While I know that over the long run investing my money in the stock market is probably the smarter move realistically though if i owned my house outright I wouldn't borrow at 4% to have a chance at 7%. It is nice to see that I already saved 16k from going into the banks pockets! I am also now paying more principal than interest every month on my normal payment.

Extra Principal Paid: $15,035.00 Interest Saved:$16,328.67 Payments Saved:30 Current Loan Maturity:8/1/2034

I don't feel like I am smart enough to be successful (I have a mental disability). What can I do for money?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:29 PM PST

I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science along with about 2 years work experience, but I have developed schizophrenia as I have gotten older. I am 26 years old male now, and the symptoms are starting to set in more severely.

Due to my mental disability, I find it almost impossible to stay organized on a day to day basis. My memory has become so bad that I cannot remember a single thing for more than a few seconds. If you give me a number, I will not be able to keep it in my head for more than 3 seconds. Furthermore, I (literally) cannot think of words quickly enough to speak out loud. This is hard to describe but imagine someone asking you a simple question, and yet it still takes you 30 seconds to think of the answer. This means I wind up not being able to talk to anybody, which obviously is an awful thing. I have to go in the car and scream and shout incomprehensible phrases, because this is all I can think of, to get the feeling of having talked that day (try not talking for days or weeks at a time and you will see you want to shout to make up for it). I am also uncoordinated and run into things, and make mistakes frequently with my hands, and just tons of mistakes in general. A job, any job, is always a complete nightmare day in and day out, where I have to try extremely hard just to appear incompetent at best. As you can see I luckily can still type and write decent enough, given very substantial time. Edit: This post now has taken me 3.5 hours to write.

My family has abandoned me and hates me (because I am a moron, a career failure and a clear loser, they aren't exactly too closed about it), and people at work at multiple different jobs have called me "Dumb", "dolt", "dumbass", and "moron" and generally seem to hate and also distrust me as well. I have no friends and struggle at socializing with anyone. In fact, people in general seem to strongly dislike me naturally, because they can tell I am crazy just by looking at me or interacting with me for just a few brief seconds. People will point and stare at me and say I'm a moron, and I do not even know why, I cannot help it and do not know what I am doing wrong. Apparently I just look that crazy, it makes me very sad to be judged by how I look but I cannot deny it happening. I am short and weak looking for an adult male so maybe I look the part, like I am not fully developed. I know it is not my schizophrenia playing tricks on me because I do not have audible hallucinations, and more than enough people have made it plain and clear. Going to parties for example, it's just made plain and clear, that I am crazy. They say it right to my face. This sounds weird as fuck because this isn't... a thing that normally happens, right? But it does, have you ever seen someone on the side of the road and said to yourself, that guys looks fucking mad? That guy must be me, because people instantly hate and distrust me even just based on visual appearance alone (and it doesn't have to do with dress or hygiene, I can be wearing full business attire and I'll still get called out, it makes no fucking sense but I must look like the weirdest and craziest freak in the world).

I have even had 2 guys walk past me one time in public and say "That guy looked like a fucking lunatic, I judge people for how they look all the time, he'd better shape up because that's just the way people are, they judge others". I wish I was making this up, but I appreciate his brutal honesty. I knew from that moment instantly that this was not my schizophrenia playing tricks on me, as I turned around to glare at him, and even his friend was surprised and stunned silent by the fact that he said it, as they glared back at me. But he did, and he meant it. What could I do but shake my head and move on with my day. This wasn't the first time I'd been called a lunatic, and certainly not the last.

"Lunatic", "Crazy", "that guy has something wrong with him", "stay away from him", are just a small handful of the remarks I have heard. My last girlfriend even started to call me a lunatic and broke up with me, as the schizophrenia symptoms worsened. I would literally just be sitting there studying, and she would look at me with disgust and call me a lunatic.

