Lots of land coming my way and I'm stuck. small business

Lots of land coming my way and I'm stuck.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 12:27 PM PST

Family owns alot of farm land that is currently owned 33 33 33 percent between my uncles and dad. We have 6 children that it will then be split to 16%. Me and my cousin are the only ones that farm and have anything to do with it. Will I need to buyout the other 4 or can I continue to use the land as the manager and never pay them off? All the lands in a llc so Idk if that makes any difference.

I want to just thank everyone for the helpful advice. It truly means alot to me that you took your time to help me out. I'm sorry if I came off as saying this is a bad thing when it's more then some people have I'm just worried.

What education courses/ qualifications are required to start/ own a business?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2018 01:13 AM PST

About me- 23 y/o, earning pretty a decent salary working away in the mines (2 weeks on 2 weeks off) so I've got plenty of time to study. I've always had an interest for owning my own business but haven't really had any direction where to start as far as education goes.

I'm pretty good financially and maths is definitely my strong suit, but I'm just not sure what other qualities / qualifications are needed to start up or own a business?

    Any tips would be appreciated!

Distributors - How Do You Handle Return to Vendor with Outright Purchase?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2018 03:42 AM PST

We distribute grocery items to supermarkets, usually on consignment (the product remains our property while on the shelf, right up until the consumer buys it, then the supermarket remits the takings minus their commission).

Recently we started working with a large supermarket chain who routinely work on Outright Purchase - great in that we get paid the full amount for the product early on, but worrying in that there is a Return to Vendor clause where they will return to us any product that remains unsold at the end of the shelf life of the item, with a requirement that we give them a full refund.

As we have no control over their pricing, placement, merchandising etc. of these products, nor do we have an insight into how sales are performing over the life of them, it is a worry that we might end up with a financial liability a year or so after we have made a sale. How best should I hedge against a shock RTV other than simply building an emergency RTV fund? Thanks!

    Looking for a new ERP

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 11:58 AM PST

I was wondering if anyone here is knowledgable about ERP software and might be willing to field a few questions?

I am currently operating a business with about $2m in gross revenue and were using a very antiquated accounting program that is extremely difficult to manage. It operated on Linux and uses some antiquated database that cannot be accessed from within the program, so global changes like pricing have to be entered manually.

I've looked at Netsuite and Accumatica and while Netsuite is everything I like, it's quite expensive. Accumatica seems incomplete and requires some bandaids to handle our unique situation.

Here's my primary feature request, an active kitting solution. Basically, we buy product in volume and repack it in different sized containers. It's difficult to manage inventory and keep all available packaging on the shelf, so some stuff is made to order where we will pack the materials as at the time of order placement. I need the software to actively deduct inventory from a base part and sell it under a secondary part number. Some software calls this kitting, but they require the kits be made in advance. I need it on the fly. This is just one of several issues if someone has the time to help.

Paging /u/Todd_wittwicky as I saw you have some experience in this field.

    Thanks!

    Business checking account

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 07:51 PM PST

Hello guys! I just wanted to know which bank has a great or even the best deal on getting a business bank account. I went to Wells Fargo and they stated $300 to open one while Regions stated $150. Or possibly a credit union. The account will be rarely used. I only need it to help build business credit. (BTW I'm in Atlanta Georgia if that makes a difference.)

Christmas gifts for new business owners?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 06:17 PM PST

    Hey all,

My parents recently started a restaurant this year, things have been going pretty well and I wanted to get them a gift that either related to the business or would help their business out. Since a lot of you here have small business experience and know what things might be needed/wanted from that perspective, any suggestions?

    Thanks!

New Mexico to mark tax-free day on 'Small Business Saturday'

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 05:05 AM PST

I'm a new business owner and I'd like some advice to help promote my business.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 05:05 PM PST

I just started a business this year as a personal assistant and in the process of promoting myself, I realized that I should have certificates in certain things for people to know I am a proficient worker and I can do what they need me to without sacrificing their security.

