Most affordable way to get MS Office?

Do I really need to pay $8.25/month PER user to have downloadable office apps? Seems like a large expense.

What to do when someone has a VERY similar name?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:15 AM PST

So my wife and I have a photo booth rental business, registered with the state as an LLC.

Shortly after, another rental company has been using our same name but in a different order. For example, we are APPLES AND ORANGES NASHVILLE. The other company is using NASHVILLE APPLES AND ORANGES PICTURE BOOTH.

With the other photo booth company switching one word around and adding "picture booth" would this be grounds to seek a lawyer to serve and decease?

Lost with Logistics & Records... Help?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2018 04:51 AM PST

    Hi,

So I'm just starting out and I mean seriously just starting and I'm swamped with information, options and everything in between.

So according to the business planning crash course I'm taking, it's necessary to have a record keeping system for my home business. I'm just slightly confused and I need someone to clarify things for me.

I'm using Shopify so that's the POS, right? It's where I put my inventory and payment gateway

And then there's Freshbooks - this is for my managing the business expenses?

I'm assuming these two don't function the same way.

I have subscribed to these services but I still haven't used them so I really don't know the details yet.

I feel there's something I also need. I feel like I need a spreadsheet that has all the items/tools I bought that I work with. I thought it would be easier for me to know at a glance how much each item costed me so when I'm working with that particular tool I know how much to price? Or is that stupid? If that's not stupid, does either Shopify of FreshBooks do that? Or do I need another program to do that?

Finally I need a spreadsheet that I list my inventory in so I have all my shop items in one place but I'm assuming maybe Shopify can do that right? So it's a waste of time to have that in two places?

Lastly, I use YNAB for my personal expenses. That's also different from Freshbooks, right? If so, when the time comes, should I also use YNAB to track my business finances or should I not put anything there about it and simply in Freshbooks?

This might all sound stupid but I really need someone to talk to me like I'm really stupid and explain in "SIMPLE" language (jargon free) how this all works. I would really appreciate it and it will make my life easier.

    Thank you.

Is anyone using an affordable option for forms creation and having our clients sign digitally?

We are talking, maybe, 3 forms here....so not a power user by any means.

Instagram - is it worth it for small business? What do you put on yours?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:31 PM PST

I am curious about the way small businesses that aren't creative-based utilize Instagram.

When used correctly, Instagram can be a powerful tool in marketing. But there is an underlying culture that people are wary of business social media, because they hate being marketed to wherever they go. Ads are easy to ignore.

But do you curate an effective Instagram account without seeming like you're trying to just 'sell' your products through the platform? What kind of content do you share?

(I'm a photographer, so to me, this question is strangely complicated. I sell imagery, moments, memories. Instagram is a platform that shares imagery, moments and memories for free. It is odd to try to avoid looking like I am blatantly marketing myself on the platform!)

    Who is hosting your email?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:04 PM PST

Been using rackspace for a while and they are phenomenal with support. I am paying $11.50/month for email and office 365 apps.

MS offers email and Office for $8.25/month. Debating leaving rackspace to save the $3.25/user/month.

    Thoughts?

Starting a soap bussiness at 14

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST

Hello! I found this subbreddit just now and I'll just add a quick back story to this. I'm a home schooled 14 year old and been wanting to have business for quite a while. I want to save money so I can go to Harvard University and help my family who are in the Philippines struggling with money. I finish my schoolwork fairly fast and have all A's as of right now. I study everyday to try to skip a few grades.

I don't know much about business things so here it goes:

    1. When opening a business bank account, is pay pal a good company to depend on?

    2. Is wix a good website builder?

    3. What can I do (legally) when someone keeps on false claiming that my product is harming them with no evidence?.. (Sorry if that doesn't make sense)

    4. How do I determine a price for my product?

    5. Any tips on starting a business?

Thank you for taking some time to read this post :)

Have an idea - need advice!

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 01:38 PM PST

So I have a way to make money, but I'm not sure of the legalities of it, I guess.

    Here's the jist of it:

A social media group, crowd funded items. People pay a set price on a specific item to pool their $$ together to buy said item. Your spot is reserved by a number. Once every spot has been filled, participants sent e transfers to the admin (myself) and a random number is drawn, the person with that number then buys the item from the group for $1.

The thing is, I will profit a bit off every item for my time and effort. My question is.. How can I do this as a legit business? I dont want to do anything shady. I want to be able to have verified income & pay taxes. How will my money in vs money out look or be recorded? I'm in BC Canada if that helps. Any advice is appreciated!

Thoughts on businesses that have small success then start selling junk, or quickly shut down?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:56 PM PST

It seems like a some businesses, planned or unplanned end their company after a small initial success.

They milk it as long as it can go with a huge drop in quality, sometimes it can last indefinitely if they get people behind their brand. Other times they have small initial success the same situation, with an immediate end of their company because the costs to run the business are too great/not making enough to live on.