In this hyper competitive field of software development, I know I will not be able to find another job after I lose my current job. I only have this job because I undercut the average pay for a developer by a LOT, as well as being overqualified (this position is mostly just development support and only requires an associates degree). Even so, they are saying they will get rid of me after 6 months because I am a dolt and not cut out for programming. (To give you perspective, I was even fired from a pizza shop for making too many mistakes and being too slow while searching for this coding gig). So, how can someone pay me to be a computer genius if I have a mental disability. Software engineering requires a near perfect brain and a high IQ, where I was only able to earn a 3.0 GPA during my degree and that was when I was more sane. I had a lot less symptoms, as well as studying 2–3 times as much as my peers and generally struggling through the entire time, super try harding to make up for the lack of natural talent. Towards the end of my degree even some of my professors started to hate me because they could tell I was simply not talented enough to be a developer. I received a C- in both of my final project courses, because I could contribute almost nothing by that point. But, the computer science counseling department and a few kind professors seemed to pass me out of pity, as I had already been there for 6 years and always showed up for tutoring, study groups, etc.

What can I do to at least have a life, even if it's not the good life I intended and planned for? I mean this very practically, I simply need to make around $1000 a month to live on my own. I do not want to be homeless. I realize I will probably never accomplish much in life. I can feel the symptoms of schizophrenia becoming worse each day, more rapidly even each day. But I just want to have a roof over my head and enough to survive.

My girlfriend's financial aid for college changed suddenly, now she has to come up with 6000$ in less than a month. What can she do?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:13 PM PST

So basically, when my girlfriend filed her FAFSA for her first year at college, her expected family contribution was 0$. This was based off her mom's tax information, but not the final tax return. When she had to submit the final tax return that she thought she already had, her financial aid changed. This was due to it including income from her stepfather than no longer lives with them and makes considerably more money than her mother. The office of financial aid told her that the only way to have her aid reflect her current situation was for her mother and stepfather to have an official divorce, which isn't an option as they are trying to make their marriage work again. Now, she has to pay 6000$ before December 1st or all of her aid will be revoked. Any advice as to steps she could take would be appreciated.

I (28) was just shown paperwork for a Merryl account set up for me nearly 20 years ago. It's at $36k

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:54 PM PST

This came out of the blue while having lunch with my Grandparents.

They explained how originally it was for college, but I never had any drive or ambition to further my education. So they let it ride out and today I saw a glimpse of last months report. Or quarterly.

In any case, this money has been turned over to me. I am pretty frugal, and just live life. I have my GED and have worked basically M-F for 12 years.

I'm going to be in a transition period for the winter as work slows down, so I'm thinking about getting a certificate to give me a makeshift career. Welding, or a CDL or the like.

Please help me invest in my future. I know nothing about banking. I don't have a bank. I get my paycheck deposited on to a payroll card and just have never cared about finances. So. If you do not guide me it will be off into youtube research.

I work all the time and my back, and knees are hurting more and more every year. I don't drink, or have any money sucking things. Besides rent, relationship, 2 cats. No car even. So. Mold me. Please help me. I want to take this one chance and not lose it. https://ibb.co/h9P9oV

Puzzled by the way credit card payments are done in the US

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:34 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm visiting from Europe and it's quite puzzling to see the way payments are done. You swipe the card and then a piece of paper is returned to you where you write down the tip you'd like to add, so final payment is done once you leave.

I find this very error prone and quite unsettling, so my question is: what happens if you were to find that instead of 10$, 100$ were charged? Doesn't this happen all the time?

My friend had no idea that she had debt (a true story).

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:21 PM PST

Thanks to r/personalfinance, I completely changed my financial well being. I got myself completely out of debt, took care of all my debt that was in collections, set up a budget and no longer have to live paycheck to paycheck, and stopped spending money on stupid, useless shit! All thanks to this sub!!

So, when my friend told me that "the more money she makes, the more broke she is", I felt compelled to help her better understand finances from what I've learned, in the best way I could, as I was in her shoes not too long ago.

I first told her to calculate her recurring monthly expenses, such as phone bill, auto insurance, car payment, etc. Then, I told her to calculate her monthly income (since she's hourly and it fluctuates, I told her to average her paychecks for the past ~4 months), subtracting her expenses from her monthly income and using the rest to get out of debt.

Knowing that she has credit card(s), I explained to her the avalanche method. I told her she should pay off the card with the highest interest first, while paying minimums on all the others, and as each card gets paid off, add the payments of the prior card to the next card.

Her response to me was "So I'm really not in debt at all... I have one credit card that I pay every month on...."

    insert red flag

I didn't want to be judgmental or accusatory (because, I was in her shoes as far as poor financial habits not too long ago) so I said "So your credit card has a $0 balance after you pay $100 on it every month?"

