    Question re: House insurance payout

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:30 PM PDT

Currently in the process of accepting a cash payout on a garage that was totally burnt due to arson..

I was told by my insurance adjuster that as an owner I cannot benefit from a direct loss, so instead of paying out the full 100% it will cost to rebuild my garage, they can only issue 75% of the rebuild estimate.

My question is: Is the 75% set in stone or can I negotiate on a higher %?

Curious If I'm At Fault For A Car Accident.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 10:50 PM PDT

(San Antonio, Texas) Driving on the leftmost lane. No shoulder to my left, the shoulder was on the rightmost side of the road, four lane traffic(I think, it was that or five). There was a concrete wall on my left side, and a person in front of me that swerved out of the lane, and didn't leave me enough room to break, and not enough time to check my right side if I could dodge the stationary car.

On top of that, it was raining, and I was concerned that if I tried to dodge I would lose control of my vehicle. The car I collided with was directly in front of me(I attempted to apply the brakes). They were facing my way and stationary, not in any shoulder, their insurance is suggesting I'm at fault due to the fact that "she had been there for a few minutes, and therefor it was entirely possible to not hit her". I only have liability, so my company won't go to bat for me. Long story short, I'm just curious if I'm actually at fault for this, and if I'm not what to do.

Employer dropped health coverage with three days notice

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:16 AM PDT

    Hello,

I work for a small business ( 10 employees) and was notified that are insurance coverage plan was ending in three days. I live in CO and looked into the health care market but don't qualify for any tax credits. I am a family of four two adults and two children and found that my insurance is going to go up from 700 a month to 1600. Does anyone have any suggestions on decent quality plans that don't cost as much as my mortgage? I was wondering if there is emergency type coverage for like E.R visits Flight for Life and then using a local doctors group that we pay a monthly fee.

Lapse in auto insurance due to sale.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:05 AM PDT

Im asking from Ontario, Canada. Sold my only car last December, about 10 months ago. Cancelled my auto insurance as well. Before doing so I had inqured with my insurance company about what my rates would look like when I eventually purchased another car. They told me I would lose continuous coverage discounts, somewhere around 10%, and i would be considered a new driver after not having auto insurance for 12 months. Move into downtown Toronto, the lack of parking, close proximity to work and Uber has delayed vehicle ownership.

What increase in insurance can I expect after 12 months? 24? Ive heard some people using car share programs to keep insurance going? Can i insure a car that i do not own? Eg. SO's car?

    Sorry for formatting, on mobile.

Hit a deer lying across a dark highway (Oregon)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:53 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

About a week ago I ran over a deer that was lying across most of my lane on a dark, rural four-lane highway. The conditions made it difficult to see the deer until I was close to it. Given all the surrounding conditions, I felt the safest available choice was to try to drive directly over it. It caused over $2k in damage to the front bumper and underside of the car.

State Farm filed the claim under my collision insurance. Most of the info I've read online, particularly in this forum, says that State Farm and most other insurers don't differentiate between live and dead animals--all animal damage claims are comprehensive, the posts say. I didn't realize why that might be until my boyfriend pointed out that I had no idea whether the deer was still alive or not when I hit it. I just know it was in the lane, not darting out into the highway.

After I read posts here, I called SF's claims department and they were unable to clarify the language of the policy or email it to me (I no longer have a copy), so I have to wait until tomorrow to ask my agent.

My collision deductible is only $250, which is fair enough I guess, but I don't want this to count significantly against my long record of cautious, hypervigilant driving, or raise my rates.

Can anybody here help clarify or give any advice to help me advocate for myself with the agent or claims people? I would really appreciate it. Fair's fair, I just don't want to be taken advantage of. Thanks for any help!

Boyfriend's car hit, person that hit car wasn't carrying current insurance card

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:56 PM PDT

Long story short: Someone backed into my boyfriend's car causing the car some pretty significant damage. My boyfriend got all of the information from the other driver (license, plates, registration, NAIC, etc) except the full policy # or name of their insurance carrier (he was shaken and didn't realize he didn't take a full picture of their info until after the fact). He doesn't have collision coverage so his insurance can only help him so much and wont go after the person for him. The claim assistant said she isn't able to find the company that is insuring the offender because the offender wasn't carrying a current insurance card. So having the full policy number didn't matter in the first place, apparently. He has tried contacting the offender, but they have't returned his calls (no surprise there).

This is in CA. Is there any way my boyfriend can find what insurance carrier this person has? We asked the claim assistant about talking to the police, but she politely made it seem like the police wouldn't be very interested in helping with something small like this.

Does keeping separate carriers for policies make sense?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:33 AM PDT

Hi all, quick q. Do policies cross-collateralize? Meaning if I have a car claim, does it affect my homeowners policy if they are with the same carrier?

Asking because I recently got married and I'm State Farm, shes Allstate. Yrah, sounds like a bad version of R+J, haha.

Anyhow, we had a hail claim on the house last year and a car claim both with Allstate. The agent made a comment about both claims possibly affecting the policy.

Is there any benefit to keeping autos separate from home? I am aware that we get significant discounts by combining policies, Im just curious if a car claim can affect a home policy or vice versa.

    Thanks!