What are your thoughts of this? Is this a normal strategy to put a genuine good product with the expectation that it should make some profit and shut down. On to the next business? Alternatively is it possible for people to plan for a small niche that is done so low cost and with good margins that they can operate with a small community indefinitely?

Did this employee disrespect me or am I just overreacting? What should I do?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:06 PM PST

I am a receptionist/co-manager. I work at my family business and we are a small customer service business. It is an employee to client relationship, so the client requests a service to be done and the manager assigns the client with an employee to complete the service. After the service has been completed, the employee writes a ticket(the total amount of service completed for the client) and then the employee hands the payment to the receptionist or manager.

We have a word by mouth policy that it is the employees' responsibility to take payment from their clients. However, the employees may ask for assistance from the receptionist or manager to take payment from their clients, if the employees have client appointment waiting or walk in clients waiting.

This morning, it was busy with walk in clients and client appointments. So the employee payment assistance policy is appropriate in this scenario. As I am diligently assisting clients and managing the front end, a client walk up to the front and asks for the total of the service completed. I am more than happy to assist the client for a speedy payment process, which I politely ask the client of the service completed and charge the client accordingly. Then as soon as I receive the payment from the client, one of the employee walks up with the ticket and puts it right at the front desk where I stand and the employee immediately walks away without letting me know which client this was for. I stood there bewildered and politely ask the employee "Who is this for?" The employee replies, "It is for the client you just received payment from.", then the employee says "Pay attention.". I was furious about that last rhetorical comment. I immediately told the manager about it, word for word. I cooled down within a few minutes and went back to work as nothing happened because I know it is going to be a long busy day.

I remember that this employee has done this many times before and I have told the manager of this issue last week. Either the manager has not discussed it with the employee yet, the employee is straight up disrespectful, or I am just overreacting about the situation.

I am more than willing to help the employees, but I am not a mind reader. I need them to communicate with me, so mistakes don't happen. I do my best to treat all the employees equally and don't want any conflict between me and the employees.

How to Acquire a Finance Company for My PC Company?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:31 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I run a fairly new PC company, where we fix PC's locally, build custom PC's occasionally for business when they tell us what they need, and (what I'm hoping to make the bulk of the business) sell pre-made powerful PC'S on the website.

I started very recently, and I'm a broke college student, so advertisint has been largely word of mouth (I plan on doing some real advertising soon). So far I've sold two PC's.

I've noticed that lots of other computer companies have financing options; eg $76 dollars a month instead or $2400 all at once, etc.

I know of one company that does this, Bread, and I am wondering how much money my company has to be making before they will consider doing financing, because I think that would could my business to get more sales.

    Thanks in advance.

Help to create a better pricing system for our customers and ourselves.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:29 AM PST

I am not sure this is the correct place to seek help or guidance, if not could you please direct me to a more appropriate sub.

At the company I work for we sell all sorts of backyard accessories and luxuries ranging from swing sets, sheds and pergolas, all the way to hot tubs, decks and patios with more in between.

Every month the company moves its prices around to create seasonal sales promotions and incentives to buy. The way these are presented to the customer in one of our six retail locations is a series of price sheets, one for each product we sell. We have around 20 price sheets that need to be printed every month, sorted out, and sent to the stores.

These become very time consuming to print and ship to each of the locations and I know there is a better way to solve the problem of informing our customers with the pricing they can look at and take home to their SO to discuss what they would like to purchase.

My budding idea is to have everything on a single tablet in each store that can display the price sheet you are interested in and be able to send it to your email or something similar so you have access to it at home. It needs to be quick, easy, and simple for the customer to obtain and access this information.

Does anyone have any ideas or directions I could go in to start creating a solution? Where should I start?

Working for a family business and not sure what to do anymore?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 10:17 AM PST

I've worked in a business with my brother for 3 and a half years. I am not a stakeholder in it or cofounder, just helping to grow it, mainly doing marketing. I trust my brother will pay me what I deserve once we make some money, but I'm doing this for free right now and I can't do this anymore. I've been waiting for a ROI and it's taking way too long - in the mean time I have a part time job, but I can't even afford to move out of my parents house right now. I only went to school for two years and a large reason I didn't go back was because I was helpful the business would turn into something.

It's really been a grind and I feel taken advantage of. I should have been more assertive and told him I needed to be paid but the way I thought of it was that if he didn't pay me then all that money would go back to the business and essentially we would be able to grow it quicker and make more money in the long run. There was a period of time where I got paid (not much) but it stopped because I guess we couldn't afford it anymore (even though he pays his rent with it..). But I can't live like this anymore.

I've been considering going back to school and either dropping the business altogether or just doing a little on the side here or there. I've always had the "entrepreneurial gene" but I just don't even care at the moment- I just need steady income and maybe I'll start a business later in life.

I recently discussed that I needed to get paid and he said he could pay me monthly (a very small amount) and we will check back in three months and see how things are looking. It isn't promising and all of this gives me anxiety. I just feel stuck. Like this has held me back and if I hadn't done it I could've gone to college and been starting a career by now. Would really appreciate advice.