To which she says: "Well, no. I didn't realize that was debt".

And then it hit me that, many people, myself included at one point, lack/have lacked the resources to learn about proper financial habits. Which makes me really, really sad considering this country (U.S.) is really big (at least in my opinion, and no, I'm not talking politics nor do I desire to) in consumerism.

Financial health should really be taught in school, and furthermore, should be required (IMO).

Anyway, I just wanted to share this story and thank r/personalfinance for helping me get out of debt and be financially responsible! I'm trying to spread the good word as best I can!

    Edit: terminology

A man at my work intentionally tipped me with a rare coin worth several thousand dollars. In the event that I sell it, what should I expect down the line? Do I need to put some away for taxes?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:23 AM PST

I've never had a 'windfall' before. I'm taking the coin to be appraised and graded this week, but based on previous auction sales and the condition it should go from anywhere between $3,000 to $8,000. What should I do if it sells? I don't want to use all of the money to pay off my car if I'm going to owe a sizeable portion of it to Uncle Sam come April. Thoughts?

Edit 1: It wasn't a tip. That was a poor choice of wording since I forgot they are taxed differently. I would consider this a gift.

Father just had a stroke, most likely won't be able to work anymore, need advice please.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:23 PM PST

Hello, I'll just get right into it... My father is 64 and last night he had a stroke that completely paralyzed his left arm (and maybe others parts of his body I'm not aware of yet). He was working 2 jobs just to pay our rent with my brother and I contributing to that rent and food etc, his main job was a hair dresser and he obviously can't do that anymore, if anything at all. He's 64 so he can take his social security a couple years early and also take disability as well but I don't know if that will be enough... We live in CA, I don't know the exact number of our rent but it's somewhere between $2600-2800 a month, I'm sure with his social security and his disability it might only barely scrape $2000 a month if were lucky, so with my mom contributing and my brother and I I'm sure we can make it work but I just fear it will put my life and my brothers life on hold in order to just survive month to month. My parents have no savings, no 401k, no Roth... in fact I believe my father is actually in debt. So I know this situation is difficult and there's not much you guys can tell me to do since there isn't but I just thought I would post on here and just see what others have to say, thanks for your time reading this.

I have high medical costs and I'm considering taking my new company's high-deductible plan. Am I crazy or will it actually save me money?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:39 PM PST

I just started a new job and have some choices to make regarding health insurance. I have considered this, read the wiki, and used the pf spreadsheet, but I wanted some final feedback.

Due to various issues, the last 2 years have been very high cost years for me (and my insurance). In 2017, my insurance paid $31805.27 for my medical stuff (after discounts!) and in 2018, they paid $46353.44 (so far). My max OOP for both years was $3,100, which I reached both years.

While I don't expect my costs to be THAT high in 2019 (hopefully), I do tend to have fairly high cost stuff going on and expect to reach my OOP max.

Now, as a result, I usually take a PPO with a lower deductible, lower OOP max, and copays. I was planning to do so at my new job; however, I am considering taking this job's "high-deductible plan." I think it will likely save me money. Let me explain:

    PLAN 1 (lower deductible) PLAN 2 (high-deductible)
    DEDUCTIBLE $500 $1500
DEDUCTIBLE NOTES $1500 separate deductible for RX RX is considered part of $1500 deductible
    OOP MAX $2650 $3000
COPAYS - OFFICE VISITS $25 PCP/$35 specialist 20% after deductible
    ER $100 + 20% coinsurance 20% after deductible
EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTION None up to $750 matched to HSA
    PREMIUM COST $44/month $16/month

For what it's worth, 2019 should have 8-10 "PCP" level appointments per/month (I believe cost before insurance is 150-300 dollars per visit) and 6-12 specialist visits over the year. One high cost Rx/month (cost before insurance/deductible will be $400/month, though I may be switching medications to a generic). Thus, even if I don't have the surgeries and hospital admits of the last 2 years, I should still easily reach my OOP max for the year, and therefore, benefit from the so-called high-deductible plan as long as I contribute at least $750 to my HSA, correct?

Is my logic sound? I'm nervous and this is fairly new to me! Thanks!