I promote myself as an extra hand for people who need just a few hours a week to get the simple, but necessary work taken care of so they can focus on everything else. I take certain things off their plate to help them get organized to the point where they decide whether they want to continue working with me or if they can continue on without me.

I have heard of HIPPA to protect people's medical and personal information, but I'm interested to know if there's anything else people would like me to have for their benefit.

Also other advice is greatly appreciated.

Suggestions for Quickbooks or Other Accounting Software Expense Categories?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 03:38 PM PST

I'm looking over all of my info on quickbooks and wondering if I'm in need of some better/different categories. Curious what you guys mostly use.

For my part, most everything falls into a few major categories. I've got advertising/marketing for all those kinds of expenses. General office expenses for odds and ends for the office. Job supplies for things directly related to what I sell to clients. A facility furnishing category for items I purchase for longer-term use furnishing my new office. Plus a second furnishing category for items over $2,500 that require depreciation. One category for tracking a certain expense I pass through 1:1 on behalf of my clients.

One thing that I'm not sure if I should make a new category for or not is other 1:1 pass through expenses from my clients. So if they ask me to fedex something and send the bill, or get them an uber and send the bill, or whatever. Not sure if an existing category is fine or if it calls for something new.

In any event, I'm curious to hear what kinds of categories people are using.

    Entrepreneurial Education Needed

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 03:15 PM PST

    Hello,

I have been working at a Fortune 500 company starting up other affiliates as a part of my job. It has been every exciting and informative. I find myself wishing these types of services, i.e. local government incentives, process establishment, business setup, etc., were there to help small businesses as well. I am starting a business focusing on small business owners to help aid in their startup establishment and also identify and solve the business gaps of more established small business.

I am trying to understand the mindset of small business owners in more detail. So my question is, what type of business startup support do you wish was in place when you first decided to become an entrepreneur? Is this idea something you would find viable.?

Thank you all for educating me on the mindset of entrepreneurs.

what are low cost to start up + steady small profit businesses?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 02:30 PM PST

I am looking for businesses that are ecommerce that is small profits but low start up cost. A product/industry that is a consumer product that has a slight profit margins but sells quickish and is word of mouth marketing.

I know of businesses online that only repair/alter headphones. Something that isn't much cost to start and isn't high cost to market.

Business partner family bereavement. What do I do?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 02:11 PM PST

Hello Fellow business owners. I have a small business based in the UK and work alongside a partner. Sadly her Mother is really unwell and reaching the end of her life. I am still continuing to work on building this business in her absence as she is spending a considerable amount of time visiting and staying. I have tried to have the "you need to step back" conversation (good will suggestions) and I am concerned about progressing the business as I only have a small amount of time to make this work on my savings!

This is obviously an incredibly hard situation. I feel very sad about this. But I have to make progress. I am also doing the lions share of the work now alone.

How does this work? We discussed it but she tried to step up her game for a while and then naturally this could not be kept up. All meetings are interrupted by hospital calls and arrangements. In an employment situation you would have to be there or not be there but this is such a grey area.

I feel incredibly cold worrying about this as her worries are just awful but also the clock is ticking for me and if I don't build the business enough I will have to get a job. She is not in that situation. Savings and help from her Husband's family will mean she doesn't need the income.

    How do I handle this?

My business was offered to be absorbed and a salary position. What do I do?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 01:30 PM PST

I am a small business owner that works in low voltage/security. We are doing about $300,000 in business this year and with newer clientele just these last 3 months we have bigger jobs coming up in 2019.

I was offered an opportunity for a partnership with another company that does electrical with an immense amount of high end clientele begging for them to do low voltage work. They dont have the guidance and leadership and have been getting by for a long time with no direction. The owner came to me through a connection and said he wants to build a brand from the ground up and have me lead that division, build teams, use his assets, trucks, employees, billing dept, project managers, etc.

Offering a salary position, 401k, healthcare, office and a percentage of all jobs brought in and invoiced under that division. Its a no brainer. He's done this twice before with two other people and he didn't find the right person putting in the effort he was looking for. I asked what are you looking for out of my company and he said "keep it, run it but I want you to be employed by me. If you want to keep your clients you can. If all goes well we can set a date for them to be officially absorbed into the company."

