First of all, sorry for the long title. I am desperately trying to find an answer for this insane bill.

Long story short I had prostatitis and had to go to an urologist after my school's health service failed to gave me anything. This is just the first doctor visit I made in years and all he did were giving me antibiotics. I thought it's done since copay for office visit is only $20

But nope, one month later I received EOB and boom $1300 diagnostic lab bill. I was shocked. I am just a student and the debt already bigger than the mountain nearby. Aetna said the test was not necessary, PLUS it was out of network. I have no idea that a doctor in-network can send your urinalysis to out-of-network lab. And no way I have $1300 to pay right now.

Please, anyone tell me what to do. I searched in r/Insurance for a day and got many mixed answer: call the doctor office, call the company insurance, file a complaint to CA Commissioner... It confused the heck out of me. Any advice is greatly greatly appreciated.

    Car hit while parked question

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:36 PM PST

While on vacation, my car was hit by a driver sliding down a hill during a snow storm. I've filed a claim with my insurance for the damage to the bumper and everything is being processed accordingly.

My question is this - my car now has a loud "lawn mower" sound when the engine is on that definitely wasn't there before the accident. The insurance adjuster just left me a message saying that he had the body shop figure how the cause of the sound and that he has determined its "too far" from the site of the impact and therefore not covered in the claim.

What are my options to protest or push back since I'm certain whatever is broke and causing the sound wasn't there before the accident?

Afni trying to collect from car accident, but we were insured. Will we have to pay?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:32 PM PST

My husband was in a car accident in August (in Dupage County, IL). He was fully insured through Progressive. Additionally, he was driving for Lyft at the time and was on his way to pick up a ride, which means that Lyft's insurance applied at the time of the accident. On top of that, we had purchased the extra insurance add-on through Progressive for Lyft drivers. I think he was as insured as a person can be.

On the scene, he was ticketed for the accident. He didn't believe it was his fault, and he pled not guilty in court. The ticket was eventually dismissed because the other party didn't make an appearance. So there is no "guilty" verdict against him.

Our insurance company has declared the claim closed, and their website shows that they made $0 in payments to the other party. I can't find anything on the website that says that they officially declare the accident not his fault, but this suggests to me that he was declared not at fault by our insurance. I'll verify that with them tomorrow.

Today he received a letter from a collection agency called Afni, trying to collect $6737.57 on behalf of State Farm. The letter says that State Farm says that he is at fault and they want the money that they paid out to their client to be paid back to them by us.

I know my next steps are to contact our insurance company, and to send a certified letter to the collection agency asking them to prove the debt is ours. But it's late at night, tomorrow is a holiday, and I'm worrying like crazy. My question is: if our insurance company has declared the accident not my husband's fault, and the other insurance company says that it is, how does that get settled? Is it possible that we'll need to pay $6700+, despite having all the insurance we could at the time?

    Thank you!

Hit a parked car. Want advice

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 03:12 PM PST

I hit (really lightly) a parked car and scratched it up a bit. I left a note. The owner called and wants to get a quote to get the scratch buffed out. We decided not to go through insurance since our deductables are probably higher than the cost of fix the scratches. This is my first 'accident'. Anything I need to look out for or suggestions you may have? Should I get insurance involved? Should I pay the entire cost of fixing it?

I was backed into at a stop light and the other driver doesn’t want to go through insurance (OH)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 03:44 PM PST

So earlier tonight I was sitting at a light behind a truck who's driver reversed into me a a low speed (>5 mph). He claimed he was trying to get into the turn lane. We got out, his truck had no visible damage, but he knocked my license plate off and cracked my bumper with his hitch. We both and my 8 month old who was in the car were 100% unharmed. He was apologetic and said he would pay for the damage, but didn't want to report it to insurance. Since I had my baby in the car I didn't want to stay long, so I took his phone number and a picture of his drivers license and left. I just gave him my name and told him I would be in contact.