Employer is essentially “forcing” retirement on my dad otherwise they will take money away.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:37 AM PST

So my fathers employer supposedly told him that if he continues to work for the company that they will take away thousands of dollars from him unless he retires. I believe he has both a pension and a 401k. I'm not sure which one they are referring too (or even if they are referring to those accounts) as I haven't been able to talk to him yet about it but was told this by my mother.

Is it possible for an employer to do this? Also, he has worked for this company for decades so I don't think it is related to vesting or anything either.

Running low on cash...I was just fired from a job I moved for in a city I just came to. Long post and any advice will help.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:08 PM PST

So to start, I was living in colorado and working as an ACMT in training. I received my certification and officially become one of the ACMTs at my job in Colorado. I worked at that job until the 7th month when they switched me and my coworkers from ACMTs to sales workers in the same day. I was a sales member for a long time and had to learn/ be trained to sell stuff. I was clearly upset and called up the service VP asking if there was something I could do to become an ACMT again. He offered me a job at the HQ of the company in Washington. I asked if there was any help I could receive and he said the company won't give anything but he was willing to personally give me 600$ to get there. So I booked some airb&bs, called around to see if there were any places for rent (we didn't find anything until we got there) and made a the best gameplay plan we could me and my girlfriend that is who just quit her job to move with me. So a month or so later we packed everything we could in our car and sold the rest. We left in late July and we arrived in Bellingham, Wa, a few days later in August. I started working right away as an ACMT and let my boss know I didn't feel completely confident due to just coming back from being sales for a long time. He said not to worry and I started work around the 15th of August.

Since then I worked for them till I was fired on October 16th. Before I was fired as far as I knew everything was going well till 2 weeks before I got fired. So keep in mind a new company was looking to purchase the company I was working at and had a bunch of people "view" all of our jobs while this was going AND a tech that just moved to this city wanted my job as my boss wouldn't stop talking about how fantastic he was. So October comes around and I received a write up for entering in the information I have been entering in since I got this job. According to them they way I entered in this info was incorrect and there things I needed to make sure of first. However, in Colorado that was never the case. I was told how to do it but never was trained on it. That being said I still got the write up for it the day I messed up...then I received another write up for something I couldn't control but didn't let management know about. (A computer glitch) yes, two in one day. A week later and a day before I was fired I was written up for a customer that gave me a wrong name. Apparently I should have asked his name more then twice? Idk. The vp of the company took me outside mid shift and said there was nothing he could do because the other vp and ceo wanted him to fire me. So I packed up my stuff and came home. That was on Oct 16.

So that shit fell through due to change and immense stress. I have never lost a job/ been let go before and I have been working since I was 16. I was fired randomly after trying to (and slipping up) relearn how to do my job, this was due to the work being done in a completely different way then the state I came from, no relearning/ training or break and when I got here ( to Washington ) the company did it very different to what I had done before. So where are we today? My girlfriend is working her ass off and doesn't deserve this. My Family just bought a house but were freaking out the whole time saying they couldn't find a place here in WA and that I should take care of my grandma instead of them ( They moved here a month after I did by there own wish to be closer to me and see a different state.) My girlfriend was drinking, smoking (she had quit for 2 years) and ever since we got here had thoughts to hurt herself. My best friends are getting married and invited me to be the best man. I pulled something in my back at the job in CO after trying to lift something and may need surgery as I cant get out of bed sometimes due to the pain. I have put off getting meds for my major depression, OCD, anxiety, disassociate issues and muscle pains. All while I was working till I got fired...I..I just feel so clearly fucked and this dreadful pit I have forming in my gut is awful.

The fact I have really bad mental health issues on top of all of this shit so getting out of bed is getting harder. I am constantly searching on why I matter after this disgrace/ burden I have caused. We are here with payments, car, rent, food, medical fees bills and insurance. All needing attention before the end of December. I have less then $1,000 and so does she. However she now makes about 700$ every paycheck. We don't really have people to turn to as we just moved here and only just met a coworker or two. Just my luck after saying how we should trust this job and how everything was going well from the other state and shouldn't worry...I've tried to sell most of what I could to get more cash. I have told her to leave me and move back to where she is from, as I fear it's the only way she will make it out here since I cannot find a full time position to cover all the expenses.

