These stock options discussions run every Thursday.

Feel free to talk about options you have or ask questions on options. But before you ask any question make sure you see the following links:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell
    • If you're asking about basic terminology, see Tastytrade glossary, then feel free to ask a more in depth question afterwards, basic terms:
      • exercising an option - when you use your call option to buy 100 shares or put option to sell a 100 shares
      • strike price - The price at which stock is purchased or sold when an option is exercised
      • ITM - when a call option's strike price is below the stock price, or put's strike price is above the stock price
      • OTM - when a call option's strike price is above the stock price, or put's strike price is below the stock price
      • ATM - when the option's strike price is at or very near the stock price
      • long options (aka long call or long put) - buying options
      • short options (aka short call or short put) - selling (or writing) options
      • combo or option strategy - buying and/or selling multiple options
      • debit - what you're paying to buy an option or combo
      • credit or premium - what you're receiving (money) to sell an option or combo
      • covered call - when you buy stock and then sell calls
      • naked - when you sell calls or puts without owning stock or other options for the same stock
    • Wondering what those option strategies are: OptionsPlaybook, common combos:
      • Debit call spread (vertical debit spread) - generally a bullish combo that involves buying a call and selling a call at a lower strike; the cost of buying the spread combo is lower than just buying a call, however this reduces your max profit, but also reduces your max loss
      • Credit call spread (vertical credit spread) - generally a bearish combo that involves selling a call and buying a call at a lower strike; this reduces your max loss compared to just selling naked, but it also reduces your max profit, however you get the full credit upfront
      • Strangle - Two naked options, a call and a put, this creates a neutral combo and you profit as price stays between the two strike prices
      • Iron condor - same as the strangle except with protection, reduced profit but also reducing your max loss
    • A thorough explanation of nearly every option strategy explained by TastyTrade here
    • Book recommendations by the options community at r/options (subscribe while you're at it)

If you have a basic question, for example "what is Theta," then google "investopedia theta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    BA

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:57 PM PST

BA was down approx. 13% after news of their plane crashing came out. Report yesterday essentially placed blame on airline for failing to properly maintain the aircraft and ground it. Stock is up 7ish % in the past two days after this. In addition, Trump appears to be making steps towards a resolution in the China situation. Leads me to think Boeing might shoot back after taking a beating the past month. Their orders have also shown strong growth and there are huge barriers to entry in their market. Thoughts?

Netflix: lets talk about that. Will netflix reach 400? And how do people even determine that a company is overvalued?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:27 PM PST

    • Netflix is increasing its subscribers and revenue. This will continue to add to the bottom line.

    • When viewing what the company could be worth from future revenues, and considering the profit margin growth rate, the company is significantly overvalued.

    $PCG seems really undervalued

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:46 AM PST

Is anyone else buying PG&E right now? Even though they are being blamed at the moment, probably rightly so, for starting the CA "Campfire" it seems way oversold sitting at $27 when it was at almost $50 this year and $70 in the past two years.

I figure since they have a near monopoly on CA utilities, it is unlikely they will go bankrupt like some people are saying, the state gov just wouldn't allow it.

    Any thoughts?

Fundamental problem with investing in Chinese stocks

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:49 AM PST

I have held two attractive Chinese stocks for a while now (SECO & YY) and have been perplexed by how their stocks have been valued relative to fundamentals. After some thought, I think I have the answer to why they are not priced well, a conclusion which would have horrible implications for Chinese stock holders.

Please let me know if I'm on the right track

Chinese stocks earn income in rmb but USA holders want dividends to be in USD. Since China has heavy currency controls including making it nearly impossible for anyone or anything within China to convert from rmb to any other currency, Chinese companies listed in USA cannot return profits to shareholders.

If this logic is correct, then unless the company is acquired, returns on Chinese stocks listed in USD are theoretically 0 due to their inability to actually give wealth to shareholders.

I desperately hope I'm wrong. Looking forward to comments.

    Question about FISV

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:44 AM PST

Hey Guys, I've been trying to learn about stocks for about a year now, and I just had a quick question for those of you who are a little more tenured than I am.

