PSA: Now is the time to be disciplined

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:27 AM PST

There's a lot of poor quality posts lately that are focused on emotion and how people feel about stocks. I'm no perfect investor but this also isn't my first correction so let's try to be rational together. Do you have an investing strategy? Whether that strategy is deploying the same amount of cash per month into indexes/certain sectors, holding a lot of cash during this time and cost dollar averaging down, or moving your funds into more defensive sectors etc, you need a real strategy that you can stick to in this time so you don't let emotions get the best of you.

This goes both ways. If all you've seen is a bull market then you'd be tempted to pour all your cash in too early on the first sign of a dip instead of doing it in increments. If you believe that we are entering a bear market you may hang onto your cash so long that you miss the rebound since the odds of you timing the exact bottom is very low. You can attempt those two things if you'd like to but just realize the risk you are taking and plan accordingly.

If your plan is genuinely to save for retirement long-term then please stick to whatever solid investment strategy you have decided on. Remember that you do not need to deploy all your cash at one time and remember that you do not need to sell off all at one time. If you don't make huge emotional swings with your cash/investments then you can avoid the mistake that historically costs retail investors to lose most of their gains.

Why would a company do a stock split when their SP isn't very large?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:56 AM PST

Curious why a company would do a 7-1 stock split when their sp was already under a dollar. Any reasoning? Its seemed like the sp has been manipulated down recently - is there any way this would be a response to market manipulation?

    Mutual Funds Vs. ETF's

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:27 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I have some basic knowledge in stock trading as I've been investing in mutual funds for the past few years through a financial adviser. I haven't been seeing much return assuming mostly because I'm in a low-medium risk category, as I'm planning on buying a house within the next year or so. Also, after having a chat with a co worker, he tells me that it's very hard to have any gain with mutual funds through a financial adviser because the majority of what I'm gaining is going to him as commission. He found this out the hard way and went on to invest in ETF's which he highly recommends for me. I would like to fully understand how to invest in stocks before I take control myself. Where do I start?

I have an account setup on Quest Trade and am willing to invest 1000 dollars to see if I can handle this myself. Ideally, I would like to use this a tax free savings account for now, and once i get a better understanding hopefully try to make some smart investments for some bigger returns.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR; I'm a beginner in stock market trading. What's the best place to start in terms of learning and making a small investment of $1000.

    MKSI Bought ESIO. What Now?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:57 PM PST

I have owned shares in both of these stocks for about a year now. When ESIO was acquired the stock shot up by almost 80% so I sold. Now I am not sure what to think about MKSI. I probably stupidly bought MKSI at $90 so ive lost a bit at this point. I also know stocks tend to drop short term after acquiring another company at a premium. Anyone have any insight on how to handle this stock? I am contemplating cutting my losses and reinvesting the money since MKSI has been dropping steadily for a while now and the acquisition wont help anything. Let me know what you all think.

Any thoughts on how 5G will affect AT&T and other network companies?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:28 AM PST

5G is supposed to revolutionize cell phone speeds, and boost profits for cell phone providers. On one hand, 5G looks to be a huge upgrade over 4G, but on the other, it seems to me that once all the providers roll out 5G, everything with these companies, relative to each other, will essentially stay the same. I own a bit of AT&T, so I'm very interested, and with the recent dip, buying more is interesting me. Any thoughts on this topic?

    Enbridge suspends DRIP

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:21 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I recently setup a DRIP with my bank to acquire shares as opposed to cash from Enbridge. Enbridge recently announced that they are now suspending their DRIP and I was wondering why a company might choose to suspend their drip.

Also, is there a possibility that they will re-initiate it? Is it a temporary suspension?

What are your experiences with DRIPs and other companies suspending it. Has Enbridge ever suspended it before?

    Thanks

    LLC's and Margin Status

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 10:37 AM PST

I understand that applying for margin status as an individual is based upon credit worthiness, among other factors.

How does an LLC apply for margin status with their brokerage? Is it based upon the credit worthiness of the owner of the LLC, or, is there some other criteria? I was unable to find any solid answers online...

    Apple should stop providing guidance.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:45 AM PST

    Its a losing situation.

Apple could report incredible earnings like they did for Q4. But if guidance is judged 'weak' by Wall Street the stock falls.

Why even give guidance? Wall Street ignores it anyway and they make up their own targets.

Apple should just let the current earnings stand on its own and have Wall Street make wild guesses about the next quarter.

As a long term investor quarter to quarter numbers mean very little to me. Its about the long term. And removing guidance (like removing unit sales) is another step to keeping the focus of the company on the long term.

    TTNP thoughts?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:57 AM PST

So TTNP currently has jumped up 21% on Trump's signing of the anti-opioid bill. Looking at their past earning reports they have been losing money and don't think the one tomorrow will be any different and that will cause a price drop. I do believe it could be good for the next quarter and buying after all the hype dies down. Am I wrong here and should buy now?

    Your thoughts on AI trading/investing

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:42 AM PST

Hey guys we are looking for your sentiment and thoughts on a tool that could leverage the power of AI. I have a few questions, that would love to have your thoughts on:

    1. Would you like to be able to predict the price of a stock (tomorrow, 1 month, 6 months or 1 Year) from now? This might include the high and low for a given prediction.
    2. Would you pay for the ability, and if so, how much per month?

    or

    1. Would you rather have an AI that automates the build of a diversified portfolio for you, based on Modern Portfolio Theory or normal risk parity, on given asset classes (stocks, bonds, futures, commodities and the like)?
    2. Would you pay for that AI to manage the diversified portfolio, as in automate re-balancing and adjusting to market conditions, given that it shows a good track record?

Looking forward to your feedback! Looking to build something great for you guys.