Personally, I'm okay with not going through insurance, however now that I'm home and have a minute to think, I'm a little apprehensive about a few things:

    1. Getting a quote on the damage won't be easy as both my husband and I work. It would be a hardship to be without my car for a day or longer.
    2. If he doesn't agree with the price and I have to report it to my insurance, the nature of the damage is heavily leaning against me (as stated before he backed into me)
    3. Did I mess up by not taking picture there or getting his insurance info? I've never been in an accident before so I was a little flustered at the time.

This happened in Ohio if that matters. Thanks so much in advance!

    Hitting twice in 5 days....

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:06 PM PST

Hit a deer Friday, it made significant damage to the front including the bumper, a headlight, and fog lights.

Made the claim through insurance, but they never sent an adjuster out but I had it estimated at my dealer for $7,214.00.

Hit ANOTHER deer tonight (5 days later) and this time it, in my opinion, totaled it out. I mean it's pretty damn bad.

My question is... How does this affect my first claim? How will this work? Will I get what was estimated on the first claim for $7214.00 and then also get whatever they estimate the new damage at? And as the first one is $7200 then this one is beyond double that which in turn should be over the threshold to total the vehicle.

So let's say they give me the $7200 for the first one, and let's say I fixed it prior to hitting this second deer, which I didn't, but I could have, and then let's say they total it off of the second claim...

    Can I get the $7200 + cost of totaling the car($15,000 +-)?

Will I get both? I mean I guess I just don't know how this will play out and what I'm able to get. I'm just trying to cover my ass and make sure I get the most from my insurance.

Pics are included and it's a 2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with all options. The first 4 pictures are the new damage and the others are the first damage from 5 days ago.

Thanks in advance for any help y'all can give!

[MA] Successfully received payment for Home Depot’s cart hitting my car

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:34 PM PST

    TL;DR on bottom

Just wanted to let you guys know, its always worth asking the stores that your car is parked in if their insurance covers these accidents! I had no idea they would cover removal of scratches.

About a month ago, I parked my car in the Home Depot's parking lot as I went in for a few minutes to grab some items. When I came out, there was a cart physically touching the car, and when I pushed it away to see, there were several scratches and orange paint transfer that were very visible on my car. I was pissed off since clearly a fucker who did not respect other people's property just rammed it against my car and drove off. There was a employee near by who i asked if he saw anything, to which he told me to see the manager inside. Then the home depot's manager surprisingly told me that their insurance PAYS people for damages if those damages came from a lumber cart! He took my info, and i was contacted by their ins company about a week after.

However, The ins company's adjuster told me that they ONLY pay for damages caused by an employee, and that she will review the security tapes and get back in touch with me. A couple days after, she told me they would cover the cost of repairs (to this day i have no idea if the damages were indeed caused by employees or if their policy is true to what the manager described. I was never told of what she found on footage.) She requested pics of damages, and a quote to get those removed. I went to a detailer, got a quote and sent that in. A day after i was issued out a check for the full amount i was quoted for!

TLDR Some asshole hit my parked car with a cart at home depot while i was shopping. Home depot's insurance covered the costs to removing scratches and paint transfer. Wanted to give a PSA in case someone found it useful.

[Massachusetts] Car crashed into mother-in-law's property, owner's insurance denying claim due to "non-permissive use"

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 09:41 AM PST

    Hi All,

My MIL recently had an issue where a car drove into some masonry on her property causing ~$1000 in damages. The driver of the car was not the owner. She filed a police report and they told her to get in touch with the owner's insurance company. The insurance company let her know that the owner has filed an affidavit of non-permissive use, so they are not liable for the damage, and that the driver is fully responsible for the damages.

Some quick Googling has seemed to reveal this is a common tactic by insurance companies to let themselves off the hook. Even though the burden of proof should be on the owner to prove that the car was stolen or used without permission, I'd imagine it's in the insurance company's best interest to accept any document shoveled at them if it would remove responsibility.

Is there any more recourse we have against the insurance company at this point? I imagine the level of headache will increase dramatically if we attempt to go after the driver and will probably end up in small claims court (although that might be where we end up either way). Would greatly appreciate advice on this complicated situation. Thanks very much in advance!