Currently, I wake up at 8-9am walk/bus around Bellingham and hand my resumes out after filling apps while also using indeed to apply online. I get done around and head home at 3pm-ish take a break and go at at again till stopping around 5pm-ish. I refuse to take a break like people keep saying as I don't want us to worry about cash. I have gotten many interviews, yet, only 1 call back which wouldn't have worked due to only 4 hour shifts. I have called back as well and all of the jobs I have called back are taken. I have worked in retail for 8 years have fantastic organizational skills (OCD), I am a very hard worker and always intend to finish what I start. People have always seemed to enjoy working with me. I love 3D modeling and photography and have years of customer service. I want something full time and stable so I can sleep again. I should be able to find something right? Possibly even a remote job?

We don't know anyone that well here, I mean we know literally 2 people a couple we met at a game night. So I can't really ask someone what to do or where to go. She is able to pay a tiny bit of her rent and bills but normally I cover the rest. Her job doesn't offer more then about 6 maybe 7 hours if she's lucky. She is trying her best and I feel awful being unemployed. I am doing my best to find anything that pays $13 or up and is a stable full time job. I've applied for unemployment but they said it will take a while to start..

I didn't get any severance pay from my old job after being fired. I make zero income right now. I just got on food stamps and have applied for apple care health. (Medicaid) I just (yesterday) switched my state ID yet. I have applied for apple health and food stamps. I do not drive and will be taking the written test to learn how soon. Like..what should I do. I've always thrived in being told what to do my whole life. If someone gave me directions I would do my best to follow it to the tee however without orders or instructions I feel out of place and so fucking lost.

She pays for gas, travel, internet and dinner. I pay the electricity, groceries, phone, rent, health, therapy and medical expenses. We have incredibly low rent and only really pay for electricity for this place bills wise. She buys her own food and I have stopped buy food for me besides bread, milk, rice and cheese.

The sad part is I know this story isn't unique. This isn't a feel bad for me story, I could care less how you feel about it. I want help. I am no different like some of you here dealing with issues as well. People deal with problems like this and if not worse, all the time. I am just trying to give it a good ending is all. Something positive out of this downward spiral. I know it's possible and want to show others there is always a way.

Our goal is to make it here in Bellingham. Someone is probably asking why post here? I don't know where else to go. We have never loved a city more. We truly believe in this place. We are so fond of it's love, art and kickass people. So I ask you fine people of Reddit to help with any advice you can. Any direction or resources you can share? Can you offer any helpful advice? Maybe even any jobs or remote from home jobs? What should I follow and focus on? What should I do first or the most right now? Any advice is worth hearing at this point.

TLDR: Moved to new state, was fired randomly, feel lost, need cash to live and pay rent/bills. Seeking any helpful advice.

Transfer mortgage to roommate upon death.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:44 AM PST

Hey everyone, wondering if this is possible. Not that I intend to die anytime soon, but, I've had the same roommate for the last 19 years. 10 years ago I bought a house on my own with my roommate basically become a renter. He is of course my best friend and I was wondering if there is some legal way for me to transfer the ownership/mortgage from me to my roommate if I were to die. That way he would just continue paying on the existing mortgage and be able to stay in the house, instead of having to move out with my estate selling it. Bought the house for $130k, still about $110k on mortgage. House is worth $300k. I live in Colorado.
Let me know if you need any further information to give help.

    Thanks!!!

Getting Divorce/Dissolution but stuck in a mortgage with her and her parents that's only 3 months old. How can i get out?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:32 PM PST

Story short my wife forced (by which I mean I really wasn't interested, but my options were go along or get divorced. Ironic I know) into buying a house with her and and her almost step father. About a month and a half in she told me she wanted a divorce.

I have plans to move out very soon, but I don't know what to do about getting off the deed and mortgage. I'm slightly worried that without me, they might not be able to afford and at 23 I don't want to be forced into bankruptcy or whatever because of something I really wasn't in the least bit interested in the first place.

So what are my possible options at the moment?

Just started working about two years ago when I graduated college and I still live with my parents. As mentioned I have absolutely no credit history. I have about 10k in checking and 30k in savings. Is it worth even trying to get a loan? People keep telling me I'm SOL due to no credit. What should I do?