Car Crash State Farm deducting $1100 for rocker rust (?)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:40 PM PDT

Other party didn't see me at a stop sign and I hit them. They're at 100% liability and state farm offered me $4500 for my truck. They compared my truck to 4 others and the average value of mine compared to the 4 is $5700. However, they listed the Typical body condition as "Moderately damaged" for a 2002 GMC Sierra, but listed mine as "Seriously Damaged" and deducted -$1100 off the $5700 average since it had rust. I called them, they said anything more than a spot of rust and it's listed as Seriously Damaged. I asked them to provide pictures of the 4 2002 trucks they are comparing it to, since I find it hard to believe a typical 16 year old truck would have less than a spot of rust. She took the last two off the list offering a "price bump", but when I said I still wanted to research she said keep in mind you can only call the first and second dealer, not the third and fourth because it's no longer on the list. I said no, if the first two are outliers and the "TYPICAL" 2002 truck does have this rust then I want my $1100 back. She said we're not comparing to the "typical truck", and I said yes that's exactly what the evaluation is doing. What do you guys think? I believe she doesn't want me comparing to the 3rd and 4th because they were lower priced and thus more likely to have rust - but both had a much higher value than the $4500 they offered me. Can you guys help me out? This is bullshit, and I know it's not the individual auditors fault but the company's. She didn't need to be rude however just because she couldn't close on me quick enough.

Images of the $1100 deduction "Seriously Damaged" body condition. Apparently the damage is 1/5th the value of the truck.

Post Hurricane Michael Insurance Run Around

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 03:13 PM PDT

    Apologies ahead, on mobile.

Friend's house was damaged by hurricane michael in Mexico Beach, Florida and the insurance companies are giving her the run-around.

Looking for advice, a basic 101 run down on how to deal with a post major disaster s#%t show of insurance companies saying "well, you know that could have been due to a sea monster and your policy just doesn't cover that..." I think you get the picture.

Should she seek an independent adjuster? Any advice on how to do that and find someone reliable and experienced? (Please no soliciting)

    Thx in advance Reddit.

    Accident Insurance Advice Wanted

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:54 PM PDT

Hello today I got an offer from AAA (US) for accident insurance which pays:

    1. hospital stay: $200/day
    2. Recuperation: $200/day
    3. Outpatient (ER): $200
    4. Small life insurance payout in case of death. ($20,000).

I already have health and life insurance, but this caught my eye because the premium is only $130 per YEAR for BOTH my spouse and I.

It seems like a good deal. It covers any accident I may have in a vehicle, aircraft, bus, train or taxi. Also I'm covered as a pedestrian.

I searched on-line and the cheapest I could find was approx. $25.00 per month each person for less coverage.

So is this worth it? What are the odds that I will even use it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Metromile and GAP coverage?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:15 PM PDT

I recently bought a new truck, financed through my credit union. While shopping around for car insurance rates I decided to give Metromile a try because I currently only drive about 7,000 miles a year.

While investigating, I discovered that Metromile doesn't offer GAP insurance directly. Instead they pass you off to a "third party vendor" that would write a separate GAP policy for my vehicle. When I asked if my fiberglass camper shell (essentially a pricey accessory) was covered they said no and again referred me to the third party vendor.

This was starting to sound like a hassle (didn't even bother getting a quote on the additional cost) so I backed out of the deal and went with my original insurer (AmFam).

Did I make the right call? Is it important to get GAP coverage from your primary insurer? Any experiences with Metromile's GAP vendor?

    Lost wages - No Injury

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:49 AM PDT

So I was rear ended on my way to work, and the other driver was cited at fault. I went through my insurance after trying to go through his and they kept low balling the offer for my totaled car and delaying responses. I missed work on the day of the accident due to not having a car (I drove it home and took it to the body shop where they said it shouldn't be driven). When I tried to collect lost wages for the day of the accident I was told that because there was no injuries I couldn't collect. But I still missed work at both of my jobs because of this accident, which wasn't my fault. Is this actual policy/law and if not what can I do? This happened in CT.

    Uninsured Motorist Property Damage

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Virginia resident here (Virginia, USA, if there's another one out there). Insured through GEICO since 2006 or so.

Currently I carry "$50,000 per occurrence" coverage for Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (capitalized because I assume the precise wording matters A Lot, Not Because I Am Eccentric). I also carry comprehensive and collision, as well as bodily injury liability ($500k/person, $1m/occurrence) and property damage liability ($500k/occurrence).

My car is worth probably $8000 at most. I have a hard time seeing why I would need more than $50k of uninsured property coverage, but why I've come here to you today, kind Internet strangers, is to see if there are circumstances in which this isn't enough. Thanks for helping me understand my coverage.

How do I shop for insurance?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:39 AM PDT

I am moving to a different state, and working from home in MA. I've never had to personally shop for insurance before, so I'm not quite sure how to do it.

I am currently on a Florida Blue plan that's pretty good. I'd like to have a similar one in MA, but not quite sure how to get it. I went on the BCBSMA website and plugged in my info, and what they're offering is a bunch of HMO plans that are nowhere near what I have right now.

How do I get more options from the BCBSMA website? If I can't do I just go to insurance brokers and show them what I currently have and ask them to find a similar one?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge, and any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Which company or website has helped you find the best term life insurance policy?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:13 PM PDT

Should i go with an agent? My auto insurance was cheaper with an agent than via comparison websites or regular company sites. Wondering if it would be the same with life insurance.

    Car Insurance Question

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:43 AM PDT

Does your name need to be on the title in order to insure a vehicle? I imagine it does, so co-signing may have to be route I go. Just trying to get rebates I qualify for while having my mom's name on the vehicle for insurance/registration reasons.
