be a fit in the future. This data shows that it's a long journey from hundreds of impressions to one hire. [link] [comments] |
Should LLC name relate to product in development Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:38 PM PST I am in the process of developing a product and will be working on some of my filing soon, does the name of my LLC need to include the product name or does it matter? Say the product name is " basketball shoe", is Basketball shoe LLC what I should shoot for or is JDudley LLC (example) ok? [link] [comments] |
Update (added free data): Directory of 400+ startup grants and government loans Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:13 PM PST After getting a lot of feedback on my website FinanceLinx.com, which helps startups and growing businesses with finding grants and government backed loans, I've decided to make some of the information public 🙂. If you go to the site now, there's an option to request a sample of the financing data. Please let me know how I can improve this, any constructive feedback is welcome! 🎉 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:13 PM PST I designed a shirt that was targeted towards people who watched "The Office." The ad got around 140 clicks and only 1 purchase after spending about $10 dollars in 2 days. People seemed to enjoy the ad as you can tell from the comment section of the ad however I only made one sale. What am I doing wrong here? here are the Stats [link] [comments] |
Are there any downsides to giving free stuff to influencers? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:12 PM PST So I started a new business sometime last month and now I'm starting to get a lot more exposure. But, of course, with this exposure comes influencers asking to collab. Most of them so far have just been asking for free stuff though. And I don't mind giving it to them since: 1) My products cost me relatively nothing, 2) I can use the images they take as ad creatives (with their permission, of course), and 3) Most of the influencers that have hit me up have over 100k followers with decent engagement (5k - 20k likes with hundreds to thousands of comments). But... what I'm curious about is the downsides to this. Most of the issues I've read online were just about not being able to get a good ROI, but like I said, I'll be getting an ad creative out of it which itself is worth it for that alone (since if I were to hire someone to take pictures for me, I'd have to pay them on top of sending them the product). Is there anything I need to look out for? [link] [comments] |
Is it harder to be an entrepreneur in Germany? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:26 AM PST I am 19 and got an online job at Facebook. I had $18/Hour and it was all good until I started researching. There are yearly limits (income and time) you can earn/work. If you even only plan on being an Entrepreneur, or build something, you have to report that you are self-employed (no matter how little you earn), you have to pay your own insurances (I am talking as if you were working for somebody, I am an apprentice), you have to do so many things which make it almost not worth it to even try something. It's insane, I have to quit my job at Facebook because I would be earning more than I earn from my apprenticeship and we can't have a kid earning money for himself I fucking guess. From 1400 I'd earn with Facebook I would have to give almost 700 on insurances and other stuff. I earned 2k and combined with my apprenticeship I earned almost 9k in 2018 and don't have to pay any taxes, but if I wanted to continue doing anything online or anything in general I'd have to do so many things and have so much stress just because system. I'm pissed if you didn't realize by now. edit: tax consultant approved all of this and took a look at my situation it's not just something I read online or so.. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Nov 2018 07:52 PM PST Heres a google search of what I mean I absolutely love being able to lay on my bed when I use my laptop, it relaxes me alot. However I love using triple monitors even more, I have seen these types of chairs in videos only and never heard of or seen anyone who personally uses and swears by it which is making me skeptical of how great I think it will be. Any of you guys ever had a friend invest, or tried it yourself? Please share your thoughts before I buy this dental chair and start engineering the hell out of it. <3 [link] [comments] |
How to get corporate gigs for my band? Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:07 AM PST I lead a 5 piece jazz band and we are looking to get some corporate party gigs. It may be too late for holiday parties but we want to give it a shot. Wondering if anyone has any crazy ideas about how to get in front of our targets… We are planning to just google search event planners online and send them emails, but thinking there may be a better way especially considering the holidays are almost here… Thanks in advance! Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:40 AM PST The TLDR is that I'm wondering whether it's possible to get professional guidance on choosing a theme that suits my goal. Yep, that's what a designer is for, right? Yeah, should be. But I've worked with a lot of designers in the past who've wanted to turn the thing into some overblown project, which I'm actually not looking for. I've got a few websites that are side projects that don't really generate income. But I'd like them to look nice and perform their function. (Mostly blogging and information sites with some ads showing.) Mostly for fun. I also have a couple of business contacts without websites that I'd like to help get started with basic 'brochure' sites. I've been through a lot of themes and have worked with designers in the past. But like I said, they usually want to design the thing from the ground up. I'm actually looking more for advice like do I need a hero unit design? A three-column layout? What colors? What fonts? I've used a lot of themes in the past, some from Envato, Genesis framework, WPMU, WordPress, etc. But nothing I've really stuck with, and the big problem when looking at themes is the sheer number of options and variations necessary. Oh, another problem of course is the bloat that accompanies a lot of themes and also keeping themes updated. (I may crosspost over at webdesign, too.) Thanks for any input on your process. Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:31 AM PST I developed a product (personal safety device) while at business school and have worked out all of the marketing efforts. I am having some trouble figuring out what my next steps should be. This is a fairly technical product: need to establish specific design elements including how to integrate GPS and alarm function. Will a manufacturer be able to help with this or do I need to hire/work with an engineer to first plan out all of these specifics? I have a rough idea on pricing but, again, should I find someone to help with that or will the manufacturer be able to help price (including gold/metal plating). I am looking for any advice from individuals who have launched a product and have an idea of a proper game plan. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
What are some Online business ideas for someone in my spot Posted: 07 Nov 2018 05:32 AM PST Hello, I have wanted to start an online business for a while now... I am 21 years old and I currently work in IT. While it's not the worst think ever, I have quickly learned that it's just not for me. I already hate the 8-5 schedule, and in reality it's 7:30AM to 6:00PM. I hate my work to be completely honest, I do not feel motivated at all. I constantly feel trapped. No need to bore you with that, I just want to dip my feet in the water already and start this thing. I know I will definitely be losing money and time, but that's totally fine. I just want to get out there and hopefully get more insight, perhaps one thing will lead to another. Ideally I would just do this part time and then move to full-time. I just have no idea what I can do that isn't already being done better. For example, I thought about creating software for the business world(automate some tasks), but there are probably so many more qualified companies working on that. I stand no chance. I am thinking of something local to where I live, that's one thing I have control over. My business would definitely be really small. I just don't know exactly what exactly to do. I have not ruled out anything just yet. I could do either a product/service based business or both. I do not mind making $20k a year(less than half of what I make now) or less, I just want that freedom/flexibility/etc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:23 AM PST Hi, I have a theoretical question. Let's say I incorporated in US, started a company and it made 6 figures, out of which most went for me as a salary. Can I used this salary to invest into a company to receive E-2 Visa? I'm asking because I have no better way of obtaining money sufficient to get E-2 Visa (still student...), and I have an idea how to get money from first users that would provide enough for a great salary.