    Setting goals for 2020

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PST

I'm a college student who will be graduating next semester with an English degree with a focus in Creative Writing. With the understanding that this probably doesn't open very many doors for me in my immediate future, I wanted to set a few goals for myself and ask for feedback.

    • Set a goal of 30 hours/week of paid income
    • Set a goal of 110 hours/month working any set jobs and freelance work.
    • Put any extra income into savings.
    • Attempt to find a job with consistent hours to allow for scheduling more freelance work
    • Attempt to find work that pays at least 10/hr if not more by the end of 2020
    • Begin budgeting for further education

Are these realistic goals? Should I set any more? Any recommendations/tips for a soon to be graduate in the real world?

Employer wont give me direct deposit. What can i do?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:13 AM PST

If this is the wrong place I'm sorry, direct me where to go!

So I started working for this company and I filled out my direct deposit form with all of my information and everything was good. About a month later, still no direct deposit. I asked them why and they told me that form is outdated and I had to bring in a voided out check. I have an online bank, so I had to order them and wait for them to come.

It's now been two months, my personal checks came in, I voided one out and handed it to my manager and they said they would give it to the GM to give to HR when he comes in.

Now it's month three. My voided check just sits in the office for weeks. I know this because one of my managers asked me about it and showed it to me. He even sent a picture of it to HR.

I just got transferred to a new store with the same company and I now have a paycard instead of it being direct deposited to my account. They are telling me if I want direct deposit I will have to bring in another voided check and it will take them a month to set it up.

Its been a four month fight with them to just give me direct deposit. I hate this feeling of not being able to do anything. What are my options? Can I even do anything?

    Edit: Added more details.

UPDATE: The reason I have a paycard now is because they are not doing paper checks anymore and they signed me up for a paycard (even though they have my direct deposit info) LOADED with fees (I lost about $15 from my check) and it won't even activate. I'm on the phone with the card company right now as they try to figure out why it isn't activating. All I know is this is awful and I want it to end.

UPDATE: My card that they elected to give me is not working because my company never sent them my information so they have nothing to validate it against when I try to activate the card.

I'm 17 and looking to move out at the end of next year. However, I have very little money saved up and have no idea about planning for bills and expenses. Any advice?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:35 PM PST

Hey y'all! I'm 17, just about to finish year 11 and enter my final year of high school (in Aus btw) but the problem is, I know nothing about financing, bills and saving money. For a bit of background, I work 2 jobs (one on Saturday and one on Sunday) which nets me between $150 and $200 a week. Speaking to my mates who also work, this is probably a half of what they make which has me worried. I currently have $400 in savings but I'm also looking at getting another job for a bit more cash flow to help put some money away. I do however have $1000 that I owe to my dad, but that should be paid off by the end of the year.

In terms of assets however, I feel I'm extremely well off compared to others. If I've worked it out correctly, I have nearly $20,000 worth. This includes the 2 classic cars I've bought, restored and paid for with my own cash, all my prospecting supplies, downhill skating gear and other miscellaneous goods including gold and silver.

My main worry however is that I've never been good at saving money. I've never had more than $1000 in savings at once, and I want to be able to move out soon after I turn 18. I have little to no expenses that I have to worry about, but I still can't seem to put money away. Is there anything I can do about this? Should I sell some of my belongings? Any advice is much appreciated!

    Apportioning my 403(b) investments

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:06 PM PST

My work offers me a number of different Fidelity funds to put my 403(b) contributions in to. The Fidelity Freedom 2055 Fund-Class K seems like the catch-all option I should put the bulk or all of my money in to as a 35 year old. There is also a Fidelity Strategic Income Fund (pretty sure FADMX), a Fidelity US Bond Index Fund - Premium Class, Low Prices Stock Fund - Class K, International Index Fund - Premium Class, Emerging Market Fund - Premium Class, U.S Bond Index Fund - Premium Class, and a Fidelity 500 Index Fund - Premium Class.

I was thinking, based on the info in the sidebar, that maybe I should be doing more like 60% in to the general Freedom 2055 and then allocating the other 40% across something like 20% to the 500 Index fund, 10% to the International Index fund, and 10% to the U.S. Bond Index Fund.

If I don't choose anything 100% will go in to the Fidelity Freedom 2055 Fund by company default.