    KY motorcycle insurance question

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:28 AM PST

Hi, I have a motorcycle fully insured. Yamaha FJ09.

I purchased it like 1.5 years ago. When renewing tags this year i noticed the insurance paper had the wrong model on it. Was listed as a WR250 or some other yamaha but the vin was right. Dont know how this happened or how i never noticed. I was paying $400/year. I told my agent it was the wrong model and they said theyd fix it, the premium wouldn't change.

Now im being charged 1700 which I believe goes back all the way to the original date I insured it. Is this correct? Ive never made a claim on the policy or had a claim made. Just double checking im required to back pay the difference for their mistake.

Apologies for spelling/capitalization/grammar. I'm on mobile

    Thanks and happy holidays

Deductible and Max OOP met for the year. Are there any random medical prodecures or doctor/specialist appointments worth looking into before 2019?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:52 PM PST

My wife and I had our first baby this year and with all the associated costs she has easily met her deductible and out of pocket max for the year. She's otherwise really healthy, and can't think of anything specific she'd need to see a doctor for (outside of one more postpartum appointment). It feels like a waste to NOT take care of any potential checkups etc. this year while it's free (assuming it would be covered/not cosmetic etc).

Any suggestions for appointments/procedures worth looking into? We'd check with Cigna on coverage before setting anything up, but right now we're lost for ideas. Thanks!

Need advice on whether to repair car or claim insurance

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:45 AM PST

    Also posted on /personalfinance

TL;DR Firsthand 2009 Toyota Corolla was in an accident. Geico calls it a total loss and is offering $8800 for it. Repair will be $3500. Should I repair it out of pocket or file a claim and have my premium go up?

    —————

Got in an accident earlier this week (in Wyoming) when moving cross-country. We slipped on the icy highway, veered into the ditch, clipped a pole, and scraped along a fence. I took pictures at the scene and recorded the location. Thankfully no one was hurt, and we didn't hit any other vehicles.

Now we've made it to California, and Geico tells us the car is a total loss. The back bumper is missing, driver's side back quarter panel dented, scrapes (from wire fence) all along the passenger side, 1 headlight cracked, and 1 backlight cracked. I have a firsthand '09 Toyota Corolla (passed down from my parents) which I've taken really good care of. It's valued at ~$9800, and minus my $1000 insurance deductible, Geico is offering $8800 for the car. I have comprehensive as well as collision in my insurance policy, but Geico says repair is going to cost more than the car is worth.

We've gone to several car repair/body shops in the area and unaffiliated with Geico to ask for quotes. I've gotten two quotes for around $3500, and one at $7600. Based on google reviews, all three are highly rated. First two are small local businesses, and the third was a chain.

I am 23, and even though my dad was driving at the time of the crash, I understand it will be under my insurance if I file a claim since it is my car. Because my insurance premium will most definitely go up if I file a claim, my family thinks it's best to pay for repair out of pocket and keep the accident out of my insurance record. My dad and I will split the repair costs.

Do you all think this is the best decision? Or should we instead file the insurance claim and buy back the car at ~$2000, but have the car reclassified as salvaged? The internal car components are still in pretty good condition, and I just bought new tires this year, so it seems a waste to reclassify the car as salvaged or have it scrapped. I also don't want, nor have the funds, to buy a completely new car. Please let me know your thoughts, thank you!

    Question about leak in roof

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:40 AM PST

I have a leak in my roof around my chimney, and around a plumbing vent. The leak around the chimney hasn't really caused much damage, as the water drains down the chimney wall and into the crawlspace. I tried to seal that up, and for the most part have it at bay, but will need more rain to test.

The leak around the plumbing vent caused damage to a few kitchen cabinets. Basically the water dripped down on top of them and ruined some of the particle board on 2 cabinets. No cabinet doors were damaged. It's not major, but I'm curious if this is something I would bother making a claim for, or just repair myself. I've already sealed around the vent in a guess to where the leak is happening, but will need more rain to be sure.

