No DRIP drag, fractional shares, NAV pricing, no spread, and no trading risk. Honestly, I think the mutual fund is better than the ETF version now.

Why doesn't anyone here talk about how devasting Trump's multiple trade blunders are to the economy?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:56 AM PST

This trade changes with our partners and rivals in East Asia and our closest allies to the north and in Europe have been disrupting many industries and absolutely devasting others like farming and construction/HVAC.

The few times I've seen it discussed here it's brushed aside and Trump has nothing to do with economic downturn. Look at almost any stocks chart around January 2018. Solid growth and then a tank and it's been rough ever since. Maybe after this historic bull run we're due for a pullback but I believe Trump is speeding up and amplifying it and if we aren't careful we could be in deep shit.

EDIT: After consulting with fellow subs I would like to make sure that this thread does NOT BECOME POLITICALLY CHARGED. I just wanted to start a conversation of the objective changes that this administration has directly caused through these new trade "policies".

    George Sores Investment fund

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 04:47 PM PST

I am just baffled by the fund.

The Quantum fund, which has existed in many iterations in its more than 40-year history, has returned about 20 percent a year

If I get this straight, it is said that GS's fund has beaten the market by 10% annually for the last 4 decades. Now given that most of the people in the fund would be millionaires and have invested multi-millions into this, a 10 mill investment would be 14 billion dollars!

So how come we don't hear about all of them and why isn't this more well known. That was just off a simple 10 million dollar investment. What exactly was able to achieve these returns.

Not seeking advice, but opinions are welcome

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:09 PM PST

My grandfather sold his house this year and became a renter. He gave me the money from the house to put in the markets and I returned him about 8% in 6 months. I recently pulled all the money to cash with the stock market the way it is. My question now is, with tax time approaching, what is his best course of action to avoid paying a lot of tax. We live in California, he is 90, the amount is a little over $250,000. Any opinions are certainly appreciated...

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 04:04 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

ELI5: Buying the dip isn't working

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:44 AM PST

New investor here. Been watching CNBC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83Vpjiz-hQQ) for good or bad. They kept re-iterating that buying the dip is no longer working like it did in 2000. What do they mean with this? As someone who is looking to hold long term (10 years +), should I not average down on the dip? I was under the impression that timing the market isn't worth the effort nor is timing the perfect bottom. Am I wrong?

...how does one physically take a short position on something? I'm a new investor and just am trying to learn about how it works.

Is there a specific ticker? Is is done through your brokerage account like any other investment? Not planning to do it, I just want to know!

How often do you check your stocks?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:06 PM PST

New to the game and don't like the emotional ups and downs of checking it multiple times a day.

Was curious as to what you more seasoned investors did.

    Thanks!

crypto goes down and Coinbase collects a round of 300 million $

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 01:51 AM PST

The crypto goes down and Coinbase collects a round of 300 million dollars (BTW at an 8BN rating). Among the investors are large asset managers, leading VCs and crypto funds. The capitals will be invested to further develop the company's business:

International development and in particular linking the fiat world (regulated in all nations) with the crypto world

Widen the currency offer by preparing to welcome thousands of new crypts

Provide services connected to USDC the stablecoin supported by Coinbase connected to the dollar

Take large institutional investors into the crypto world.

In short, the bottom line is less speculation and more industry.

Associate at a Large Boutique - Bored at work, AMA

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:20 AM PST

Not sure if this'll get any traction but I'm pretty bored at work rn. I work at a large boutique investment bank in M&A mostly covering industrials but have done some consumer stuff too. Just lost a large pitch and aside from nursing my wounds on that one I'm not really staffed on anything else at the moment so the rest of my week is looking pretty chill.

Pretty keyed into capital market goings on, and obviously M&A stuff. Feel free to ask me anything related to the economy, the markets, the banking industry, careers, etc.

This the absolute market leader in GPUs, have a subscription based Geoforce Now product releasing soon, and they're tanking like crazy right now. If you plan to hold for the long-term, say 10 years plus, with AI becoming more prevalent, surely this is a good play?

How to find new bond issuances

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:27 AM PST

I understand the general workings of bonds, new issuances vs. secondary market and how they react to interest rates. But how do I identify new issuances of bonds?

When searching in fidelity or etrade, it seems everything is a bond etf, or an individual bond being traded in the secondary market. What if I'm interested in buying new, original issues of bonds? How do I identify and find these?

Follow up, who has some starting places to research and understand green bonds? Are these treated and taxed like corporate bonds or are some of them municipal since I imagine the infrastructure is built with a lot of government input into the project.

    Thank you in advance