A family friend of mine told me that he owned roughly 5000 shares of FISV in 1990. At first, I figured he made a good amount of money because it was trading at .40 cents a share in 1990.

But then I realized that FISV has forward split 8 times since then.(some we're 2 to 1 and some were 3/2) So my ballpark estimate for how much those stocks must be worth is in the ballpark of $17 million! Can someone explain to me if I'm calculating this correctly?

I'm not trying to get into his business or anything, I just feel like im missing something.

    FDA Has Approved Firdapse ($CPRX)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:18 PM PST

    https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm627093.htm

    Plain Text:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Firdapse (amifampridine) tablets for the treatment of Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) in adults. LEMS is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the connection between nerves and muscles and causes weakness and other symptoms in affected patients. This is the first FDA approval of a treatment for LEMS.

"There has been a long-standing need for a treatment for this rare disorder," said Billy Dunn, M.D., director of the Division of Neurology Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Patients with LEMS have significant weakness and fatigue that can often cause great difficulties with daily activites."

In people with LEMS, the body's own immune system attacks the neuromuscular junction (the connection between nerves and muscles) and disrupts the ability of nerve cells to send signals to muscle cells. LEMS may be associated with other autoimmune diseases, but more commonly occurs in patients with cancer such as small cell lung cancer, where its onset precedes or coincides with the diagnosis of cancer. The prevalence of LEMS is estimated to be three per million individuals worldwide.

The efficacy of Firdapse was studied in two clinical trials that together included 64 adult patients who received Firdapse or placebo. The studies measured the Quantitative Myasthenia Gravis score (a 13-item physician-rated categorical scale assessing muscle weakness) and the Subject Global Impression (a seven-point scale on which patients rated their overall impression of the effects of the study treatment on their physical well-being). For both measures, the patients receiving Firdapse experienced a greater benefit than those on placebo.

The most common side effects experienced by patients in the clinical trials were burning or prickling sensation (paresthesia), upper respiratory tract infection, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache, elevated liver enzymes, back pain, hypertension and muscle spasms. Seizures have been observed in patients without a history of seizures. Patients should inform their health care provider immediately if they have signs of hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, hives, itching, fever, swelling or trouble breathing.

The FDA granted this application Priority Review and Breakthrough Therapy designations. Firdapse also received Orphan Drug designation, which provides incentives to assist and encourage the development of drugs for rare diseases.

The FDA granted the approval of Firdapse to Catalyst Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation's food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

How the mighty game companies have fallen

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:52 AM PST

Almost every huge game publisher EA, Activision Blizzard and even Bethesda now have gone from almost realizing perfect games.

With perfect games i mean getting scores from critics and people playing them from above 80-90%+

But the culture in these companies has changed back in the day they were focused on making great games.

Now a days they are more focused on pleasing the investor by trying to squeeze every penny out of their players.

This has had an great effect on their earning and stock price but i feel like they are trading short term gains for long term ones.

As an effect we have seen smaller indie publishers and even bigger ones like CD project red arise filling the void that these companies have left.

    Help !

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:15 AM PST

My posts keep getting removed for referencing what I feel are important parts of my puzzle, so I will be as simple as possible! Just hoping for some sound investing advice, as my choices as of late have lost a lot of money...quite the opposite of what I wanted!

I decided against ETF's because I have a 401k for retirement savings, and was hoping to buy and hold some solid stocks...as well as try to swing others. I did this with zero prior experience, which explains my losses.

With that, I can message what I currently hold...but am looking for "what to do next"...

I have about $2300 in stocks from about 7 different companies (some small, some blue chip). The account was worth over $3k just a few weeks ago, but a couple of my choices that I thought were solid have really crushed me.

I have just under $200 available right now to buy with, and contribute $50 weekly to this account.

Any and all suggestions, comments, input, etc are greatly appreciated!!!

Added value of a specific alternative asset class help (asset management)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:54 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I am working on a project where I look at the added value of a specific asset class (such as PE-Buyout) to a fictional pension fund's portfolio (now 65% equity, 35% bonds). Some things I am looking at:

    -Efficient frontier analyse