My deductible is $1000. I have nationwide, but have been shopping around recently for new insurance that might lower my premiums a bit.

Any Chartered Insurance Professional over here ? How did the course help you in getting a job?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:55 AM PST

I am about to turn 26 and will be shoved off my parent's insurance plan onto my own. I have never looked into health, dental, vision insurance and need to know where to start.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:54 AM PST

Background: I am a 25F, living in Virginia, US and I work in accounting so my work has some healthcare options but I have no idea where to start on what plan to select, how copays/deductibles work etc. My parents work for a school district so have great coverage. Every time I go to urgent care or my therapist (who takes my parent's insurance), the copay is only 20 dollars.

A couple things to consider for me:

-I see a therapist once a week for some counseling relating to childhood trauma, etc. My current plan allows me to go to this therapist and only pay my copay ($20). I would like to have a similar plan if at all possible

-I wear glasses so having good vision coverage would be nice

-I occasionally go to urgent care for the usual cold, strep throat scare since my tonsils are annoying and swell up every time I get sick.

How do I get a plan that has a copay similar to what my parents have? A lot of people have told me to get a high deductible plan but I don't want to pay a 1,000 dollars every time I need to go to the doctor for something small. Also what is the difference between a deductible and a copay?

Thanks so much in advance, sorry this got long.

TL;DR: I am a 25 year old and will be kicked off my parents insurance soon. HELP. I have no idea what to do and what plan to pick. ETA: I live in the US.

    Insurance broker asking medical questions

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:57 AM PST

Our small family company is shopping for new health insurance. Our brokers (2) asked that all employees fill out an online FormFire questionnaire so that they can shop around. It asked about previous and current medical conditions for which you've filed claims. Now, I've filled this out with a previous employer and don't remember it being so in-depth, but maybe I'm mis-remembering. In any event, I was not comfortable submitting all that info but did it.

Yesterday, one of our brokers called my spouse - a company employee/part owner - on the phone to ask him why he's taking a certain treatment/prescription. I understand that insurance companies want demographic info for pricing, but isn't asking about everyone's medical history (both online and over the phone) violating HIPAA laws and/or unnecessary because of the laws about pre-existing conditions: "health insurance companies can't refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a 'pre-existing condition' (HHS.gov)"?

So, what valid reason is there for delving into our medical histories? This seems like it's not needed with ACA and creeps me out since these brokers have a chummy relationship with the family. And now they know about our reproductive medical issues that no one else is privy to, ugh.

Can anyone explain to me how I can car insurance if I don't own the vehicle yet?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:42 AM PST

Hello all, I'm hoping someone can provide me some background going into this process.

About to buy my first car ever. I am pre-approved for an auto loan at my credit union, going to test drive the car today, it's a used car. Let's say I'm ready to buy. My auto loan says it cannot close without attaining Auto Insurance. What is the best way for me to get auto insurance if I don't technically own the vehicle, is this OK? Or would I use my purchase agreement for implied value of the car etc., and turn around and talk to the insurance company about that? My terms of the loan pre-approval says it cannot close without a policy number.

TL;DR about to buy first car ever (used) with an auto loan from a bank, and unsure of all the steps that make it hang together.

Last week, my car was parked in front of my home. It was a snowy day and sometime between 12pm and 8pm, somebody hit into my car. They fled the scene, and I ultimately realized the damage when I was cleaning the snow off my car. I filed a police report as well. I have full coverage, however I have a high deductible ($1000). Rear Ended, guy hit me is uninsured. We are going to handle it outside of insurance? I feel like I really messed up... any advice?

I also didn't get a police report. UGH! I live in minnesota where we have "no fault" and I didn't want my premium to go up. I also really felt for the guy, it was his birthday and he was having a real bad week. I didn't want to get him in trouble with the law.. He rear ended me, I'll need a new bumper.

I realize that it all comes down to trust now and hopefully the guy pays out, but if he doesn't is there anything I can do? Sue in small claims court? I feel like I just screwed myself over.. .what would you guys do?