I have no other investments and $10,000 in the account I can move over from a previous retirement plan.

This info is all from a little Fidelity info booklet, and does not have much info about the investments other than brief descriptions, but please let me know if you need any more info and I will try and get it.

    Best Bank for International Travel

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:25 AM PST

I am curious on people's opinions/personal experiences with banks and international travel. I'm in the US and will be living in Europe for a couple years. I know I can't have every feature I want at one place, but since I plan on opening an account where I'll be locally once I'm there, I'm more worried about the widespread availability of ATMs and low fees. Anyone else an expat and can give some guidance?

    Thanks in advance

Selling my car: told not to make last $600 payment by buyer

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:58 PM PST

I live in Toronto. I am trying to sell my car. I have $600 remaining on a car payment. I called "YourCar4Cash" to buy this car off of me, and the man told me to NOT make this final payment. He told me, that upon our meeting, I should (1) give him my loan number from the bank, (2) exact amount on the car owing and (3) the per diem for tomorrow (as I plan on selling the car tomorrow.

I told him that I was already planning on paying the car off myself before meeting with him, and he told me not to, and instead he will pay off the remaining loan when we make the transfer of ownership.

I don't understand the point of this. So my questions are, (1) should I trust this and (2) can you explain why this is beneficial versus simply paying the car off myself. and lately if you have experience with this company or a similar situation, I'm trying not to get screwed. Helpppppp :)

Need help with debt and getting everything in order

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:38 AM PST

Hey everyone, due to some bad choices when I was younger I have some CC debt in collection.

The total sum of my debt is just above $6,000.

I have one in collections for $2,000 that I am afraid will be suing me very soon.

Here is my total monthly expenses and what I make in a month.

    I make around $2,200 a month.

    Rent: 494

    Internet: $55

    Gas for heating: $30

Transportation: I take transit and have a free bus pass from my work but when I work late I will take an Uber home. This is usually only once a week and is about $13. So monthly it is $52.

    Pet insurance: $60

    Cat food: $45.

    My food: $75 a month

This is everything I can think of for my monthly expenses.

I know I can start paying down debt, I just have no clue where to start and I need some help. I don't know how to make payments now that things are already in collections. I just need to know where to start.

Return an item after you've already earned credit card points?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:18 PM PST

I have the Amazon Prime Rewards card and I love it! Recently, I bought a very expensive item on Amazon and was looking forward to the $15 back I would be getting. However, said item is defective and I have to return it. If I wait until after my statement, when I've already received the points, will they just be subtracted in my next statement? In this case, if I were to use the points, could I have negative points on my account?

I'm only asking here because I know this is not a super unique situation, and I really don't want to comb through the 500 page cardholder agreement to find an answer.

    401k Question

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:43 PM PST

Here's my situation.... I've been with my job for 14 years and have put into a 401k through my job the whole time. I borrowed 5k several years ago and was paying it back the past couple of years. I still owe about $2k. Well I found a better job opportunity and hope to start that job early December and they also offer 401k.

I'm not sure what my options are as far as my current 401k with what's already sitting there and what I still owe. Anyone have any insight on how that works?

    Recommendations for IRA management companies

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:27 PM PST

I am about to leave my job to go back to school full time. I've been working here for 12 years and have a respectable 401(k) account. I had been planning on rolling it into an IRA at E*Trade or some other bare-bones company, but now I think I might need something else.

I don't have much savings outside the 401(k) (took many many years to dig myself out of debt, but made sure to take advantage of my company's 401(k) matching) so I might need to dip into that for educational expenses. At the very least, I want to know my options are for withdrawals including tax implications.

What is a good company that offers reasonably priced IRA management with financial and tax advisors? I'm not really a fan of Fidelity, but haven't dealt with anyone else so don't know if that's well founded.

I am looking for good value; I know you get what you pay for so am willing to pay extra for help navigating IRS issues, but also don't want to pay more than I absolutely have to.

Travel to Austin, TX from Grand Rapids, MI

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:33 PM PST

Hey all you good people! My friend is trying to take a trip down to Austin during the new year. I've talked to her about taking the Amtrak down to save over a flight. But was wondering if any of you have ideas or actual deals that you can point her in the right direction with. Thank you!