To show you what he's making, a job I would get for $5,000, he's getting $50,000 for with the same amount of labor and product. Insane.. He said "I want you to come back to me with a number for a salary. I want you to make exactly what you've been making per week but do it with me and take on this roll and grow from there." Now I have zero idea where to start!

Now I'm a one man show. I do the work by myself and if I need I have a guy or two that will come help me if need be. The work load if I take this will triple but I will have people working under me doing most of the labor so it'll even out. I'll have the PM's ordering parts. I'll be planning the jobs and making sure all goes smoothly. So where do I start with salary? I said to him Im going to think it over. He told me "I want you to be comfortable. I want you to WANT to work here and want to do everything. If I feel your numbers too low Im not going to accept it."

To break it down; $300,000 in business 2018 (so far). Roughly 1/3 is purchasing product. I make about 40-60% on the product as a markup which I won't with him anymore. My labor rates range from $65-$150 per hour, per man. Jobs average 10-60 hours per. I have insurance, trucks, gas, expenses which accounts for about $20,000 this year. Im projecting another 100K to be added next year from new clientele gained for 2019.

Do you guys have any guidance or any formula I can use to come up with a number. I'd hate to come over with what he was thinking. I want to see what you guys come up with and ill let you know what my number is. I dont want to influence any answers. Thanks guys!

Edit: Forgot to mention that since our meeting he's put me in charge of a small job to make sure I know what I'm talking about and basically giving me a test run.

TLDR: Given a great oppurtunity to partner with a multi-million dollar company and absorb mine over time. Was offered a salary position and need to figure out what a great starting salary number would be.

FM Expressions review for shirt designers.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 12:32 PM PST

    TLDR; Dont do it.

I wanted to put a honest review of my experience with FMExpressions and Heat Transfers so anyone looking to change their process or who is new to the game can know what the deal is.

A little background. I starting using third party DTG printing. I was looking to getting into some more customization, branding and a larger profit so I decided to make a change and start taking everything into my own hands.

I live in a big city, so my apartment isn't huge. I couldn't invest in a screen printing press because there is just no where to put it. My local screen printer was quoting me at $18 per shirt for a one color design on the front. I should have shopped around more.

I did a ton of research online and settled into a heat press. Reviews were mixed but I figured if I could get a great Heat Press and find a reliable transfer company I'd be golden. I purchased a heat press from HeatPressNation and the heat press community pointed me in the direction of FMExpressions for Plastisol transfers. They were suppose to be comparable to traditional screen printing - so they said.

FMExpressions has this deal where you can get full color transfers for $1.15 each with a $65 set up fee. That sounded great and that was the direction I decided to go in. It wasn't until I was finalizing everything that I learned it was a minimum of 75 transfers per order. I ended up spending $152 on each design. I had three designs so it was $455 total. On top of that I got a gang sheet of labels which was only $50. I dropped $500 with this company all together.

It was stress and disappointment from there out. Two of my designs were printing fantastically. They didn't have any small lines or details so the process went smoothly. The issues came when I was printing my work with smaller details and my labels.

First - With my more detailed design the smaller details were not sticking down completely. This very much bothered me because I decided to go with FMExpressions to take quality into my own hands as much as possible. It wasn't very noticeable but I knew it would pose a threat to quality and withstanding time.

Secondly - With my labels they either wouldn't transfer to the shirt at all or half f it wouldn't transfers. The ones that did transfer successfully would have small edges that curled up.

I contacted FMExpressions and at first they tried to tell me it was my machine or it was my fault for not following the instructions correctly. Finally, they recognized the labels must have been printed wrong on their end and offered to re-print them. I took that offer. I got my reprints and thought most of my problems were solved. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Some of the labels printed fine while others were just as bad as the previous ones. They refused to refund me on the damages shirts even though they admitted to it being their mistake.

I ended up going back and forth with them for a very long time.

After dealing with a go around for the company they asked me to send the product back so they could test it. They didn't believe me. After "testing" it they claimed it worked fine and I wasn't applying enough pressure. Originally they told me the pressure should be set at 60. Now instead of giving me a number they telling me that I just need to apply very heavy pressure. But won't tell me how much. Obviously this was something I already tried and hadn't work.

They said they would send the product back and I told them I didn't want it because I didn't want to ruin any more shirts that they wouldn't reimburse for their faultiness. They ignored my request for a refund and sent me the product back minus the ones they used...even though I told them I didn't want to used it because it ruined shirts even after they admitted to one batch being their fault and wouldn't correct the loss.

Still they sent it anyway, or so I found out when $500 worth of transfers came in a torn up and damaged bag that was not strong enough to hold what's inside. They refuse to take responsibility and at this point it's a joke. They sent almost 10 lbs of transfers back in a paper envelope.

    Private tutor start-up (UK)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 11:24 AM PST

Hi all, So I've been tutoring using an online platform for a year and a half now but without the ability to promote myself without giving up 30% of any income to the platform in question. I've decided that since we have moved house, then why not start a business. First client turning up tomorrow, quite slow on getting the word around so a kinda good start. Sadly tutoring is kind of seasonal and I need to be able to have an at least semi stable income from this, at least enough so that I can send my daughter to nursery to I can teach, plan or expand the business idea.

I was thinking YouTube. Fateful words I'm sure you've all heard alot, I know alot of people get screwed by thinking it is easier than it is but hey I'm gunna be a stay at home for a few years so why not right?

Podcasts I'm interested but unsure about.

Patreon would be easy to monetize but harder to sell I think.

Writing study books on one hand sounds like a good idea but on the other I don't want these kids to treat my word as gospel and do their own research too.

If you have any thoughts don't be afraid to share, likewise with tip and advise. It goes without saying, thanks for reading!

TLDR: Need to make my start up more engaging and earn money all year round.

My new business is about to get a lot more work, how can I prepare?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 10:36 AM PST

Hello, I am a college student looking for some advice on my small business. This is the second custom software development startup I have been a part of. The first one I wasn't a co-founder but I was with the team from the start. We did 50k in the first year. Nothing impressive, but I learned a lot in the 18 months total.

Fast forward almost two years, I am up to the plate again. This time I am leading the business with my new partner. My partner is extremely talented and experienced, knows software development inside and out with 10+ years of experience. He has also been a business owner for 5+ years but not in the software industry. I have less software development experience, but I believe I can add value to the business through strategy and leadership. I'm currently managing 10 developers at a student organization, and I have seen my old company (identical to this model) fail. So I have a lot of insights to take away from it. (Won't let us make the same mistake twice. I am extremely skeptical by nature) Anyway, he started the business back in July and just used it as a means to work for himself. This last month though I came on the team and now he wants me to be the partner with him.

We have managed to sign the biggest contract I have ever seen, and can expect a high volume of work over the next eight months. We have a "team" but nothing formal right now, so we need to get hiring, and we also need to get adding structure the business. Some things we have done recently include creating a business plan, agree on a long-term vision and goals, started reaching out to mentors for advice, started networking for more business, and started prospecting for developers and business people to formally add to the team.

Do you have any advice for me when it comes to anticipating the rush that is coming? We would ideally like to scale successfully, save up a lot of money in the company, and then invest in building a product (most likely SaaS). Cheers!

Advice on promoting a business online (Based in the UK)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2018 08:26 AM PST

Hi everyone. I'm a photographer from England and my website has an online shop where I sell prints & other items with some of my photos on it. I've tried advertising in local Facebook groups, on Instagram & twitter and feel like I'm not really getting anywhere, but other photographers who do the same thing seem to be finding a lot of success with Facebook in particular. I did ask some of them how they do it but they seem very reluctant to give out any advice, so I am asking here. I'm a student at the same time so am trying to do as much free advertising as I can at the moment. Does anyone (UK more specifically if possible) have any advice on how to get your name out there & promote/advertise yourself? I really feel lost with it all, but want to improve my business so I'm able to do more in the future. Thanks in advance, Laura
